Dragon Age 2

-
2010. Bioware announces a sequel to an old school role-playing game released in 2009.
It is as impossible as impossibly happy I am.
Baldur Gate IV, huh.
-
yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay
-
Yay! the first game was really fun. I heard rumors that an actual sequal was being made. I'm glad it is confirmed. :)
-
Shit, i need to finish the first one
-
The only thing I'm concerned about right now is that so far we've only heard of one character type. This human refugee.
One of DA:O's selling points was being able to choose your race/class/origin, and if they get rid of that and basically make a Mass Effect with a DA skin on it . . . . . I won't be happy.
-
I'm sure they'll probably stick to the similar DA formula. Heck, the different origins in the first game was one of the game's main selling points. My concern is mainly that I wonder how good it'll be compared to the first one that was in development for years.(Though being in development for so long may have been other problems including establishing gamelore rather than graphics and gameplay.)
-
Well, so far the human character, last name Hawke, is confirmed.
But the community is getting the impression (or outright claim, I haven't waded through everything) that the human character is the ONLY character you can have as your PC. (male or female)
So far I'm getting the impression of a game that's like Fable mixed with Mass Effect. Which is not what I want, honestly. DA had it's own thing going, it shouldn't ape other series, even other Bioware series.
-
That would be dissapointing. I like trying each scenario for each race. Also, it probably isn't taking as long to create since they probably knew they were going to create a sequal. Maybe they came up with the ideas for game number 2 awhile ago since most games, good or bad, have a sequal now.

From the looks of things it looks like we'll be getting all new characters.
Just went wading through the Bioware forums, and a Bioware Dev confirmed it: In DA2 you can only play as a human.
BOO.
-
That sucks…I'm sure i'll still buy it since I have a hard time being disappointed by a Bioware game, but it's still a major disappointment.
-
Yeah. They'd better blow me out of the water with everything else to make up for ditching the origins option.
-
I wasn't enjoying DA1 enough to warrant it's purchase but I think I'll pick it up again cheap.
Can't say I'm jumping over the hill for this one. If they have less long boring conversations and improve the combat (OK. I played this and White Knight Chronicles at the same time so I mix these two up. But this is the one where you can press X, leave the room, come back and have won?)
Either way I like a decent WRPG so I'll pick it up when it's cheap and pre-owned.
-
Hmm, seems a lot like Mass Effect 2, with a pretty significant gameplay overhaul (for both better and worse)
I'm basing this on nothing but personal intuition, but here are a few guesses what this new game will have in store.
-DA2 will have the Dragon Age equivilent of John Shepard. This means there will be a default appearance to both male and female characters, and will feature full voice-acting for this character
-A tactics panel similar to ME2 will be used
-DA2 may remove the playability of other party members (if the description of commanding like a general is taken more literally)
-A main character scale or bar of "Good" or "Evil" could replace the attribute bars of each party member. Another lean towards ME gameplay
-Character interaction on the field may become more limited, given the direction Awakening took in this regard
-Using a previous save file will still change certain scenes and NPC appearances, even if it does not result in the import of the previous character
-If Awakening and ME2 are any indication, the game may focus more on the recruitment of new characters and their sidequest more so than the overarching story (would not mind this)
-Ferelda will still not be free-roaming and will still be navigated via a map

These are the two changes I would probably hate the most. I loved the character interaction, and I would hate for there to be an alignment bar in a Dragon Age game. I think it does just fine without it and persuade skills.
@Gorgeous Nao: Yeah. I loved both voice actors from Mass Effect, and I remember Jennifer Hale's voice acting since KOTOR though I heard her previous roles before that.
Also, god forbid you to say that you dislike her voice or even say you like male Shepard's voice better on Bioware forums lest the Jennifer Hale fans will swoop down upon you, and tell you every reason why your opinion is wrong and Jennifer Hale has the most godly voice on Earth.

I bet the game will be good oh and the BioWare forums are crap imo.
-
If they remember to program it to run on more than one core without crashing I'll be happy.
Seriously though, I'm pumped for this.

- This seems to be confirmed by devs in the forums. Your character is named Hawke.
-I'd rather keep the simple dialogue options, frankly. I don't want Paragon/Renegade infiltrating my DA.
-DO. NOT. WANT. I want to control my party, dammit! Isn't that one of the major complaints of FFXIII?
-Again, I don't want Paragon/Renegade scenarios in DA. That's ME's thing, leave it there. Keep the approval ratings bar on my companions.
-Don't want this either. I like Awakening, but I REALLY like being able to talk to my companions.
-I would hope that our actions taken in DAO would have an effect. Hawke is supposed to be a survivor of the Blight, after all.
-I'm fine with character side quests, as I love Bioware characters. I just hope we get some epic quests ala the "treaties" in DAO.
-Don't mind this part. I just hope that they do something to fix the fact that once you fight every enemy in an area, it stays clear, keeping you from further battle if you wish it. A tough balance to strike, but I'm hopeful.
-
Satsuki pretty much spelled out my thoughts.
All I want is Dragon Age to stay the superb old school western style rpg in the best traditions of Bioware games. No console imitations, no casual simplifications. Just a hero to create, a party to manage and to converse with and a world and a story to explore.
-
Don't care what they do so long as
You get to actually control your character in a battle
Your not punished for not picking a particular class which might have useful skills or abilities your chosen class doesn't have i.e. Human noble origin in the first.
The sex scenes actually look like sex scenes.
Since we're talking about the game swagger jacking Mass Effect that it's look is equal to Mass Effect.
-
Improved graphics would be a plus, but I'll gladly sacrifice polished graphics if it means we can have as awesome and immersive experience as DAO was.
Seriously, people complained about DA's graphics looking "outdated" but I was having so much fun I didn't give a flying crap.
-
The more I hear about it the more disappointed I feel. I thought DAO was okay, but the direction this one seems to be headed sounds lame to me. Bring on KotOR III! Screw that MMO noise!

GameInformer has more tidbits for us:
http://gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2010/07/09/five-facts-about-hawke-in-dragon-age-ii.aspx1. Hawke is voiced.
2. Hawke is human.
3. Hawke didn't survive the blight, he escaped it.
4. Hawke is the Champion of Kirkwall (in the Free Marches)
5. Hawke drives the story.Geh, I'm getting those Mass Effect vibes again. But there are some good things to be gleaned from this. One is finding out that s/he's from Lothering, which immediately got my attention. We all know what happened to Lothering, so that should be an interesting story aspect. Also the confirmation that the Free Marches will be a setting, which is good. Expand from Ferelden.
Finally I'm fine with a character-driven story. There are only so many times one can "defeat the Big Giant Evil", it gets old. Focusing on a character's life? Fine with me. (just pleeeeaaase don't put Paragon/Renegade shit in it!)
They're gradually releasing more info here:
http://gameinformer.com/p/dragonage2.aspxMy only "bullshit" to that blurb is the "spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate establishes an identity of its own." NOT WHEN IT SOUNDS LIKE MEDIEVAL MASS EFFECT!!

I thought I was the only one who thought the same.

Graphics are important, naturally (you don't want the game to look like shit), but having Pixar-quality isn't necessary when the story/game mechanics more than make up for it.
More tidbits dredged from greywardens.com:
- We will see Flemeth.
- They're using the ME dialogue wheel, but instead of "colors" you have options like "agressive", "flirty" or "sarcastic."
- It's a framed narrative structure, meaning that it's being told in the perspective of someone from the future.
- DA2 begins as the events of Origins are still taking place, so we may see some DAO events.
- No morality meter.
- There will be banter and friendships. (no say on romances yet)
- NO PARAGON/RENEGADE axis. As confirmed by David Gaider!
- Hawke is NOT Morrigan's God-child.
- PC combat is still much the same.
- You can still choose warrior, rogue, or mage.
Okay, the no Paragon/Renegade stuff is a HUGE weight off my shoulders. And while I'm still not a fan of the dialogue wheel, at least we get to judge our responses on tone rather than good/neutral/bad.
I'm still waiting on that romance confirmation, Bioware . . . . .
Oh, and here's a hilarious little Shakespearean quote from David Gaider on the forums:
To be or not to be
Whether 'tis nobler in the RPG to suffer
The slings and arrows of developer whims
Or to take arms against a wheel of dialogue
And, by opposing, play not. -
I just started playing the first one. <.<
Here's hoping I can get a second playthrough before the sequel comes out. Fat chance since there are other games I'd like to play as well.

My sentiments exactly. I was predicting they were steering toward more Mass Effect-like game mechanics, but I'm glad stuff like P/R and a less simplistic dialogue wheel will be used. The return of character banter and friendships hopefully is a clue that there will be more dialogue options and fleshed out companions. If they go for romances, hopefully those will be fleshed out as well.

greywardens.com has more tidbits from a German magazine:
http://greywardens.com/2010/07/dragon-age-2-preview-and-new-screenshots/#more-8976Looks like we've got some chara confirmations:
Hawke: The choice of male or female hero is the main character of Dragon Age 2, and leads the player through the 10-year history.
Bethany: Hawkes sister is a magician and supports her brother in the battle with fire spells.
Cassandra: The Inquisitor has a burning interest in the hero did Hawkes. (? I think they either got a bad trans or a glitch)
Varric: The dwarf Hawke has accompanied on his travels and is the storyteller in Dragon Age 2nd
Flemeth: The mighty shapeshifts and mother of Morrigan from Dragon Age: Origins is also in Dragon Age 2 again with the party.Holy crap, is Flemeth a party member!?
-
Bleh, since part of the story is alongside the first, I wonder if it'll affect the game at all if you chose to fight Flemeth in Origins. And I honestly have to wonder how bad the enemies are going to be if Flemeth is a party member. @_@
-
Varric is the dwarf in the concept art apparently: “The GI article implies that Varric is narrating about Lothering. He is talking to the Seeker, who wants to know “how Hawke escaped from Lothering, and Varric reluctantly tells the tale. At least, he tells the version he wants the Seeker to hear.” She wants to know because she wants to understand Hawke’s actions. The world is on the brink of war, and the article implies Hawke is somehow related to this. Then it shifts to Hawke’s POV.
Edit, regarding multiple narrators: Also part of the article: “Narrators with unique insights into the events in question tell the tale of his [/her, meaning Hawke] past adventures.” Mark Darrah says it is similar to The Usual Suspects in this regard.”I am beginning to like this narration premise and what it is leading to - a new war. Perhaps, there will be another story to tell after DA2.
Cassandra: The Inquisitor has a burning interest in the hero did Hawkes. (? I think they either got a bad trans or a glitch)
Yup, a mistake. Should be:
The female inquisitor has a burning interest in the heroic deeds of Hawke.
Holy crap, is Flemeth a party member!?
2 out of 4 - and set.
-
I have a dragon shape-shifter on my side!???
Game over Darkspawn.
-
I'm not sure that the Darkspawn are our main villains (although they'll ALWAYS be available to fight).
I'm betting Flemeth is the white-haired mage with the horns in the concept art.
-
If the game starts out in Origins, then it seems like it's a good guess that Flemeth would join your party a certain period of time after origins ended otherwise it looks kinda weird when you can return to her hut anytime in Origins and she's there.
edit: also yeah….anyone think Flemeth'll be romancable....?
-
Uh . . . . that's actually one scenario I wouldn't want. Flemeth rocks but . . . . . I dunno if most of us can get that "old lady" image out of our heads.
-

Yeah….that was mostly part of the joke. It seemed like almost every other joke in Dragon Age was how old and hideous Flemeth was.
Anyway, i'm also curious about his sister being a magician. So does that mean she went to the tower or something else?
-

Well she does need to jump into new body's every so often so there's your loophole.

Just got this months Gameinformer. Cover is sick.

holy shit of all places to find this one of mah fav games gets sequelled. ima so getting that

http://geeksofdoom.com/GoD/img/2010/07/2010-07-10-dragonage2.jpgYou got Gameinformer!? It is now your duty, good ser, to report on everything they have about DA2 in there.
Starting NOW.
-
Soooo . . . apparently it's been confirmed. The white-haired dragon lady in the concept art and the Gameinformer cover is indeed Flemeth.
She's apparently got two aspects: the seductress and the hag. She showed our Wardens the hag in Origins, now I guess we're getting the seductress?

Win. Flemeth as a seductress…..
Do you have the link to the white hair lady picture?
-
She's on the cover of Gameinformer here:
http://gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2010/07/08/7718298August_5F00_Cover_5F00_Revealed.aspxIt's gonna be pretty hard to get that "hag" image out of my head . . . .
-
Thanks! Yea it was cruel of bioware to show us the hag before the seductress…....bad mental images
-
Oh well i guess bioware is aiming on the milf/granny people. I wonder what the release date will be.
-
I believe the tentative release date is March 2011.
There are a lot of people who are apprehensive about that, saying it's too soon after the first game (October 2009) for them to have enough time and effort to make a truly sequel-worthy game ala Mass Effect 2. But we'll see if a year and a half is enough.
-
Bioware is a skilled enough developer. Who knows they might even have started production of the second before the first was done.
-
Some quotes from the Game Informer preview
-
Because of the larger span of time that encompasses the game's story players can see the result of their decisions sooner for example saving a city will allow the city and it's inhabitants to carry on for future parts of the city. While not saving the city will cause it to be destroyed you'll see how it's destruction affects the region over the course of the game.
-
Party members won't abandon you if their approval rating is low following up on that character bonuses can still be unlocked regardless of your teammates approval rating.
-
All classes can now combine certain abilities with one another ex: Warrior sundering an enemy's armor while a rogue uses backstab, also all three classes will include more specializations.
-
Decisions made in Origins can be carried over regardless if the platform you played Origins on and Dragon Age 2 aren't the same platform.
-
Morrigan's story was hinted at not being finished but not confirmed as being in the game.
-
Magic spells now have finishing moves
-
