Crocodile knows the score and never needed protection or dealings with any Yonko. A pure self made man who isn't intimidated by any Admiral or Yonko. If given the chance he would murder every celestial dragon without hesitation. The same could not be said for Jinbei who would most likely bow down to them and beg for their scraps.

Crocodile did need protection he became a warlord so did Jinbe but Jinbe became one to use the title for race relations with fishman and humans because the dead queen wanted to join the world govt lol.
he allied with big mom to protect fishman island and arlong was bad but not as bad as hody but hody only made his move to take over fishman island when the straw hats got there since he wanted to be the new king so that the could kill all the other kings also nami would have been less likely to join if arlong did not exist since she would not have been out at sea during that time to see the straw hats so they would have no reason to go to nami's island.
Crocodile would not have no chance of taking over alabasta without his warlord title since the marines would come when he tried a vice admiral would have been enough to take crocodile out back then if luffy coming out of east blue could do it.
You seem to be forgetting that Arlong was bribing the marines and killing any that did not take the bribes to not report the news as well.
