I'm sure Gon is gonna make an appearance, he's to legit of a character to leave out.
Hunter x Hunter II

Greed Island and chimera ant arcs were heavily focused on gon and killua, so having leorio and kurapika being the two mains out of the original 4 would be definitely refreshing.
-
The latest episode of the anime made me feel really sorry for the ants. Seeing the shock on Pouf's face when spitting blood, seeing Youpi lying dead on the ground, Pitou… you know what's with Pitou, and Meruem who soon will realize that he'll die, and he still hasn't remembered Komugi. Palm is right. What they're doing right now is incredibly cruel.
I'm also getting tired of seeing Ikalgo being relevant. Never liked the fact that he was made a part of the arc's final fight. But I do want to see Gyro. Togashi might even remember his existence if we're lucky. -
Another word I'm adding to my hate list is "hype".
We know basically nothing of the Dark Continent. It's too early to say surviving there is just a matter of being strong. -

We know basically nothing of the Dark Continent. It's too early to say surviving there is just a matter of being strong.Netero and Beyond had hard time fighting nature. Also - chimera ants are average animals there.
"Surviving there is a matter of being strong" really is only thing we know about it. -
Really hoping this isn't the final arc

Meanwhile, Hisoka passes him in a windowless van.
I'd really like to read a manga about Hisoka travelling a sparsely-populated Japanese countryside in a windowless van a la YKK
. What they're doing right now is incredibly cruel.
I still think it's weird to assign agency to the Hunters at that point in the story
they had absolutely no clue that the Ants had developed qualities like empathy when they had put the bomb in Netero's stomach. they were in the eyes of the Hunters still the crazy fuckass things that shot children with machine guns so they can feed their sociopath man-eating king
perhaps they died a particularly cruel and brutal death, but it's not like they saw that the ants were actually sort of complex and capable of reason and THEN decided to blow them up with the Rose Bomb. only person who can really be blamed is Netero and maybe Gon. and I don't really think Netero made a bad call there… not that he really gave a fuck anyway. why Palm is moping in the corner professing the cruelty of man is totally beyond me -
Netero and Beyond had hard time fighting nature. Also - chimera ants are average animals there.
"Surviving there is a matter of being strong" really is only thing we know about it.What kind of chimera ants ? Queen level ? Knowing Nen ? Royal guard level ? Meruem level ?
How do you think they fought nature ? Is it a matter of Nen aura or hunting skills ?
I said "just" for a reason. We don't know enough to determine the requirements for someone to survive there.
Of course, a weakling can't survive there but it's too soon to say you need to be at the level of a veteran hunter. Especially, when you're not travelling on your own.
But well, I guess we will have to wait and see. -
it's also worth noting that the Chimera Ants as a species only really became a gigantic hazard once they started to eat human beings and gained the ability to use Nen. that was emphasized as this gigantic never-before-seen biohazard. I think what was meant when it was noted that the Chimera Ants are an average species in the DC were those bird-boar-tiger things we were seeing at the very beginning of the arc. Tough, but manageable. Shit went downhill once they invaded that colony
i think the reason the DC is so dangerous is going to be significantly more insidious. like drinking stream water and ingesting some foreign bacteria that causes you to puke out your organs. surviving in the wild isn't all about killing animals and other predators. someone without Nen could feasibly survive if they had a very good survival sense in regard to fresh water and shelter
-

But well, I guess we will have to wait and see.Is Beyond at least half as strong as his father was? Because if he is, even with his determination he failed to conquer DC.
Also, as you may notice two calamities we actually see in the series (Ants and Nanika if she really is connected to Ai which seems like given) are completely hax compared to the rest of the known HxH world.
And they are average things in DC. Just part of a biome. That makes me think its pretty harsh. Also about ants: there are lots of them. With living queens. What will happen if they eat some of the weakest members of expedition with nen?
Never-before-seen biohazard x 100? -
It's fascinating how versatile and vast the expectations we all have for the DC are. Some of us are bound to be disappointed for one reason or another but it's nonetheless interesting to read all the different comments.

The ants had become an immensely dangerous threat, to the point that even the Netero put a bomb inside him in case his strength wasn't enough. Hadn't he used that bomb, even with the complex ants we saw the world would've changed, inevitably resulting in more deaths than needed. It's not like Meruem would've settled down with Komugi, raising his hybrid ant-humans without a care in the world. Then again, I'm not even sure if Meruem was capable of reproduction in the way we know it.
The point is, I do feel sorry for the ants because of the way they died (fuck you, Gon) but I can understand the reasons behind it. It had to happen. -
The Chimera Ant Arc: Just a really shitty thing that happened
And I like how that can be interpreted in multiple ways
-
I'm joining the no-Gon faction. Sure, he is the main character, but he would just get the focus away from Beyond/Parison/Ging/the Zodiaks, who all are far more interesting people to follow. Let him pause for a while and give Leorio and Kurapika some spotlight; he can join later in the arc, if Togashi feels uncomfortable about a whole (probably very long) arc without the MC
I don't believe there are any "factions" for Gon specifically, but rather for any of the main characters. That being said I'm pretty happy with Kura and Leo.
–----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This expedition into the Dark Continent sounds unprecedented. There's no telling how big or prepared previous expeditions were in regards to the Dark Continent. There's no telling what happened to them until we get there or Beyond starts reminiscencing.
-
Pariston: Confirmed pshycopath, possible serial killer.

I know one way Togashi can handle it so that we can all get disappointed!
Hint: it comes with a thread title change…and tears.
Then again, I'm not even sure if Meruem was capable of reproduction in the way we know it.
Didn't the members of the invasion party mentally prepare themselves to see Meruem screwing Palm so that they wouldn't get fatally distracted if they happened to see that?
-
Really hoping this isn't the final arc
I don't see how it would after this. Zodiacs are recruiting the wrong people shouldn't there be people who are Hunters who have more experience. Makes it like the pro Hunters passed and everybody just joined recently. Kurapika and Leorio can't do anything it would be another struggle Arc like Gon and Killua with Chimera.

Togashi if you bring Gyro and/or Chrollo in good Lord. I'm hyperventilating just thinking about .
-
I think Kite told Gon and Killua they would be 'leveling up' when the CA arc began. I think many people disagree with me and I'm not saying I think they are power houses but I do believe Leorio has done some off-screen training since the end of the Yorkshin arc. I also think Kurapica has become a proficient fighter beyond fighting just the spiders (though of course, the spiders allow him to fight on a much higher level thanks to his nen restrictions). I would like to see Leorio and Kurapica get the chance to both level up more during this arc and eventually get a shot of the 4 main characters reunited and drastically stronger from when they all first met at the beginning of the series.
-
Leorio was chosen for political reasons if I understood dog girl's words correctly. Due to the previous arc he has a certain presence within the HA which can be used to gain the other hunters' support for the expedition to the DC. I'm sure the group won't consist of the Zodiacs only but will also include hunters far more skilled than Leorio and Kurapika, making their tagging along secondary.
I btw doubt that Leorio did any significant Nen training. Med school aint that easy.

Yeah members of the hunter association have a really good impression of Leorio. With him on board for the Zodiac's DC mission they hope it will help the hunter association support the cause

Well Killua killed a lot of people before the start of the series and no one holds it against him.
The reason I find it cruel personally is because the ants won all the fights fair and square they outclassed the humans and in the end the humans have to go to underhanded tactics like poison and power up cheats to win while the ants slowly grew more honorable throughout the arc.
I thought it was messed how they went and always will. I'm just glad the head honcho got an honorable death and final scene however.

Yeah, honestly, fuck the ants. They're the most disgustingly and violently destructive villains in the most nihilistic arc in the series. Pity? Fuck them in their righteous ass.
Specially Pitou.
(ah, no, excuse me, I forgot they became so violent and mayhem-adoring zealots because they ate humans and that corrupted them. . .well, fuck them anyways.)

I do. All the time. It's one of the things that turn me off from this manga. The unnecessary grimness and nihilistic vibes present from day 1. When he killed those two bystanders cause "he needed to let out some steam" and gave off a sadistic look? At that time I thought "ok, this guy is definitely a rotten apple, sooner or later he'll be confronting Gon cause this is absolutely sick and twisted", but, what do you know? Gon fully embraces all his psycopathic tendencies! Maybe one day you'll wake up with your fucking trachea ripped off cause poor lil' cute electric eel boy needed to "let out some steam", but who cares? Grey Morality Seal of Approval and begone all implications of being a sick fuck!
And, again, the ants gaining a tiny bit higher morale ground doesn't hinder the fact that 1-they were planning a MASSIVE genocide, 2- they did some horrifyingly sadistic acts of torture during their lives (that shot of Pitou torturing Pokkle is top 5 sickening shit in this manga), 3- killed tons of little kids. . .them getting killed was fully called for, and no amounts of nuclear champagne will hide that fact. And 5000 cocoons still survived, so yeah, humans are somewhat not that fucking good at species genocide apparently. . .

When I was reading this page, I said to my brother, it has to be the little girl… hahaha I was right, after biscuit/piyon/(cheadle?) Togashi love to draw strong little innocent girls..Anyway this chapter imply that Pariston is not that strong, so what make him troublesome is his intelligence, I just like him more and more... On the other hand I still don't like Ging (he seems to me like the future mary sue of this series) the dude is strong and crafty as hell, hope togashi don't focus on him that much.
I would totally love a leorio/kurapika arc alone, that would be totally awesome, how time have passed since gon and killua has separated? a few days I think? I have a feeling we will not see them before this DC expedition is ending. this expedition will be a total failure, and once the arc is done the 4 protagonist will reunite again and go there together (with others ofc)

Apparently the ants are NOT responsible for their actions according to some people because it's in their nature to be murdering, awful scumbags because of evil genes. Never mind the fact that they are clearly sentient beings that make their own decisions and are aware of the concept of morality and were shown many times to go against their natural instincts, nah, it's our fault because EVIL is coded in DNA apparently.

I personally don't hold Killua or the Ants past against them. The past is this past I care about them in their current state.
But since we're back to overanalyzing and calling the characters sociopaths when the people in Jojo do the same thing and everyone loves them I have nothing to say. There was a lady in Jojo who killed an entire town and her death was so tragic everyone was still like " Oh man I can't believe she went like that!" Even In Universe.
Here we'd have a 5 page debate on the mental states of the characters.
Why can't we have a fandom like that?

All's fair in love and war.
If this happened in real life, I'm sure you'd be less inclined to care about honor and fairness.

Because many regulars in this thread begrudge HXH
-
I do.

I say what I do as a fan of the series. You have said yourself several times in this thread you continue to post in as a regular despite your opinion that you aren't. Killua and Gon are two of my favorite Shonen Protagonist ever and that won't ever change.
And that's the thing about it. Its fiction. It won't happen. It allows me to hold a different opinion than if it really happened.
What happened to the old TV Tropes about Heel Face Tern and Redemption? Is that Non Existent in the HXH fandom?
Alex that explains so much…

I personally don't hold Killua or the Ants past against them. The past is this past I care about them in their current state.
I don't know if it's really in the past? Though if it's supposed to be in the past (Killua), it's ok. But, again, it doesn't seem like it's in the past at all?
The ants? Nope, sorry. Again, their plan was to murder thousands of people. It's not their past, at that time, it was their freaking future that was worrying!

Ok, sorry, I honestly don't remember who you're talking about. I'm quite sure I've read all of Jojo, and I don't remember that mass murdering lady? Unless (spoilers for the anime only people to avoid):
! Are you talking about Enya? She's the evilest bitch ever, I don't think anyone in the fandom cried her death? Which, btw, I don't think was. . .tragic? More like, sudden. And the in-universe comments might be regarding the fact she's an old lady that wasn't defending herself at that time, not out of pity for a super horribly evil bitch. And she was a villain, not the co-protagonist.
Sorry, I love Jojo, and most of the protagonists are usually fine people. My favorite Jojo, Joseph, acts like a cocky brat and stuff, but he's a nice fella, and quite selfless in times of extreme need. I don't remember a psycopathic protagonist in Jojo, except maybe some of the Passione gang, and they were more douchebags than straight up psychos.
Also, there, usually, when someone is super fucked up, he/she's called up on that! Here it's like, Killua is fucked in the head. Deal with it. No one asks, no one gives it a second thought, no one worries.
And I'll stop cause it'll seem like I'm hating on this series too much. But understand that this might prove hard to swallow to some people. And I don't even hate Killua or anything, he's a nice character.
Edit: oh, yeah, totally forgot about Narciso Annasui. He was kinda super creepy and no-one called him on that (he was a fucked up murderer to booth). . .
-
Going along with what Fuka and others have said about the ants becoming sympathetic characters despite their previous evil actions, that is one thing I really like about this arc. It reminds me of some of the characters from the Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones series. Like Jaime Lannister. I hated him in the beginning. I felt he was selfish and generally did evil things. As time goes on, even with some of his deplorable acts of the past, he has changed to a degree and has become more empathetic, and my favorite character of that story
I think the transformation of the ants' values and making their end a bittersweet event is one of the strengths of the Chimera Ant arc. Definitely my favorite arc in the series
-
also Jojo is pants-on-head dumb as fuck retardation and knows it
whereas HXH guns for all this hamfisted philosophical cheese that sorts of indicates that the author intends for us to take what he is talking about seriouslyi really couldn't give less of a shit about the main characters being murderers in a story about a bunch of beautiful Adonis' prancing around on screen taunting each other with their magic genies as they traverse some bizarre and stupid plotline
if Hunter X Hunter involved more Hisoka dancing around and smacking little 12 year old tanktop bellies as opposed to "Man… man knows no extent to his cruelty... 00:0030 Knuckle took three steps forward, but only then did he realize the sheer extent of the situation. For a brief second -no, not even that... could this realization be said to be restricted by the concept of time? did this not purport eternity?- Knuckle envisioned the palace. Switch back to Palm: To think we could drink alcohol... and also kill people? Do we know no limit!!!" I would really give less of a shit whether the ants killed dudesthe only Ant I can forgive to some extent is Pufu because he was always engaged in some elaborate occasionally homoerotic waltz as he thought about his beloved Cell benefactor

Kind of of topic from this post, but I've always thought Kurapika has been a proficient fighter, but yeah, now he is probably even better.
Emperor Time is pretty nice nen ability, Kurapika did well by making it so the only skill he couldn't use on non spiders was chain jail.

This is the single best graphic definition of Jojo ever.
And your first statement is also true.
. HxH is a (supposedly) serious and intellectually stimulating manga (for teens). They're two different kind of monsters. So many people here hold HXH to values and levels of criticism they give other shonen blatant passes on.
Not really. Fairy Tail, Bleach and Naruto get massacred on a weekly basis. Toriko and Magi are praised when needed, and openly (and extendedly) critizised when the opposite happens.
One Piece is getting increased flack since the timeskip started, and many posters are not holding any punches when critisizing current OP and current Oda.
Even current Jojo is met with coldness instead of the enthusiasm of Part 7.
Only eminently shonen manga I can see mostly praised on a weekly basis is Seven Deadly Sins, and, again, it's a different monster altogether than HxH. If it started using heavy narration, heavy philosophical introspection, heavy political exposition dumps. . .then people would obviously radically change the way we rate it cause it would mean the manga would've shifted from "pure entertaining and fun battle manga" to "deep psychological and philosophical manga with heavy nihilistic tonal vibes and the occasional fight". The latter deserves a different measuring pole than the first.
And, honestly, even when all is said and done. . .in the end mostly everyone on the board likes HxH to an extend, with quite a lot of users puting it above One Piece. The occasional criticism is actually quite a healthy exercise.
-
So many people here hold HXH to values and levels of criticism they give other shonen blatant passes on.
I think it bothers a lot of manga readers that Togashi never walked away from HXH. Every volume and arc that passes cements HXH as one of the best shonen series out there. It has out lasted the rise and fall of Naruto and Bleach's opportunities at being something great. It's as ambitious in scope as OP is and a much more concise product (waaaaay too many chapters of silly dialogue and running around in circles hurts the pacing of every OP arc). HXH is really something special and I believe that bothers a lot of people for whatever reason
The success of HXH should be championed. Not envied

She's the one. I didn't want to say it by name because of anime spoilers but yes. And in the manga they were angry that the person who did her in was asking for mercy and one even says "The time for mercy was when you could have given –-- it". She held loyalty onto her employer to the very end even when it was shown he felt none at all for her.
I've seen a lot of posts on different forums about that scene and the majority of people actually felt sympathy for her during that scene. Sentiments I actually agree with.
They also don't complain that the main characters in Jojo actually kill the majority of their enemies. They brush it off as "It happens". I just wish we had a fandom like that.
Meruem's plan had shifted to making a world where everyone was on an equal level of power and pride. He no longer wanted to be a King he just wanted to make a perfect world. He acknowledge he'd have to do some terrible things to make it happen but to him the ends justified the means.
And alright sorry I just get kind of debatey when someone says that the characters as sociopaths when nothing they've done has ever led me to believe that. One of the first actions they did in the series was save a guy from falling off a ship during a storm and it instantly gave me an emotional attachment to all the leads. I just can't see them being sociopaths.
I know the series has flaws but the characters morality isn't one to me.
-
We've got the Stockholm syndrome going on here, but it's not surprising.
Anyway, I was very shocked about the robotic girl being the strongest in the group. If Ging is stronger than Pariston, why doesn't he just kill him and end it? Don't tell me that Ging doesn't kill because we're talking about HxH here. A man of his stature wouldn't give 2 f4cks about morals.
I feel as though the series is almost coming to an end though. After Kurapika gets the eyes and dies together with the Spiders, his objective would be complete. Also, if Leorio gets his Doctors degree after finishing DC, then he'll disappear as well.
People are sleeping on Kite though, because he's was a disciple of Ging and is twin-sibling of Meruem with his/her memory intact. I believe that Kite will take over Killua's position and give a different perspective of Gon's journey.
-

I know the series has flaws but the characters morality isn't one to me.
Sums up this entire piss-poor argument .

for what it's worth HXH was my favorite shonen from like 2002-2008
I've probably said this before, but I sort of respect the Chimera Ant arc. I can't really say I've read a Jump series that's tried to do what it did, and I don't think what Togashi was attempting was a particularly easy route. That said, it's hard to appreciate it within the context of the arc. It's really flawed (and it also is really good: see Knuckle [best character in the series as far as I'm concerned], Morel, Netero, Palm, Komugi & Meruem's relationship, Melereon).also it's really not fair to compare HXH and One Piece because they're two totally different products, just like HXH and Jojo.
Silly dialogue and a light-hearted atmosphere is one of the central tenets of OP.
At the end of the day, HXH is cool but it has yet to produce anything as great as Skypeia or Water 7 or anyone as cool as Luffy or Franky. -

I don't see why you always have to be so aggressive in your posts but instead let me say the characters moralities isn't a problem whatsoever then.

Not envied

The growing relationship between the King and this girl through the ever complex game they played. It wasn't any of the fights or "awesome" characters that showed up. It was that relationship and how they affected each other. I read it all in one go so nothing was slow for me either.

An advocate for games featuring raped women with bombs needing to be removed from their genitalia is giving a lecture on moral themes in story telling. Someone ban this idiot

To say something nice for a change, Yorkshin is a really fantastic arc.
And, surprisingly? I think the Chimera Ant arc is my second favorite, but mostly because it was a battle orgy, and it was really effective in its darkest moments (I couldn't believe the cruelty of the Kite-puppet moment. That was sadistic on Togashi's part times 10). In fact, on my first read, I remember being all "holy shit!" at adult Gon's transformation and fight, even if only for the fact that Togashi started experimenting with the art and did some amazing stuff in there.
Of course, the extreme narration, super confusing focus on ¿octopus vs. lobster? and ¿octopus vs. wolf?, anticlimax and rebirthes kind of take some of its value away from it, but from what it's worth? yeah, it's definitely among the most comendable stuff Togashi has ever done. Even if I hate the royal guard, the fight against Youpi is the most physically exhausting fight I've ever read on a manga. And I say this with admiration.
