! "Me bouncy" seems like a really odd choice to be token rep of the franchise. They'd have to put her in one of the later, tamer less iconic costumes and remove her signature feature.
I mean, they threw in Bayonetta so anything's possible but that was basically a "Nintendo bought this license" deal more than her having actually earned a slot.
If we're talking actual reps then
! Haohmaru is basically the Ryu of Samurai SHowdown and he's iconic but he's ANOTHER sword user. Nakoruru has the bird summon thing so she could have a distinct moveset that would be interesting.
! Terry is Fatal Fury's most recognizable character aside from Mai's breasts. The hat and jacket are recognizable enough an dhis moveset would translate well to SMash.
! Kyo is the face of King of Fighters. So maybe him.
! Metal Slug rep makes sense because they're heavily projectile based which not a lot of character have been, and pretty much any of them would work. Like Dragon Quest you could throw four characters into the exact same slot and them all having the same moveset would be okay.
! No one knows what Ikari Warriors is but….
! If it IS to be a girl character then yeah, Mai is the most recognizable but I just have a hard time seeing her fitting.
! Hao has been in Soul Calibur and Mai has been in Dead or ALive, and I think Terry was in a crossover as well, so they're all crossover applicable. -

! Leak says new character is female but the most obvious choice is Terry Bogard… hmmm... I wonder how this conundrum could be solved....

Seriously, if this happens I guarantee you both models will be available, either as an alt costume or an echo, but considering Sakurai already confirmed the DLC characters were chosen by the Business side of Nintendo, it makes sense they'd do corporate synergy here and use Fem!Terry from SNK's most recent game available on the Nintendo eShop as the "main" version to represent them.
! Alternatively, Male Terry could be the primary but this could be why there was some confusion from the leaker. I think they said it was a translation issue? There could have been a line that said a male and female variant were both available and that's the line they flubbed?

I am both laughing and dreading.
The fact that there are more slots (and those born out of sheer pride of Sakurai to make this smash untouchable) might keep them tempered, he did talk about "more game worlds", meaning more franchises, but no numbers or criteria.
And no reason not to include Edelgard/finalFormGrookie. I'm over Rex tho. Could accept some adecuatelly priced echoes.

It seems like it was a part from Fatal Fury, another from King of Figthers and the girl with the eagle from Samurai Showdown? I'm not certain.Gamexplain will have the breakdown for sure of the ones who failed to get the invite.
Btw, I love that the invite from the villager trailer, then into Smash's treasure in Joker's trailer, and now this weird SNK nostalgia trip (witch I know nothing from this "famous in south america" series)

Terry is from Fatal Fury and Nakoruru is from Samurai Shodown, but both have also appeared in The King of Fighters, alongside Iori.

God damn it, Sakurai comes out as being so likeable!
And other than that, everything about the Smash show was perfect for me. Everything about Banjo-Kazooie oozes nostalgia for me and Terry marked my early teen years as being that one single time when I actually liked the main character (never got why, but I REALLY liked Terry back then) and could partake in the happiness of liking the popular character. Also, that SNK reveal trailer was the best thing (when I saw Kyo hand going for the invitation I was "oh, c'mon, him!? seriously? :/". They totally got me).
EDIT: Seeing you guys don't know the characters from Fatal Fury, Samurai Shodown and KOF's golden age made me suddenly realize how old I am.

Glad Sans ended up as a Mii fighter amd not a full fledged character. Id be a little miffed if f he was the first Indie rep.
Sakurai seemed much more jovial this time around, it was so nice. I bet hes been getting more sleep.

If we get another 5, I would guess/want: Rex (with Pyra and Mythra), a new Pokemon from Sword/Shield (grass starter final form?), Dante, Rayman, Byleth
3 reps of Switch games, an Ubisoft rep and an opportunity to make Bayonetta meet Dante in the same game would be really cool.
Byleth using crests, relics and faith skills could make him/her original enough (though I know that won't stop "sword/too many FE rep" complaints).
But I totally expect to be wrong and for that new batch to only feature 3rd parties once again.

Alas, with both an assist trophy and a Mii costume, my hopes for GBA Zero to make the cut vanishes. Crash Bandicoot hopes still going strong though (He's had more nintendo exclusive games than playstation ones!)

And was it just me, or did Sakurai look like a zombie in that video? Totally out of it, like on the verge of delirium from sleep deprivation. Possibly plastered in makeup to hide the decomposing flesh of a dead man, chained to the world of the living by his duty to Smash. There were a few moment where, disturbingly, I saw a resemblance to Michael Jackson.

Terry is Fatal Fury's main character, an old dead SNK franchise. Fatal Fury, along with Art of Fighting and other minor SNK titles, were dropped and had most of its characters moved to King of Fighters, the title that is undoubtedly SNK's most famous one.
Probably picking one of the King of Fighters protagonists (similar to JoJo, each KoF arc has its protagonist) to join Smash should be more obvious choices… that's probably the reason why Terry's reveal trailer starts pretending Kyo (KoF most famous and classic protagonist - we can only see his hand in the reveal trailer), is going to be the one joining.
Besides Kyo, probably the most obvious choice would be Haohmaru, Samurai Shodown protagonist (the only major fighting franchise from SNK that was not "cannibalized" by KoF. It also just got resurrected two months ago). Mai would be another likely choice as she is probably the most popular SNK character and their "mascot". Weirdly, just like the other KoF protagonists besides Kyo, Haohmaru and Mai didn't even appear in the trailer.25 years ago, sure, Terry would be the most obvious choice, now he shouldn't make even the top5. Terry remained a prominent character in King of Fighters throughout its whole existence, but he was never the main character.
Supposing it was SNK who suggested him and not Sakurai, I wonder what they were planning... regardless, for old gamers (and pretty much any +30 latino guy who devoted big parts of their childhood to fighting games) this is like a nostalgic punch straight to the guts and feels like a sweet homage to the old SNK days. -
I don't know SNK, but I super loved the trailer and can respect that to a lot of people this is a huge deal. That said, in the couple of days that between this reveal and learning of Nakoruru's existence, I grew to really hope it was her and now I'm sad it wasn't.
Was really hoping for Sans as a playable fighter, since indies are that one realm of ludicrous that still hasn't been done. The fact that Sans just getting a skin and a song and EVEN THEN it was such a huge deal for the internet makes me wish we could have gotten the full deal. Still, good job for getting me to instantly buy a mii fighter skin, never thought I would do that.
With more DLC on the way, I am torn between wanting more Nintendo characters this time, and wanting them to really push that third party frontier even more. More female/western characters would be my hope too.

Estelle is my number one dream announcement (though my man Olivier would get an equal amount of excitement from me). Too bad it's an niche series, and even if the series was given a rep I'm pretty sure they would take a character from the most recent games, which most likely would mean Rean unfortunately.

Ya know? I was ok with the trophies being gone, if it meant getting smash earlier, but I'd put down money now (like 10 to 20$) for spicing up all the game with collectibles. Except in home run mode. Ignoring that has made me happy.

I've been collecting the event spirits for months but it's gotten really tedious having to quit whatever game I'm currently playing, pop in the Smash Ultimate cart and fight a few easy battles spread out over several hours.

There was a ton of love put into the spirit fights, but then you can't just go and do "ya know, I want to kill Hinawa again" unless the board lets you, or you do world of light until that moment.
