That's literally the whole point of what Aohige's trying to say. The focus of the story is that Souma is (once again) fighting someone's incredibly sophisticated dish bby doing something flashy with something incredibly basic but with his own spin.

#65 Bento evolution! Alice[That said, if your bento doesn't satisfy in presentation or originality it won't do any good against my temari bento]
Soma[Yours did certainly look super delicious, let me have a taste of it this time.]
Alice[Hehehe, with pleasure♪]
Soma[…I have to wonder though, if your dish does properly showcase the deliciousness of bento?]
Alice[…...What's that supposed to mean...?]
! Soma's flashback, back when he was in elementary 4th grade.
He's delivering a bento to a granny in the neighborhood.
As she turns over the nori we see her and Soma's face smiling as she begins to tear up.
Back to the present, the chapter ends with the judges turning the nori over.
! Alice[…Yukihira-kun, what's this nori bento?]
Soma[Heh? You don't know? Should I make you some afterwards?]
Soma[That said it's not your usual nori bento]
Alice[?]
Soma[Yukihira style from the series of evolved dishes: nori bento! Please dig in!]
! Judge[How could this dish that could only be considered B-class gourmet wise have this refined taste?]
Alice[…...?]
Judge[What could this be?]
Senzaemon[The answer to that… is most likely "dashi".]
Senzaemon[This dashi is based on "magurobushi"!] (TN shaved smoked tuna?)
Spectator[Magurobushi?! Not Katsuobushi?] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katsuobushi
Soma[Exactly! The magurobushi and rishirikombu(type of kelp) are extracted from the cod boiled dashi]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cod
! Flashback
guest at Yukihira[It seems like Soma-chan has become pretty attached to Kiyo-san.]
Jouichirou[Aah… that's cause she has always been playing with him.]
Jouichirou[Soma doesn't know his real grandmother]
Jouichirou[So he must have been yearning for something like it.]
! Soma[Mmmh? Granny isn't coming either today?]
guest at Yukihira[Right… seems like her hips have been giving in lately.]
guest at Yukihira[It's getting hard for her to walk all the way here.]
! Ringing
Kiyo[Coming! ouch]
Kiyo[Eh… Soma-chan!?]
Soma[You haven't had dinner yet, right? Here!]
! Judge[Let's see, what the main dish is.]
Judge[After all the most important part of a nori bentou is what's above the nori.]
Judge[If it carries the taste of soy sauce and mirin or if it's something simple like fried nori.]
Judge[It can even tell you the personality of the cook. Let's see, let's see… as expec....]
Judge[Ehhhh?!!]
Judge[What?? This… is this really a nori bento!?]
(Light is coming out of the bentou box) Pretty sure it's just a visual effect for the super literal. That's it for this week it's pretty out of order again I think. -
These cliffhangers are really killing me… also I want an early raw provider xD.
-
Thanks DA - man, I want to see the RAW so bad now.
-
Oh damn rechecking the translation slight mistake or rather left it way too unclear
! It's not actually Kiyo and Soma smiling but it's their faces drawn inside the bento.
-

! Amazing.
! Also the chapter was super adorbs
! As for the end of the chapter…
Souma: But wait! There's more! -
So who else thinks the judging will start off with all of the judges besides Nakiri grandpa being evenly split, and then he casts the final vote in Soma's favor? It just seems like it'd make sense and help further establish that he holds skills above all else
-
I was musing that possibility to myself as well while Alice was presenting.
Maybe we'll even get to see him strip a second time!
-
I bet he ends up taking off even more clothes this time. No pants = best food.
-
Chapter's out! Looks like Souma's aiming at the judges' heart strings as well as their taste buds..
-
Yeah, that's really plausible.
By the way, I totally prefer Soma's cooking style than Alice's molecular shenaningans; While, I admit it, Alice's cooking style is more peculiar and "innovative", I find it waaay unpractical for a "normal" kitchen. How much do you have to spend on cooking equipment to be able to make such dishes?
-
The little flashback made me feel all fuzzy and warm inside.
And hungry. Reaaaally hungry.
-
flashback was touching…
any spoiler picture of next chapter....?..it should be out..

There is one so far.

that old fart..i was expecting the director…
-
I could go for Souma's bentou now.
Liking how dandy the reactions this chapter have been, too. So upper class.

Practicality isn't the point of gourmet food, though. If we had the ability to cook high class dishes ourselves with ease, we would have no need for fancy restaurants.
-
I spent the entire chapter thinking: yeah, Souma isn't winning this one …. because of the lack of impact the dish had compared to Alice's. I liked the way every detail of the dish was explained and talked over, it built up a lot of tension. I really can't wait to see what Souma pulled off for next chapter.
Still, Alice being beaten this soon is going to make Souma's next victories in the tournie seem a little less impressive. -
I don't think so. People said something similar about how Soma needed to completely defeat Hayama, too, otherwise the victory would be shallow, but I think that's wrong. I really like how the series manages to keep the chef and the battlefield all in perspective. For Hayama, losing a curry battle would take away from his skill as a specialist. For Soma versus Alice, I think the concept of a bento is much more suited for Soma and the author recognizes that, hence the flashback and Soma's line to Alice about which makes a better bento. Soma specializes in making the qualities of seemingly conventional things shine, because he's used to cooking for regular people. Alice is losing because the terrain is better-suited for Soma.
Not only that, but I think there's a point to Alice losing, too, for her character arc. In the curry competition, they highlighted the lack of heart in her dishes, by punctuating her block with Megumi's dish. Now they've set up that Soma's dish has heart behind it, too. That will likely be the deciding factor and will force Alice to reflect and grow.
-

But practicality IS the point of a bento. Even if it's a gourmet bento, think of what purpose it still serves: lunch on the go for people who can't leave for a restaurant at midday.
Edit: which would lead me to agreeing with your above post, she uses all these high tech wizardry cooking machines, but lacks what is truly important for a bento: practicality and accessibility.

Souma going over is pretty clear to me
This is just like when Jan made knife cut noodles and lost in "Iron Wok Jan", since although he made the best dish, he didn't pay enough attention to the theme of the competition. It protected Jan, and will protect Alice because the loss is due to arrogance and not skill.

Who is this Jan guy?
-
The main character of Iron Wok Jan, an awesome cooking manga from the nineties.

Read the 7 chapters available online for Iron Wok Jan and I'm liking it a lot :) Anyone know where I could read the 25 volumes for the series?
-
I don't see how Soma could lose here, given that the buildup suggests the main opponent this arc is Eizan's subordinate, not Alice
-
^ Which is what we've been saying for the past few weeks. Not gonna happen.
-

Is Eizan's subordinate the mystery thug guy? He got a score of 91 in the prelims, which is a few lower than Alice.
@Wagomu: Not sure how I can disagree with that actually, great point.

From an English public library apparently…
-
Live in Birmingham (UK) and I've checked the library catalogue and it isn't available. Checked amazon and it's pretty damn expensive :(

Yeah, but I'd say that the score on the preliminary isn't really the most important thing. Eizan was built up as wanting to crush Soma in the tournament (Seemingly through this guy). It'd be dumb for Soma to just get beaten on his own and that plotline to be dropped
-

I entirely agree now that Souma isn't going to lose, I just don't think Eizan's subordinate is the big boss of the arc with a score like that unless he whips something surprising out. I see Souma vs. Megumi being a more likely final fight of the arc even (seriously, I really want this to happen)
-
I'm thinking Eizan's bitch has to do something drastic to have an "arc villain" feel to him, like brutally taking out Takumi or Megumi in the first round or something. Anyone make their brackets for this arc? Here's mine.
Souma versus Alice winner: Souma
Hayama versus Takumi/Megumi winner:Hayama
Aide versus Aide winner:Aide
Eizan's bitch versus Megumi/Takumi winner: Eizan's bitch
Semifinals
Souma versus Hayama winner: Souma
(hype match)Eizan's bitch versus Aide winner the bitch
finals
Souma wins
Could have Hayama as the final opponent if the author decides to build up Hayama more but I don't see that happening. The aides are too one dimensional to me for now to have relevance as Souma's opponent(s), not enough set up/investment by the author imo. Takumi could be a wild card/dark horse.
Heart warming chapter though. If this manga has a harem sub plot/genre thing, it's gonna be the first where I like the MC's character. -

Could have Eizan's lackey crush Hayama for moar dramas
Could happen but I'd rather have closure though. Hayama seems like an elevated Nikumi.
-
Soma doesn't need to defeat Hayama, though. How could that match have any excitement when Soma just about equalled Hayama on his own turf? Soma could fight Alice's aide in the next match it would still be more tense than Soma vs. Hayama MK. 2: this time, it's easier.
-
Tadokoro for final boss.
-
@Purple:
Tadokoro for final boss.
This! It seems ilogical and implausible, and somewhat anti-shonen, but would be so great!
-
Seeing as this thing's pretty much blasted any expectation I have out of the water, I'd say pretty much anything is on the table at this point.
Ping-pong battle final match?
-
You must make edible ping pong balls and serve it into the judges' mouths. Physically.
-
The best part will be seeing Megumi shifting between normal cooking and Tohoku Hopping Hare modes.
-
Screw the cooking, the new storyline is everyone is courting Megumi but only the person(! gender neutral) that defeats her at ping pong gets a chance to take her on a date.
My bets are on Hinako. -
Watch it be old man Senzaemon.
-
-
Ever since that trip, Tadokoro DOES seem to be becoming like the cherished idol of the series by the characters, doesn't she.
"That girl everyone loves".I would love to see Houjou and Hinako compete for Tadokoro in a yuri-fest bonus.
-
one twist i can think of is other four voting for Alice(for being a Nakiri, despite Souma's bento giving them more satisfaction),but Senzaemon choosing Souma..
in the end Alice withdrawing from the competition seeing it as her defeat..though i guess Souma will win straightforward…
-
Someone needs to ask on their official twitter about the chances of a Tadokoro table tennis prequel after Soma is over.
Or maybe we shouldn't. Maybe there's more Soma readers that are hardcore Megumi fans than anyone expected and the knowledge about it being possible will lead to intentional sabotage of the main series for it to happen sooner.:ninja: -
This post is deleted!
-
And so…
! Souma won this match with Alice.
