No shockers today in my opinion. I will be surprised if Netherlands and Argentina don'the win tomorrow.
FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil
-
-
It was a disappointing first quarterfinals day for me.
France played worse than what they're capable of and couldn't score a goal to save their lives. I blame the pressure and the players' relatively young age. They're talented but inexperienced. Too inexperienced to win a World Cup sadly. But I expect great things from the team at the Euro in two years' time.
Colombia on the other hand played extremely well and REALLY would've deserved that spot in the semifinals. What makes it even more bitter is the fact they lost to two standard situations; one of which couldn't be defended due to the keeper's height… Had they lost against a technically skilled Brazil, one even slightly resembling the 2002 team, I wouldn't have complained with a single word. But this? It's just sad.
Tomorrow I want to see the Netherlands prove what they're made of and make people forget about the match against Mexico. And Belgium too I want to see triumph, walking off the field as the fourth (or rather third) semifinalist.
-
Good luck ive already put 150 dollars on brazil. I highly doubt germany are going to win. Brazil> germany
Look at the players of brazil and look at how brazil is playing. Thats rubbish with no direction or sense.
Look at germany players 500mio vs 100mio, germany have better and most important players who use their brain

I sincerely hope the reason you root for Germany is because you are from Germany and not "500mio vs 100".
glances at Yankees stadium
Oh right.
-
Brazil played better through most of the game. Colombia became better in the last 20 minutes.
Ref was terrible.
-
Colombia had a good goal discarded and the second Brazil goal was probably not a free kick.
Brazil gonna Brazil.
-
The ref was definitely fucking awful. However, I don't think it was entirely against Colombia. Both teams made as many foul moves as each other, and he should have carded a LOT of people on both teams, and perhaps if he had had the balls to do it early the match wouldn't have been interrupted sooo many times.
But all things considered, the Brazilian victory was well obtained. The first goal was a massive defensive fuck up from Colombia, and the second goal was a fucking beautiful shot from David Luis. If anything, the main conclusion I get from this match is that everyone focusing on Neymar is a fucking crime seeing how so many other Brazilian players do phenomenal stuff. David Luis should be getting more praise: classy, respectful, fantastic shot, and a great defensive role. Fantastic player, and I'm really glad he defined the match in the end while neymar was left in the ground ignored after faking so many times.
Fantastic match, and as sad as I am to lose, I'm glad it wasn't a stupid bullshit loss like when Mexico lost. Otherwise I'd be writhing in rage. Also, the excitement in the very end was palpable pretty much everywhere. This is the match you want to see, the ones that leave you standing up until the very last minute.
Now I'm awaiting Germany's inevitable victory. They feel much more organized and effective than both Brazil and Colombia, so I look forward to them getting to the final.
-
Brazil was the better team today(of the 90 minutes that is)
I agree that Brazil is kind of disappointing but who isn't?
So far all the "big teams"have looked vulnerable at one point or another.Germany against ghana and algeria.holland against mexico.Argentina in all of it's games.
I think brazil will win it's 6th star(and keep the second world cup trophy permanently). They have the individual talents, they can step up the level of their game(they showed a glimpse of it today) and they can find the mental resources and motivation to win at home. -
Neymar out of the WC. 3-6 weeks to recover.

Brazil gonna Brazil.
Yepes'? Offside.

You can cheer for another team and dislike the way he plays (and I do), but we can agree that was an awful injury.
Where's FIFA's commitee right now to punish the player who did that? The judge didn't even give a yellow card!
-
No Neymar and Silva? That sucks. I wanted Germany to beat Brazils best Team. :/

This is actually a fantastic question. Given that Suarez was punished for a bite post-match, Zuniga (I think it was him) should get some sort of consequence.

This just in: Neymar suffered a bone fracture on his spine.
http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/news/y=2014/m=7/news=neymar-out-of-world-cup-2399739.html
If that's not evidence enough of how serious the shock was, nothing else is. We can't help but feel sorry for the guy.
-
That Tiger Knee to the back looked fucking painful. Thankfully he doesn't need to be surgically intervened, but vertebrae injuries are super serious business. Neymar is really lucky to be out just for 4-6 weeks and, hopefully, not have any long lasting damage to his body afterwards.
Zúñiga probably didn't intend to hurt him that much, but the knee must've been intentional. You can't hit someone with such violence and pretend it was unintentional. The FIFA should do something about that action, cause it's stuff like this that can break a player's career, not a harmless bite to the back.

Same here… I felt his pain just by watching the slow-motion replay.
Remember Zidane's headbutt on Materazzi at the World Cup 2006's final? That was nothing compared to this and he was punished accordingly (as far as I know).
The only way it could be more serious is if that was a leg-breaking injury - literally.
-
Brasil + Refree + FIFA vs germany will be fun hehehehe
-
The second half of the match was such a mixed bag. Both teams were finally playing, but there was so much violence and dirt, that one had to wonder if the referee was on field anywhere. Neymar didn't deserve that. I wish Colombia who have given us such good games before could have went out in a more dignified manner. On the other hand, if Brazil continue to pick up their game, they might have a chance against Germany later.
But the single best moment of the match? That goes to David Luiz hugging crying James Rodriguez in the end. Manly adorable.
-
Iam really glad Gerrmany advanced to the next round…iam always so nervous, it
s ridicilous! Now having the dream semi-final vs Brazil. Thiago Silva and Neymar won
t play, what is really sad, but we Germans know how it is when the best players are missing in such crucial games. (2006 Frings and 2010 Mueller)
I think Brazil will fight with their whole nation behind them, but even with those two missing players i would have judged Germany stronger.
Its always amazing what you can do with the crowd on your side, because Brazil didn
t look strong at all and just focused on Neymar, which isnt a positive sign in a team game. So my fingers are crossed for Germany, but it will be a damn close one non the less, Brazil won
t give away such a huge opportunity without fighting like berserks. -
Matuidi's kick to Onazi's ankle broke his leg in two places. Giroud's kick to Von Bergen's face broke his cheekbone and he may have suffered permanent eye damage. Then there was Marchisio's kick to Arevalo's knee, which fortunately didn't cause any injury but which could have had some nasty consequences as well.
Those are just three things that happened during this WC that I can remember from the top of my head. There have probably been more incidents.
I'm not saying Neymar's case isn't bad, but it just gets more attention because it's Neymar. Zúñiga could/should have gotten a card for it, but stuff like this doesn't earn players lengthy suspensions; and I don't think it should. In most cases players don't intend to break their opponents bones with these kind of tackles; but things like Zidane's headbutt and Suarez's biting are aggressive actions that aren't part of playing the actual game, that's why those things can earn you a punishment that isn't a regular suspension because of a red card.

This is very true. To be honest I think Germany won't have a very hard time winning that match.

I think Zúñiga's intentions are a bit debatable there. I mean, a kick to the leg is something you see thousands of times every game, but. . .a knee to the back? There was absolutely no way that he needed to knee Neymar's back (and if Neymar's broken vertebrae is something to go by, with such strength) in order to retrieve the ball.
I think that's close to an aggression, honestly, Neymar or no Neymar being on the receiving end.

Yeah, you may be right, he probably did "more" than he should have.
I was gonna write something more, but I'm not really sure what point I'm even trying to make, haha :P. I don't wanna seem like I'm saying that it's not a serious injury or something.
-
You could see the injury was real because Neymar fell on the ground naturally instead of rolling 7 times, grabbing his knee, open his mouth like he is screaming in unbearble pain and then proceed to stand up and run like noting happened.

I approve of this post. Tired of seeing actors on the field instead of grown men. This world cup should be renamed drama cup, I don't recall national level soccer being filled with crybabies that possess bigger labias than seasoned hookers.
-
Hmm, I've seen plenty of comments, specially on Twitter and national sports online diaries, going down the "serves him right for being such a comedian! NOW he'll taste real pain!" route.
It's fucking creepy. A back injury can leave you crippled for life. He's fucking lucky he doesn't need to be intervened, this could've been really tragic. Comedian or not, his behaviour has NOTHING to do with getting a fierce knee to the back.
-
Neymar's injury sounds terrible yeah. And I'm sure Brazil will miss him in the upcoming match(es).
But dramatic acting when hurt is a part of football I think. Everyone does it and players just try to get an advantage of the situation.Anyways, Arg-Bel coming up. I don't think we'll win, but as long as we don't lose shamefully, I'm happy. At least we got this far.
But still, go Red Devils! -

Argentina's defense is a joke. I think they start with f*cking Demichelis today? Give me a break. That's sweet candy for guys like Hazard, De Bruyne or whoever plays as a center-forward, be it Origi or Lukaku.
Messi and Di Maria are holding the whole team on their shoulders, and they've both been in better shape than they're currently are.
-
Demichelis is good defender, atleast i remember him to be good

Origi's at the front today, with Mirallas and Eden. But then Argentina would have to get to defending :p I'm most concerned for how Kompany and Courtois are going to handle Messi…
-
-
If Messi and De Maria don't have a good day Argentina is done for, that's what I think. The ridiculously weak defense will be their demise. I just hope the game will be more fair. I am not saying they shouldn't touch each other, I'd love to see a fast paced, physical game, but if the game starts to go out of hand the referee has to take decisive action!
-
Aww Vince switched between French and Dutch :d
-
Argentina seriously struggled against Switzerland, and with just some more luck for the Swiss the outcome of that match might just as well have been the other way around. So I think Belgium definitely has a chance today, but they have to play better than they did in the group stage if they want to do something with that chance.
Imo Argentina and Belgium are both teams that should be able to play better than we've seen of them so far during the tournament.
-
Oh, already a goal for Argentina! That was quick!
-
Beautiful reaction shot from Higuain
-
Higuain did good.
-
Well, I guess that's what I meant with playing better than they've done so far :P
-
Damn, that was fast.
-
Di Maria's out. That's like half of Argentina's potential.
Super disapointing Belgium. And Higuain is on fucking fire, his best game in all of this World Cup.
-
Yup, Argentina won. No shocker there.
-
Argentina is in the semifinals and that is all I wanted from them.
-
Daww, it's over.
Not a very good match, we played a little better in the second half, but not good enough.Oh well, I'm still happy we even got this far. I remember in October everyone was freaking out just because we were even qualified.
Looking forward to Euro '16! :p -
What's going on in these quarter-finals!? Seriously, these teams that have been playing well and been pleasant to watch so far were so boring and disappointing now. France didn't play shit against Germany, Colombia only woke up for the last 15 minutes against Brazil, Belgium played 0 - complete zero - against a rather boring and slow Argentina, especially after Di Maria exited. Worst round of the WC so far. Really underwhelming. Only the end of Colombia - Brazil has been exciting so far.
-
This WC has been a borefest since the group stage ended.
-
Now to decide who to root for in Netherlands vs Costa Rica. Maybe I can do both?

I'm calling it now. The finals will be Brasil - Argentina because the tournament is totally ridded :ninja:
//
I love how they show these top 5 lists after games.
Not surprised that Suarez was #1 in the list about biggest brain farts in the tournament.
Cameron's bad team spirit as #2 is well justified too. I don't think I've ever seen anything like it before… -
Actually, ever since the group matches ended, this World Cup has taken a huuuge turn for the worst. The worst meaning super boring.
I guess it's understandable; in only one game it's decided if you're in or out, so everyone plays as safe as possible. But this makes the games even more boring, since there're literally 0 risks taken.
And today's second half was beyond horrible. The game had no continuity whatsoever, and there was a stop every 10-15 seconds. Such a shitty game.
-
It's really bad what happened to neymar. But that aside, I'm glad he is not going to play against germany.^^ Don't know who to root for between netherlands and costa rica, wouldn't mind either one winning.
-
What an unbelievably boring game. Commentator, "this game is expected to be an offensive fest for football fans!!" …90 minutes later half the audience is asleep while the rest lost interest and walked away. Yesterday it happened to France vs Germany and today Argentina vs Belgium followed suit. Way to go, World Cup. As if anyone wants to watch this defensive shitfest.

Ehhh I liked the round of 16, although it wasn't as interesting as the group stage. But the quarter finals… God. Awful. Just pray that the match later is going to be interesting. I don't care who wins, don't care if the Netherlands stick 6 goals, whatever. Just want a damn interesting fun game!! >8C

Hehe thanks! That perfectly describes me right now at the world cup. I'm losing hours of study on molecular biology for this kind of football? Bleh.
