Okay, I guess this is enough to get an actual game going. If you've signed up but not posted in a while, check in. Use it as an opportunity to get a "suggestion". If everyone's actually hanging around we can start by Friday.
1. Third Party Presence
2. "Gotcha"
3. Fool/Jester
4. Jailer
Present! I'm excited to get started~
Am I the only one who pronounced Huschel the way we were supposed to? :S
Dude, you just crossed my mind the other day as a person who was probably kidnapped by aliens because they disappeared without a trace from the face of the forum. Welcome back.
Thanks Mastello! I honestly don't even know the reason why I left. Maybe I did get kidnapped and failed to notice it myself. I'll be sure to stick around more often! (and hopefully not seep away into the darkness again)
Haba-chan's on my mental list of people who would probably be really annoying kidnappees.
I don't quite know how to feel about this. :wassat: Love ya, trapped! :D
As for suggestions, I really liked those partner things we did waaay back where we were paired with someone at night and had our own board to talk on and everything. I don't really have anything else in mind to expand on that concept, but I really liked those type of games. I'm also completely for having a third party. Oh! And maybe some super crazy power roles too!
ALSO I SAW YOU POST THERE, VOR! Why aren't you playing? D:
Bogart will the game be on an external site?
I will be the very best like no one ever lynch me i'm maf

What a twist~~~~
I had to laugh.

Just asking in advance, Bogart, could you specify the Mason role for this game? Do Masons know eachother's identity?
I don't think I've ever played a game with Masons before and the wiki is pretty vague about it.
I pity the fool?

Well, from my own experience in my first game, you get messaged privately by the head mason (who might turn out to be a sexy but slightly crazy fox) after he/she masons you and then you can converse freely about anything in secret. It is very private and romantic and you might fall in pseudolove. After a while your mason friend becomes too prominent so the evil serial killer giraffe kills him off, so you have to avenge him by putting together a motley crew and gathering enough ammunition (or votes) to get rid of the giraffe.
I believe there are anonymous variants of the Mason role, which I imagine might be less exciting since you're not sure how sexy your partner is. Also I think you can mason more than one person, but my mason partner didn't do that (I think) because that would be cheating (or it just wasn't part of the game).
Oooh, fools~ This is going to be an interesting game… evil laugh
Chain of Fools (Open Setup, Standard Rules apply)
3 Mafia, 11 Townies
Power Roles
1 Sane Cop, 1 Insane Cop, 1 Tracker, 2 Masons, 1 Jailer
2 Mafia Roleblockers, 1 Mafia Goon
Special Rules
"Gotcha": ALL players are given an optional side-mission. Successfully completing this mission alters your alignment to Third Party and your role to Fool. This only lasts until the next day.
If a player succeeds at these missions three times, the change becomes permanent.
If either Cop targets a Fool, their alignment will be shown as Fool.
Role PMs (essentially)
! You are a Cop. Each night you may select a target. The next day you will learn your target's alignment. A Sane Cop is always told the target's true alignment. An Insane Cop is always told the target's opposing alignment (except for Fools, which are correctly identified as Fools). You are one of these, but are not explicitly told which. You are Town, and win when the Mafia is eliminated.
! You are a Tracker. Each night you may select a target. You will learn who that target visited the next day. You are Town, and win when the Mafia is eliminated.
! You are a Jailer. At each day's end you may select a target. That target will be jailed: they cannot use abilities they may have, and cannot be targeted by abilities (including Mafia kills). You may speak to the target in a separate area during the night, after which they are released. You are Town, and win when the Mafia is eliminated.
! You are a Mason. Along with other Masons, you may speak in a separate area. Masons have a single-use ability: at night they may target a player to recruit into the Masons. It wouldn't be Masons without lots of rules and guidelines, so…
-If one Mason dies, the recruitment can be done alone by the surviving member.
-Both Masons are alive, both "move" to recruit the player. They must both be blocked and/or jailed for the recruitment to fail.
-Should recruitment fail, their single-use ability remains available the next night.
-If the Masons attempt to recruit a Mafia member, all Masons die on the spot.
-Masons that die are not replaced.
-The recruit is forcibly made into a Mason; it cannot be declined.
-Any previous alignment or power is lost when a player is changed into a Mason.
-Masons are Town, and win when the Mafia is eliminated.
! You are a Vanilla Townie. You have no special abilities. You are Town (obviously), and win when the Mafia is eliminated.
! You are a Mafia Roleblocker. Each night you may select a target. Your target cannot use their abilities, if they have any.
! You are a Mafia Goon. You have no special abilities.
! (This, of course, means you are part of the Mafia. You may speak with your fellow Mafia members in a separate area. Additionally, each night the mafia may select a target. That player is killed. The Mafia wins when the number of Mafia equals or exceeds the number of Town.)
! You are a FOOL! Your successful shenanigans have altered your alignment and role! Your only goal now is to be lynched- if you're lynched, the game is over, YOU WIN!
! (This role is temporary, and will be reverted upon the start of the next day)
or
(This is your third time as the FOOL! It is now PERMANENT!)
Playing The Fool: For those unaware, the fool is something both Town and Mafia wish to avoid. Lynching one ends the game, ensuring no one but the fool wins. Killing a fool, however, does not trigger its win condition, meaning Fools must be wary of the Mafia. Also, the Fool must not be exposed (via report or simply via observation), as they will be never be lynched, making a win impossible. For the sake of the game, be aware of your surroundings, and know that allowing a Fool (or becoming a fool) can make it harder for you to win.
"Gotcha" Notes
Power-role players (including all Mafia) that succeed in "Gotcha" lose their abilities for the night, as they are now no-ability Fools.
"Gotcha" missions will not be announced should they be completed. They are also considered complete by my discretion alone . Please understand.
"Gotcha" missions that are not completed remain your mission for the next day.
Efforts will be made to increase the difficulty should you succeed and receive a new "Gotcha" mission.
If you are stuck and/or unhappy, I will allow a one-time pass to switch your current"Gotcha" mission for a new one.
These are meant to enhance the enjoyment of the main game, not derail it. I will do my best to ensure the missions aren't too obnoxious or time-consuming.
Thanks Bogart!! Looks great :)
Could I just confirm, jailing shows up on a tracker's report, right?
Ok, I'm reading Masons can speak to fellow Masons, Jailers can speak to Targets, and Mafia can speak to fellow Mafia in a "separate area" but is there a designated "separate area"?
Are they allowed to communicate through PM's? Skype? Instant Messenger? And are you told, when the game starts, who their fellow Mafia members or Masons are through a PM perhaps?
And I believe, if I understand correctly, you can't speak here (on this thread) at "night". I'm guessing there are cycles of "night" and "day"? Are those real time 24 hour cycles or "in-game" cycles? Basically, I'm asking how do you tell when it's night or day in this game when I know plenty of us are operating on different time zones.
Lastly, can you out someone as a Townie or a Mafia? For instance, if you're the Jailer and you target someone and then start talking to them in a "separate area" at "night" they know you're the Jailer because only the Jailer can be talking to them while they're in jail…right?
When you are released the next day are you allowed to announce on this thread EXAMPLE: "Bogart is the Jailer! Don't lynch him fellow Townies!" or are all roles supposed to be strictly secret and never thrown out in the open? If a Cop believes he has a pretty good idea of his role (between sane and insane) can he announce who he believes to be a Mafia or Townie?
Normally a quick topic is ideal for mafia communication.
Normally a quick topic is ideal for mafia communication.
I don't know why I'm asking all these questions since I'm probably going to be eliminated right off the bat but I feel like I don't even have the basics down.
What's a quick topic? Is it something you can do on these forums?
Its a separate website we use. Its been handy for just these occasions so that separate groups can converse when they are allowed to.
Quicktopic.com
The rules are on the front page, but if you'll wait a moment I can put mine up for reference.
General Rules
1. The object of the game is to achieve your win condition using your abilities, working together with allies and lynching your suspects. For the enjoyment of all, always play towards your win condition.
2. In order for a participant to be lynched, a player must type "Vote: PlayerName" or "Vote Lynch: PlayerName".
3. Players may solicit a No Lynch by writing "Vote: No Lynch". If the majority votes "No Lynch", the day ends without a lynch.
4. Contestants may rescind or adjust their vote, but may only do so by first entering "Unvote" followed by any further modifications. All voting and/or unvoting must be done in BOLD or it will not be counted.
5. Once a majority has been reached, the current count immediately validates a lynch and ends the Day Phase, whether or not the moderator is present. Un-voting or changing of votes after the fact will not alter the outcome.
6. Personal Messaging, E-mail and any other means of communication outside of the game thread are prohibited. Discussion about the game (between active players) is restricted to the main thread. There may be exceptions depending on Roles given by the moderator.
7. A direct copy or printscreen of your role is forbidden. You may freely paraphrase (or falsify) them.
8. Deceased players may not post in the main thread at any time. Non-players are asked to refrain from posting until the game ends.
9. During the Night Phase, no player may post in the main thread.
10. DO NOT EDIT YOUR POSTS ONCE THE GAME OFFICIALLY STARTS. BREAKING THIS RULE WILL RESULT IN A MOD-KILL.
Truthfully, Mafia requires a level of secrecy that can only be managed with full cooperation from all players. Everyone must maintain the integrity of the game to the best of their ability in order for the game to be enjoyable. People who break these rules will be punished.
Also, Day and Night is usually just short for the more specific "Day Phase" and "Night Phase". You are always told exactly how long these phases are, and can freely ask the moderator for an update on either vote count or time remaining in a Day Phase. Usually for a game this size each Day Phase will be set at 72 hours, and the Night Phase being maybe half that. It may change depending on how active things are.
The jailer, like the masons, are given freedom to decide some of these things, as it may suit their personal strategies. Quicktopics don't require name identification, and so anonymity can help. Jailers who pick Mafia obviously don't want to reveal their identity, and Masons may feel the same way. If you don't know their identity, you can't reveal it.
**Anything you need to know will be explained to you depending on what you need to know. If your role doesn't involve something (like having teammates or a quicktopic), you don't have to worry about it. If it does, everything will be explained/provided to you.
And as always, questions you have during the game can always be sent via PM to the Moderator.** (that's me)
