I'll get a second oppinion then.

@F13rC:
This can be a problem since you'll have made all the weapons/armors (which there aren't as many of) really fast and then it's how much you enjoy the game vs. the feeling of having somewhere to progress.
I mean, it took me 100+ hours to get the basic sets of everything I wanted, and I'm 200+ in and still farming some stuff. It's not like you can breeze through World. Also worth noting that in 100+ hours of playing World you're getting a whole lot more done than in an equivalent 100+ hours of MHGU, since there's so much additional farming and prep and pure grind and loading.

No doubt, there is still a lot of farming to do if you decide to do all the weapon branches in World.
Though I can't deny the frontloaded materials farming of GU, you'll still have much more to do after that's done compared to World. For my PC run, I'm beating each monster in each difficulty (Low, High, Tempered and AT when it's out) with every weapon type as I'm progressing, but running expeditions to do this I'm getting excess of every material except a few that don't drop as often (Anjanath fangs, poison/aqua/thunder sacs).
However, I know that once you gain access to the palico plunderblade and expeditions you can be flooding in everything except rubies/gems, which is where you'll be farming most to finish weapon trees and augment gear. Moreover, due to the skill system with no drawbacks, and general powercreep of High Rank armor (and Gamma Sets), a lot of armor is invalidated (all of Low Rank gear, almost all Alpha gear and most of the lower tier Beta gear) and it's even unnecessary to build each weapon due to how irrelevant elemental damage is for the slower weapons.
You'll end up needing more sets from the GU system to get skill diversity since you can't just slap random decorations on any slot for instant benefits.GU also has inherent transmog instead of lazy layered armors, so you can look snazzy with any gear without having crappy skills.
-
If it's either/or I would recommend World for sure. I haven't played the newer Generations but the original one was pretty fun and had a bunch of monsters. I couldn't imagine going back to the earlier games though. There's been so many quality of life improvements.
Someone beat Extreme Behemoth within the 30 minute time limit with a Hunting Horn. Anything is possible:
-
Ok, it didn't melt my laptop (yet) having fun, but I'm not in the flow of combat, or haven't found a weapon that I like.
The bagpipe was hilarious, but I didn't feel the impact of the hits.
The twin daggers were speedy enough, but it took foreeever to kill things.
The vaulting lance is very hard to hit with..
Same with the buster sword, but at least it hits like a truck (but I should do the math and see if that 50 is actually more than the little bunch of 5-7)
I put on the axe-sword and upgraded it, but then went to do the "kill bugs" investigation, so still haven't tested it. -

I put on the axe-sword and upgraded it, but then went to do the "kill bugs" investigation, so still haven't tested it.Hunting Horn is a pretty simple weapon once you have your buffs up, but the different selection of buffs tied to elements/raw damage might make or break the weapon for you.
What I really adore about Dual Blades is just going to town with elemental swings and dancing past incoming attacks and going right back in, really makes up for the lack of range. The Lance is all about getting up in a monster's face and poking it, countering it, and power guarding through it's best moves.
It's fairly easy to get an early mount with the jump attack, but probably not the most reliable gap closer in the lance's arsenal (unless you save the mount to climb aboard during a monster's attack).Great Sword just feels bad until you get a window to hit the fully-charged third swing, but prepare for that to be interrupted for some reason or another. May have to through down a trap for those suckers.
Switch Axe is pretty fun, only thing dissatisfying is getting on the monster for a discharge, but it then attacks where you got on and it immediately knocks you off.
-
For starters, the best weapon is either the Sword & Shield, the Longsword, or the Bow.

You can always cancel out the full discharge by releasing your finger. That way you'll do some damage while avoiding getting knocked off.

Strong believer in "play whatever feels fun" when it comes to this game, but recommend taking a look at some Youtube weapon tutorials (Arekkz and Rurikhan both have good ones), just because every weapon has some quirk to it that isn't intuitively obvious to new players. I personally main Charge Blade with occasional Dual, and lord knows I would have had no clue had to run CB without watching a few videos. CB, btw, is a pretty great solo weapon, too.
Also, while I did a lot of stuff solo, don't be afraid to throw out some SOS flares, especially when grinding. Game really shines in multiplayer, and the community by and large is much more positive and helpful than others. In 200+ hours, I've had two toxic experiences, both when I accidentally unslept a critter with a weak attack (Charge Blade=slow animations with fairly complicated setup, so it's pretty easy to fry your brain temporarily). But for the most part, even team wipes have been fun, and there's something great about the exchange of "thumb's-up" stickers at the end of a successful hunt.

I'd add Lance to that list, since it has the simplest chain of attacks, easy access to monster weak spots, a plethora of repositioning options, and its shield is very strong/versatile.
I feel the SnS is very awkward to use since its range is limited, but being able to pull anything out of your slinger/item pouch balances it out. Will have to remember that the next time I get into that situation and have the time to react.
-
I don't want to go full youtube tutorial style yet, let the game try to teach it to me first, but I'll be aware of that fact.
I won't be able to play today, but I'll keep on testing weapons, after the swordaxe I prepped up a bow for use.

Good way to go. Game gives you plenty of info to get you on your way and enjoying yourself. Just think it's a little, uh, slight in some of the advanced mechanics.

Autumn Festival begins September 20th. I expect a big update as it almost coincides with the TGS.
-
So far, they haven't released a new monster during a fest, as both Kulve Taroth and Behemoth released soon after Spring Blossom and Summer Twilight fest respectively.
The last of the content from the Behemoth patch is going to roll out in the Autumn Festival, and we'll most likely see a new patch in October (perhaps immediately after, like Kulve's debut).Hopefully, if their next monster is Oroshi Kirin, they'll implement a branched weapon path like they did with Lunastra so we can get some more weapons with unique skills.
I expect Alatreon will have its own distinct weapons, possibly fulfilling its weapon roster as they did with Deviljho and Lunastra.
Maybe they'll surprise us with a midfest release, just not counting on it.What I'm anticipating more is whether the next monster will bring something "new:"
! Deviljho was the first monster update to a main MH game, introduced a new mechanic to the dismay of Fanged Wyverns, and was the first returning monster that decked out a complete weapon tree (where it didn't have one before).
! Kulve Taroth introduced a relic weapon system, MHW's first multiplayer oriented fight (mostly due to how its rewards system is designed) and brought its own map with new endemic life.
! Lunastra came with a completely revamped moveset (differentiating it from a blue fire copy of Teostra), multiple attacks that synergize with Teostra (including a devastating bonding attack), and branching weaponry that possessed armor set skills.
! Behemoth marked the first collab monster, bringing its own fight mechanics (enmity and Ecliptic Meteor).
Probably the least "new" update overall, though it does break unique grounds. -
They have upped the ante with every new update. It makes me wonder what are they going to give us when that G-Rank expansion eventually drops.
-
I managed to cut a Rathian's tail. It killed me three times and escaped tho..
I'm still in the second area, trying to farm water weapons.
-
The first real wake-up call in the game is Anjanath: it harnesses brute strength and fire elemental capabilities, and it hits so damn hard and relentlessly that I do not recommend tackling this beast with anything short of Tobi-Kadachi or Rathian armor. Despite its big size, the Anjanath is also deceptively fast, capable of crossing a large area in a single bound.
-
Kind of farming it already, but the drop rates of the fire organs (can't remember the name, fire sack? fire gland?) has left me in an akward position.
Now I'm deciding if I want to keep geting fire, or to go for the batgeon, the flashraptor or the fuzzy electric lizzard.
The godddamned apex predator of the coral area, twice I've engaged in a half an hour battle to the death, twice it has escaped.
-
Farming Legiana, Rathalos, Diablos, and ??? is best done when you can get investigations with them.
However, if you want to get ahead of the part of the story where their investigations pop up, get an optional quest that happen to have them in it.
Optional quests are 50 minutes, so you should have time for them and the main target, and the Apex monster shouldn't run away. You should be pretty close to the Tailraider Safari, where you can send Palicos to collect materials from any of the maps.
They are really good for getting elemental sacs from monsters, which I'm currently using to collect materials from low rank Jyuratodus and Tobi Kadachi. -
Diabolos choses to die a warriors death (meaning the 8th time that he digs away from me he didn't even consider escaping, and that I should have changed the hammer once I broke his dumb horns, and it killed me)
Legiana is still a challenge, but I got it in the investigation list already.
The one that caused me tons of trouble, with the glaive and hammer was Odogaron, not ready to farm it yet. But as it was a story quest, I think that I should farm at least Ice and Dragon weapons to cover all my bases.
-
Legina is food, every Low rank except rathalos and diablos (and Odragon, but I think that now I could take it) are food.
Still dipping into high rank without too much progress, I'm terrified of the bombarding dragon, too many explosions.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Is there a way to get the materials back from the alpha or beta armors? Haven't tried to sell them, but I'm kind of angry that I was farming the armor spheres, and I used up some of the high end ones, not counting the raw materials, just for them to get obsolete.
At least I didn't build the bettle armor.
-
TGS begins tomorrow. And it coincides with the start of the Autumn Festival. And just a few hours ago, build figures of Oroshi Kirin and Rajang designed in the World style, were announced. Hmm…
-
Oh, I've been rellying this week too much on optional quests, because I wana get the ones that I'm missing, but I should go back to investigations. My bad.
Well, I needed some LR parts so I guess it wasn't that bad.
-

You settled into main weapons yet? And how you liking the game?
-
I got used to the sword and shield, as I liked the jumping attacks of those, in the end I liked a lot of the weapons, but I felt too powerless with the big damage ones with their swings and misses, and the sword and shield kind of invited me to have an arsenal of a bunch of different ones, with elements and fast hits, rather than just THE weapon.
Also, I can switch from blunt to slashing in the same weapon, and that is cool.
I've liked it, but I'm preparing for trying to beat Nergigante again, who just rolled me over the first try, so advance has been slow.
-
Nerg is 100% my favorite fight. He's so brutal but with openings for some massive retaliatory attacks if you angle right. Probably the easiest of the elders for me now, but still good for a surprise cart every once in a while.
-
Until now my capture of Bazel has been the most glorious fight.
-
Speaking of Bazel, when that eventual G Rank expansion drops, I wonder if that bastard will have learned to drop… nukes.
-
I go to the rot valley to check for blue clues.
Deviljho is there so I say why not? The thing is a pickle of rage all the time, I keep my distance, time to try and close this battle. Bazelgeise. Shows up out of nowhere, explodes all over jho, and then they both go away.
-
The new Downy Crake Dual Blades make me want more weapons with that level of fluffiness.
Wish they released more of these fun designs at a time, could go for some Bristly Crake weaponry. -
Imagine a HH Tsuchinoko.
-
Got some new Gamma sets on the way with the latest announcements!
Surprising that we're getting Arch Tempered Zorah Magdoros and Arch Tempered Lunastra before AT Nergigante.
But at least this gives us a chance of getting a good Crit Element build, an eventual AT Xeno'Jiva and possibly even an AT Kulve Taroth.Makes me wonder how AT ZM will shake things up from the regular quest.
It's likely to have AT Nerg instead of regular Nerg, and we might even be forced to repel it.AT Lunastra sounds like a nightmare given how fast and hard she strikes.
Unlike the latest AT Kush and AT Teo quests that had the other drop in to soften the target up, she'll likely have AT Teo as a support.
If they up that blue fire damage, you pretty much have to equip Heat Guard to nullify it as that will hurt you even under Temporal Mantle…The first Gamma collab set comes with the upcoming dual Tempered Deviljho quest.
Even if you keep them apart for most of the quest, you pretty much summon the second one by capping/killing the first.Given that it's the Ancient Forest, fighting two of them in any place besides the first zone will be horribly crowded.
Wondering if they'll have Bazel show up to smack them up, or just Jagras/Tobi for ammo.Plenty of people on Reddit are quick to complain about no new monsters being announced, but aside from Behemoth, no addition has been announced more than a few days before the patch dropped.
Since none of these quests/sets have been datamined, we know that it's a new patch drop and likely to have a new monster.
So, I'm glad we get more sets to shake up the meta, as I have enjoyed every Gamma set so far except AT Kush, which would be more useful to me on PC where I am building all the weapons.Edit: Though it is a little worrying that the AT Lunastra release is right after the Autumn Festival...
-
PC didn't get the cool events, but I'm on the way to mastering the sword and shield build.
I got both water elemental (Jagra and the water-steel one) the Legiana one, the Tobi Kadachi one, and I'm one Nergigante part away from the final Dragon one. I'm deciding if building the rathalos one is worth it, Kirin and Zombie dragon are intimidating still, or if I should invest into status effects, now that I'm starting with tempered hunts. I don't think that elements overlap, but having to hunt Sleep/Stun/Paralize/Blast parts takes time.
Hunted the base set of elder dragons, with the wind one being THE WORST, can't even cut it's tail before I have to kill him or die. Zombie, Fire, Kirin and Nergigante being manageable, and the end boss and Zorah being somewhat of a pain more than a challenge.
-

I can mostly agree with this, though Tempered Kirin still gives me fits.
Kushala is the least fun hunt in the game, save maybe Zorah, which is really more of an event than a hunt.
Have you started SOSing or joining investigations yet? Pretty much going to need to for Kulve and Behemoth. Behemoth is really impressive though not that fun, but Kulve is a great fight.
-
Haven't helped any sos. Is behemut out on PC?
-
I will always love what they did with the final boss. It's a newborn, and it shows during battle. It isn't intended to be a challenge, but to give us a taste of what is essentially a monster that lacks the experience of a real Elder Dragon.
! I'm pretty sure one day we're going to face off with the fully matured Xeno'Jiiva.
-
It makes me feel particulary bad, there are some sounds that it makes that make me feel like a monster.
-
Haven't helped any sos. Is behemut out on PC?
Don't think so on Behemoth. Think it's caught up to Lunastra and that's it at this point?
-
Turns out I only faced a LR kirin. And all my good armor is weak to thunder. ALL of it.
It was hard T_T
-
Kirin's a son-of-a-gun. Pretty much need a dedicated anti-Kirin set.
Seems like more dedicated players have sets for just about every elder, but I mainly just have a few decoration places dedicated to different anti-elder things, like miasma, fire, etc.
-
You think Kirin is bad? Pray they don't add Rajang to World, otherwise you'll know the true meaning of pain.
-
Does anyone think they'd ever make a spinoff of this franchise where you fight more Gothic like monsters and less dinosaurs? like vampires werewolves etc.?
-
Considering the hit it is right now, the sky is the limit. But this game isn't made to fight such small opponents.
-
The smallest large monster you're ever going to encounter in MH would be Kirin. From there it only goes up.
-
Consider me a hater of tempered Kirin, fuck that horse.
-
Consider me a hater of tempered Kirin, fuck that horse.
I have some bad news for ya.
!

I mean, that's Bloodborne. Mechanics are pretty different, but think they've probably got the market cornered on difficult Gothic Monster Hunts.
Unless Castlevania: Lords of Shadow gets a remaster. Which, I mean, I can dream.
-
Beat the fucking Kirin after like 7 attempts. Didn't realize that I still need to farm the streamstones for unlocking aguments.
Meh, I'll finish the pokedex first, only the alts, the regular elders, and that annoying lava piscine to go.
-

Are you soloing him? I usually use the Anja Arch or one of the fire hammers I have and then I'll rotate the thunderproof and vitality mantle with thunder resistant armor and gems. With a bow, he might be too easy if you know what you're doing, but it's a nice challenge with a hammer.
-
Just collecting the last few mantles, after I got rocksteady, I decided to swap out my Bazelgeise gear for the ear protection, into the offensive bonus for Nergigante, so I have 2 for Rathalos and 3 for Nergigante to get that sweet sweet lifesteal.
Still dancing around with elemental swords, tried to invest into a hammer build, but dunno what to do.
I still have tons of armors to collect, but frankly I doubt I'll ever do it beyond what is useful, as I see the "Bone armor beta" pieces that I have and I think "why would I wear this?" and I share a similar feeling with a ton of the stuff on the forge.
Maybe if there was a transmog system like wow's, as I was kind of enthralled by Bazel's lion-like headpiece, but I dislike nergigante's unapealing horns.
-
Looks like the new patch wasn't a title update, bringing us AT Lunastra and Zorah, along with:
! the data for AT Xeno's armor and the next seasonal event.
! Seems like it's going to be a long time between new monsters, unless they throw something in between the releases of the AT mons and the seasonal event.
