Marriage is just s-rank supports. You can see a list of all supports a unit can have in the support area in game (including blacked out characters you don't have yet). ALso, avatar can support any character that isn't considered another avatar(which includes all dlc chars)

Hopefully that'll change once I encounter people like Tharja and Henry and really start focusing on reclassing.
It will. The Dark Mage/Sorcerer and dark magic in general in this game is quite overpowered, especially the Nosferatu Tome.
-
If you care about the shipping shit as much as me, other than Chrom having to marry before Ch 12, please learn from my mistake and don't have anybody get married until maybe Ch 13 or so. I married Virion to Sully and thought it was pretty meh. And then when the perfect character for virion comes along AFTER THIS and I just regret everything. Cherche and Virion is just too perfect and I really hate that I went with Sully now…
Like, if it wasn't 11 hours in I'd just restart my game because I cannot explain what a terrible taste this left in my mouth. Just disgusting tasting. After spending so much time planning out marriages I get a shoddy one. I didn't even MEAN to save my file, I was just testing out S ranks to see what happened and somewhere along the lines Virion and Sully were still married when I reloaded. Woops...
In better news Henry is so great HE IS SO GREAT OH MY GOD
he's my favorite male character type in anime and JRPGs and he is the best I've seen in ages.
Same goes for Tharja as a girl.
Fuck, I can't decide if I want my two favorite characters to get married or if I want to nab Henry myself. I'm thinking for the main character, I'd rather have them marry one of those later game spoiler characters since they're kind of segregated to their own thing and I wouldn't be messing with any marriages with the main cast (and it sounds like those characters are generally better anyways and I'll want to use them).
-
Speaking of Dark Mages, there is a major pet peeve I have in that dark magic seems to be an accessory to anima magic instead of it's own category and also with their promotion to Dark Knight, shared along with the normal Mage. In gaining swords and a mount, they lose their ability of dark magic. I honestly think it should have been the Magic Knight with swords and anima magic for the regular Mage and the Dark Knight with axes and dark magic for the Dark Mage.
Just those minor things that could have been easily thought of.

Huh, noted, I was also rooting for the Virion and Sully ship, since I find both to be very solid characters with great interactions. I guess since I'm doing normal I'm focusing more on silly stuff like couples I find cute and cool with each other. Like I am eager about Donnel with Lissa simply because their personalities just bounce off each other. And then there's Miriam and Lon'qu.
Hadn't ever considered the whole stats and babies thing. Good to keep in mind, I guess I'll keep people at support rank A until I'm very sure.Except Chrom. He's mine.

Fucking blizzard, literally everywhere I go the game is sold out
This is what happens when you don't get 90% of the series localized, Nintendo
-
Henry is so inexplicably great
I mean shit one of his critical hit quotes is HAVE SOME… DEATH!!!
And the way he so gleefully tells the enemies "I'm gonna KILL you! <:)" His voice actor is just… so happy, it makes everything he says so much funnier.
In a world where everybody has these dramatic battle quotes Henry just rolls out to be a psychopathic goofball.
And the puns in his introduction scene jesus. Henry you are the best. Please marry me.
-
Many of the battle quotes are great. Anna's ''Violence is on sale today!'' never fails to crack me up.
It will. The Dark Mage/Sorcerer and dark magic in general in this game is quite overpowered, especially the Nosferatu Tome. Indeed. Now that I've gotten Tharja, Henry, and reclassed Lissa to Sage things have been going swimmingly for me in that department. A far cry from Mr. ''Don't-look-down-on-me-oh-is-that-an-axe-grk-dead'' Ricken.

I also found Henry to be a pretty good Barbarian, especially due to his skills. All you need is an Arms Scroll or two to get him with a good Axe rank and away he goes!
-
Mariabelle is that character who while having decent growths doesn't get great stats isn't she? Like Lissa could easily reclass and outdo her.
At least the game doesn't throw awful units at you one after another like 6.
-
I went through and did all the kid paralogues, and once I was finished I suddenly realized that doing them all had made me vastly overpowered. I have about 7 other characters (4 kids, 2 manaketes, and a Gaius) who seem like they could stand toe to toe with Donnel the Almighty at this point. Severa, for example, is critting at about a 50% rate and hitting for about 140 with it. I'm pretty sure the max health for one unit is 80 (making her skill that hits 5 times entirely pointless, because she never fails to kill what she attacks, ever). She also has high def/res/hp, conveniently, along with galeforce so she can kill two things every turn. Basically the same story with Cynthia, except that I made her a bow knight instead of a swordmaster.
And so, I've given up on random battles and such, and I'm just going straight to the end. I wish I could up the difficulty to hard midway, because I could probably finish the game by autofighting the entire thing at this point. I just need to wrap up this playthrough and put a bow on it, and then I can restart on a real difficulty setting.
The strangest thing is, despite having used them for mostly the entire game, Chrom and my main character really aren't that tough. Neither one may even be in my top 10 units, and they're both at risk of dying if I carelessly toss them out into the chaos like I can do with so many others. Their kids could kick their asses, sadly.

Tharja will
! make her husband's life a living hell. I'd personally choose the guy you hate the most to pair with her and watch him suffer. As for the late game spoiler characters…
! most of them can't get married to anyone other than your main guy/girl. Anna, Say'ri, Tiki, Basilio, and Flavia are all ineligible. I think Cherche is actually the last character you get that can have a kid (the kids can marry each other but won't have kids of their own). -

At least the game doesn't throw awful units at you one after another like 6.
It would seem that while Awakening's roster is a lot smaller then Sword of Seals', their roster is more well-rounded with good stats and growths. Like in SOS, Oujay was pretty forgettable as a Mercenary thanks to Dieck the same way Wendy was as a Armor Knight to Bors.
-
Given that you can reclass as many times as you want to gain more stats(and you can "reclass" to the exact same one you were using before (Although to do this in a promoted class you need to be at least level 10), It's totally possible to max the stats for each and every unit, so any character can be amazing if you put enough time and effort into it.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
So, out of curiousity: Has anyone else played around with forging? I did on my first playthrough (on hard), and the effects can be pretty amazing. Although it's kind of balanced by the fact that in later chapters in hard mode, the enemies start using forged weapons themselves.
-
Yes, any character can be amazing in the end. But by that point it hardly matters. It's getting there that matters. The characters that can get there amazingly are the ones I consider amazing. Some characters can be a struggle, or shackled to a list of classes I'm not looking for. But worse is the characters that get low percentages on the RNG level ups, or characters that struggle to earn xp (certain classes with low stats especially).
To that point, some of the children I've made are ridiculously amazing. In one day of use two of them not only passed my main characters, but they could totally destroy them now. I have very few stats actually capped on anybody yet.
I'd be playing with forged weapons if the mobs were harder. I have plenty of cash to spend but I don't need it. I wish normal mode scaled a bit more, but I guess it's designed for people who don't want to do many paralogues.
-
When you can take the first chapter crutch character and make him amazing, that's when you know you can make anyone good. It's like they took the MU from 12 and make a whole army of them.
-
So far, here's the pairing I've made, just for fun!
Melanie (My avatar) is married to Gregor
Sully is married to Chrom
Panne is married to Libra
Nowi is married to Virion
Tharja is married to Lon'qu
and I'm trying to marry Morgan to Lucina. And I didn't expected my real name to be so fitting with my avatar… Melanie is my real name and the meaning is something like "The dark one" in greek. I won't spoiler or anything but the ones who are near the end of the game will understand why it's so fitting...
-
Can I enjoy this game with absolutely no interest in this whole shipping and marriage business? The gameplay looks interesting.
-
Yeah, but there is a gameplay element to the shipping and marriage: It unlocks extra levels with new characters, plus supports in general grant bonuses when units are paired or near each other, and marriage supports are the highest level. That said, you could always play supports for their tactical value alone
-
Just started this game. It really is refreshing to create your own character. Although now of course I'm wondering if I want to start over and change her appearance.
The old groove is starting to come back too. I can feel all the experience of Sacred Stones welling up . . .
-
Switched my money I had down on Luigi and downloaded the game.
So far so good, I do like the pairing aspect of the fighting…
-
anyone know what like Ike or other DLC characters look like in game?
I mean like when you get their DLC and earn them recruit wise. Cause Marth looks sweet, but the others in this first DLC look like pretty generic characters. I assume they have a nice good skin when you get the DLC that they are recruitable in.
-
With the exception of Marth, I'm pretty sure that the battle models of all dlc characters are created via the typical avatar customization. I think the portraits are a bit different though
-

Dang, so they are basically whatever class they are plus their hair style is somewhat like the characters.
So Ike will be a blue haired "hero" unit?
Elincia would be a green haired "pegasus" unitAnd so on?
You would think in a $2.50 DLC, they could go about in giving the character you get in that package their own skin.
-
Holy shit Tharja is amazing, both her dark attitude and in combat, she's like destroying everything. Her supports are great w/ my Avatar and it seems the game is pushing for them to be together so I'll probably go down that road. Its a shame though because I hate my avatar and his annoying fawning of Chrom. For the first time playing a FE game the lords (if you count the avi) are actually not significantly better than everyone else and maybe I'm getting RNG screwed but both of mine are actually a lot worse. Donnel, Sumia, Lon'qu, Lissa, and Nowi are all much better than them now.
Side note: I regret marrying off Donnel and Sully, the supports are good but Sully is pretty terrible even as she is the same level as everyone else. She is dragging Donnel down…
Plot has gotten better but I thought it ironic and hilarious that
! After the Exalt commits suicide to prevent war and violence, Chrom's like LETS KILL THAT MAD KING ASSHOLE AND RIP APART HIS ARMY in the next chapter. Understandable response but still, pretty funny.
-
I've realized that maybe I'm not cut out for hard mode…at least not for my first time playing a Fire Emblem game...but dammit, I'll make it work!
-
I may own the last copy of this game on Long Island now loll
-
I just noticed the existence of the SpotPass teams, and good lord, many of them are crazy-strong. I'm definitely nowhere near ready to take most of them on.
-
All kneel before the glory of Flavia Khan, i mean holy shit
-
On Chapter 17, I can't believe I'm making progress in the game. Still kind of overleveled a bit for the story and I don't mind.
I'm almost strong enough that I can possibly start taking on the paralogues (since Paralogues 5-etc are reserved for Those Characters and it takes a difficulty spike). I've done 5 to get
! Owain, who is incredible
And I'll get 6 after this I think.
But god, I love how chuunibyou he is. His supports are making me laugh way too hard.
-
I finished blasting my way through normal mode last night, and I have to admit that the last fight was moderately challenging. It's very difficult to protect any characters who might be a bit more vulnerable.
I started up on hard mode, and I'm glad that I didn't put more effort into my normal mode run. Hard mode is significantly more challenging and satisfying. I even wound up resorting to using Frederick to protect Donnel in paralogue 1. I want to change everything up as far as pairings and all that go, but I'm also going to be careful to still try and make the kids awesome. I really still haven't decided on any actual pairings or anything yet, though. I find myself being more concerned with actually winning the battles for now. And Donnel being in his embryo state doesn't make things any easier.
I really love the gameplay of this game, but there are some parts of the plot I'm a little shakey on…
! especially a lot of the stuff surrounding Lucina. Like before Emmeryn dies, she wants to make as little of an impact on the past as possible. So she… joins the khan tournament to fight against her dad? What? She also mentions that her dad trained her, despite the fact that he died when she was like 2 or something. It just felt like there were some various inconsistencies surrounding the whole time travel aspect. But it makes the gameplay fun, so I can forgive all that.
! Fun fact: Lucina and Owain can get married to each other, despite the fact that they're cousins. I suppose royalty live by a different set of rules. -

Granted, it was only possible because of a few key choices I had made earlier. Plus I had aimed to end it early to prevent lives lost
-
So basically pairing Sully and
VirionEdgeworth up is the best thing everI have Marth ( the real one) being Donnel's bodyguard, which helps mitigate how near-impossible it is to get him a kill
-
First spotpass chapter (paralogue 18) is up and you can try it if you have finished chapter 25!
! You can recruit Mad/Foolish King Gandrel as he apparentely survived and you can even support him (and marry him if your avatar is female) and seriously… This guy is awesome! I'm happy that I'm currently on my second playthrough and not married to anyone yet 'cause I really wanna marry him. Also, I'm gonna try to get as many different supports and all the recruitables characters since I have unlocked the support log...

This post is deleted!

I've been burning through lunatic mode, classic, and it took me a few hours but I finally came up with the perfect way to DLC grind, all of my characters (Chapter 5 as of right now, including donnel) are maxed level and still having trouble going though. My characters dish the damage but they can't take the hits.
But I'm planning on 100%ing this file. All supports, all characters alive, maxed stats, everything. I'm not sure I want to do lunatic+ considering it's really RNG abusive.
-
Beat my second playthrough. THis time I actually managed to finish the final fight in a single turn
-
I'm kind of excited by how I'm … I'm gonna beat this. I'm on Chapter 19, I'm really nearing the end. For the first time in I don't know how long, I got an RPG and played it a good amount every day and beat it within an incredibly reasonable time without ever having put it down for some other game.
Am I finally exercising responsibility with prolonged exposure to a game??? 22 hours and still going strong. I'm really happy. But also really happy with just how fun this game has been.
It'll be a few more days until I go and beat chapter 19 and play onwards and finish up the game, though, given I hit the point where all of Those Characters' paralogues opened up. I've gotten Owain, Inigo and just now, Brady and I really like them all. I'm on to Kjella's now, plan to do them in their numbered chronological order.
I still have yet to marry. I can't decide if I want Henry's perfect self for me, or if I want Tharja and Henry to be together because it's a great pairing. If not Henry, who for me? I considered Libra, but he feels like a consolation prize. I don't know. I could give Libra to Tharja since that felt pretty okay as a pairing and not feel bad.
-
The new DLC is so broken. You can make 100k a frekin run. Not only that but granted the units are strong (level 50+, so pretty much two reclasses and 10 levels) but they don't attack. They retaliate so you have to be careful but their goal is to run. My suggestion though, as soon as you reclass someone, (level 20) go right to the third DLC and have him solo the map. Save for flying units/specific to short/long range. You gain about 4 levels per run lol
-
EVerything after chapter 9 is so depressing man
but hey Lon'qu and the Avatar just got hitched so it's not all bad
-
I've reclassed Olivia as a Myrmidon and suddenly she's turned into a dodge-tank that can go toe-to-toe with even promoted units. I appear to have made the correct decision.
-
The offbeat decision to marry Chrom to Olivia turned out far more complicated than I had imagined. I had to beat chapter 11 multiple times to figure out what else I needed to do different. I think the annoyance will be worth it in the end, though. Olivia just seems to provide the best class options for him, and the thought of Inigo as a prince just kills me.

Hitch list:
Chrom/Sumia (the 'generic' choice)
Lon'qu/Avatar
Frederick/Tharja
Donnel/Lissa
Virion/SullyGonna see if I can get Libra and Henry together.

I'm not gonna bother reclassing (cept Donnel, my Mercenary god) until my second playthrough, when I have a better grasp of the game

My pairings alternate between couples that generally go good together and couples that make no sense whatsoever for the laughs. Like Vaike/Tharja.
Though Noire with Warrior growths is really good.
-
Second playthrough couples time! This time, I got all the kids. Just so you know, I play on Normal/Casual 'cause I don't like games to be tough. That's why I've gone through 2 playthroughs in a week.
Sumia/Chrom: Sweet but cliché. I like that!
Lissa/Lon'qu: Surprisingly good.
Sully/Stahl: They make a great couple, actually…
Miriel/Libra: I dunno, I just like it. And Laurent look like the lovechild of Harry Potter and Drago Malefoy but with Hermione's personality!
Maribelle/Vaike: Brady look awfully like Vaike for a character that is linked to the mom.
Olivia/Gaius: Same as before, Inigo look a little bit too much like Gaius to be linked to his mom.
Panne/Virion: Just because Yarne look cute with a blue stripe in his hair...
Cordelia/Frederick: I just liked the idea...
Tharja/Gregor: It was an accident... But I decided to let it like that anyway... Poor Gregor...
Nowi/Henry: Kinda cute actually...
Cherche/Kellam: I thought it was funny that she fell in love with his armor at first. And dark brown hair look good on Gerome
Mel (my avatar)/! Gandrel: Told ya I wanted to marry him! He's funny and can be surprisingly charming. His interactions with Morgan are quite nice too. Somehow, marrying him gave Morgan a nice grape-purple hair color!

I did sully/stahl on my first playthrough and liked it a lot as well. Also, not sure I see the point of doing a second playthrough on normal casual immediately after a first. I've completed two playthruoghs as well, but both were on hard classic, with my second being the one where I recruited all kids and let nobody die, whereas the first I had quite a few characters face permadeath

Why
Now who am i going to make the Mortecia to Henry's Gomez?

It's specifically brought up when you recruit him. Chrom thinks he's a woman and Libra has to correct him in an awkward moment

The introduction between him and Chrom is Chrom mistaking him for a girl and being corrected.

I massively misread his intro (honestly I hardly noticed him to begin with) apparently
