Just finished it. Really didn't think the story was that bad, just missing a ton of connective tissue. Like, I liked the concept for the villain, didn't mind the main squad, and could see there being some interest in the world, but it was either done very slow or way too fast. Most of the middle chapters of the game felt like they were done by different crews with entirely different focuses.
Combat was meh. Open world was both kind of neat and too unvaried.
I don't love MGS, but seems to me the next FF needs some sort of strongly top-down control-freak approach like Kojima, because the last main-line games have really felt like they were made by committee.

! and all I gotta ask is what with the recurring downer/bittersweet endings?….I mean they're not necessarily new given how VII and X went but is there any other Final Fantasy games that are you know a bit less somber or depressing?.....besides probably X-2. I mean the true endings to the SMT games don't hit you in the face so as the some of the endings to these games do..
I've often wondered about that myself; seems like being supported by people who only want you there so the world can end in fire (with you going to Hell in the process) would be somewhat off-putting

Yeah, but that's IX's MO. It's all about death, the fear of death, losing the ones you love, and learning the fates worse than death. Zidane has to live that he unwillingly was the cause of countless lives being lost. Garnet learns of her lost past and dead family at the cost of her own mother, whom she still loved. Freya learns that her lover is still alive, but he has no memory of her, a fate worse than his death in her eyes.
And Vivi vs Kuja.
Vivi - "I'm scared because I know I'm going to die at any second, but… I have friends who love me so it will be okay."
Kuja - "FUCK ALL OF YOU! IF I'M GOING TO DIE, YOU'RE ALL COMING WITH ME!"
And as unpopular as the final boss was, Necron was a fate worse than death. He wouldn't just kill you, he would erase your existence. All memory of you would be erased permanently. And as we know, memories are what keep us alive 'forever and beyond'.

A good example of this was the Quickenings (or Mist Knacks or whatever they were called). In the olden days a limit break would mean Barret doing some shootin', Zell doing some punchin', Quina doing some eatin' or Wakka doing some ballin'. But in XII, only Frans felt truly related to related to her character. The rest was interchangeable pyrotechnic nonsense. For example, Penelo has a quickening which description reads "Invoke the wrath of the ancients". What does that mean? What are the ancients? How do they relate to Penelo? How can she invoke them?
FF7 still has the best limit breaks to me due to how entrenched in the characters they were

Yeah, it's probably an unpopular opinion, but I rather liked Prompto and his relationship with Noctis. Definitely had an initial, "oh, so he's going to be that character" moment with him. And his whole "pining after every single female character" thing is pretty terrible.

With respect to XV, seems like the side quest availability is really uncoordinated in comparison to plot progression. Maybe they expected people to get bored and keep a good balance between side quests and main quest? My problem is that I tend to be OCD with quest markers, so although I've barely started Chapter 4 plotwise (just followed Ardyn in his car), I'm already level 45.
Ah well, hopefully it makes the infamous Chapter 13 easier.
What gets me about the discussion on FFXV(well on gaf at least) now that the honeymoon is over is the double standard.
Before FFXV came out, there was a group of people that were really wistful about FFXIII Versus basically being lost during development and sharing their views on how they liked certain aspects of that "game/concept better".
The counter argument was generally stop comparing that game doesn't exist, it only exists in your head it's useless to compare, so shut up.
Fair enough, I can see the logic I guess although I personally think it's fair to talk about it when your marketing campaign is so fucking misleading that even the rereveal trailer barely has any footage from the real game.
Now I see some of those same people basically write essays about the wasted potential of FFXV(villains, story, etc etc).
Just scratching my head because the basis for that argument are also things that don't exist. By the previous argument they only exist in your head.

Not that I don't get the sentiment, I actually agree the farther I get into XV the more I feel like if this had like 1-2 more years.
Also not sure what the cost breakdown was that made them decide to do Kingsglaive and the anime seems like a waste of money. I guess it had more to do with them being forced to get it out this holiday season instead of actual money not being available. So basically a lack of studio manpower.
I love the gameplay and the open world. They really are exactly what I was expecting.
But the story is a disaster. It starts very well, even more if you've watched Kingslave before playing. The more you play, the more you understand that it's going nowhere. Like one scenarist killed himself with each character.
The Emperor of Nifelhein is in one cutscene. He turns into a monster off screen. The player knows this only because Ignis whispers "that's all that's left of the emperor" when you beat a mob that is slightly less easy than the rest in chapter 13…WTF ?
The old guy in red in the same cutscene is never mentioned again after he is given a name lol
Aranea disappears after chapter 12 like she never existed.
Ravus' character development is a mess.
What the hell did Gladios do when he left the group ?
I have lost my interest in game reviews for a long time now. I mostly buy my games because they are sequels to my favorite series or blockbuster.

Got World of Final Fantasy for Christmas, and started playing last night. It feels like Final Fantasy x Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga x Digimon World: Data Squad. It's really weird, but refreshing.
Story is a complete mess and it was totally written with kids in mind for the dialogue, but I don't mind.
I'll probably play Final Fantasy XV eventually. Maybe after I get a little tired of this, Pokemon Moon, and Dead Rising 1.
As for the game, I feel the story goes by too quickly and makes the game really short feeling if you're not a side quest person.
That is how I describe an Assassin's Creed game.
No kidding about the story. I took my sweet-ass time to do most of the hunts and side quests at the start of chapter 4 (by the time I finished I was level 55 LOL), and it's only been today that I revisited the story. Now I've pretty much breezed through that nonexistence of a story and gotten to the end of chapter 8, ready to sail to Altissia.
Naturally, I'll be doing some more hunts because God knows how little there's left in the story once I actually get there.
I actually recommend just rushing through the main story(you're way overleveled anyway) because then you open up postgame(flying car,etc) where you then can do lots of endgame/high level stuff.
I was kinda aiming to get all the optional royal arms first, and at level 59 I'm just about ready to barge into Costlemark… soooo yeah, might do that first and then just rush the story rofl.
The really sad thing about this is that Square Enix has three high pedigree RPGs coming out/recently released: Dragon Quest 7, Dragon Quest 8 and Dragon Quest 11. Final Fantasy XV may be mediocre, but Dragon Quest 7 was great and has held my attention for almost 200 hours so far.

Honestly don't know if that would help. Maybe a bit but from what I've observed during and after the XV release people are not very eager to go out of their comfort zone, which for the west is FF. People rather take a FF with all its shortcomings than take the plunge into what discourse would probably regard as more coherent/rewarding RPG experiences. And comfort is important because I assume people generally don't do impulse buys on games that are unknown quantities to them. It doesn't help that over the years it has become way harder to compare DQ to FF to somewhat paint a picture of familiarity.
The most frustrating thing personally when you look at sales you just know there has to be way more overlap between the FF customer base and the potential DQ/other JRPGs in general. People just won't give those titles a chance.
Yeah sometimes it really ain't just about how much of their marketing they're putting towards moreso than it is brand recognition.
I remember when the rereveal trailer was released at E3, people were going bananas about it. It's a reception envied by most of its competition worldwide, and Square would be stupid not to capitalize on that, even if it unforutnately isn't the direction that we were hoping it'd go.
Although I'll give XV its credit that I prefer XV's paper thin story compared to the complete absurd mess that XIII is.
Truly the actual gaming aspect is pretty great. Fights are both dynamic and strategic (unless your level is too high lol).
The open world is gorgeous.
And their are a looooot of hidden bosses, dungeons and treasures post game.
And to be honest even though it feels rushed the story is quite pleasant as a setup until chapter 9. But then it gets even more rushed and anticlimactic. A story game patch… really ? They will need more than one of those.
What's really crazy is that all the cutscenes from the 2013 trailer fit in the story of the actual game.
I don't know if I'd call XV strategic even if your low leveled given how item usage is integrated and generally there not really being that many option for you too take. What XV combat is to me and what makes it enjoyable is the general flow and the intertwining animations many of them having great weight and impact, basically it's very fun trying to win battles with style.
That said I cannot disagree with a lot of criticism of the XV combat. It's interesting cause I feel like I flipped sides with me not being at all into XIII combat which many praise. So I can empathize with that side.
Final Fantasy Record Keeper continues to hold onto my soul.
