Ask them what a "chatty cathy" is.
-
I've heard Wayne do some very minor (nameless) roles in the show, but nothing else. Mike… eh, wouldn't be surprised if he did a minor role.
But they probably do know some things on the One Piece production, so...
-
Hmm. Well that's disappointing they won't have any officials from the company there, but you can at least ask the actors a few questions, anyway. Unfortunately, I don't really watch the dub so I can't come up with any acting-related questions beyond "have they seen the original Japanese version" (which I doubt very much for professional reasons), or some really boring questions about working with voice directors and the like, since I'm interested in that area of work. But regardless, good luck there, have fun, bring us back any juicy tidbits. :P

Not OP related, but I have question that we should ask Mike Pollock. Ask him if he'll be playing Eggman in future Sonic games, since Eggmans VA in the Adventure games died recently =(
-
I thought it was the person who sang Eggman's theme in Sonic Adventure 2 that died
-
hey will u ask if the other two have some upcoming roles, like maybe smoker or bon clay. maybe wayne could do mr.2
-
In light of the fact that the 40th dub episode will be entitled "Roguetown", new question: what the hell is it with the splicing and skipping?
-
Well, it looks like the most important questions are already asked.

They've left some violent stuff slide on One Piece on the same calibur as Shaman King. But true TMNT is more violent than both of them.
That would be because TMNT is made in america, and they tend to let american animation get away with more on their block of shows. Doesnt make much sense.

I'm guessing their rationale is that parents are more wary of shows imported, hence the overcautious censorship…

Anything of note happen?

Hey guys. I'm back and still recovering. The panel was all right, and the voice actors are all really cool people. Unfortunately, it wasn't as yielding as we might have liked, being that they were only the actors, and not the industry.
I'm currently pulling together a mini report on the things we did find out, and once that's together, I'll post it, possibly on the main site if the staff would let me, or else just here.
-
Cant wait to read it. Hopefully you asked about TMNT/OP thing. I'd love to hear the response
-
As far as the edits go, they gave us the impression that toei forced a lot of decisions down their throats. o.o
-
So..when is this going to happen? When are you askin' 'em?
-
Already did happen ^__^
-
Well? Where are they replies then?

I wouldn't be surprised. Toei's responsible for a lot of anime manhandlings in the past (Knights of the Zodiac was mostly their doing, Sailor Moon's last series won't get a release here because they're holding off the rights). Still, 4K!DS is still at fault for being pushovers. It would also explain a lot of the ludicrous edits like changing "Marine" to "Navy".
-
Well, I'm not sure that we will have many good answers to our questions. We are asking the voice actors. People who are paid to read lines written on a piece of paper, not the people who decide what to put on that piece of paper.
It's good that they came and tried to answer questions, but I don't think they really have much of a say in the scripts. They really can't improvise much, as they have to pay attention to speaking space.
(Nothing against the voice actors, just saying that they aren't the ones to ask the questions that we want answers to.)
-
Hmmm yeah I didnt go to the panel (My friends and I slept in) Ginny told me that Nami and Zoro's voice actors were pretty cool.
-
Sorry this is taking so long guys. I've been wanting to sit down with madgophermm5 (who was also there and asked questions) to do this report, unfortunately, work's been working him like a dog, and we haven't had a chance. For the moment, I'll give you guys a quick run down.
Onigumo was right. They were just the voice actors. They couldn't answer a lot of our questions about what the exact reason for things being done was. Another problem with this panel is that because voices from Yugi Oh were there, the discussion sometimes steered away from One Piece (despite it being a One Piece panel)
A couple things I can tell you though is that they are aware of the edits. The voice of Zoro had seen some of the original first, and thought it was very different, but since they're putting it on Saturday morning cartoons, there's only so much they can do. They definitely sympathized with us, and while they said no uncuts are in progress at the moment, they thought there most likely would be ones in the future.
I mentioned Sanji's voice, and while they couldn't shed any light on WHY he was chosen, Nami's voice acknowledged that it did not seem appropriate for the character. When asked about Luffy and Usopp's voices, they mentioned how Luffy's voice had an extremely good range as an actress, and that she's really hot. There was no real comment about Usopp, except they thought the actress was doing a good job.
I got the impression that they understood a lot of the issues, but this is their employment on the line here. If they said too much about them disliking the way a scene was edited, or the way a certain actor or actress was directed to act, they're basically bashing their boss. So they had to be careful about what they say.
But they were all very cool people, I enjoyed talking to them. Marc Diraison, the voice of Zolo, even signed the autograph for me spelling it Zoro. (And I didn't ask him to.) I think they have mad respect for the original version. They just don't have any control over the edits and direction.
A more detailed report will follow, but again…don't expect big answers. They were not their's to give.
-
I wish I was there.
-
Dude! They do seem to hate Moos voice! I got a new respect for these guys.
-
Where was Animenext? Seeing real anime voice actors would be tight for me.
-
i really want to meet those voice actors now because they have respect for the original and they know good and bad voices when they see one.
-
The VAs all sound like really cool people. Got any pictures of them, Ginny?
Marc Diraison, the voice of Zolo, even signed the autograph for me spelling it Zoro. (And I didn't ask him to.)
That's real cool and kinda surprising.
There was no real comment about Usopp, except they thought the actress was doing a good job.
Err, it's a guy playing Usopp, Jason Griffith.
I mentioned Sanji's voice, and while they couldn't shed any light on WHY he was chosen, Nami's voice acknowledged that it did not seem appropriate for the character.
Ha, so they hate Moo's Sanji too.
I really think Zoro and Nami's VAs are probably big fans of the Japanese version. You could even tell with the passion they put into their lines in the dub. Moo, on the other hand you could tell just wants to get payed.
-
I have new respect for the poor souls who work for 4Kids…
-
Some people still say that Zoro and Nami's voice actors suck though. Ofcourse I don't think so, but just saying….

I like Nami's vioce. Her voice actor is the best. And Zoro's…I dunno...I don't think he catches Zoro's masculinity. He's a good voice actor, though.

I dunno. Both actors really seem like they can't act at all. But, then again, it is hard trying to fit the movement of the lips to english lip movements. They get emotions down, at least. Unlike LUFFY. The voice for Luffy is the worst one, without a doubt. Usopp's makes me laugh because it's so awful, and I am starting to wrap my head around Sanji's, but Luffy's never shows any EMOTION. After watching the original (I watched the dub first - poor little me) I realized how amazing the original Luffy was. And how bad ours is.
ANYWAY, I'm glad to find out that at least somebody in 4Kids actually cares. Even if they don't have any power over what happens. :(
-
Wow, I have a whole new level of respect now for the Zoro and Nami VA's. First off, they acknowledge the original version. They don't bitch about it, which I understand, but when that guy signed "Zoro" that was just cool. I am also happy to know that they hate Moo's voice. Score one for me, but what mad it seem better was that they said it was out of character, which is further proof that they appreciate the original a litttle bit.

I think Zoro's voice is pretty good, Nami's on the other hand…I think it sounds really generic and she doesn't sound 18 at all
But after reading that report, I'd have to say that both rule as people, cool to hear that they have respect for the original and don't like Moo's Sanji.
-
She did admit that in order to play nami's role, she had to force her voice, and that it wasn't a natural tone for her.
-
Hmmm but is any of that surprising? Aside from DBZ's narcissistic cast I've never heard of VA's that WANT to steer away from the original and piss people off. That's why I've always been apathetic about poor voices. They may not be appropriate but the actors and actresses are doing the best they can with what they have.
-
Dark Shinobi - Unfortunately, no, I didn't get their pictures (I wanted to kick myself after for not bringing my camera!) …But there were Anime Next officials taking pics that will probably be put up on the website! Also, if you're curious...
That's them. They're both pretty attractive if you ask me XD! But I will keep an eye out for the photos taken at the panel. And, woops…I meant actor when it came to Usopp. ^_^* They really didn't say much about him at all. They spoke more about Luffy's actress (which wasn't very much either.)

I think Omae really put this well. Even if you're not a fan of the voice actor/actress, or of the way the voice was directed/came out (And remember - the actor or actress doesn't decide to do the accents. The director decides.) I extremely doubt that anyone TRIES to make a bad dub, or to purposely screw up a character. (Although I know, I know, Sanji has made us wonder!) While hard work doesn't always show, Marc and Kerry are definitely working their hardest, and IMHO, it's paying off as much as it can. Maybe not to everyone (everyone's entitled to their opinion!) But at the very least, know that they care about the original.
In a few hours I'm off for the weekend. I hope to have the full report up next week, and maybe I can bug some of my AN Staffer friends for the panel pictures to go along with it - I'll see what I can do.
Oh, one more random tidbit about the gang - They all like Family Guy.

I'm liking these guys more and more.
I liked Zoro's VA, At first it didn't seem right to me, But after a while I grew to like it. Probally only didn't like it at first because I was too used to the Raws voice actor.~
I thought Nami's voice actor fit her well since the begining, I can't wait to hear her during Arlong arc, That'll be the time she shines I bet~ -
And, woops…I meant actor when it came to Usopp. * They really didn't say much about him at all. They spoke more about Luffy's actress (which wasn't very much either.)
Darn….
Anyway, thanks for that Seta. ^^ I wish I could have spoken to them too, they seem nice.
-
Thanks for the report Seta Ginny!
Voice actors are almost always very cool people. I don't really put a lot of blame on them. As I have said, it's the casting director that was out looking for a certain thing, got what he wanted, and told the VAs to do their job. I'm glad to know that these guys were aware of the original (and were made MORE aware of it. ;)) And that they didn't like Moo as Sanji either. XD
I think 4Kids is going to be a Comic-Con too (they always are). I don't know if any VAs will be there, I'll check the programming when the schedule comes out. -
I hear the naruto dub is going to be mostly edit free and they'll only edit out moving blood, and the cussing. the rest'll be kept. its not really fair one piece doesn't get this treatment.
heh, I feel sorry that those people have to work like that >.< being forced to voice for a ruined version of a show they respect. oh well

I know. BTW, the edits thing was actually just speculation. It has been confirmed that the dub will contain no name changes, and that they'll be using the Japanese music "for the most part" (whatever that means).
I love (read: hate) how ShoPro can actually respect the musical score in Naruto (they said it in an interview), and then we have Al Kahn saying "Oh, the music? Yeah, it's not American enough, so we have to cut it." How can music be too "Japanese"?
As for today's episode. They just spliced four episodes into one. K, wtf.

It's like Jesus and the loaves of bread, only in reverse and instead of Jesus we have
SatanAl Kahn. :3I wish One Piece was getting the treatment that Naruto is getting though. T~T I wonder what the VAs will sound like?

wow really surprising report. I feel pitty for nami's and zoro's voice actors. always have to see those bad cuts and edits. also i dont know what the diretcors at 4kids see. they have voice atcors proboly with amazing talent(except david moo)then they put to crap.
