It's almost that time again, the annual Arlong Park Character Tournament. And this year, it's going to be even bigger, better, and other words that start with "b"!

If you were here last year, you know the basics already and are pretty much good to go. If you're new, prepare for a ride as your favorite One Piece characters (and some you probably don't recognize at all) duke it out in a fan community series of 1 on 1 battles of popularity!

I know you're all chomping at the bit to start the nomination process and get your favorites into the game.

Well, sorry, we're changing things up, so you don't get to.

Don't worry, you'll like these changes.

This year, in order to try and be inclusive to as many of Oda's wonderful characters as possible, we're doing our best to include darn near everyone! Rather than having a nomination process, we're instead hosting a prodigious preliminary round with a whopping 320 candidates!

320 candidates!… 32 preliminary rounds, each with 10 contestants, the top four most beloved move on.
After that the first round will then begin, just like last year…. Unnamed characters allowed like "Dreadlock Chain-Chomp", "Nipple Hammer", and "Pwngoat." group candidates Examples include Johnny and Yosaku, the Square Sisters, and the Kung Fu Dugongs

Ah yes, the specifics. If you really care, it'll be talked about on the podcast.

The organizing (character selection and match draws and such) is already finished.

No. The prelims are 32 matches (1 month), then it's the same as last year (127 matches, or about 4 months). It'll end about the same time it ended last year, as well.

Long story short, April is going to be a brutal month. 192 characters will be eliminated.

Right. The first round last year started the beginning of May. It'll be the same, this year. The difference should only be a few days one way or the other.

It sounds a lot huger, but its only going to be one month longer, and that should be a pretty crazy month. It really should end right around the same time as last year.

Yeah, that's my mistake. It's about a week into May this year, April 24th last year.

Hancock has a decent shot at passing if the preliminary was fair. She's pretty much a mid-tier when it comes to popularity. However with this system, the votes are more split and it's easier for negative campaigning to have an effect. Which is kinda unfair.

Man this tournament will be brutal. I still remember all the fighting there was last year let alone the battles this new system will bring.

In cases where we feel there are multiple characters who, aside from differences in design, are fairly non-distinct, interchangeable, and fulfill the exact same role in the story, they will be partnered into a team, and count as a single candidate.

I guess Coby won't be either then

Vivi's a low-tier character that shouldn't be in the running. That's the advantage of this system. Cleans up a lot of muck.

The prelim will be fair, and there won't be too many heavies in any given starter round (probably). Its a pretty well balanced roster, the shoe elves and the underwear gnomes assured us of that.

Plus there's still a few details we haven't told you guys yet.

You think we wouldn't make the tournament fair? :blink:

We'll be using multiple votes for the preliminary round. Each person can vote for as many or as few of the options as they like. The top 4 will qualify.

Nope, beause then you can start predicting the flow of the tourney and have a good idea of who is going to beat who in advance.

Shuffling it every round makes things much more interesting, and gives the more minor characters a chance to get through a round or two.

Not really. In the prelims multiple votes will be allowed. Meaning you can vote for as many characters in the match as you want to. It is heavily recommended though to vote for at max. 4 characters since the top 4 move forward while the remaining six get eliminated.

On a related note, I suggest that nobody votes for a tie during the preliminary round because in each preliminary match there will definitely only be four characters guys that will move forward to the first round. If we're having a tie that doesn't give us a clear top 4 we will have a system in place to determine the winners. So don't aim for a tie guys.

"Coin toss" is a nice way of saying "Russian Roulette". Any tied characters will be handed a gun, with only one bullet…

No, I won't toss a coin at all and will just decide on my own who moves forward while telling you it was a coins decision. And whoever has a problem with that will be banned. Don't believe me? Take a look at last years tournament when people thought I was just joking about banning half the forum just because I could. Kuhahahahahaha :devil:

People will also be tempted to leave there votes to the last minute to try and get their borderline favorites across.
