Disney's Star Wars

Apparantly Damien Lindelof is going to be writing the Star Wars trilogy… So much for me saying they couldn't get worse. Now they're going to make even less sense than the Phantom Menace.

Don't believe rumors you hear that originate from AintItCoolNews.
Though I'd be happy to take Lindelof if Brad Bird was actually directing, he's pretty much the ideal choice. Hell, Incredibles did the Endor bike chase and the pod race on Tatooine… in one sequence!
-
Lindelof is one of the worst writers in the industry so I definitely wouldn't. Give me Joss Whedon any day.
-
Lindelof is a fine writer. He does good intrigue, and dialogue, and he's a well known SW fan. As long as he has someone to tell him "make sure you answer the questions you raise." (And LOST was designed to run for six years, and Prometheus was entirely a sequel bait film.)
Brad Bird knows story and action and character and balance like few others. He'd keep those weaknesses aspect in check. Scripts can be rewritten and tweaked.
But again, while Brad Bird is pretty much the ideal dream choice, I wouldn't put any credence into a rumor started by AICN. They haven't been relevant in 10 years.
Whedon is going to have his hands full with Avengers 2. No way he's anywhere near this. Maybe for episode 8 or 9 though.

Lindelof is one of those obnoxious writers that thinks being deep is sprinkling a lot of pseudophilosophical crap, throwing in a lot of dark, edgey scenes and raising as many questions as humanly possible. He takes pretentious writing to new levels. Never mind tying the philosophical themes to the story or actually having a story that makes sense or actually starting a script with the answers rather than the questions. Prometheus was one of the worst movies I've seen this year and don't even get me started on Lost. The farther he's away from any movie let alone something as simple and basic as Star Wars, the better.
Brad Bird would be a great choice though.

Worst writers in the industry? He's nowhere near as bad as cough cough Ehren Krugercoughcough*

Speaking of Whedon, am I the only guy that finds him overrated? I've seen some eps of Buffy and some of Serenity not hugely impressed.
I found the Avengers kinda underwhelming, I didn't really get much from it. I sorta hope for a great writer who's not known. Though unlikely, maybe one of the good expanded universe writers can give it a shot.
-
I like Whedon a lot though there's a snarkiness to his writing that some might take issue with. Only thing of his that I downright hate is Cabin in the Woods. He gets a lot of respect from me for being one of the few writers in the industry who knows how to write female characters.
-
I think people need to lay off Whedon. His name is mentioned in everything lately, as if only he can execute something good. I much rather have a director for this one who could induce a darker tone, along with cinematogrophy - totally misspelled that. Not that its no longer the SW that is well known, but just the tone. Like MI3 and MI4: Ghost Protocol. The fourth was awesome, but also perhaps too light, too many jokes - even if they were funny. The third one was also awesome, bit it was darker, more personal concering his wife, as well as having a threatning villain.
-
Does this mean Hayden Christensen will reprise his role as the ghost of Anakin? Or since Lucas isn't involved anymore, that won't happen.
-
EW reporting people in Hollywood think Dave Filoni will direct it.
Filoni is the supervising director of the Clone Wars show and is a hardcore Star Wars fan. And has tweeted about having a major meeting with "The Master" on Monday.
He'd… make a lot of sense, given that he's been working on the property nonstop for the last several years and is a totally proven commodity.

lol…. I wondered if it's actually been done. I tried searching but I all found was this.

I haven't been to fanfiction.net in years, I shudder to think of what is there these days. -
Star Wars could be easily added to into the Kingdom Hearts' fantasy, with the dark side and such things, though, there should only be a fight with Darth Vader, not a conclusion with him. It creeps me out just to think Sora defeating Darth Vader, even if Luke is like a party character at the moment.
Also "JarJar and Goofy vs the World" would be interesting :ninja: -
The prequels weren't that good but they werent awful. They introduced many things about the past of the SW's Universe, including a couple of the best Jedi Masters ever (to name a few, a younger Yoda, who was really a ass kicker, Mace, and Ki Adi Mundi). Also over 100 books and comics and not to mention 2 cartoons.
Here's a new article http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/JoshWildingNewsAndReviews/news/?a=69483#comments

At least with Luke in this 40's, you can fairly easily get away with believing a lot of the EU stuff already happened. IIRC a lot of Zahn's books take place within 20 years after ROTJ. (HttE + 5, HoT +10, Survivor's Quest +3)

If that didn't happen after The Phantom Menace, I think we're pretty safe.

Star wars clone wars will be moving over to Disney XD, hopefully that doesn't mean they will tone it down. -

The funny thing is that the people who keep mentioning Whedon all the time for projects like this probably didn't even know who the hell he was a year ago and only watched the Avengers.

Rumored directors: Very interesting choices. Ugh Josh Whedon, he's not that great people, having seen most of his work I can safely say while he's an inspired choice he isn't the best. I am intrigued about Alfonso Cauron since he is not only a great director, but he is also experienced with another action adventure series similar in vein to Star Wars. Y'all know what I'm talking about cough cough* The boy who livescoughlighting shaped scar* so him taking on Star Wars shouldn't be alien territory to him.
I also think he's proven with Prisoner of Askaban that he can balance humor, and darkness relatively well which is what you need for a good Star Wars film. If anything, he's would be an ideal choice if not for a couple of directors I'm thinking about now(Steven Spielberg or Brad Bird)
Disney wants to restore the original versions eh? Well assuming this rumor is true that is.
-
I wonder if Disney will speed up my Tie Fighter remake. I just hope if they do remake it, they don't screw it up like many are so apt to.

For the doubters….all I can say is, "I find your lack of faith disturbing"
haha, in all honesty I'm a huge Star Wars fan. I first saw the original trilogy when I was four and have loved the series ever since.
I will say, I think the prequels are not as abysmal as many say. I believe they have some very apparent flaws and vary in quality significantly from the OT, but they're not that awful. They're not great, but not as bad as some would say. I will say I find Attack of the Clones to easily be the weakest in the series by far. The romance dialogue is just so horrible and Hayden Christensen was a horrible choice. I don't know he would've worked, but I always thought James Franco had a similar look but could at least act.
To me, the problem with the prequels was never the story - there actually was a very solid story underneath and some awesome characters. The action scenes were awesome, but the special effects were way overdone, particularly in RotS. I think Phantom Menace had some good looking / appropriately detailed special effects. The problem for me with the prequel movies was ALWAYS the execution of the story. George Lucas is incredibly creative and the core story of the prequel movies was good and worth telling....the problem was the writing and direction. I will reiterate that I don't think they were horrible, but the acting felt too rigid and the dialogue at times was horrible (looking at you Attack of the Clones).
I think the perfect example here is Star Wars: The Clone Wars. George Lucas serves a very similar role to what it seems he'll be doing for the sequel trilogy (and beyond) while Dave Filoni heads up the actual direction, writing, and production of the series. The Clone Wars has been AWESOME and continues to improve the longer it runs. I even liked season 1, but toward the end of season 2 and beyond the show evolved and grew into something truly amazing.
I think with the Disney buyout this really opens the doors for Star Wars: Underworld to finally move into production as well. It's the perfect show to pair up with S.H.I.E.L.D. on TV (by the way, really excited about this as well; Agent Coulson! I hope Joss Whedon working on the series means Adam Baldwin could be part of the show. Colonel John Casey would be a perfect SHIELD Agent....as long as he can take some time to do a Chuck movie if Fedak, Schwartz, and Zach Levi get something together).
I'm a bit worried that Clone Wars will be lost in the shuffle....starting in 2015 it seems we'll be shifting the series predominantly into the sequel era. I expect Clone Wars would naturally end by that point anyway, but it's status as a prequel era series leaves it in a bit of a precarious position. The fact that it airs on Cartoon Network is of course concerning. While it could move to Disney XD, I hope that this won't impact the show's content at all. I hear Disney did a number on DBZ Kai and Naruto Shippuuden in terms of editing. I hope they wouldn't have a problem with scenes like the SPOILERS execution of Pong Krell, Ahsoka decapitating 4 Mandalorians, etc. END SPOILERS The show has gotten quite dark as it grows closer to Revenge of the Sith. I've grown to really love Ahsoka as a character (I really hope she simply leaves the Jedi Order and thus survives Order 66) and I'm very happy with the way this show has characterized Anakin Skywalker. With the prequel movies, Anakin always seemed like an emotionally unstable, angry young person. We never once saw him as Obi-Wan's brother....he was an ungrateful obnoxious student in Attack of the Clones and the two barely had any scenes together in Revenge of the Sith. Conversely, in Clone Wars we finally saw the Anakin Skywalker described by old Ben in A New Hope. He was truly a hero - a likeable one at that. In the first few seasons (and even now) Anakin was a really likeable character and you can easily see his relationship with Obi-Wan. Watching this series makes his decent into the dark side all the more tragic as you finally get a real glimpse of his character. To me, if nothing else Clone Wars has the definitive version of Anakin Skywalker - a hero with a dark streak which slowly manifests itself as the war progresses and Palpatine slowly manipulates him. I love how diabloical Palpatine is on Clone Wars as well. Clone Wars has always felt like a natural fit on Cartoon Network. While the channel does have its fair share of more child friendly shows, they always have a few series like Clone Wars and Adventure Time which also appeal to older fans. I just don't see that with Disney XD (though I don't even have Disney XD with my basic cable package so....that kinda sucks if the show does move). With the show already 5 seasons in with 1, 2, or maybe 3 seasons left AT THE MOST, wouldn't it be better to let it finish out it's run and keep its established fanbase? I mean yes, it's Star Wars and the fans will follow. But many don't have Disney XD and regular Disney XD viewers who perhaps don't tune in to CN and haven't seen the show yet won't be able to just jump right in with the series so close to Revenge of the Sith. Clone Wars to me has made the prequel era such an interesting time in the Star Wars canon that I really want to see the show finish the right way, not cancelled due to a corporate buyout. While ultimately I think Disney buying Lucasfilm is a great move, I hope it won't be negative for Clone Wars.
To summarize what I would hope to see:
-Clone Wars handled in a way that doesn't hurt the content of the series or destroy the amazing work that Filoni and crew have already done; We need a fitting conclusion to the series to know what happens to Ahsoka Tano
-Star Wars Underworld bridging the gap between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope finally going into production and airing alongside SHIELD; Ian McDiarmid as Palpatine would be awesome @_@
I wouldn't worry that Disney will make Star Wars kiddy...they know what they're doing. Not only have Marvel and Pixar flourished under Disney's ownership, but even Disney themselves offer some movies like Pirates of the Caribbean which appeal to older audiences as well as kids. Even going back to the Original Trilogy the series was never super dark, but light and enjoyable for kids and adults. I saw the movies when I was 4 and though I missed a lot of the details I came to appreciate later on, the movies drew me in and inspired me like no other fictional universe (until One Piece and Chuck which I enjoy just as much as Star Wars).
Regardless of the prequel trilogy shortcomings, I have really high hopes for the Star Wars sequel trilogy. I would love to see Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford reprise their roles as an elderly Jedi Master Luke Skywalker and aging Han Solo. I don't know if Carrie Fisher could really play the role of Leia anymore, so perhaps her character could now be one with the force haha. Anthony Daniels and Kenny Baker returning as 3PO and R2 is a must. I'd also really like to see Billy Dee Williams as Lando....and of course Han would be nothing without Chewie (Peter Mayhew).
The fact that Peter Mayhew and Liam Neeson were involved with the Clone Wars is certainly encouraging that the old actors will be willing to return for the sequels if asked.
Marvel has certainly done well under Disney as evidenced by the Cinematic Universe they've created and of course The Avengers.
With GL taking a similar role to his involvement in Clone Wars while leaving directing and writing in more capable hands I think the prequel movies could be truly amazing.
One thing I will say is that while I too have read and enjoyed some Expanded Universe material, I really feel that with the sequels they should be allowed to start completely fresh. I don't think we should hope for Thrawn or the Yuuzhan vong. I think in the canon universe.....no Mara Jade, no Jacen / Jaina / Anakin Solo, no death of Chewbacca...I'm not saying these things are bad.
With Underworld, Clone Wars, and now the prequel trilogy the canon Star Wars universe is growing in such a way that I think it's time to completely break the existing EU from the canon Star Wars universe. Clone Wars already has a number of big contradictions with EU material.
What I would propose is that the existing Expanded Universe only include Episodes I - VI. Trying to retcon Clone Wars is hard enough, but I imagine the sequel trilogy is going to completely contradict the events of the expanded universe should Luke, Han, Chewie, Lando, 3PO, R2, and perhaps Leia be involved in the story. The core cast can't be ALL old, so of course younger cast members would need to be involved as well. I just want to go in to see something completely new - not something built off of or shaped by existing stories. While I enjoy the EU, I'd be interested in a completely fresh take on the post-Return of the Jedi era....a completely blank canvas to build off of. There have always been elements of the EU that felt unnatural to me - honestly I could never really get into the Yuuzhan Vong stories. The movies and Clone Wars (and Underworld should it be mad) obviously take precedence over any existing EU material, so why not just make the split now and save a bunch of fans the trouble of trying to somehow sort things out later?
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
Also, the one thing that's a little concerning is the plan to just keep releasing a new movie every 2 - 3 years past Episode IX
I don't really have a problem with this per say.
However, the release of a new Star Wars movie in the past seemed like such a huge event....I wasn't alive to see the originals in theaters, but when I learned that they were making MORE .... that the prequels were coming out, it was just amazing. I was 9 when I first saw Phantom Menace, 12 for Attack of the Clones, and 15 for Revenge of the Sith...the flaws I see now weren't as apparent back then of course. But I just remember how big the Star Wars movies seemed compared to everything else. Wavering quality or not, just knowing that you're seeing a new Star Wars movie was just so....awesome. It's hard to describe the feeling. Like you know when you're going to see a big new movie like The Dark Knight Rises or the Avengers, something that has been building for years it just feels like you're seeing something really special.
I'm worried that will be lost if they continue to "Episodes X - XII" then "XIII - XV" etc.
I'm not saying they need to stop at Episode IX, but perhaps do as Lucas has done and wait 10+ years between "Episodes".
They could easily make other movies in between about the Old Republic era, or the era between Episodes VI and VII etc. perhaps focusing on characters outside the main group of characters.
I think it's obvious that it's only been the past decade or so that George Lucas has tried to force the idea that Star Wars was all about the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker. To me this always diminished Luke's role in the series. We know from Clone Wars Season 3 that there's much more to this whole "Chosen One" prophecy than was apparent in the prequel movies. There's certainly room to expand on this and the Skywalker family legacy in the main "Episodes I - ?" line of movies. I just feel these movies need to remain cohesive...which is largely why I feel Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, etc. need to be involved in VII - IX.

Glad to see this wretchd little late 80's stereotype is still alive and well.
Seriously, I thought we moved past it once we realised the Big Bang Theory is contrived and kinda stupid.
-
True that haha
Nerds can be….well, awesome!
Even Mark Hamill himself was on Chuck!
-
I don't think Disney can outbad Lucas himself (who knows).
I would not mind another vision of the prequels.
If I was given the job of directing the prequels :
- I would not show Vader or do something that heavily suggest its him. His introduction is for episode 4. I know the "I am your father" is pretty much known to everyone but I only found out recently what Rosebud was.
- I would not put Yoda in the prequels and would let episode 5 reveal him. However, I would create build up and anticipation about him throughout the prequels.
- I would take out the droids.
- I would definetely add more dialoges between Obiwan and Anakin.
- Make Anakin likable.
- Make Padme a jedi.
- Unlike Plinkett, I am not against the idea of making references, the emperor and Yoda pretty much suggests in episode 6 that Luke is pretty much repeating the mistakes of his father.
-
I don't think Disney can outbad Lucas himself (who knows).
These are the same people who greenlit stuff like Hunchback II.
-
Very poor point, No Maam. Disney has learn from their mistakes, recent marvel and pixar is proof of that.

Star Wars was never among the franchises I care deeply about. All it ever was for me is a mildly exciting space opera set in galaxy far far away. Over the years I haven't grown overly attached to neither the setting nor the characters. To be honest I am not even sure if I finished watching episode II. It simply didn't make me have any strong feelings one way or the other.
However, two years ago I played the first Knights of the Old Republic game and it impessed me in a good way. And lately I have been cathing random Clone Wars episodes on Cartton Network that kept my attention. Perhaps this setting isn't completely lost on me?
I guess I am pretty okay with Star Wars sequels ending in different hands. May be they actually will turn out to be entertaining.
@No:

Well, in your turn you can make a generalization towards terrible posters with Trafalgar Law avatars. Wouldn't that be fun?
-
Well, it's pretty much been said that these will be Episodes 7, 8 and 9. Meaning sequels. Meaning no Old Republic era. Unfortunately.
As far as Lucas is concerned, he told the story he was going to tell. Its Episodes 1-6.
I doubt the new movies will even be called Episode 7,8 & 9.
Its going to be a very new story.
Hell, maybe even set in the future, like perhaps a 1000 years or so. Its time for a new story line. -

I think most people who would vote for Whedon for a SW movie would be fans of Firefly, or even Buffy.
lol you'd be surprised. They maaaaaay have watched Serenity, but it doesn't go further than that. Whedon is hot shit right now so everyone pretends to be a longtime fan. It's kind of like Nolan where everbody praised him to hell but never watched his non-Batman movies (aside from Inception).

Only things I've actually seen of his is all of Firefly. I never really watched Buffy.

What about video games ?
I can imagine Vader dancing with Mickey and Final fantasy characters.

I mean, think of the possibilities. Look at how amazingly Marvel is doing now.
Just think:
Star Wars, Episode VII
Directed by Joss Whedon(that's my final fantasy, unf)
This is actually the most terrifying thing written in the entire thread.

kinect star wars
I will buy a X-box and a Kinect and of course this game and play it untill i die

So I guess this means an HD release of the Holiday Special is inevitable, right ?
Actualy since Disney never had anything to do with it they just might do it. Cause be honest, you would buy it.

- nearly impossible due to scheduling

I wonder who they WILL get for these things, though. I'll probably watch them just because Star Wars.

The non-fanboyish, actual realistic answer, now that's it been said, is likely Dave Filoni, who has been in charge of the Clone Wars show the last several years.
Oh how folks are so willing to forget Alien 4…and Wheadon's secret stash of alien porn :ninja:
The problems with Alien 4 had less to do with Whedon's script and more to do with the crazy french director. Whedon's original script is available online, and it has little resemblance to the final product.
-
Oh…runs off into the interwebs returns
Wow I completely forgotten about that French director and attributed the film's..."wackiness" with Whedon (then again he wrote the script, but the execution was ALL the french guy's vision...especially with that one alien and the ending). Ugh...I hate it when I remind myself that Alien 4 exists. It is such a French movie. -

Are you sure they would bring him on board for a live-action blockbuster?
Prior to Avengers, Whedon's main cards were all for television. And Brad Bird worked in TV before moving to movies.
Star Wars is 90% cgi anyway. He's shown a command of the material and setting, the characters, the history, what the fans want, the specific balance of action and comedy the franchise calls for, and has produced more hours and has more practical experience in directing Star Wars than… anyone. Including Lucas. He's got a good knowledge of everyone at Lucasfilm and the studios already... And he's done it for years, all on a relatively low TV level budget. (Clone Wars actually has a high budget for tv standards, but incredibly low compared to a feature.)
He's even managed to make Jar Jar centric episodes... tolerable.
Plus he's a huge fan. He makes a lot of sense. More than any random big name director that's done project X who would only be on for one movie.
Once his name was said, it made perfect sense. Not the big fancy fanboyish choice, but probably the best one.
We'll probably have an actual announcement sooner rather than later.
-
@RobbyBevard:

You make a REALLY good case for the guy, but I'm still suspicious that he's gonna be screwed out of the job.

Wouldn't be surprised at all if they go for more of a name. But he makes a lot of sense among non-name directors.
Brad Bird does movies?
Iron Giant. Incredibles. Ratatouille. Mission Impossible 4.
