lol, i've always thought tht is a movie
-
All you babies need to go out and read Devilman.
RIGHT THE FUCK NOW.
-
@Monkey:
lol, i've always thought tht is a movie
I'm pretty sure you think Akira is just a movie too huh.
-
hey i'm new to this anime/manga shit
-
No offense but a poll was pointless.
-
lol yeah, man its only good if people actually vote ahem
-
I really don't think any manga is the number one/greatest/etc. I tend to treat all manga I read and like equally. Same thing goes with anime.
-
P R E A C H
yea i agree ^

It's hard to say "greatest" because most manga can claim to be that in some way or another. I think Astro Boy, being the first (?) is likely the only manga that is heir to the throne of "greatest".
-
There are different ways to define "greatest." The best selling manga? The most influential manga? Genre-starting manga? The most critically acclaimed manga? Personal favorite?
So many ways. Personally, I think that Astro Boy is probably the most important manga series of all time and everything about the medium owes itself in one way or another to it. BUT, I think that One Piece is currently the best manga being produced and I, personally, find it to be better than Astro Boy and Dragon Ball and Akira and Sailor Moon all the other big name mangas.
And I thought Death Note was overrated. But that's just me.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.
Okay no one has to post anymore; we're done here.
Why didn't the thread end here?
-
Hey where is all good ones? Like Naruto?
-
Wait isn't this mainly a One Piece dedicated forum! Hence the name arlong park!
Err i think the poll results so far speaks for itself!
-
@Deltron:
Why didn't the thread end here?
Seriously, I don't know. I just checked out the trailer and it looks like the most epic shit ever created.
-
Most of the things on that list aren't actually FINISHED, and excepting JoJo and Dragonball, most of them are from within the last 10 years, AND they're almost all shonen titles. None of them qualify, manga has a far greater ange than just shonen, entertaining though it may be. And given that there's thousands upon thousands of manga… yeah. pretty shallow to make a "Greatest Manga of all time" and limit it to only 9 current titles. I loves me some One Piece, Dragonball and Berserk, But Dragonball has a weak second half and Berserk and One Piece are nowhere near done yet, (and Berserk may never reach its end) so they're not even a finished story yet. Can't judge. (And Death Note has a TERRIBLE second half...)
I'll agree with Nausicaa due to how much it accomplishes in a mere 4 volumes, or Akira for the sheer detail of the art, or... anything Tezuka did, because that guy produced like 83 million pages of art and pretty much created the genre. His prolific output, pioneering techniques, and innovative redefinitions of genres earned him such titles as "the father of manga" and "the god of manga". How can you argue with THE GOD OF MANGA?
My personal vote would go to Eagle though, thats some amazing stuff right there. (Its about the first Japanese-American president.) Or maybe Lone Wolf and Cub. Or Outlanders. Or Ranma 1/2. (not really) Or Nodame Contabile... Or Rurouni Kenshin. Or...
Really, the point is, its an exceedingly narrow and shallow list that has no idea of what exists outside of Cartoon Network.

There is the "Other" option…
-
I hate these kinds of threads…seriously I do.

As good as Atom was, it's far from the first manga ever.
…and you all seriously need to read Devilman. It's a fucking masterpiece.
-
This thread is based upon an individual's taste.
Anything else is just weak.
-
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.
Okay no one has to post anymore; we're done here.
What?! That's not how you spell "Berserk!"
-
The greatest manga of all time would be an epic 3 way tie: Berserk, JJBA and Ashita no Joe.
-
…and you all seriously need to read Devilman. It's a fucking masterpiece.
I already know a lot about Devilman but honestly as someone haunted by celestial gazes as I am, I'm not sure if I could get through it.
I have wanted to read Violence Jack and Cyborg 009 though for the curiosity of how good manga in the distant past was compared to now.
And Astro Boy wasn't the first? What qualifies?
-

The Nausicaa movie is a sickly shriveled up balloon next to the manga.
-
The greatest manga of all time is Gintama.
-
Chuck Norris VS Everyone from naruto
-
One Piece is easily the greatest manga ever made!!!!!!! DB can fuck off !!!!!!
-
And Astro Boy wasn't the first? What qualifies?
Even if Astro Boy wasn't the first it still (probably) is the most important manga ever.
-

They call this biting the hand that feeds you.
-
Why is Death Note, and Full Metal Alchemist even in this poll?
-
If your guess is the same as mine for the same reasons Hunter X Hunter & Slam Dunk are on that list.
-
^Are you fucking kidding me?? Slam Dunk had the best selling manga volume of ALL TIME until recently when OP passed it, and that was ONLY because the company produced MORE copies of the OP TPB. SD is a fucking LEGEND only comparable to Dragonball in its legacy and the standard it set for shonen series. SD and Dragonball are the reason shonen fighting and sports are the two most popular manga genres in Japan today. THINK before you type!
This poll is completely biased towards shonen actiony bullshit. Most of the good stuff isnt the generic fighting stuff, but meh…out of all these Slam Dunk is definitely the best! It MADE a fucking sport popular in a country it was unknown and unpopular in!!
Not to mention started most of the shonen trends we see today"
Cocky-smartass show off
Love triangles in action series
Goofy/insulting nicknames for characters in the series(Bushy brow, etc)
The only time I've seen a cocky-loner perfect pretty boy type done WELL!
@SeriusReader:Hey where is all good ones? Like Naruto?
This in combination with your avatar made me laugh so friggin hard!XDD
Kudos to everyone who ignored DeathNote on this poll…
Really, the point is, its an exceedingly narrow and shallow list that has no idea of what exists outside of Cartoon Network.
Scratch that. +10 kudos for YOU!
Tetsuwom Atom is basically the manga that made manga what it became/is. It's not the first but it was the first that wasnt a pale imitation of western art styles and storytelling.
-
I already know a lot about Devilman but honestly as someone haunted by celestial gazes as I am, I'm not sure if I could get through it.
Devilman isn't all that scary, to be honest. It's violent, yes, but not in a "demons are gonna get me in my sleep" kind of way. It starts off typical shounen-actiony, and then that shifts into a rapid spiral of depression as the story progresses.
But seriously, it is a masterpiece. After I actually read it, I finally understood why Nagai considers it to be his greatest work.
I have wanted to read Violence Jack and Cyborg 009 though for the curiosity of how good manga in the distant past was compared to now.
You won't get anywhere near enough out of Violence Jack without reading Devilman first. It's a direct sequel(nowhere near as good, though).
As for Cyborg 009, it is good. Though out of Ishinomori's manga/anime works, I prefer Kikaider and Skullman… though I assume you've already seen the Kikaider anime.
Its end... Christ. That has broken the mind of more than one person I've seen it with.
And Astro Boy wasn't the first? What qualifies?
Atom wasn't even Tezuka's first manga, much less the first manga ever. Hell, a lot of people actually credit fucking HOKUSAI as being the first mangaka.

Still don't change my opinion of it.
-
Hunter X Hunter also owns, you suck dude.
-
I voted for HxH since togashi is the mangaka I admire
-
Nausicaa, because of my strange fascination with Namulith and its complex plot. The movie version of the manga was pretty bad IMO.
-

Eh that's not what I mean. I mean even reading the word "Satan" makes me squeamish if I see it enough times, and given how the series is centered around the occult and possession it may be beyond me to get through it.
I mean I got uncomfortable when the Narrator referred to Genesic GaoGaiGar as the "God" of Destruction. >_>
But seriously, it is a masterpiece. After I actually read it, I finally understood why Nagai considers it to be his greatest work.
Sounds promising.
As for Cyborg 009, it is good. Though out of Ishinomori's manga/anime works, I prefer Kikaider and Skullman… though I assume you've already seen the Kikaider anime.
The name didn't ring any bells, but I noticed a chance comment mentioning a "guitar" so now I know what you mean.
I've only see a few shots of the Kikaider anime and mistook it for Cyborg 009…in fact I watched 009 partly to see the scene with Joe and his guitar! I need to go look for that anime now...
But yeah, I liked the 009 anime, and The Skull Man too except for the Vader thing. I definitely need to check out the Ishinomori stories I haven't seen yet.
-
Nausicaa, because of my strange fascination with Namulith and its complex plot. The movie version of the manga was pretty bad IMO.
Nausicaä was a movie first tho. So you can't really say "the movie version the manga". But I have never seen the movie myself. The comic is my all time favourite. At least of Japanese comics.
Still, for the sake of originality, I'm going to pick another title. Lemme me see… Castle of the Dragon.
-
I want to read Nausicaa but I just can't find it online anywhere.
-
I want to read Nausicaa but since it's not on onemanga it's not online anywhere.
Honestly, what's the matter with kids to-day?
-

False.
The only reason the manga exists is because no one would let Miyazaki make a movie that wasn't based off of a manga.
-
Ah, you are right. I got things mixed up. It was written in so long span of time… there where 2 volumes out by the time of the movie? Or how was it?
I think I'm going to sound like an asshole but if you want to read it you can always buy the volumes too.
-
I want to read Nausicaa but I just can't find it online anywhere.
Buy it, it's relatively short and worth every penny.

Namulith owns so fucking hard.
-
wow, Im surprised im the only one who voted jojo.
seriously, the entire jojo series cover so many concepts, its not just ZA WARUDO WRRYYYY at all, I think araki has touched much more concepts and styles in his battles than what many artists have tried to do.
