What disturbed me is that it WAS turned into a joke. And I know its supposed to be a joke about tentacle hentai but that just continues to make it worse. The fact that the mangaka was so nonchalant about it just blows my mind. Theres a great quote that I cant find that perfectly encapsulates what I'm trying to say… But I don't really wanna talk about it(even though I responded), I'm really sick of this conversation. Not this particular one, I've just been involved in a ridiculous amount of gender issue conversations lately and I need a break. Although if you'd like to discuss this I can PM or something, this isnt really the place for it. I have some more things to say regarding the murder attempt and how that is different. But I understand if you don't want to, I don't really want to either but I feel like its my obligation as a human.

You're so far from being on the same page as this person that it's kind of hilarious to go off on a tangent where this supposed core folly you're attempting to expose is unrelated. This has nothing to do with separating reality from fiction, which I swear to god I haven't even heard as a phrase since 2006.

There's an incredibly ingrained rape culture in Japan first off and sometimes, the implications and way a joke is told, along with its subject matter, is what makes someone disapprove of it. Making light of serious subject matter isn't a problem itself (i.e. coping mechanisms, or tragedies involving death can seem hilarious as fuck), though you seem to have taken nothing of the sort away from what poopbucket was saying. But then again, sometimes it is, when the angle of where the humor should be derived is concerned.

Quite frankly there's nothing wrong with disapproving of a joke, or being uncomfortable with it. If somebody thinks something is without taste, or it upsets them, they sure can voice their dislike of it, just as you are allowed to whine and scream about how hilarious you find it, which I can remind you you have supported with statements like "I have a friend who was raped" and the ever arrogant and derailed and point-missing "I CAN SEPARATE FICTION FROM REALITY", which appears to have an unaired accompaniment of "I'm incredibly mature and logical and you're a weenie sensitive baby."

There's more to humor than just being able to distance yourself from something to laugh at it. There's a lot of layers that come with when a joke can be surrounding a controversial subject, as I said above. And don't ever think somebody is wrong for ever being offended.

I wasn't trying to start an argument so I won't prolong it, I just felt that his position on the joke was so far from what it should be (regarding its intent) that I had to give some examples on why I thought that.

Maybe I sounded too judgmental and I'm sorry for that, but I really did state my opinion, and I didn't talk about that person that I know just because I felt like it but because it was a perfect example of what I was trying to say (of not finding something funny in real life at all, because it isn't, but finding one particular naughty joke about something related to that topic funny)(also, that comparison with racism is really lacking. If you must bring racism to the table, the logic behind what I said applied to racism would be "I know someone who suffered at the hands of racism because that person was black, and I don't find that funny at all, but I might find a particular joke related to that topic funny nonetheless" and not what you said).

I do agree that some jokes have really poor taste and humor shouldn't justify making fun of everything but I feel that this particular joke was very well delivered and could perfectly fit in a movie like "Scary Movie" or something like that, so trying to tie it to Japan's culture of rape or just about any other element of the real world is simply looking into it too deeply/seriously from a real world perspective.

Obviously, he's free to dislike or like any kind of joke that he hears/reads but, in short, I was just disagreeing with him and I stated why I didn't feel his perspective was the most adequate to appreciate the joke.

The term rape culture, like I said, is pretty vague in regards to its extremities, but it was shorthand convenient at the time. Japanese progress in regards to gender issues has actually been going pretty good in the long haul as far as awareness and stuff goes– I'd have said there are lots of places in the world that have issues in regards to victim blaming or trivialization of sexual or gender problems, including America. I'm not singling out anybody, as far as this goes I was saying the person was free to not find something funny if it particularly hits home in regards to social problems, or if they felt it was out of taste?

For the record, higher rape rates are solely based on reported cases and not ones that go under the radar. It doesn't matter because this isn't an actual discussion on which nation has worst sex anything and I'm not here to compare, or put down any place. But I have to be really, really blunt and say that I don't want to argue with you, because it seems you're misonstruing this as a holier-than-thou attitude when I've only ever really mentioned Japan in a single sentence before going "but I have paid attention to its gender politics, since those tend to be relevant to me!" I pay attention to the gender politics of a lot of places, really, since it was a subject I once was working in.

Some kind of nerve was struck here and I very greatly apologize. I would prefer to apologize outright, for having upset you, which in turn upsets me. But I felt an explanation was in order and this is the best I can do. If you still feel I am being unreasonable, then I can do nothing else.

This is a fascinating and enjoyable read. And with it ranking high in the magazine poll, I really want to see how well it will do in the actual sales. A niche crowd following is almost certain at this point.

I liked Bitch-sensei the moment she flawlessly explained the difference between "bitch" and -vich. Well, for now she has settled in so to say but I am looking forward to what Matsui has in store for her further.

Speaking of Matsui, all the little easter eggs dealing with western culture he puts in his manga are so fun. This side of his writing makes him stand out in the same way Sorachi does - no one in Jump references as much western movies as he does.

Silence, we've discussed in PM to not clutter the baggage on the thread, and came to somewhat of an understanding of where we stand.

I know he didn't "mean" it. I've explained why it's offensive, and how it would sound in a identical situation, and what the emotional response would be. I've also said, that allowing "labeling" of stereotype opens a can of worms about bigotry, and in the exact same sentence said I'm not calling HIM a bigot, but rather, what it can lead to.

I want more AssClass please. I'm kinda sad that they're scanlating this series slower than the rest, it's really entertaining. I love that matsui retains his funny background scenes like the ones he did in neuro (like the Doraemon pic on Bitch-sensei's iPad). It's fun looking at small tidbits like that.

After seeing all the attention this series was getting, I read through all the chapters today. All in all, a really darn good series so far. It's got great characters, great art, an original story and most of all I love the humor.

There are a few things I wish Matsui would develop more, but it's still pretty early in the series, so I'm sure he'll get to it.Mainly, I really hope Matsui develops Nagisa more, considering he's supposed to be the main character.

My biggest complaint, though, is that sometimes the characters act really stupid. Like, why did Irina try to kill Koro with regular bullets? Shouldn't she have known they would have no effect on him? Why would she refuse to use specialized bullets that were sanctioned by the government? (hell, all the world's governments).

Oh well, still a great series on the whole.

Oh, and how appropriate is it that Matsui made a reference to Jack Sparrow?

I caught up with this after putting it off since the first chapter.There was just too much that wasn't really doing it for me. Like the school setting for instance. I usually avoid these like a plague when it comes to shonen as they are usually dread with generic character designs. The teacher also didn't do it for me as I thought his appearance was more of a gimmick to look different in purpose of drawing in attention. Maybe it still is, but.,.. I unno. Wished there was a bit more expressive variety like this guy.

Aside from that, I like the whole "potential to destroy the world" plot thread. I'm not really sure where a story like this can go as I have no idea when the actual assassination of the teacher is going to happen, nor really know what will happen in result of killing him, but I'm interested even though it's dragging/being teased a whole lot.

Not a big fan yet, but hopefully by chapter 20 or so, I'd decide whether or not the manga is worth the commitment.
