You misunderstand, by “official seperation” I AM talking abt CR. They base when seasons start and end based on whats convenient for the amount of episodes per voyage, they recently updated season 14 to end at 1088.

Well, it's April 9th. Anyone got the DVDs yet?
-
I'm more or so curious to see how they are going to handle the closing credits. Since Season 10 they had that black screen at the end of each episode to credit only the main cast of characters of the arc.
-
@Blake-Bakes-Cakes but doesnt the latest release only include up to 1073? If that was truly the case, Id expect this set to run through 1074 or even 1075 and the final batch going up to 1088. 12 in this batch and 15 in the next feels nonsensical and more in line with a Crunchyroll that is aiming to end the season on 1085.
it honestly feels like despite everything now being under one umbrella, there are two Crunchyrolls making different decisions about the sub and the dub and maybe they're not aligned on this.
It just doesn't make sense to me that they end the season with 13 > 12 > 15 episodes when 13 > 13 > 14 or 13 > 14 > 13 was right there.
-
I'm aware, that's why we were confused in the first place. Maybe they can just barely squeeze the recap on a dvd somehow, its just they've never had more than seven in the past. With the lack of special features though it may be possible. Who knows? Either way we finish the main story of wano next set. The only bad scenario is if they tried to split the rest into 8 and 9 episode voyages lol
-
That would be horrible lol.
I'm ultimately just saying it's weird that we're speculating all these things that they COULD do to correct a "mistake" when it's far more likely they're just ending the "season" (which is still a fairly arbitrary delineation) at 1085 and adding 1086-1088 to the next season. It feels like the only other person who sort of suggested that is @Zephray and everyone else is basically saying it's a mistake, or pushing back against the notion when it's what makes the most logical sense, at least to me.
And I get that it doesn't help, as @Sano pointed out, that there's a random Momonosuke recap at the end of the trio that ties the episodes more to Wano than to Egghead.
-
Saying that they miscalculated the episodes they'd need for voyages and that they fixed it IS talking about a perceived mistake and how you think they'll fix it. It's just as much speculating as what anyone else is saying. Besides, I implied in what I said that it could have more or less episodes. I'll say I personally doubt it, as they pretty much JUST made that distinction, but it's possible. They've done dumber things. We'll find out in due time.
-
Huh, they gave Big Mom a different VA as a young adult. Could be the same as when she was even younger? Idk
-
There are a handful of G5 clips on YouTube now. Sounds like Colleen nailed it. G5 brings so much joy; really can't imagine a better peak for Luffy's character arc.
-
Personally, I don't much care about the season likely ending at 1085 (12 episodes on final set). I could see 1086-1088 as belonging to either arc, narratively speaking. 1089 seems very obviously to belong to Egghead, considering the events in the back-half of the episode very clearly being narratively relevant to Egghead.
But yes, would be kind of odd for the bluray/digital release "seasons" to not match the Crunchyroll seasons. So there is some sort of possibility they'll just make the last set a lot longer. No doubt they'll charge extra for it, too. -_-

Unfortunately, they only credit the japanese cast in the ending and still only have the main dub cast credited.
-
Finished the eps, yeah Colleen does great. It’s a really nice change of pace to have a transformation that actually calls for a change up in performance. After 1000 episodes there are only so many ways to scream in anger, but theres a million different ways to do funny and she takes full advantage. Also, I noticed three separate instances of the woody woodpecker laugh which is, genuinely such a small but genius touch.
-
What do you do when you're surrounded by people who keep going "Death to all dubs!" and say any dub of Luffy's voice is a violation of anime?
-
Tell em it’s ok to not like the same thing. You can ask what specifically they don’t like, and perhaps it will just come down to it not being what they are used to hearing. Some of those folks’ takes really just boil down to that, they want it to be the thing they’re used to.
-
I've also noticed with the sub-only watchers that watching with sub gives them a degree of separation and allows them to think the show is more mature than it is; the intentionally over-the-top performances are easier to cringe at when it's in your native language. When they hear anime dubbed, sometimes it forces them to realize how goofy or silly the show is, which makes them feel childish. Said another way, the sub-only people are being blatantly pretentious.
(Note: it's fine to see shows like One Piece as multi-faceted, both silly and childish at times as well as serious and heartbreaking at others. It's also okay to love something silly and fun that brings you some joy, even if that thing seems immature to others.)
-
Yeah sub-only watchers always say the dub is cringe, but they have no idea if the original voices are cringe too to those who actually understand Japanese.
-
I feel like the dub had even more of a looney toons vibe than the Japanese, both Luffy and Kaido’s voice actors were very impressive and into the roles. Still so hard to believe the dub managed to get this far.
-
Watched the episodes. Everything's doing fine so far, the main issues are the usual sore spots of Sobolov's Kaido being unspectacular and Justin Cook getting old. I'm also noticing a longer-term issue that Saturn's current delivery would probably be obnoxious if it remained as-is for Egghead.
-

Apparently she is voiced by Morgan Lauré Garrett, who also did the voice of Sanji's imaginary version of Big Mom from Episode 571
-
Man I couldn’t disagree more on Justin and David. While I’ll admit his screams can be a bit weak, otherwise Davids a standout as Kaido and the definitive sound for him in my mind.
Always love Justin Cook, not sure if you mean that literally or not but if you do I don’t get it. He’s only 42, I don’t notice any real difference in his performances. He clearly puts a lot of effort in, he did fantastic in the big mom climax imo
-
Seconding Blake here, though I haven’t seen the new batch of episodes. Sobolov is one of the best actors ever to grace the show; no idea how anyone could think he’s weak, but you’re entitled to your opinion.
The more I watch, the more perfect Yamato sounds to me. That actress really settled into the role, or I (also?) got used to it.
I’ll miss them both when they’re gone. Hopefully someone fantastic will play Saturn & Vegapunk. They have big shoes to fill.
-
@Zephray did Saturn’s actor get replaced?
-
I don't think so no, just obviously doesn't have a ton of scenes. I think trueblade probably thinks it would be annoying as its rather gravelly, but personally I think it fits him well enough.
-
Update on my progress of catching up on the dub. I just finished episode 925 (Soba Mask vs. Page One). First thing, I really like the dub voices for Queen and King. It fits both characters perfectly. The dub did a great job on both the Big Mom Pirates arriving in Wano scenes and the entire Soba Mask vs. Page One fight.

I think Yamato's VA is non-binary. Not sure though.
-
They are but go by she/they. I do think people are trying to retire the term voice actress in general tho
-
If someone identifies as female, I see no issue with calling them an actress. The word doesn't have any derogatory connotations, though sometimes "actor" is gender ambiguous. If a word isn't blatantly offensive, I don't think we should be dictating the minutia of how people speak.

I wouldn't be surprised if they replace him, but we don't know one way or another. Does anyone have a clip of him speaking in the dub. It's been years since I've heard him.
-
I wasn't trying to dictate how you speak I was just informing, it's not offensive or anything it's just since the topic came up. For me it just makes things easier.
-
Dub gear fifth is so good even TWITTER is admitting Colleen Luffy is peak never thought I'd see the day.
-
@Zephray I don’t have a clip, but I’m pretty sure all 5 of them get a line in film Red, which I just watched for the first time a few weeks ago. I remember thinking “ah, ok, that’s what they sound like, interesting!”
-
@Zek I watched the G5 intro episode and heard it there. Yeah, Saturn's actor is not good. And if he had a line this close to Egghead, it means they aren't replacing him. Hopefully the directors can get a workable performance out of him, but he certainly won't be filling Kaido/Sobolov's big shoes.
-
@Zephray Saturn wasn’t too bad to me, that’s kind of how I imagined him sounding.
Easily the best episode besides the Gear 5 stuff was the one where Kaido got drunk and had all those mood swings, David Sobolov was hilarious and perfect for that role, I’m gonna miss his Kaido
-
Here’s a great clip for anyone who isn’t watching the set illegally or paying outrageous prices.
-
@Blake-Bakes-Cakes , I’m not sure I fully agree on Kaido’s screams being bad. They aren’t typical anime full-throated screams, I’ll give you that. But I kind of like the weird breathy quality of his screams. They kind of make sense for a really big guy. I view them as an inspired alternative, not a weakness.
On alternative, check out Bullet in Stampede. I remember that guy being a similar deep voiced, big deep scream that might be more what you personally were looking for.
-
It’s not awful, it just sounds like hes noticeably struggling a lot of the time, and can sometimes be a bit unintentionally goofy. Makes it really work for the gear 5th beatdowns tho.

Heheh, wouldn't it make sense for a scream to be a struggle?
Kidding, I know what you mean. But I think it's intentional; he's both a big guy and a guy who speaks with a lot of gravel and mucus in his throat. It kind of makes sense for his scream to be breathy and a little less conventional. But I'd have to listen to a specific scream to zero in more on what exactly you mean here.
-
Probably shouldn’t bother me, but mildly annoying to me everyone keeps raving abt a scene where kaido quickly says “mommy” and going “WOAH THEY SAID NANI IN AN ENGLISH DUB???”. Like I heard that at first too but use your brains.
-
Yeah I noticed that too, people can be very foolish and only hear what they want to hear. Essentially, in the moment, they are equally funny, but in 17 years and 1070 episodes, I don’t think they’ve ever spoken Japanese like that outside of titles, terms, and Boss Luffy specials.
It’s funny, it’s a classic cartoon exclamation, very Daffy Duck. It proves that every choice the dub has made has been the right one to lead us to this exact moment (ok maybe that’s a bit too far but I cackled at that clip.)
-
@Blake-Bakes-Cakes
Assassination Classroom's dub actually let Sonny Strait's Koro-sensei say "Nani?", though. There's precedent. -
@Trueblade74 Korosensei does also routinely dress up as other popular Manga/Anime characters, so that fits waaaaay more.
-
Yeah, not gonna lie, I heard "nani" at first too but I think it's because I have anime brainrot lol. It's definitely "mommy" though as it makes way more sense in this context.

I wonder if they thought "Oh these guys will never appear!" or if they already knew it
-
For people in the UK that's collecting the anime. Starting with Collection 34, One Piece will be available on both blu ray and DVD.
-
@Sano
Pros of UK releases:- Cheaper than importing, particularly once discounts happen
- Takes up less space
- Easier (and not illegal!) to sell if a better version comes along
- Can theoretically be lent to my friends (if they had Blu-ray players and watched the first 800 episodes through other means)
Cons:
- Doesn't come with DVDs that I'll literally never watch
- The spines in my collection will change from normal DVD cases, to thick DVD cases, to normal Blu-ray cases. But it's already kinda jank in that sense 'cause it's a mixture of Voyages and Collections, and the movies are different cases because for whatever reason America uses thin cases as standard for Blu-rays.

One Piece - Season 13 Voyage 8
Once again... No special features.... Like what is the point of releasing these if there are no extras... We used to get like 4 Commentaries and at least 1 Special feature per Voyage, I hate this change
-
Oh, Vinland Saga S2 announced, too. Damn, Hate that they're splitting that up into two purchases, and the text work on the box art is horrendous. Man, CR needs better designers, particularly for the spines. At least OP is standardized. Still one more set before we start getting Wano.
-
Nice to see Tomo Chan is Girl is getting a home video release. Also looks like they're beginning to reprint some of the older Funimation releases to the Crunchyroll brand with Soul Eater.
-
@Elektrik-Dynomite we sadly will never get bonus features we lost dubbed songs and now we are losing commentaries and bonus extras. Thanks, Vic….
-
Vic sucks for many reasons but I have no idea how these things could possibly be correlated.
