The schedule has been released for Anime Next, and there is going to be a 4Kids One Piece panel. I'm already formulating the questions and comments I would like to ask, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions? Immature questions and OMGHATZ0RZ DIE remarks will obviously not be used.

Edit - It appears, unfortunately, the panel does not have industry reps, but only voice actors (two of whom are not in One Piece) However, being that all these people have worked for 4Kids as actors, we will still try to get as much info from them as we can!

I'd ask how they will handle Bon Clay/Alabasta. Not to mention the DVDs (Zolo in the subs, etc.)

I trust you to ask the right questions but I'll chuck the ones that are important to me in here anyway.
My main one is whether the dub and sub will be separate releases. I truely hope so since the dub will have hammer-guns that I really don't want when I'm trying to enjoy the subbed version.
Other than that I guess I want to know if Funi is doing the dvds (don't they have a contract to do all of the 4kids dvds?) and whether there will be special editions/series boxes.

I really want to know if 4Kids is ever going to change the rap opening. Or are they going to just add in more lines as more crewmembers join?

EGX, Ginny, if you would, please ask about all the random and unwarranted edits (Hammer-guns, super soakers, etc.)

Ask them if One Piece is getting good ratings. Also ask them why they feel the need to merge episodes.

My first question…
The show TMNT is on right before One Piece and has scenes like:
The Shredder crused underneath a water tower, (The Shredder Strikes part 2-episode 11)
The Shredder beheaded, (Return to New York Part 3 - episode 23)
The Shredder coming back with the line "You merely seperated my head from the rest of my body!" (Secret Origins part 2 or 3 - episode 34)
Splinter impaled by Leo's sword in a dream, (You see the back of the Ghi rise...) (The Darkness within - episode 67)
Bishop with an implied impaling on a meathook, (Bishops Gambit - episode 76)
Biship saying the line "No Survivors..." (Don't remember the situation, didn't find episode name/number...)
and in the season finale, we were led to belive for a while that Leo was impaled with a sword. (Exodus part 2 episode 78)
In addition, the turtles use Japanese concepts like "Bushido."

(EDIT: I ADDED THE EPISODE TITLE & NUMBERS OF THE INCIDENTS, SO THEY COULD BE REFERENCED IF NEED BE, USING TVTOME!)

Yet in One Piece, it is seems that you go to great pains to remove anything that might seem Japanese to the viewers (aka the riceballs), as well as the thought that somebody might have been hurt or killed (No matter how short that time might be.) Why do these two shows that are on the same channel and time slot seem to have drastically different editing standards?

My second question:
Many fans of the show feel that some characters like Sanji and Ussop had inappropriate voices. What standards do you use when selecting a voice actor for a character?

My third question:
When deciding to bring a Japanese Anime over and dubbing it, how much do you research the series to see what sort of editing might need to be done?

My last question:
The music in the dubbed series had different music than the orginal. Why do you replace the original music?

Thanks for your suggestions everyone…particularly Onigumo! My boyfriend had pointed out to me that Shredder gets decapitated in TMNT...and yet...look at all the edits in One Piece. The other TMNT references you brought up will be helpful as well. That is an EXCELLENT point, we'll be sure to bring it up.

Also, two of the voice actors are going to be there. Zoro's and Nami's (who are probably the two better ones.) If anyone has comments or questions for them, as well...shoot.

Well, for the VAs I would ask if either of them researched their character before voicing them.

Don't piss them off on the more violence on TMNT thing though, One Piece still gets away with more violence than any of their other anime shows. Anyways a question to ask the actors who play Nami and Zoro is what do they think of David Moo (Nah! Just kiddin!) Ask them if they like voicing that character and ask them if they hope to get better.

Well, actually, I hope to not piss them off at all ^_^ I think it's fair to ask these questions if they're worded properly and stated in a polite, non-accusatory manner. I'd like to know WHY it's okay to show violence in an American produced cartoon, but not a Japanese one. And I honestly think the answer will probably have to do more with the audience's paranoia then company policy. In any case, it'll be interesting to hear what they say.

Most VAs don't research characters they do voices for, because they provide voices for lots and lots of projects, and that, paired with having another job to help pay the bills, doesn't leave very much time to "study" characters. So, they audition and they give their interpretation of the characters based off what the casting directors give them (pictures, a short rundown of who they are, etc) and the casting director bases them on whether or not the voice is suitable for the character.

Zoro and Nami's VAs are gonna be there, cool. They're probably not bringing along Luffy's or Usopp's or David Moo since if did, it'd turn into a bloodbath.

Still, as much as I hate that voice, Usopp and Sanji have gotten even more screwed over.

… No questions from me. I'd have to restrain myself from hurting something, and I imagine my questions would reflect that. Besides, Onigumo would have taken all of mine anyway. =/

Yeah, I think David Moo knows better than to come to an anime con. ^_^* From what I know, he's pretty disliked, even outside One Piece. (Namely for Xelloss in Slayers, but I could be wrong.)

I'm looking foward to meeting Zoro's voice! He's done Gutz (Gatz…Guts...Whichever) from Berserk and from what I heard of it, did a nice job. I've enjoyed his Zoro. Nami's voice I like as well, although I still am not 100% with her. But considering the fact that she is a fairly new voice actress, and is doing better than almost the entire cast...She's pretty good.

I'd be curious to see if they are familar with the original version. I remember back in 97, reading an interview with some of the DiC Sailor Moon cast, and one of them said they were actually shown the original version before dubbing. I'd like to hear what 4Kids does.

Hmm, I never saw Slayers Next or Try dubbed, so I can't really say. To be fair, though..I think part of the problem is the directing. I mean, he wouldn't just do an accent without being told to. I REALLY want to know what they were smokin-I mean, what made them choose that accent.

Ginny, if you would, tell Willems and Brown they do a good job as Zoro and Nami. (Nami's and Zoro's dub voices are pretty good, in my opinion. They could use a bit of work, but they're WAY better than that of Sanji, Usopp, and Luffy's. x_x)

Also, DON'T tell them about AP if you can avoid it. I have pride in the forums, but we're a direct affiliate of K-F, and if they find about K-F…

We're in deep shit.

That, and I'd ask him how they'll deal with Smoker, and Eneru saying "I am God!". I really hope they don't try to make it look like they're answering my question. Not that I'll be there, but if I get the chance, I'll give him the subbie opinion of the travesty that is the dubbed One Piece.

Hey, at least they left Bellemere dead. One Piece has had it's own eyebrow raising moments as well. (Shanks arm being bitten off, Zeff's leg being riped off, Some guns were left in with not much of a alteration, Nojiko getting shot.) Which is leages more of what I can say to Yu-gi-oh or such.

They did leave her dead? Wow, that's an improvement from last I had heard. (I stopped watching after the episode where Nami dived in to save Zoro, but I had been told she wasn't really dead…just locked in Arlong's dungeon =P.) But yeah, I know Yugi Oh and Shaman King got shafted too. It's really a shame.

While looking at the future arcs in One Piece, like Alabasta and Skypeia, which have a lot to do with war, religion, and of course violence. Will you still edit out all these huge events in One Piece and show this on Saturday mornings, or will you show One Piece on Toonami only instead?

Well I don't watch the dub all too often, but it's great they'll be taking some questions. I don't have much to add question wise as I think all the important ones have already been stated. I agree that Zoro's and Nami's VAs should be complimented on their jobs though. I like Zoro's voice and Nami's while sometimes annoying is not at all bad. Oh, and on the voice acting, please do ask why they felt a top notch cook needed to sound like some lowlife from Brooklyn. I'd never eat at a restaurant if I knew the chef sounded like that (I'd be worried that I'm eating someone he just wacked or something).

We didn't know Shredder was a robot at the time, It was just a mystery how his headless body got up and retrieved its head. That fact wasn't revealed for a couple of episodes later. (I think it was the following season.)

But another question I would like to know is Why can't they use the words "dead" or "killed" but can say "Perish" or "Didn't/won't survive"?

Do you watch 4Kids? They NEVER say "Perish". That's MUCH too strong a word for them. They just kinda…hint it. Well when they don't cover up by "she's in the hospital. Burn in the Shadow Realm!"

Like "Now my daddy's gone!" but they never say "perish" or anything.

How crowded do you think the panel will be with fans complaints? And Here My questions:

1. Why do they edit out english words?

Just curious on that one.

2. Why do they refer to them as Mermen and Not Fish-man?

Viz got that part right atleast, and Oda said in the SBS that Mermen and Fish-men are 2 different things.

3. Why they remove Arlong being a racist towards human?

I have noithing to say.

4. How will they handle the 2 Mini-stories?

Since they seem to get into the action parts quicker, and since these parts lack action, and one doesn't seem coincide with an encounter with the Straw Hats, Will they be skipped?

and Finally one that hasn't been adress yet by a fan.

5. Will they be releasing the Movies that were in Japan (Example: The Pokemon Movies) or make/commision their own (Ala Yu-Gi-Oh), and How will they be handled?

A Straight to DVD or theatrical release, Edits mades, and all that stuff.

I certainly do not want to see a OP movie made by 4Kids, similar to the YGO movie that came out last fall. It'd be.. more scary to watch than the dub.

I think everyone posted the questions I wanted to ask. Has the question of "Why does 4Kids edit so many unnecessary scenes (erasing words from shirts and so on) if it's so 'expensive' to do so?" been brought up yet?

EDIT: Ah, I wanted to know if there's any chance that the english We Are would have a chance of replacing the rap anytime soon.. but that might've been semi-answered in the recent Kahn interview.

Yes, I know that anime (Including La Blue Girl and Battle Royale) is for kids in Japan. I have stated that MANY times on this site. The reason that it is for kids in Japan is due to the fact that Japanese kids have brains.
