This was the moment in the trailer where all my expectations and good-will died.
It's really a shame, because he actually seems like he's got a personality and will join the adventure for a while. Is it so hard to just give him a proper name and a hat or something?

But we've had ones with actual names like Toadsworth, Toadette, Zess T. and Boshi. The Yoshi in TTYD coulfd have ANY name. Why is it such an agenda these days to remove any uniqueness in the tagalongs?

Dude, I was joking.

Looks to me like the series took a nosedive after Super and Nintendo is now thinking "Ok, we'll fix it incrementally".
"Oh, you didn't like the battle system, practically nonexistent story, lack of personality and charm of the secondary characters and removing the larger world in favor of standard Mario Level style Missions? Here's an improved streamlined version of the same battle system, A SOMEWHAT Meatier story, somewhat punchier writing on the still bland basic faceless army of Toads and other Mario characters, and a shitty basic Mario Level map that feels like it logically connects better."
then:
"Oh, NOW the Battle system is tweaked again but still not fixed, Looks like there might be more story! Bowser isn't the Antagonist at least! Secondary characters appear to actually have personalities now and SOME of the Toads are wearing CLOTHES! but it IS still just basic toads and the like, and there MIGHT be an interconnected world instead of levels. Maybe."
Like, Color Splash and this both look Gorgeous and I love the aesthetic and design sensibilities of integrating the "Papercraft" theme more, and hell I'll even roll the dice on this new Battle system but would it freaking KILL them to make more interesting secondary characters again?!
That Bob-omb looks like he has a personality! That's good! Why can't he be a LITTLE more Unique?! Like, I know Miyamoto was like "ONLY BASIC MARIO CHARACTERS!!" but why does that preclude like, giving them hats, or glasses, or facial hair or something? Like, the Toads seem to occasionally get clothes. Why can't that Bob-omb be named "Bobby 'Splode" and have a neat Jacket and sun glasses or something?
Uuuugh.
I hate it because I thought Color Splash was… OKAY... like not up to snuff with 1-3 but a step in the right direction, and this actually looks better... but it feels like just another small step...

Does the new paper mario have allies you can fight with, if not I don't care one bit
The Thousand year door will always be the best Paper Mario RPG game

No indication of it, at least not yet. It seems that you do have allies that travel and potentially fight with you on a temporary basis that gets swapped out/revolved per chapter though? Really wish we'd get partners and the original battle mechanics back. This bob-omb's name literally being Bob-omb is a bummer too along with the design.

Interesting game selections

It looks Sticker Star 3.
Boooo!

Waiting for Arlo's meltdown.
A total meltdown….. of cautious optimism. -

Super downer, I love all the characters from the first two games, with Vivian, lady Bow and Admiral Bobbery being my absolute favorites
I always hope the partners will show up in a Mario Kart or Mario Party game….. but it never happens
EDIT: I honestly wouldn't mind some characters from the mario & luigi games either, like Fawful, Popple, Midbus and Broque Monsieur etc
-
We were lucky to even get the Star Spirits in Mario Party 5 I guess… I feel you though, with later MP and MK games in particular it can really feel like Nintendo's starved for new characters to add, so I've wondered why they haven't done that myself. It'd be such an easy way to add new characters that'd be embraced much more than say Rose Gold Baby Peach or whatever.
-
There is no need to question Dr baby gold metal wa peach. But audiences aren’t ready for a koopa with a bandana.
-
From the looks of it (my personal interpretation) It seems that the chapters have "Guest" Companions (See Wet Floor Bowser, Baby bowser, the Bo-bomb, Captain Toad?) rather than true Companions.
Which is a shame. Again. For the Third time.….Not hopefull but Hopefully wrong about The Origami King.

Anyone else here stuck in this Switch scalper mess? I got burnt getting a Wii U at launch with how that whole story turned out and it just so happened that the time I felt I wanted to get a Switch was right when this extreme shortage happened. I'm pouring over some YouTube videos, Discord and the like but it's wild how sought after it is right now.

Fans have reported that industry insiders have teased an announcement from Atlus revealing Persona 6, the next numerical game in the Persona franchise. Fans have been eagerly awaiting the next installment in the popular series, and it seems they may catch a glimpse of what the game entails at the New Game Plus Expo on June 23.
Apparently a Persona 6 rumor floating around. I never even heard of this expo until now so idk if this has any credence.
-
Any news about the shortages about the Switch? I want to get one, but seems recently it's hard to get the system, so I was just curious if anything changed.

I remember Persona 5 being teased way back in 2013, I believe. It seems very off to have already another Persona just after Royal got released.

Nothing seems to have changed yet from when i posted about it a couple posts before yours. but i did manage to order one for myself that same day at retail from amazon and have had it for over a week now. I joined a couple Switch search discords that day, including the scalper Bird Bot one, because these people post listings as soon as they're up, and I followed Wario64 on Twitter with push notifs on.
but in the end what got me the Switch a couple hours later after starting the search was Zoolert, which, after setting the alarm, alerted me of one available on Amazon that I got to snatch up in just a couple seconds with the Buy Now button. But you gotta be quick, it was only up for 30 seconds. this was also right before the discords I was on and wario64 posted the same link. Nintendo's continuously making more and more Switches and many of these retailers are restocking multiple times a day though, so that helps your odds too.

I'm very curious about p5 but it seems like there's little to no chance of it hitting the Switch so I dunno if i'll get to try it

Along with Metroid it's like Nintendo just doesn't understand their own baby. Or at least hasn't for a long while.
It feels like with Metroid at least they admit this (giving development of the fourth Prime back to Retro seems like a surrender to this fact). But man, they are pigheaded as shit about the Mario RPG appeal that everyone loves. It's a shame because they completely turned around the bland ship that was Mario platforming, and insanely miraculously turned the Zelda ship around from a pile of abject shit to quite possibly the greatest game in the entire series. Largely in those cases it feels like from listening to the fanbase, looking back at what worked in the classic installments of the series, maybe even letting younger staff who grew up as fans take some control….
But why not with Mario RPG???
-
They need another star fox Wii U to reaaaaaly sink in the lesson. It helps that they are more instrospective than the average developer company, and that they somehow survived shooting themselves in the foot so many times that is not panic inducing anymore.

Yeah, hopefully. There are a few games I really want to play on it like Smash. Thanks for your response by the way.

Looks like style over substance, especially in combat, and nothing resembling an RPG. In fact it seems like an identity crisis overall with absolutely nothing holding it together other than the aesthetic. They are also trying so hard to make people think there are partners but it says "some" aid you in battle and the fact that they refuse to show more than 1 second of proof means it's probably in a reduced and uninteresting capacity.
The battle system does look CONCEPTUALLY interesting, and done right it could actually get challenging and complex but we know that won't happen. Also it's not what I want from this type of game. A puzzle-solving battle setup under time pressure is just going to get exhausting over time and defies the entire spirit of turn-based combat.

These marketing beats from Nintendo are awful. This trailer looks like it would have belonged in a direct and instead they just drop it out of nowhere, with no fanfare, pretty much right after an hour and a half console reveal from Sony. For all we know, this game is all Nintendo has for the second half of the year, and they seem to be content with that?
And it looks terrible. Any goodwill from the first one is completely gone in this one: the possibility of partners is now proven to just be a shallow shell likely to appease fans, the combat looks to be as cumbersome as the previous game without any insight on why it is even necessary. And what bothers me the most is that instead of taking the opportunity to design unique origami bosses to go along with the main baddy, they literally just grab real-world, paper-related objects and paste them in the game. No trying to make them look like creatures, not even googly eyes. Just random objects, because "haha, get it? it's paper and the things are real-world things we use with paper! hilarious!!!1!1!".
I remember people complaining about the koopalings in the past game because they were not original characters; little did we know they could actually get even less original going forward.

That one two punch of the bizarre unappealing looking combat and the boss reveals was just…. my interest pretty much leapt all the way down to 0%.
I'm completely serious when I say Mario Odyssesy was a better Mario RPG than any Paper Mario game since 2007.
-
It amazes me that the mainline breadwinning Mario game meant to appeal to mainstream audiences to sell the Switch took more creative risks with its designs than the niche franchise spinoff.
-
Damn shame neither can seem to do anything with the bread and butter plot though.
-
Man will we ever get a proper Paper Mario game again?
The first two were amazing and I even liked the third one but since then it's been downhill from there
-
We will because each of these now trilogy of nu-Paper Mario games have been marginally better than the last. So just give it another 20 years and we'll get a TTYD-style followup.
I suppose in the meantime, there's
? Haven't tried it yet but very open to now. Also gonna go back and actually play Super Mario RPG. Very weird it's not on NSO already though. -
It doesn't even need to be Paper Mario, just a genuine great Mario RPG of some kind would be nice.
-
That's how I feel at this point (and why I'm gonna jump back to Super Mario RPG for the first time now). I've seen people asking for one building on top of the Mario + Rabbids engine, which I feel could have potential. I also feel, despite only playing the Paper Mario RPGs prior, that I'd almost prefer a new series devoid of what's gone from a visual aesthetic with paper, to the franchise's entire identity.
-
But imagine how fun it will be to battle a stapler with no googly eyes.
-
Probably for the best .
-
So this is what we get instead of e3 this year? Silence and a box of crayons? Reminds me of my birthday once Chavez clamped down on international trade.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Well, Nintendo has changed to a “announce 2 days before” kinda format but still this is annoyingly scarce.
-
They are supossed to reveal the Arms fighter for Smash this month, but still…
-
I wouldn't be surprised if we hear about some other stuff this month, and if not then in July (which doesn't sound great, buuut keeping expectations low). Thinking we could hear about the Mario remasters if true anytime in the next month and hopefully other things as well.

Tanabe talks about the new Paper Mario here.
“When continuing a game series, it’s much easier to carry over the basics from an existing game system rather than building new systems for each new installment,” says Kensuke Tanabe, producer at Nintendo. “But that’s not how you create new experiences or unexpected surprises. As a game designer, I want to deliver new experiences and surprises to our fans, so I always challenge myself to create something new. To be sure, I will sometimes use the same system in a subsequent game to further develop that system until I feel it has reached its full potential. But my goal is to continue to tackle new challenges as much as possible.”
“We never considered whether or not we should implement a party-based system like some other games,” Tanabe says. “As we worked on Paper Mario: The Origami King, we decided we could create more memorable moments if Olivia and the other characters team up with Mario along the way. In other words, we first determine what elements are needed in a game and then figure out how to implement and program them. Bobby, the Bob-omb, was the first character we decided to include, and from there we chose the characters that would be the best fit for the events in each stage of the game. Bowser Jr. was an exception. The director, Mr. Masahiko Nagaya, personally had strong feelings about including a storyline where a son sets out to save his father, so in this case, we decided to include the character before deciding exactly what we would have him do.”
-
Yeah they can take those liberties once they learn what makes a game good.
-
Not gonna lie. If they'd used Bowser Jr as the protagonist and said it was a Paper Mario Spinoff there'd be a lot less flak. Except from those who still want a true Paper Mario I guess.
It wouldn't be a 'true' Paper Mario as would be classed as a Spinoff. Would still give all the new experiences and the boy saving his dad. Would also give some depth to Bowser Jr other than him being 'a bratty kid'
But man I'd buy a Paper Bowser Jr game
-

Well provided anyone likes Jr. whose a tad bit overexposed.

Not sure where to put this, as there's no general Pokémon thread, but for specific games. I thought it be interesting to share this, nice history behind the original games:

The thread for whatever the current generation is generally serves as an all purpose catch-all, its not really for just the specific games.
Poke threads tend to get huge and warrant a new thread whenever a mainline game is announced.

On Saturday, I was at Walmart with some friends, so I decided to see if they had a Switch, but they were all sold out, same with the PS4s. It's gonna be a while till I get one; I really wanna play Smash Ultimate. Hopefully, one day, I managed to find one. >_<
-
Odds are high that you won't just find one stocked as you're casually walking into a shop anytime soon. These are still commodities being sold both used and new by scalpers for exorbitant markups.
You could get one surprisingly quickly online if you give it a shot and turn your alerts/notifications on though. I got one within a couple hours of my first day "searching" for one online through Zoolert last month, and that was literally just me switching over to the Zoolert tab as soon as I heard the alarm and hitting the Buy Now button on Amazon. That's mainly because these shops are constantly getting new stock from Nintendo, like, multiple times a day listings go up even on the same site. Same with getting Ring Fit, though that time Wario64 beat Zoolert to the punch with his notification.
-
I went to Walmart again, and still no Switch. (Or a PS4 for that matter.) I want to buy it at the retail price… bleh. Anyone know what other places I can get the console at a reasonable price? Thank you so much in advance!

I mean I can't find it at Walmart. The only other places I know is to get them online like for example Amazon, and they have the price around $500. That's what I meant. Sorry for the confusion. I probably try to see if other places in my city have them or just play the waiting game.
