I've held on to almost every game system I've ever owned (at least my Nintendo systems) and I still have a bunch of the original cartridges. I used to own a Genesis and Game Gear, but I lost ownership of them at some point.
Anyway, some of my favorites are:
-Super Mario Bros 3
-Super Mario World
-DKC Trilogy
-Super Metroid
-Kirby Superstar
-Super Mario RPG
-Mega Man X Trilogy
-Super Mario 64
-Banjo Kazooie
-Ocarina of Time
-Star Fox 64
-Kirby 64
-Paper Mario
-Super Smash Bros
-Pokémon Red/Blue
-Pokémon Gold/Silver
-Kirby's Dream Land 2
-Wario Land
I held onto most of my classic titles I had growing up from Snes onwards but never really started buying games till the N64 era so I am a little bit more attached to that console than others. (not to mention most of the big names like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy and Mario RPG didnt appear on the PAL Snes)
I do buy a ton of retro games, more so than I've bought new releases in the past few years. Although I did do something stupid a few years ago and due to lack of space threw away the boxes for stuff like Paper Mairo: TTYD and Pokemon XD (kept the discs) and those just so happen to be super expensive now. Oh well. I did get Suikoden 2 for £25 so I guess it balances itself out.
I love retro games these are some pics of my collection from a while back (plus a couple of things not really retro related)
!
Since these pics were taken I added a original Game Boy to it.

I wouldn't feel too bad about the Game Gear, they have extremely high failure rates. You could always get a Majesco one (those don't have the same capacitor issues).
I have a small retro collection of assorted games that I'm slowly building up… there's no real structure or anything I'm going for other than "Fun games I remember enjoying" that I wanted to own physically... This is all true... except my Zelda collection which is still growing massively lol.
Staring with the Non-Zelda stuff:
SNES:
Donkey Kong Country 2
Super Star Wars
Super Empire Strikes Back
Super Return of the Jedi
Yoshi's Island (SFC*)
Mario World (SFC)
Super Metroid (SFC)
Mother 2** (SFC)
*I realized at some point that Japanese Super Famicom carts were WAY less expensive than US SNES carts in most circumstances, and my system is actually a Super Famicom modded to play US games, so a good chunk of my actual carts are SFC carts because of how much cheaper they are (Super Metroid cost me $10 as opposed to like >$50 for an SNES cart)
**I wanted Earthbound but that thing is ridiculously expensive. Like Stupid expensive. So I resigned myself to getting a Reproduction cart, but while I was looking for one I found someone who was selling an actual official Japanese Mother 2 cart flashed to have the Earthbound US Rom on it. I liked this option most because the cart is still "Official" AND I have Earthbound. Plus, they included the original ROM with it, so I basically have both versions in one package.
N64:
Super Smash Bros.
Banjo Kazooie
Banjo Tooie
Donkey Kong 64
Jet Force Gemini
Perfect Dark
Bomberman 64
Bomberman Hero
Star Wars: Rogue Squadrion
Sega Genesis:
Sonic 3
Sonic & Knuckles
GBA:
Mother 3 (Repro)
Playstation:
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Heritage for the Future.
And then, there's my Zelda collection. This is the one that is an actual real concentrated effort to collect it all. I have:

I also have two modded consoles. One is a Super Famicom (SNES) and the other is an N64, both Modded to look more Zelda.
All I have left that are "Necessary" for the Zelda collection are the Famicom Disk System versions of Zelda I and II, The "Standard Edition" carts of Ocarina of Majora, the Gamecube "Collector's Edition" Disc that includes Zelda I, II, Ocarina, and Majora, and the Wii U version of BotW.
Then I'll move on and get the 3 Tingle games and then MAYBE Repro carts of the BS Zelda games. [/hide]
Also, how "Retro" is "Retro" here? I have several GC, DS, and Wii games too that got left out here.

Probably anything not from the current console generation.
Different people get nostalgic for different things, but I think we can all agree that Breath of the Wild isn't retro. :P
I have on original Xbox and just picked up an N64 the other day. It's a pain in the ass to connect them to displays that only support HDMI though. Also occasionally emulate DOS games.

I included BotW for completeness' sake lol. Ok, might update my post to include GC and Wii games in a min then.

You should get an old CRT TV; people throw them out all the time around here.
BUMP
I found a thrown out Sega Saturn that had nothing with it now I'm comtemplating investing in it, eventhough logically it would make better since to pick up one from a place like Gamestop since it would have all the necessary cables which the one I found doesn't. Along with the fact that the Saturn's library isn't very deep.
If we're talking really retro games then Sonic 2, Shining Force/Shining Force 2, and Earthworm Jim were all part of my early childhood. Beyond that, stuff like Pokemon Crystal and Emerald, Golden Sun, Fire Emblem, the GBA Kirby games are my favorites.
Since Wii Shop is shutting down in a few months, I actually bought a whole bunch of retro games from it, including:
-Alex Kidd in Miracle World
-Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars
-Earthworm Jim 2
-Pulseman
-Phantasy Star I-IV
I'm planning to buy more, mainly DoReMi Fantasy, Rondo of Blood, and the Wonder Boy games.

Wonder Boy in Monster World 4 is exclusive to the eshop and PSN. It never got a western cart release.

Okay got an A/V cable and adapter for my appropriated Saturn now just need some controllers and some game's to finish the necessary tests.

The optical drive is likely to be dead (most Saturns suffer from bad motors/lasers). If you're lucky and the rest of the system works fine, you can replace the drive with a Rhea or Phoebe (when it's available) depending on what type of Saturn system you have.
Yeah I won't be able to test that for a few weeks at most. But I like to think my chances are good.
I only have 2 retro games left
Donkey Kong for atari/colecovision/sears game system and ET
Didn't know until recently that et has a bit of a reputation among gaming history
I like how a great deal of my retro faves are available in some format on the more modern consoles, but sadly too many are not. Luckily I have 3 retro game stores within a semi-reasonable biking distance from where I live so I have access to a lot of them that I've been looking for the last few years. Here's a short list of ones I've been happy to add to my collection recently:
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Little Nemo: The Dream Master
Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage (Would be the best beat 'em up ever except it's not 2 player)
Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse/Magical Quest II The Great Circus Mystery
Shining in the Darkness (Genesis RPG with similar setting to Etrian Odyssey)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time/TMNT The Arcade Game
The Simpsons Bart Vs. The World/Bart Vs. the Space Mutants/Bartman Meets Radioactive Man (Still need Virtual Bart)
Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose (Still need original NES Tiny Toons game)
M.C. Kids (Has no business being as good as it is for being something created to promote a fast food franchise and consumption)
Bubsy/Bubsy II (The originals are the best, those 3D and newer 2D games don't hold a candle)
Donald Duck in Quackshot/Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow
I have more but I can't think of them at the moment. I am also still looking for Snow Bros. on NES. That one is like a more interesting take on the original Mario Bros. (the sewer cleaning one, not the side-scrolling platformers).

I'm hoping to get the Mega Drive version someday.
The Gameboy version is by far the cheapest, so you could look into getting that.

Nah, the Retron I have is only for NES, SNES and Genesis. It doesn't work with Game Genie so I doubt it would work with Super Gameboy, plus even then I doubt it would be able to utilize 2-player since those required the Link Cable for multiplayer and how would that even work? Not to mention I doubt all those games were able to utilize the link cable anyway.

It's single player. The story was changed and your bother gets kidnapped instead of the snow princesses.
They threw in some exclusive levels and a new final boss, though.

The Gameboy one? Yeah, I figured it was only 1P. But hey, if it ever becomes available on the Virtual Console (I doubt any Sega Mega Drive games are, though), I'll snag it. Otherwise, on with the search. I just wish the best place in town for Retro Games wasn't technically in the next town over from me and would take 1.5 to 2 hours to bike there, especially in summer weather.
