Alllll caught up. This manga is excellent. Though the manga has its villains and its tragedies, it feels so intensely…pleasant. Like, it doesn't have a mean sprited bone in its body. But then again, I'm a sucker for "lets try and have empathy for non-humans and not just villify them per default" stories. Helck might not be the most original manga ever, but its protagonists are likeable and well written, and unoriginality doesn't matter if you can execute it well and with heart and conviction. Its the same vibes I got from "How to Train your Dragon", which is a big compliment.
Also, despite featuring plenty of attractive female characters, I cannot recall a single instance of the "camera" ogling them or using them for cheap fanservice. Hyura is a badass warrior and is presented as just that, no "...and we also see Elsa bathing a lot, or with torn-up clothes!" caveats. Thats damn refreshing.
And the art and fighting choreography-arguably the biggest "weaknesses" of the series early on- got a whole lot better too, the latest chapters are a testament to that.
I'm not entirely sure what Helck wanted to accomplish by becoming Demon King though? Judging by the flashback, I thought he wanted to return and finish the job - or did he lose his conviction?
