I've never played one of these games before are they hard? I heard there is perma death, what happens if the main character dies?
General Fire Emblem Thread - At Least Mario Got a Funeral

-
The new FE games allow you to choose a "casual" mode where your characters don't die permanently, but classic FE is "Fuck, he died, now I've got to start all over."
-
I await the day a Fire Emblem game has an "How It's Actually Played" difficulty setting where the chapter restarts when someone dies.
Also recruit Cyril when you can, he's this game's Donnel and murders quick.
-
Cuz the actual intended experience is an in built nuzlocke. But what monster lets their units stay dead?
I have a war story. Golden deer. Mid game spoilers
! in one of the first few post timeskip missions, Ashe showed up.
! At first I tried to talk to him, but no option showed up, neither Claude nor Byleth could. Then as he was an Archer I just surrounded him, I tried to let him live.
! But then the battle conditions changed, one of the walls that kept him from moving was Claude, dragon rider Claude who I needed to move too protect a green unit.
! Checked the internet for any way to save Ashe, and it said defeat him. So I did, Byleth punched his chest in. And Ashe died. And I had to stop for like 2 hours. -
Started playing today. Only managed to get the first impressions since I had to stop on the first "free day" after picking your house.
So far so good. Much to my surprise, based on the first impression I actually liked Dimitri more than Claude. Still went with the Golden Deer because none of the three houses seemed to have a definitely better roster, so I went with the one that better fits my anti-monarchy disposition.
For now I just worry the battles will be too scattered and most of the time I will be focusing on socialization, but I am not that worried. For now the game is keeping me optimistic about it.

The nation owned by nobles and merchants sounded like the obviously better choice, huh :V
-
Better than inbreed kings and emperors.

15 hours in now and the game absolutely grabbed me. It's really really fun and i love the characters.
My only complaint right now is that it is a bit easy but that may change later. I'm playing normal/classic tho. Probably going to play on hard on my next playthrough. -
Hm… I went with Normal/Classic, too. Maybe I should change it while I'm just 2 hours in and pretty much everything I did so far I could redo in less than 20 minutes.
I'm not exactly a masochist, but I went with that difficulty on SoV as well and found it too easy. -
I guess it depends on what level they are and i also already have all the intermediate classes. But most of the time my characters stomp everyone. F. e. Felix got attacked 3 times in a row and he one-shotted all of them while evading 2 of their attacks.
But like i said, maybe it will change later.Oh and there is even the rewind feature which i did not have to use yet.
Edit: Of course right after i wrote that i had to use the rewind two times …
-
I’m playing hard/classic and have definitely had some dammit, restart moments already. I like the divine pulse because that’s come in real handy for avoiding hour long fight replays in some situations. Especially when I can’t tell quite how hard an enemy will hit me after moving the first character into their danger zone.
Also helps in redoing shitty level ups haha
-
Protip: if your Byleth is a girl, you can nab Sylvain for your house without buttering him up.
-
looks up Sylvain Eeeeexcellent.
-
Why is the Gatekeeper so popular?
-
Because he's a cinnamon roll. Have you been speaking with him? His voice work and what he actually says is great. Also is the only generic npc that isn't a vendor or a game mechanic that stays in one place. Next in line is Dorte the horse.
-
It's also funny that he has Alm's VA.
-
God damn, this game is so overwhelming with all the mechanics and options. First class I stood there looking at the lecture screen for a couple of minutes going from one student to another having no idea what to teach and to whom. Then Ignatz came to me with his personal problems looking for some counseling and, damn, what do I tell this kid, every option seems the right one!
Whoever decided Byleth would be a mercenary with zero teaching experience before being thrown into this is definitely a genius, I can totally feel close to her whenever I think "I miss the old times when I only needed to worry about not dying".
-
So hear me out. What if in Lunatic Mode….
! The Death Knight is able to move around in chapter 4.
-
I just learned that missing items spawn where their owner was standing the previous month (except for I think Bernie's stuff, which always is just outside her door.)
-
There is a month where Bernadetta leaves her room.

Micaiah's Stand ability is failing at committing war crimes.

it's not her fault those pegasus riders are so good at avoiding the deep fryer
-
Now I need to see a fanart of Micaiah approaching Berkut.
-
Hey lets make wyverns riders almost as fast pegasus knights but still hit hard as hell.

As always, the best way to farm supports is not with food, practical work or singing, but with hard grinding battles. But now I have like 60 support conversations queued up to see.
-
Well after 70 hours, I finally managed to beat the Golden Deer path in my role of scholar, matchmaker, and tactician. I'll take some time collecting my overall thoughts, but it leans more into the positive and this might be my favorite in the series.
-
Okaaaayyy, who is the creepy bitch who showed up in Heroes? I assume a villain that shows up later in 3Houses?

Kronya? Yeah. She appeared in some trailers.

holy crap.
this is my first Fire Emblem game ever and i just lost half of my students on one of the first missions on classic mode. Should i start a new game in cassual to learn the basics or will i be fine with a halfed class? -

Should i start a new game in cassual to learn the basics or will i be fine with a halfed class? To change Classic->Casual you need to restart, but if you don't want to start it all over you can at least change the difficulty from Hard to Normal on the Options menu (you can't change it back once you went to Normal, though). As for the units you lost, you can always recruit new students to fill their spots, I suppose.
Btw, if I can point out one negative aspect about this game so far (I'm on September of the first year) is how non-existent the other houses are. Sure I wasn't expecting the minor characters to have major roles, but at least I thought the other house leaders would constantly appear on cutscenes interacting with you. Still, so far I only saw Edelgard in one cutscene after I chose my house. Dimitri not even once.
-
Started 3H. I was originally planning on starting with Black Eagles since it seemed like the "main" path and then working on the other routes… but then I realized that even though I'm confident that I'm going to really like it, I'm not sure if I'm going to LOVE it enough to essentially replay a 50+ hour game multiple times. So I decided to go with Golden Deer since Claude is the the character I feel like I've spoiled myself the least on.
So far it's really good though, even though I'm still super early.
-
I've started my blue playthrough but yesterday was a busy day so I'm back to doing errands and hunting bandits.
Also, I realized that this persona bullshit is not the best way to farm supports, but just do the classic of "let them stand beside each other in battle and get hit in the face over and over and over again."
-
Alright thanks for the tips. I feel fine about starting a new game, ive only been playing it for a day.
Gotta sharpen my brain… one fine day... imma make it through classic! -

Yeah, obviously they had to put an "idle detector" or whatever in the battles, so the old strategy of leaving a single enemy on a healing tile and let him hit you forever doesn't really work here as the enemy will eventually flee (I don't know what happens if you let them, though. Once the message appears you can still take the enemy down before you finish your turn and I always rushed to do that. I don't know if you fail the mission or just misses that killing if the enemy successfully flees).
I did realize, though, that as long as there are reinforcements waiting to enter the battle, that "detector" will not be triggered. Dorothea's paralogue was particularly good for that grinding since there is an enemy that will keep spawning reinforcements as long as he is alive. Pair that with the fact Combat Arts like Swap/Draw Back/Reposition build up supports and you can grind those without even engaging in fights.
-
Ebay claimed my game should be here by now, but I'm not seeing it anywhere, either at home or the post office.
FUCK!
-
Second half spoiler:
! Why did you make me kill Bernadetta, game?? What did she ever do to anyone (except for maybe kill a bunch of soldiers …).
It's made even worse by her last words "why can't i at least die in my room instead of a stupid battlefield?"
What the hell man. Guess i'll have to play the Eagles in the next playthrough ...I also didn't manage to recruit a single person from another house because i didn't realise i had to build up their support level …
-
Bummer rant.
It's been almost two days since I last played the game. Not that I am lacking the free time, it's just I keep pushing it back… I suppose at some point all the academy activities that seemed precisely the exciting features started feeling like tedious chores.
Last save was while I was exploring the monastery on October of the first year, because I really wasn't feeling that excited about spending my activity points to hear the characters repeating the same lines over the dining table or during the chanting practice, or to get faculty trainings so I could improve skills I don't intend to ever use just to raise the chances of recruiting Student C. Also the simple idea of exploring the whole monastery every month for shining blue spots got old reeeally fast.
With the exception of the Staff personnel, so far I only managed to recruit Sylvain (comes for free with femByleth), Dorothea (only character outside my house I was legit interested in to invest on her recruitment) and Ashe (I wrongly thought he would have a personality fitting the thief archetype. He is more on the paladin side of the spectrum). While I want to recruit Caspar and Petra, I am just not feeling like going through all the effort required to convince them to join my side while the characters I already have seem good enough - missing the times when you just needed to have your lord use "talk" to recruit a new unit.
Also, while 90% of the Support Conversations I unlocked are C-level, so supposedly the most shallow ones, I don't think I have seen one single interesting conversation so far. Ignatz aside, the game easily made all the Golden Deer students to fall on my good graces, but at the same time I can't say I am that interested in any them (I love Marianne, but more for particular reasons than because the game succeeded in doing so).To make things worse, I was under the impression the academy days would amount only to the pre-timeskip part of the game, but I saw some screenshots that suggest I was wrong.
(the main reason of this rant is because I usually feel less negative towards something after I vent it out)
-
Ignore your own class in hearts options, abuse the adjuctant plus the "recruited for the month" systems, and farm the battles, go tall not wide on supports.
-
So i surrendered and got the switch for this game.
And chose Black eagles.
Without spoiling me, uhh ill need to do a second playthrough because i chose black eagles? -

Blue Lions run, kinda-halfway point spoilers:
! I just realized that blue lions is probably the route of less bloodsheed, as Dimitri and Dedue don't die, you can recruit almost all characters, except Claude, Eldegard and Hughbert, and you probably get to forgive Claude.
! I also realized that the new game plus store lets me buy love with renown, a little too late, should have bougth them just after getting them to C or B, as that is what let me get the 5 other ones that I was missing. Just need to grind a little more armor for Ferd.Damnit muscle memory, I'm losing the ability to ctrl c-ctrl v in windows because I have a mac at work. This is annoying.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
I kinda regret getting dancers and never using the class. I'll change that this run.
-
Well, I just goofed. For the Horsebow Moon (the month where Flayn is kidnapped), I misread the message that leads me to the month's battle. I thought it said it would just end progress for that day rather than the entire month. So yeah, I just cost myself a whole month of stat and support building. Argh!
EDIT: Alright, so I still get stat bonuses, but still, I missed out on the rare monster battle and support building.
-
Fuck me. I dumbed out on the last recruiting month and that cost me Ferdinand, the only student I failed to recruit… I'm too used to Explore on the first week of each month, so I didn't consider the possibility of having a Seminar to raise my Hv. Armor, otherwise I would have recruited him easily. Obviously I only realized that after overwriting both my Save files (there isn't any option to restart the month, right? I suppose not).
I'm glad I restarted the game on Hard because at least this first year was really easy even with that. Even though I like to keep all my units trained and evenly leveled - instead of focusing on a few ones -, somehow my team always seems to be overleveled for the plot related missions (the Holy Tomb was embarrassing, with Sylvain one shotting the Flame Emperor).
The only battle I had trouble with so far was Ashe+Catherine paralogue (my units kept dying on me so I actually had to restart the fight because I ran out of Divine Pulses. I swear if you say "physical contact" loud enough, a Lysithea dies somewhere).Talking about the Flame Emperor, though... WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. I TOTALLY didn't saw that coming, good thing I wasn't following the reveals and discussions about the game closely. That and the color swap on the previous week completely caught me off guard and I am suddenly hyped again.
-
These characters take me in apreciation rollercoasters, Like how I started meh on Shamir and fanboying over Cath, but that changed when Shamir became the version of badass foreigner that I want to be, and Cath was just "for Rhea" over half of her supports. That happened with a few of the characters.
-
Well I'm currently halfway through Blue Lions after beating Black Eagles. Guess I can talk about the game.
I love it.
The teaching is a lot easier once you know how everyone's advantages work + managing motivation well, and it creates this circular loop about battling -> motivation -> learning -> battling. Lot of freedom. Lot of fun. There's a lot of fun things to do in the monastery, and in the first run I was talking to EVERYONE.
Then we get to the timeskip, and things get a LOT more intense.BL characters seem to have the most amount of dark chips on their shoulders, pretty harsh to get into some of their supports. Game only has ~30 characters, and some supports are capped at Bs, so overall there's a lot less work compared to the past few titles. Get more out of an average support that way, although getting a C support after skip is annoying since they act more like their post skip selves.
I lost a lot of units in the final BE map since it was rough and I ran out of pulses…..also you kinda get too many pulses lol.
Now to deal with punished Dimitri...
