I liked Hatred best in his second season appearance. Creepy fetishism at its finest.

@robbybevard:
It was a 22 minute rape joke. From multiple characters. NOT funny IMO. The saving grace on it of course was that it was freaking KEVIN CONROY doing it, which added a few layers to it, but if you DON'T know that fact, it completley falls apart.
I didn't know it was Conroy, and I still enjoyed it. Geez, some of you guys need to loosen up a bit. I'm with Demon Rin on this one, and I gotta say Monarch really shined, here. We got to see his casual side, and his villainous side, in top form this episode. His tirade toward Captain Sunshine was great stuff.
Oh, and Sunshine's superhero group was friggin' hilarious.
-
This episode is amazing. The prog stuff is really hitting it home for me
-
Any episode with Dermott is great in my book.
-
todays episode was so AWESOME xDDD DIES poor Dean…
-
Good episode. Seemed a little dull for me in comparison to other episodes, but still good. Loved the return of the cart from Buddy System.
-
I can back up what they said about In The Court Of The Crimson King. That was my gateway into prog and I've been overcome with the desire to become a mad scientist since.
-
lol, I always figured Rusty was a prog fan.
-
Monarch was badass this episode. Bout time someone put those moppets in their place. Password line is a new favorite of mine.
-
Good episode all around. I found this scene oddly sweet too:
!
-
Yeah, that scene was really well done and easily one of the best moments of the season so far.
-
About Captain Sunshine…
From Jackson Publick's livejournal:
1. Captain Sunshine = NOT an actual pedophile.
-
I thought that was obvious.
All the innuendo was actually him being super ultra paranoid about yet another Sunshine Boy dying, and that kiss at the end was
. -

.Lol I thought it was too, but there were a few in this thread that were disturbed by him actually being a pedophile.
-
I was never disturbed, rather him being a pedophile or just made to look like one. Either way the entire episode was a big 22-min long "Gay Superhero with a young sidekick" joke, which has been done to death.
-
Now we got a feud between the Ventures and Phantom Limbs now. With the more information about the Orb.

Ha ha ha, you know I was thinking that for a moment, but I couldn't be sure. So what happened to Ritchie Valens?
Anyway, this was an awesome episode. My favorite parts were the return of the Phantom Limb (who is now completely off his nut), Billy being inside that burlap sack for most of the episode, the return of David Bowie, and Lady Nightshade turning out to be Dr. Mrs. The Monarch's shoe XD
I hope they do more with the ORB though, even though it turned out that it's been broken this whole. I had such high hopes for a major story arc revolving around it.
-
I'm just mad that I somehow didn't pick up on the whole Fantomas reference waaaaaay back. >_<
-
I was wondering when we'd see Phantom Limb again. Very good episode. I loved the council members not knowing where they really were at the beginning.
-
Wait, so did Jonas Venture get killed over something that didn't even work or was his death a fakeout like his predecessor's?
-
Hahahah. David Bowie. I missed him. XD
-
The Revenge Society was amazing.
"Why can't I hear them?"
"Because you are sane!"And Revenge's suspicion of Wisdom was brilliant. Let's just say he went out on a limb there pause for booing.
-
Wait, so did Jonas Venture get killed over something that didn't even work or was his death a fakeout like his predecessor's?
The season 3 flashback indicated he was killed by his bodyguard.
This new flashback amended it. His death was faked, and the orb was broken instead. Where he is now… we don't know.
(My personal theory is he's a meber of the Guild of Calamatous Intent, or perhaps even the founder/true leader)

That's not Jonas though, but his father. Well, unless Colonel Venture was his grandfather, which is possible seeing as how the the organization that wound up becoming the Guild of Calamitous Intent was around while Mark Twain was still alive. For Lloyd Venture to be Jonas' dad would require that Jonas be close to sixty when Rusty was a kid and he doesn't seem anywhere near that old.
(My personal theory is he's a meber of the Guild of Calamatous Intent, or perhaps even the founder/true leader)
Who? Jonas? That's possible. Lloyd Venture couldn't be though as Dragoon and Red Mantle are the two oldest members of the Guild. Of course, that might not be right though since another member of The Council of the Thirteen appears to be Doctor Zin and he was probably in his forties when Jonny Quest first aired. Colonel Venture would have to be something like 140 years old to be in the Guild though, which seems a bit unlikely.
-
I'm sorry, but this season just isn't doing it for me so far.
-
I was feeling like that with Season 3, but as soon as I watch the episodes over again, I discover gems that make it fantastic.
-
That's not Jonas though, but his father.
…right. Mix up on my part. My mind combined the two characters for a moment there. I was half asleep when I saw the new episode.
But given that grandpa venture's "death" was different than wha we saw, its easy enough to believe Jonas had a different fate too. Particularly since they've be SO coy about what really happened to him
And as to waht I said before, what I meant to imply is that JONAS Venture is responsible for/on the Guild.
! I think Dr. Jonas Venture Sr. is still alive. They have always been very vague about his death. Nothing has ever been confirmed. So, what do we know about him?
! Jonas Venture was the ultimate badass. A super heroic, super scientist. Negotiated many treaties with the Guild of Calamitous Intent. The world loved him.
! But every time we flashback to him, we see more and more that the guy was a huge, amoral bastard. He gets worse every time. From being a crappy, crappy father, to leaving a bunch of children to die beneath the compound.
! So, I think Jonas is still alive. I also think he's a member of the Guild of Calamitous Intent. I think he is one of the shadowy Council of Thirteen. We've never gotten a look at them. (well, until this latest ep, but that just further makes the point that even they don't know who is who, or where the transmissions are being broadcast from.)
! I believe he arranged for the Monarch to briefly stop arching Rusty, and then he sent Dr. Killinger to attempt to make Rusty a supervillain. Obviously both didn't go well, and now the Monarch is legally arching Rusty Venture.
! Hell, for all we know, David Bowie may be a front man, and Jonas might be the actual Sovereign…
! ... okay, that last part is unlikely. But, I think he's definitely on the Council.
! Just my wacky theory.Given that its one of the biggest ongoing mysteries of the series (Monarch even asked point blank at the start of season 3 and it got brushed aside) it really feels like we eventually have to really earn hat happened to Jonas.
…Unless he was killed over a BROKEN orb, as indicated in the season 3 flashback, and as you mentioned.
Side note. Eventually Future Rusty Venture has to come back in time to try and stop the angels before the appocolypse. They keep tossing that joke out, now its gotta turn real eventually.
-
I'm sorry, but this season just isn't doing it for me so far.
Is it the lack of Brock? Because I'm enjoying this season but it's just not the same without him.
-
If Jonas is still alive, then I'd figure him for the leadership of SPHINX or being the person behind OSI's technology rather than a member of the Guild. He doesn't really strike me as Evil in the Venture universe sense, a colossal jackass, sure, but not evil so to speak.
-
Is it the lack of Brock? Because I'm enjoying this season but it's just not the same without him.
Actually, I had more or less forgotten about him. It just doesn't feel… Venturey. Maybe it's a combination of things, no Brock, the change in animation, but it just doesn't seem to have the charm the previous seasons had.
-
I dunno man, I think this new Season is quality. It's also nice seeing the characters evolve and change. Seeing Hank and Dean actually having to grow up some now that their clones are all dead is interesting - in particular, seeing how they handled being kidnapped by Henchman 21, was interesting.
And you can't tell me that Captain Sunshine episode wasn't comedic GOLD.
-
I And you can't tell me that Captain Sunshine episode wasn't comedic GOLD.
He wasn't. Strip away that he was voiced by Kevin Conroy, and its just a bunch of pedophile jokes.
Doesn't matter if apparently the character wasn't at all… it was still nothing but a bunch of pedophile jokes.
Actually, I had more or less forgotten about him. It just doesn't feel… Venturey. Maybe it's a combination of things, no Brock, the change in animation, but it just doesn't seem to have the charm the previous seasons had.
I said this over in the South Park thread and I'll go ahead and toss it in here too.
With any series that has had a lengthy run, that then takes hiatuses, followed by just a handful of new episodes, an unreasonable ammount of expectation builds up for a thing.
Don't watch the show for three years. then catch one of the current episodes in reruns amidst a batch of old ones.
You'll find its on par quality wise most of the time. Its just at this point, expectations are raised so high after X years, you expect more out of a new episode. But if you saw an episode you "missed" from a few seasons back, you'd like it more than you do now as a new episode, because you associate it with being in its "prime", and the same weight and expectation of a "new" episode isn't there. When really, its about the same as it always was, its just we've seen so much of it at this point.
The same applies to South Park, Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy, Kim Possible, or Avatar the Last Airbender, or a chapter of HxH or Berserk. They were stronger when they were new, because they were NEW and you didn't know all the character quirks and nuances of the comedy style yet, and the writers hadn't run through their kind of jokes 12 times already, or the story was still moving in a certain direction.
There is naturally, some natural set in of "been there, done that, seen it already", but thats going to happen when you get a lot of any one creator's material over and over, you start to recognize their voice and their style and what they do, and it stops being as fresh, while at the same time, you start remembering the earlier material with fonder and fonder memories. Especially when there's extended year long hiatuses.
There's also some degree of decay, and some dependance on old plot threads or recurring gags, and yes, and natural evolution of style that may take it away from your preference. The Futurama movies were hit and miss, but they perfectly retained the style of the tv show, people had just idealized the show a little more in the 5 years away.
Yes, Simpsons WAS at its best in seasons 2-5 and there was some degradition from there when they consciously switched away from character development towards more straight up comedy, but season 6 isn't all that different from season 10, which wasn't all that different from 15, which is pretty consistent with season 20. Its just you've seen so much of it, that it feel old and worn out. But if your first exposure ever to the franchise was to the new stuff, and then you went back and saw the old, you'd wonder why the pacing was less sharp, the characters less realized.
(the first few episodes of Kim Possible are especially hard to watch compared to later material.)
This season of Ventures has been off in a couple places, but I think its as solid as ever. Once its had time to sit, stew, and pay off at the end of the season, it'll all work better, I think.
-
The first few episodes of Kim Possible really are hard to watch after later ones.
-
I don't think it's the quality that's changed, but the shows dynamic has been altered a lot lately.
-Hank and Dean have finally grown somewhat
-Brock isn't the bodyguard anymore (which does make a huge difference, since his was the voice of reason)
-The Monarch is now a much more competent villain and his team has changed up (Pupa Twins and Dr. Mrs. The Monarch, who were there since last season, and new 21/no 24)
-OSI/TGoCI/SPHINX have taken much more important positions in the show's universe
-Due to the evolution of the series, the characters and world have been developed and have become much more complex (this is kind of a cop out to say, but it's true)There's no doubt that it's become a much different show from what it was in the first season. I haven't seen much of a decline in quality, myself, but I can understand how the new dynamic might turn away some old viewers or attract new ones.
-
I haven't noticed any type of drop of quality. It seems like same Ole good Venture Bros to me.
-
Could someone remind me where SPHINX appeared before this season?
I'm almost certain they did appear earlier, but I've forgotten where.
-
Season 3. During the episode, "The Invisible hand of Fate".
-
Oh, right. I remember now. They were mentioned as an organization the OSI took out or something.
-
They were Cobra to OSI's GI Joe.
-
That episode was actually really good, felt more on par with previous seasons than most of the others.
Freaking 24 is now on par with Hatred in a fight, that's crazy, but I do like all the development for Monarch's crew. Monarch has stepped up big time.
I'm disappointed with Hatred though. It's not like I never liked him, as he was great in season 3, he's just weak and easy now. I was just thinking about the episode where he's in the hot tub with Monarch and comes off totally manipulative and maniacal. When he was shown as the new bodyguard, I was expecting him to be just slightly weaker than Brock but more ruthless and underhanded due to his background as a villain in the GoCI with an occasional boy-love joke, not a continually sobbing pedophile gag.
-
I myself am LOVING this new season, it was WELL worth the wait. I love the most recent episode, it showed just how ruthless and serious the Monarch really is!! GOD it was great XDDD Showing Johnny and the 'Hardy Boys', the 'Astro boy' robot, OH MY GOD.. just.. GOLDEN!!!!!! I just ADORED IT xD I feel sooo bad for Captain Hatred, that poor poor guy!!! XD I'm not sick of the Pedophile jokes, they just add to his retardedness, and add to him as a character. Sure he used to be more ruthless, but everyone changes. I'm glad the Venture Bros are more mature, I love how defiant Hank is, and poor Dean xD He still acts pretty much the same, I just LOVE IT!
-
I'd say that the last episode was par for the season: a mixed bag. The stuff with Rusty was great, but the whole pedophile thing continues to grate.
-
I loved the teardrop tattoo around Action Johnny's left eye.
And, of course, Beep Boop.
-
Seems AS is back to Episode 1 for now
Oh wow.. Orpheus Powers Just melted the soldiers face O.o
Glad to see #21 back in the series
I dont get the codenames(Angel, Submariner) or the 22/53K -
Yeah, it's kinda lame that they didn't show a new episode this week when they've only got two more episodes until the huge break. Oh well.
-
Way to troll their viewers… my Sunday was seriously ruined. :/
-
I dont get the codenames(Angel, Submariner)
The Sub-Mariner, Human Torch, and what-not are all references to Marvel Comics #1 as those were the stars of that issue. A lot of people probably don't realize that Namor is seventy years old.
-
Forgot to mention how last weeks episode made me love Action Johnny now.
-
Oh come on guys, have a sense of humor. They did it to all their shows that night in reference to Thanksgiving leftovers. We'll get a new episode next week.
