Patience is a virtue.
Just finished the first five volumes:
[hide]I consider it crossing the line for Light Yagami when he killed Naomi, but I still believe Guts to be a hero despite taking a young girl hostage (this is the short version of my analysis).
I was certain that the elf was going to be smashed in the first chapter.
"I don't mind using power to decide things." Griffith looked menacing when he said that.
I honestly thought Theresia was going to die. Credit goes to the Count for at least resisting that urge.
Interesting how there's more monsters in the present than in the past.
I predict that Guts will never have peace of mind until the complete destruction of God Hand (and their servants) has been achieved.
Will put in more after the next few volumes (when I have time).
Also, I kind of feel bad that I'll never be that good. Kind of sucks, but what can you do?[/hide]

I blasted my way through this. Damn should've savoured it more. I wanted to see Elfheim and what'll happen there, so I couldn't stop reading. But alas it was for nothing.

I am gonna reread everything now in a slower tempo.

Liked the flashback a lot, the relationship between Griffith and Guts, the elf humor, the crazy religion talk. in short it's a great manga.

I don't like a lot of comedy in my Berserk. It's nice to have a lighter side every once in a while to balance out the utter bleakness of the story, but sometimes I think it just detracts from the story, especially when Guts decided to allow an entire troupe to follow him. The dark and depressing side is what I really loved about Berserk and that just sort of got pushed into a corner behind the rather bland and shouneny 'light-hearted journey' feel it grew. That's not to say it's bad at all. I still love it more than many current manga. I just have not enjoyed the turn it's taken.

Yeah, now that you say it, it's kinda true that after griffith's return the manga felt a little lighter. I also didn't like the concept of a 'magic armor', Gut's always fought his way through monsters with his rage and own power. Now it's like "hey, I need to use that power".

And the berserk/rage thing who always was there is now an imaginary chained fox (I don't have to say what this made me think about…)

And Oh forgot to say how I loved the pirate sea battle, wished to see something like that in a certain pirate manga.

All in all, it's a great manga.

The Gambino complex, for instance just magically dissapeared too.

We already have Griffith who's reduced to a god, with no personality whatsoever, Caska who's reduced to a child with no personality whatsoever.

So I hope things will get better after Elfheim, when Caska will be healed.

Beast Of Darkness. It was suppose to represent him having a sense of control of himself. I see it as a brilliant way of presenting it, it's more a portrait than a caricature, it lets the readers relate more to what the character is experiencing in a much more detailed understanding. The Gambino complex will never disappear, it is repressed. Guts is to preoccupied with fighting all this time for it to even pop out.

Yes, we are told that it takes a giant toll on Guts body and that Guts could unwillingly kill a companion while using it. A writer can tell me how a characters big power abuse could have had a negative consequence if the sun had been blue and pink frogs boogeyed through the forest while chipmunks smoked weed all he wants. Until the armor either kills someone Guts cares about or rips his brain apart it will keep being a cheap power-up.

The beast inside him grows stronger and hungers inside him even more. And now we find out that it's getting even harder to control. It's extremely apparent, the curse of the armor is a real and legitimate threat. Every time Guts uses it, while he isn't outright massacring allies he is drawing closer and closer to the edge of doing that. It's intentional by Miura and has been hinted at for quite a bit. If it were not for a clever trump card that he set up way in advance, Miura would have written himself into a corner with it because the situation keeps deteriorating to the next level. You can not like it but the way the author has been executing it makes it anything but a cheap power up.

The armor also makes it way too easy to deal with the B.O.D. The beast was a personification of Guts' pain and anguish, chipping away at his sanity, which was great. The armor, however, took that personification and turned it into a face that can be punched. All of Guts' inner conflicts were reduced to a status effect that the party's healer can remove.

This. Even with the Berserker armor, Guts still seems small in comparison to the Godhand.

I don't know, when a manga character tells you how dangerous it is to use some power, do you take their word for it, or do you actually wanna see it happen. Did you believe the Kaio-ken could kill Goku? Do you think the gears will ever cripple Luffy?
Expected negative consequences should occasionally arise. Otherwise, what was the point of worrying about them in the first place? If Guts uses the armour a dozen times and both he and everyone else always come out of it alive and relatively uninjured, then it obviously isn't as dangerous as we were led to believe.

Except in this case and unlike those other cases you mentioned, the negative effects of the power-up are not only apparent but are getting worse with usage.

IF that happened, it would be cheap. But I'm debating the present here. And at present, it's an extremely vicious double-edged weapon.

When Zord found out Guts was wearing the armor he talked to the skull knights about making guts follow his path the 冥府魔道(path of the death or something cant really find the right word to translate this)
