Seeing as we now know quite a fair bit about the up coming next gen consoles (Xbox 360, PS3, Nintendo Revolution). I thought it might be cool to discuss what people are most looking forward to or anything they don't yet no to be cleared up.
I myself am looking forward to what will be so revolutional about Nintendo's new controller and how will online gameplay evolve?

I am so SICK of hearing about online gameplay.
It's only useful if you have broadband, which many people still don't.
Online centric games often lack in single-player fun, so you can't enjoy the $50 game when offline.
-
I'm also sick of hearing about it. It's cool, but I don't like it to be a focus.
-
to be honest I'm not going to buy a new console just because it has a better online play. I just mentioned it as it is what the companies will most likely be focusing most on, due to the high level of people who can't get enough of the idea and I thought it is worth hearing other peoples views on it.
-
I don't really care for online game play either. If I play someone, I'd rather play someone I know IRL than some stupid six year old kid who only speaks L33t and is a cheap player.
I'm also a bit pissed at how everyone is saying:
"Ooh, wow! Look at what the insert name here can do visually!"Sure, graphics are nice BUT I don't feel they're important. In my eyes a game isn't and shouldn't be made or broken by the graphics. It should depend on how the game plays, if the game's lifespan is good and how easy it is to pick up and play.
However a new SSB game has been confirmed which I like the sound of, and the fact I'll be able to download old Nintendo games.
-

That's would have been a great Idea 5 years ago.
-
I'd like to know if Nintendo is going to stop dropping their current consoles like a dead body whenever they announce a new console.
I know that when companies plan something new, the older one gets less and less attention, but it'd rediculous with Nintendo. The only big name stuff coming out for the holidays is the new Zelda game and a bunch of Mario sports games while the Revolution comes out in 2006. Yet Microsoft is still cranking out some big name titles even though their console comes out later this year.
It's just a big ass mistake espically when Nintendo's quartly profits drop 80%.
-
The focus on online gaming is annoying, but I guess necessary. XBOX Live is one of the more successful things about that system. Online gaming is good if you know the right people to play with (playing with random schmucks is irritating), and if you can play the game yourself (like, online Smash Brothers would be awesome).
As for the new generation… I really don't care, I don't have as much money as I used to, and I want to focus more on schoolwork and getting into college next year.
-
I think lonline play is just stupid. Lol My whole family hates in
-
Online gaming and me don't mix. The only time I played on it, I got my ass handed to me via Halo multiplayer. It was okay, but I prefer single player stuff.
One thing, however, that didn't get much mention in this thread is the prices of the games/consoles. If I do get a next-gen console, it'll be at least a yearafter it launches. The games will probably around $60 a pop (my guestimate).
-
Online game?nah not suit with me>_>(Sometimes it's good to play onliine but I won't happy if every game are online game. )
what I want is the game that has good idea of gameplay, not better graphic but still has same gameplay with other games.
-
I'm not very interested in the new consoles, and it would take truly marvelous games (possibly FF XIII, or the new SSB maybe?) for me to even consider bying them, seeing as how the price will propably be too high, and the only real differences would be better graphics…
And more online games. Which I (mostly) don't approve of (Capn' Carters idea is great, for example). The best example for me is propably the Ratcheet and Clank series; UYA was quite enjoyable, but felt like a "GC with online-mode" add on. The fact that Deadlocked is very focused on online kills me.Also, WTF is up with the PS3 not being compatible with the old memory cards? Whats the point of being able to play your old games, only you have to start over, and they have to occupy space on the new card? Sony better fix this problem, or I won't buy a Ps3- even for a new Final Fantasy.
To be honest, my interest is focused on the Handheld consoles. My GBA has brought me great enjoyment.
-
In the end, I'm likely to get all three consoles, but there's a little about each one that pisses me off.
The Revolution pisses me off the least, but it annoys me that Nintendo is being so damn secretive about it. I love their online plan, though: all first party games free to play online, small fee for downloading old games (I'll be more than willing to pay,) and WIRELESS. If you don't have a wireless router, you can pick up a USB nintendo router that not only works with the Revolution, but your DS as well. Pair that with cheap at launch and SSB ONline at launch, and I think this will be the first console of the next generation I'm going to get, despite it coming out last.
The X360 is currently shaping up to be the second system I'm gonna buy, mostly because the first price drop will likely come around the time the games I turly want (Lost Oddessy, Blue Dragon, and others) come out. However, their lack of backwards compatibility baffles me, and their inability to ship a console that has everything promised at launch (no HD-DVD drive until next spring) makes me irritated.
That leaves the PS3. It will take ALOT to warrant the cost of that thing for me. At least, more than MGS4 and a Final Fantasy. I'm talking a new Wild ARMs actually coming to america (dammit, when's 4 getting here?), Xenosaga and Nippon Ichi here. However, even them I'm pissed. You can't use your old saves on this system (no memory card slots), you can't use old special controllers like dance pads and light guns (no controller ports,) and forced HD (unless the rumors are true and they actually are planning to allow Standard Definition after all, which would only make me a bit happier.)
So, yeah, that's my two cents. Online play DOES mean something to me, but it shouldn't cost much, if anything at all.
Edit: This just in! Buy an X-Box 360, or the PS3 will be delayed! http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20050804-5170.html
The only reason I ask this of you is because I want the PS3 to be semi affordable by the time good games actually come out.
-
I'm not really impressed with the new systems. When the PS2, X-box, and GB came out, the graphics were ten times better than the PSX and N64, but the next generation barrely seems like a step above the current gen. Does anyone else think so, or is it just me?
I don't know, they just don't seem very impressive. Especially when a new system will probably cost as much as 400-500 dollars. The only things I've seen so far that really interest me are Blue Dragon and some other RPG for X-box360 that looked interesting.
And as for Online gameplay, I really don't care about it. The reason I play video games is to get away from people and have some fun. -
PS3 all teh way.
Though the lack of memory cards is somewhat discerning… but I'm sure (dead sure) that they'll develop adaprters... you know, wireless doohickeys for the memory cards or something. Or, at the very least, some third parties will develop it.
-
I´m looking forward for the PS3. The two previous Sony Consoles where the one´s that mostly appealed to my personal console and gaming preferences, so I guess it won´t be any different with the third generation.
And I agree what´s been said about the online factor so far. It sure is a nice feature but the industry shouldn´t focus on it so far. Gaming consoles became popular without that feature so there´s no need in over focusing on something that didn´t make the media big. Consoles are fun to play alone or with your real life friends. Online stuff is what made PC gaming big so keep it that way.
-
Most likely I won't buy any of them, I had my share of console gaming already and I'm just not that interested anymore. Although I might reconsider if the price tag will remain purse friendly - which it probably won't. Revolution could work out if it fulfills what they're promising but I'm a bit sceptic. Others… well, they won't offer anything my PC already does.
I like online gaming a lot of more and - as a rule - with strategy games (which covers most of mine purchases anyway; I don't buy many though, I uphold for free community and media) usually have either cheating or otherwise stupid AI and hence humans are much more fun (humans can be stupid and cheating too but at least with variety and depth ).
-
Online play can be fun if you play it with friends. But playing with random people who will go " PWNED N00bS!!111" is really annoying.
-
i dont know what system i want yet ive bearly heard anything from the revolution. the xbox360 kinda looks good but i hear u cant play regalur xboxs which is dumb and the ps3 i dont know but usually they have fun games so idk
-
warp, do you mean Xbox games? If so, the 360 is supposedly backwards compatible with Xbox games.

which clan that you register with?(I'm RTS fan but still didn't have a clan yet>_>.)

Quick question, who do you think will win the "console war" as it is known?
Playstaion 3
Xbox 360
Nintendo Revolution
Being a huge follower of nintendo I'd realy like that to do the best but I believe Xbox 360 will do the best. Mianly because of it's earlier release and it sounds a whole better package. -

I want the Revolution. Some good features and backwards capability.
PS3 costs too much…
And the Xbox 360 doesn't have much going for them, games-wise.
-
@Solar:
warp, do you mean Xbox games? If so, the 360 is supposedly backwards compatible with Xbox games.
At the E3 Microsoft Press Conference, they claimed that the 360 would be backwards compatible with the most popular games from the xbox… This doesn't say much for actual backwards compatibillity.
I personally cannot live without online gaming. After trying out MMOs, I can't get enough <3. I, though.. love my console games as well. Kingdom Hearts Please~
Online gaming bieng the center of games is sometimes needed... Unreal Tournament offline, needless to say, is not fun.
-
I'm not going to buy any new consoles…my brother will. But, henever plays and why would I need a PS3 (Thats is the only console I would get because I don't like any Xbox games and I already have an older Nintendo) when the PS2 I love works fine and has games like Kingdom Hearts, Jak series, and other?
I doubt I'll bu PS3, unless the next couple of KH games come out for PS3, then I would just for those games.
-
Seeing as the next gen cnsoles are almost upon us, with the Xbox 360 just weeks away. I thought it would be a good idea to revive this thread so people can vent their anger/joy confusion/ hopes with others with regards to the games coming out, new features, etc..
-
I will probably get both the Revolution and the PS3, last time around I hated the X-box (yes, I did own it)
-
Well it seems as though the future of gaming is now upon us. The Xbox 360 has been out nearly two weeks both sides of the big pond (atlantic ocean). I haven't got one yet as I couldn't be bothered to splash out £280+ on a console that has no games that make that price seem worth it.
I've also been reading lately about the 20GB harddrive not actually allowing people to access the full 20GB. as much as 12GB has been unavailible. Also in the gaming news was the rumor that Halo 3 might need 4 discsOne particular 'highly anticipated' Xbox 360 title is currently taking up four 9GB DVDs, while many developers are reportedly struggling to fit their games on to just one disc.
So say fresh rumours that the extra storage demands of next-gen games are just too high, and 360's 'old' DVD reader is a technological bottleneck. A standard DVD holds 4.5GB, though dual layer discs can hold 9GB. By contrast, Sony's PS3 features new Blu-Ray discs which can store 54GB.
However, a game that took up four 9GB discs - 36GB - would be seven times bigger than today's average.
Current PC games, such as FEAR, Half-Life 2 or Call of Duty 2 come in at less than 5GB for a full install. The exact identity of the 'highly anticipated' game is yet to be revealed, though nothing is more anticipated than the next Halo.
Even the extra demands of hi-res textures don't fully explain the leap in size, as current PC titles are designed to work at resolutions of anything up to 1600x1400. A TV running the current max of 720p equates to 1280x720.
Huge extra demands on storage are more likely to come from high-quality sound and video files.
We'll bring you more as soon as any new information emerges
Is there anyone out there in AP land that owns a Xbox 360? as of yet, dispite the fact there are 400,000 floating around out there I've yet to meet anyone who owns one.
-
I've played the Xbox 360; but I don't think that will help you out much…
Anyways; I don't know what new consel I may get. (If my family does get one of those three it will probably be in a couple of years...)
PS3-- I so far havn't been interested in the Playstation games/systems (probably due to the fact that I've never had/played any playstation)
Xbox 360-- I don't know what game I'd play on it; but my brothers and my dad DO.
Nintendo Revolution-- I don't know what kind of weird games are going to be on there; but it should be at least a LITTLE bit familiar to me (I have a gamecube :>); and if I don't like it I should be able to use the controller as nunchucks...
Well; see you guys-- IN THE FUTURE!!

Ive played Call of Duty 2 on it. And all ive got to say is wow. I wasnt really considering a xbox 360, I was mainly praying for the Revolution to be great, but I have to say, the 360 was pready increadable. I love the new contorller, it wasent bulky or awkward like the original xbox controler, they added a new shoulder buttons so its sortof resembles a ps2 controller. But man the graphics on it were insane, normally im not that caught up in graphics, as long as the gameplay is good, but man for the first time in my gaming experiance the graphics improved my experiance playing the game. For instance, I trew a granade at a nazi and it exploded behind him and launched him straight at me, I could see his terified expression as he barreled tword me. Awsome. All I can say is the 360 comes highly recomended.

The Revolution.
The possibilities make me giddy with excitement, especially since I plan on entering the gaming industry (Nintendo exclusive, thank you).
The Revolution pisses me off the least, but it annoys me that Nintendo is being so d*mn secretive about it.
True, but think about it: as soon as they coame out with something new (or a new way of doing it), what happens? The others just about copy them.
Analog? Check. Shoulder buttons? Check? Rumble Feature? Check.Quick question, who do you think will win the "console war" as it is known?
Honestly, I don't care. Nintendo isn't the "war". This "war" is between Sony and MS, as they're big industries that compete by doing the same things, only supposedly "better".
Nintendo doesn't need to "fight". They're going in a different direction, putting them in a whole new league of gaming that Sony and MS could never imagine.Oh, and SSBRevo (as I like to call it), will most definetly be "teh AMESURMNESS". XD
-
Wait, before we speculate who's gonna win the next console war, who won the war before? PS2, XBOX or Gamecube?
Being an owner of PSX and PS2, I'll most likely wait for PS3's price to come down. And down.
-
Oh, and SSBRevo (as I like to call it), will most definetly be "teh AMESURMNESS". XD
Have you thought about how your gonna play it with the new controller? I mean think about how anoyying its gonna be holding the remote thing and trying to move your charecter, I can forsee a-lot of frusteration of tiny movements causeing anoying deaths and unwaned movements
-
There are arrow key buttons and an analog joystick with it for those kinds of games that just seem impossible to use with just the remote control mechanisim.

Even so… look at the lack of buttons. Im thinking that its gonna be awkward holding it and trying to pull off lightning fast moves that SSB requires. Dont get me wrong Im super excited about the revolution, but I think that teqniqual games like fighting games, wont work well. But I really think it will do wonders for games like Mario Party. But I think sport games will become nonexistant on the Revolution. But Racing games might be cool and maybe something like a first person sowrd fighting rpg would be sooooooo cool. -

As I recall, I made that post back in august before the controller was revealed. Back then I was enthusiastic, but a bit annoyed about the lack of information. Now I'm bouncing all over, my inner nintendo fanboy giddy with uncontainable glee. The Revolution is the best of the three consoles in my eyes, both with the imagination of a gamer and my wish to be a game developer. The other two consoles don't excite my imagination NEARLY as much as the revolution.
As for what can be done with it… I'm convinced that nothing that can be done on the typical controllers can't be done by the revolution, but the revolution can do plenty of things that the others can't. Slap the nunchaku attachment on there, and what you have is three shoulder buttons, three face buttons, start and select, an analog stick and a d-pad (I did a little bit of mental measuring, and I think the two buttons towards the base of the controller are still accessable even held vertically, since the thing seems to only be 5 inches from base to top.) By making modern controls for games more efficient and using the range of movement, there's literally nothing that thing can't do. FPSes use the stick for movement and the rotation of the controller for looking, b to shoot, d-pad to change weapons, jump with a, etc; Sports games use the movement of the controller to full advantage (the demo vid even suggested using the controller as a bat in baseball, and I can see dribbling and passing for basketball, passing for football, etc;) fighting games can use the six buttons just like any fighting game, or they could do what's right and do something even more interesting by using movement. Everything else doesn't need any changing.
Another thing that made me understand what Nintendo was going for here was a brief encounter with the XBox 360 at the mall when I was with my dad. I walked up to the demo kiosk to mostly test it's controller, which I heard was excellent (I found nothing special about it.) My dad, however, picked up the controller and said quickly after looking once at the front and back, "That's too much to keep track of." I laughed and told him about how Nintendo thought just that, and explained the rev controller and business design. He seemed to think it was a good idea. Him, a non-gamer. I smile. ^^
Aside from that, the other consoles have some things that look interesting (several RPGs on the X360 and MGS4 for the PS3) but NOTHING that warrants a 400+ dollar pricetag, so I'm gonna be waiting for a while, enjoying my revolution during all that time. ^^
-
you know i went down to my local mall today to try out the 360 and was expecting to be blown away by the the insane graphics but what do you get ?
Kameo fucking looks like an early ps2 game and Call of duty 2 looks like it does on my old crappy computer i mean what the helli only hope that this is cause they haven learned how to use the new hardware yet and that it will improve significantly cause i planned on buying a 360 whilst i waited for the Rev.
-
Of course, wolfwood, you realise that the TV you'll hook that 360 up to is generally only capable of 640x480 level graphics.
Fine, you can buy a hi-def set and it might well look better, but still, that's another several hundred dollars on top of the already pricey X360.
Does it do VGA out at least, so you could hook it to a nice computer monitor?
-

seems that the Revo will be out around $150 or less, not bad, not bad!

Definetley Revo b/c of backwards capiballity and SSB online

Easy, and I can do it with just the controller itself; no attachment:
Tilt it sideways.
-D-pad for movement and up for jump.
-'a' is Normal Attack
-'b' is Smash Attack
-B trigger is block and grab
-Want taunt? Try the overly large A button.
-C attacks? Here's the fun part: move the controller. Hold guard and move it to do dodge and roll moves. -
ANCIENT TOPIC IS ANCIENT BUT….
Here's one reason why I can never support digital only games as the "way of the future".
http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/13/marble-blast-ultra-rolls-right-off-of-xbla/
-
No real ownership
Company can go bust/lose rights and stop hosting the game(your example)
Company may change drm methods and make the game non transferable to a new pc/console
Can't sell the game if times become hard
Company can potentially be compelled to remotely delete game from your console if there is a legal issue
No competition so no salesa shining future indeed
-
On the plus side, if you already owned it, you don't have to worry about losing it if you delete it. Just stops being available to purchase for those who don't own it.
-
In a best case scenario yes. If the system goes down, or they lost the rights for it, or go bankrupt, or any one of a number of scenario's that have happened in the past occured, then you're out of luck.
Of course you could always break the physical copy as well, but at least there you know where you stand. With ddl there's a constantly changing morass of legal issues, drm and company solvency etc etc to worry about.
-
Just thinking of this last night. Simple fact is, we do not have the resources for an all digital market yet. Next-gen games would be every bit of 50gbs each, and you'd have to download every single one of them. We don't have the internet speed or the hard drive space to host a sizable collection. Consoles would need like 2TB hard drives in them, and that'd be ridiculously expensive. Not to mention internet speed, it would take ages to download something that large, and just as long to install it.
We'd all be miserable if we went fully digital.

True, but you say that as if it will still be true a few years from now. With time, the current notion of the infeasibility of a 100% digital market will seem silly. Of course the question is how MUCH time that will take, and I really don't have an answer for that.
I like my CD booklets full of disks and my carry-cases full of cartridges, but I think the move to a digital market is a logical one. The lack of manufacturing costs and the streamlining of the game retail experience is the stuff of dreams for the big game companies, and the digital distribution model makes a TON of sense for indie developers that lack the capital to finance a full-blown retail release. Right now physical media and digital media can exist hand in hand fairly comfortably in the game industry, but I feel that the future will skew more and more towards digital and people will have to simply get used to it.
-
I sure do hope that once we do go digital they start and make releasing a Demo mandatory for each game. The good thing about buying a physical copy is that if the game is shit then you can take it back or sell it or whatever. If it's digital then once you pay £40 for a game and it's a piece of shit. Deal with it.
-
Fuck digital gaming.
