Yeah, I'm with Stephen on this one. It's a bit underdeveloped, but that's one of my favorite systems. I like the fact that there are some choices to be made each time you hit a new city–go ahead and dump high-quality materials across the board to level everything up equally, or hold on to your best stuff until you get a 3x Multiplier on Weapons or Armor. It's also created some decisions that have been frustrating, but in a fun way, like choosing between spending all of my money over-equipping my favorite characters or trying to spread the wealth.

I started playing this yesterday. imo it's much darker feeling compared to the other tales games. Upgrading weapons is a little easier than I would like it to be. I love the characters (especially Elize and Teepo) and story so far.
-
Heh, Teepo has been the one thing I can't stand so far.
-

He is real obnoxious. some of the scenes he was in were pretty funny tho
-
Actually I kind of like that. Gives you the freedom to customize your options somewhat – I'm usually the guy who wants better weapons/armor sooner than expensive accessories that are only useful in specific conditions. There's the downside of not automatically having that "ooh look at all the shiny new stuff" feeling when you get to a new town, but if you've been saving up your materials you can pretty much recreate that by cashing them all in then.
The "ooh new stuff" feeling being gone is a big deal to me and artificially trying to create it that way doesn't work for me. There's no excitement in finding out what new wares might be for sale, and it takes all uniqueness away from any given town's shops. For example, in a snowy city you would expect to find gear and accessories related to the ice element, or relating to monsters local to the area, or that would characterize that town (warm furs and pelts for example). The choice between what type of gear etc. you want to focus on should be balanced by their price, and that should be sufficient. I hate the fact that not only do I have to micro-manage skills, leveling, and combat, but now shops as well.

I would much, MUCH rather use those materials for item synthesis and open up depth that way. Not in leveling up global shops.

Teepo sucks, Elise sucks. Every Tales game has to be hijacked by some 8-year-old baby.
-
Just got it the other day. About 10 hours in, and I must say I'm enjoying myself. The cast is one of the most immediately likable I've seen since Vesperia. I actually enjoy the battle system. I think linking is kinda fun, even if some links are practically broken.
I can definitely see empty overworld complaint. A shame really, although it doesn't bother me too much. Same thing with the "fetch-questy" side quests. I can see why it would bother people, but I personally do it for the loot. As long as the rewards are worth it, I'll slog though anything.
Bottom Line: I really enjoy the game. A solid 8/10 from me.
-
Late enough in the game I guess I should start using spoilers:
! Good SCOTT this game takes too long to establish its villains. I've got the full squad together and just now did Milla decide to let everybody know there's this group called Exodus that supposedly is trying to kill her despite not having been seen since, like, the third area. It's not a huge issue, but it means most of the storyline has been devoted to just getting back to one city to destroy one thing instead of revealing all this interesting backstory, which MILLA KNEW THE WHOLE TIME.
! Also, Alvin, please hurry up and get your inevitable betrayal/return out of the way. I'm sure it will be good, but it's not going to be a surprise. -
About 10 hours into Xillia, and I'm liking it so far. I find it much better than Graces f(even the combat, yes, you heard that right).

B-but Elise is moe.
-
So, I'm not quite done yet, but…uh...
This might be my favorite Tales Of game.
This is going to be uncomfortable.
-
Now I'm not savvy enough to speak about gameplay comparison between xillia(since I haven't played it) and the rest but it wouldn't surprise me if people like the title more than others just based on the characters.
At least for me that's one of the big draws of tales games, if I care enough about the characters and their little skits that's a pretty strong motivator.
As much as I like how the combat in graces feels I haven't finished the game yet partly because I'm still burned out on the series but also partly because I didn't really care much for the party. -

(probably cus of Elize)

! Without spoiling anything, the enemy situation never does completely straighten out the way we expected, but I liked the way it worked anyways.
-
Finished the main story. It's got issues, yes, and the ending is rather abrupt/weak for a pretty nicely plotted game, but I really, really enjoyed it.
More thoughts later after I've had some time to process (and work on the platinum), but for some reason, the blandness of the environments and repetitiveness of combat–particularly in enemy models--just didn't get to me like I thought it would at first.
-
I think I'm on the final stretch
! i'm just after the second fight with the psychotic silver haired girl

Second half, sure.
Final stretch, no.
-
oh..ok then. man I forgot how long the tales of games are (especially symphonia)
-
Been trying to get into Xillia multiple times now. Dunno why but I just can't feel it. Just hoping that the game will pick up a bit soon (only about 2 hours in so a long way to go.)
-
Played Tales of Xillia Co-op starting with Millia.
games actually cool, takes awhile to get used to the art system, but so far! most anooying bosses are the Mines boss and Ivar..especially Ivar spam attacks to the point you can get stuck and get KOed instantly
-
Just finished Xillia.
Pretty much worse then Graces in every conceivable way bar story(and even then it's only because Grace's story & characters are so unutterably bad).
Battle system's worse, town locations are tiny and reused, and just like Graces characters go on like it's an episode of Dawson's Creek, though thankfully not nearly as much. Plus the game is pretty easy - I've never been able to polish off every Colosseum challenge as they've appeared before….until now. About to try the extra dungeon boss, maybe he'll put up a bit of a fight.Hopefully Xillia 2 will be better.

Finally someone who agrees with me haha. And yes Xillia 2 is supposedly WAY better. I never played because, after disliking 1 so much, I could not invest myself in a sequel.
-
FInished Tales of Xillia in Co-op
it was a ok game, looking forward to the sequel next year.the only thing i didnt like was the Arte system , it was a bit difficult to summon Arcane/Mystic arts control wise, and especially when AI decide to do other things instead of attack -
I'm perfectly fine with being the outlier on this one. I've gotten so tired of being the guy who hates the thing everyone likes that it's nice, for once, to be the guy who loves the thing everyone hates.
-
Oh yeah, two things that I did really like - getting very early the fast move system - which is one of the best and most comprehensive systems I've ever seen, including as it does different entrances to towns & dungeons etc as well as being usable at any time excepting forced scripting events, and being able to jump off of any ladder no matter how high.
If there's one thing this game absolutely nails its dispelling movement tedium. Just a shame the places you were moving between weren't better…
-
Just completed the extra dungeon.
Couldn't believe (probably should have known) that it's entirely reused map content.
Was the budget for this game 30p or something -

looking at these screenshots of the Symphonia pack coming out of TGS makes it abundantly clear that they haven't touched up a single fucking asset in that game. HD, indeed…
-
The hair and face is the only thing different that's noticeable
-
It runs in 16:9 and at 720p; whether or not they redid the assets, that's an improvement (and sadly enough to stamp "HD" on there). But considering I'd have bought this even without any changes, it doesn't matter a lot to me.
-
Vesperia is the one I really want to play, and it was even ported to the ps3 with extra content… yet here it is 4 years later and they STILL refuse to bring it over.
I don't get it.
-
Still refuse? Vesperia 360 did get a localization though, and a pretty nice one too. Shame that the PS3 version never made it out of Japan, but it's not like 360 version was an incomplete game or anything.
-
Well I think the logic is they're porting the Japan-exclusive PS2 version of Symphonia so why aren't they doing the Japan-exclusive PS3 version of Vesperia? I mean Symphonia PS2 has way less extra content than Vesperia PS3, compared to their respective western releases.
-
It's for Symphonia's 10th Anniversary, isn't it? I suppose maybe we can hope that when Vesperia's 10th comes along we could have a chance.
It would be more work for them to do Vesperia PS3 though, since it has more extra content to translate/voice. Symphonia is easy enough for them, I think they're not even gonna voice the extra stuff in the dub version?

It being for a system I don't own makes it incredibly incomplete.

I just got Symphonia HD today and I've been playing it for a little while. It feels strangely nostalgic given the hundred+ hours I put into this when it first came out. Here are some thoughts/impressions so far:
-When the game first loaded up, it detected my saves for Graces F, Vesperia, and Xillia. After thanking me profusely, the game awarded me a bunch of costume titles from past games. Colette dressed as Rita is hilarious and cute at the same time, whereas Raine with a Pascal outfit is just too weird. Even though it totally makes sense from a character standpoint it just feels WRONG haha. The others I have so far are okay, like Yuri for Lloyd. I still haven't gotten some of my playable characters so I don't know what else there is.
-They kept the opening song from the Gamecube version (not the one they used for the PS2 version which this is a port of), which is great IMO because it's a better song.
-Visually the game does not really look very pretty. We all knew from footage that they didn't bother redoing textures, but a lot of other stuff (like elemental weakness icons in the bestiary) also look low-res. The animated cutscenes look good in HD but even there you can tell the quality is not amazing. Oh well.
-This game is going to be absolute hell to platinum. There is a trophy for completing the collector's book which is like… just no. Forget the obvious tedious task of getting all those infernal figurines -- there are items that require different event choices (of which there are now more in this version), and by my calculations a minimum of 6 playthroughs would be required to cover them all. And some require a lot of forethought meaning you can screw up and miss some, most notably by having the wrong affection level with certain characters (which is an invisible stat that you cannot verify). There's also a trophy for a full bestiary. I just hope I don't have to Magic Lens them all (or even worse, Magic Lens with Raine...) for it to count.
-Knight of Ratatosk (Dawn of the New World) doesn't seem playable from the start, maybe you have to beat Symphonia first? Oh well, I have zero intention of playing it anyway.
-The disc art is cool and it came with a laminated postcard thing commemorating the 10th anniversary of the game with thanks and signatures from all the staff. It felt like a neat touch.

Hmm, it seems like there's not a whole lot to get someone who already owns the game to buy this version, unless you are a die-hard Tales fan, I guess.
-
Yeah I'm about as big a Tales fan as you could find and I'm not planning on buying it (still playing too many of the older ones to do one I've already beaten…)
-

Well it's not like I was listing added content. The PS2 version had a fair amount of new events, costumes, moves, and some new enemies too. But nothing as major as Vesperia.
-
Started playing Xillia again and (spoilering for courtesy)
! it's strikingly similar to Symphonia you know with 2 worlds separated one side is dying the other is prospering and unaffected a group stations itself on the other world in order to save their own.
-
Except Symphonia has content, and life, and feeling :D
I'm past the halfway point in my Symphonia HD run and it's really fun despite not looking that much better. I really like that they fixed the battle camera so that with 2+ actual humans playing, they all stay on screen. Also the skits being more "dynamic" is okay (the boxes shake or grow/shrink) if a little forced. I realized the second game appears as a second "disk" in the game menu when launching from XMB, not that I plan on ever launching it.
Oh also Sheena with a Judith costume FTW.
-
I've been playing Tales of Graces F lately, it's pretty different! It took some getting used to but I've
! Just landed on Fodra and the game is really fun, I love the dualizing system and building up my titles etc, ahh!
-
Yeah, the mechanics of graces are my favourite in any tales game. Just a shame the characters and story are so bad. Asbel has to be one of the worst protagonists in the history of jrpgs.
-
The BATTLE mechanics of Graces are really interesting… dualization is a system WAY overwrought and overcomplicated, which is okay if you just lightly dabble in it but hellish if you're actually trying to dualize all the qualities / items / bonuses. I've also already ranted about this but the title system is also overly tedious. You have parallel level gaining now, and micro-managing is almost useless since the most efficient way to get strong is to spread your SP over all the lowest-level titles first (since the cost to benefit ratio is extremely favorable) and then evenly bring them all up to the next level.
But yeah it's fun. I didn't mind the story, like who plays Tales games for their gripping unpredictable stories? Characters aren't great but... they have Manlik and Pascal so I forgive the rest of the cast.
-
I doubt this was the PS4 title Baba mentioned they were looking into, but still it's good to see a new title coming along.
-

Yeah, its namco so they'll want to squeeze the last drops out of their ps3 tales engine. I guess this one is going to be zestria?
-
Kind of hilarious, we got another 2 trademarks issued on nov 1.
Let's count them all:Tales of Favorite
Tales of Link
Tales of Memories
Tales of Bibliotheca
Tales of Zestoria
Tales of Creales
Tales of Catastora
Tales of Asteria (the 2 new ones)
Tales of KanadeThose are all known recent ones from the last 6 months. Someone want to hold an avatar bet on which one they're going to use :P?
-
Picked up Xillia on a Black Friday deal and so far I'm really enjoying it, if only for the fact that it robs this gameplay mechanic I've been working on extensively from me. ;_; I'm still really early in (just in the third screen of the first field area) and Thanksgiving Break is over so I won't finish it up till much later but so far I like it. Granted, I am aware of some of its more grating flaws. But for now it's not too bad yet.

Tales of Bibliotheca sounds amazing.
The world is in danger. One woman stands against evil. At the library.

Sounds greenlight worthy! The game economy also revolves around the closed library. You lend out a bunch of books and when you go adventuring you close the library. All the people unable to turn them in now have to pay fees since they're running late. It's basically every money generation game system based on property owning. Wait a bit go to X, cash in just with added spin of being able to feel like an evil library girl.
A friend of mine also seriously thought that one of the title names was Tales of Castratia…
-
If it wasn't for Tales of Hearts we might of had Tales of Harmonia.
Oh well.
