what's wrong with that? pirate lingo. big deal.
I think scalawags sounds pretty stupid.
He's an old man and he's being condescending towards younger folks, I don't see a problem.

thank you. scalawags? seriously people who whine about that are just bored and haven't got anything better to bitch about.

As much as I want to enjoy Viz's translation, it's the little things like this that bug me.
Since someone is going to come crying about not complaining about the little things and how we should enjoy holding it and blah blah White-Knight blah, remember that "the little things" add up and too much of it becomes a problem.

the ones crying and complaining are people like you, dude.
I mean for God's sakes, if 'scalawags' bothers you because it doesn't sound cool enough, think about how many 72-year-olds you know who say 'cool' things. NONE.
If the way viz translates "the little things" as you say adds up over time, remember there are free scanlations online translated by people who get off on 'shit' and 'fuck' and enjoy throwing those words in. Perhaps you find that more appropriate or acceptable.
And your point is?
yeah i edited my post to elaborate. my point can be found there.
I know that viz hasn't batted a thousand on one piece but getting bothered over 'scalawags' is just too much.
It's 'okay' to bitch about Zoro being turned into Zolo (one frickin letter difference that doesn't change anything about the character)
It's 'okay' to bitch about Kami Eneru as opposed to God Eneru (guess the three letters just looks better than five, and they mean the same thing)
It's 'okay' to bitch about translating certain attack names for characters.
It's NOT OKAY to complain about 'scalawags.' Of course you do have the ability to do so
oh my god whitebeard used pirate lingo THE FLOW OF THE STORY IS RUINED
Charming.
I'm saying it's an annoyance, and when all the annoyances add up it gets bad. "The little things add up".
Yeah, I say it's important because the vernacular used in a story sets it's tone and style. A character named Zolo doesn't give off the same tone as a character named Zoro. Words peppered here and their accumulate and become the story's style.
I distinctly remember (and please do correct me if I'm wrong) Oda saying that his pirates weren't the type to run around saying "shiver me timbers" and the like. It wasn't the "style" he was going for.
So Whitebeard, an old pirate, said "scalawags." Big deal.
What do you expect him to call them? "Punkass bitches"? Go read scanlations then.

How about "fools"?

It still pisses me off, its not like they got the name wrong of some minor character we only see once. Zoro is one of the story's main protagonists.
Wait a second, are they actually dropping Bleach from the magazine? Somebody mentioned it in the comments section of this page talking about Viz's offering online previews of Nora, Bakuman, and Toriko for subscribers only.

Wow, I'd like to know where he said this. Telling all the people that say "the pirates in One Piece don't act like pirates" that this was the point.
Also, "punks" or "fools" would have been a better word.
It still pisses me off, its not like they got the name wrong of some minor character we only see once. Zoro is one of the story's main protagonists.
again, how does being called zolo affect his character? personality? fighting style? contributions to the story? any IMPORTANT things? No.
Ahahaha this is probably the dumbest complaint yet. Legit things like Zoro, Kami, Oh Come My Way, yeah let's complain.
Scalawags? XD Yeah, not at all a big deal. Fools would've been fine. Punks wouldn't be any better. You're just splitting hairs looking for something to complain about.
Also, the name Zolo vs. Zoro hardly changes his character. Best counter argument I can think of to support my opinion is that Oda originally planned to name Sanji Naruto, but changed it when the manga Naruto started.
That wouldn't have changed Sanji's character at all - just the name we're used to hearing.
Besides, Zolo wasn't Viz's fault. It was 4kids. He was called Zoro for the first 4 volumes, until they were forced to change. There are even old SJ issues where they continue calling him Zoro and simply state that he would be Zolo in the anime. But because of some legal crap the parent company pulled, Viz was forced to make the switch. I mean think about it - would Viz really have changed Zoro's name to Zolo unless they had to? Heck they kept Kuririn and Katsuya Jonouchi in place of Krillin and Joey Wheeler even though Dragon Ball and Yu-Gi-Oh! animes were much more well-known than One Piece.
again, how does being called zolo affect his character? personality? fighting style? contributions to the story? any IMPORTANT things? No.
It sounds dumb and it seems completely pointless.
Zoro's name is even written in English in the comic itself, so there is no excuse.
No it doesn't affect anything major, it just pisses me off.

It DOESN'T sound dumb to anyone hearing that name and identifying it to the character for the first time (like me). When I first got into one piece I didn't know it was Zoro and it didn't make me think the character was dumb. And easter eggs exist everywhere.
It doesn't affect anything major, just angers you. Exactly. Big frickin' deal. What are you gonna do, stop reading it? Because of an L as opposed to an R?
"Zolo," "Kami Eneru," "Oh Come My Way," "Gum-Gum," and other such things DO NOT TAKE AWAY from the core of what One Piece is, and I certainly will never be able to understand why these things have people so up in arms…some make the argument that VIZ ought to retain certain japanese elements like attack names, use the word God, curse more, and basically to keep as close to the japanese format and style as possible.
To this I say (and I think I'm not the only one) that I don't like One Piece because it is japanese. I don't like One Piece because it is a manga/anime or that it was created in Japan. I like it for the story and none of these things VIZ does and has done detracted it from me, someone who isn't a manga or anime fan.
Why is "old buddy" a legit complaint that has pretty much become a new meme, but "scalawags" a nitpicky and dumb thing to complain about?
Viz fans need to calm down.

'Kami' and 'Oh come my way', annoy people because it is Viz's half assed attempt at censorship.
How can you not understand how people could be a little miffed at this?

the stuff they're censoring is stuff I don't care about, and they don't take away from the story. Kami means God, and oh come my way pertains only to Mr. 2 and the other okamas who take up SO MUCH OF THE ONE PIECE STORYLINE…....
This seems to be how the censorship thing works:
1. "True" One Piece fans want to pay money only for completely literal translations that match their expectations no matter what.
2. VIZ, a company that publishes One Piece and other manga, gears One Piece towards teenagers 13 +
3. VIZ decides that American kids and teens who will buy One Piece might get rubbed the wrong way if they throw in "God" (not me, I'd be fine if they went on with using God) and "Gay way" and feel that those terms in the manga might detract from sales and steer people from thinking one piece is a pirate adventure to a whole different story concept.
4. VIZ translates a different way.
5. Suddenly VIZ is a homophobic nutjob of a company that attempts to censor everything under the sun.
I love One Piece and I don't give a damn about "Kami" or "Oh Come My Way" because A) I KNOW already what they mean or are supposed to mean, and B) I understand that I'm paying money for an American company to continue to produce a saga I love. C) I know that if I want literal and completely "uncensored" One Piece manga, its online for free.
what's the old buddy thing? haven't heard that one before.
In FUNi's simulcasts, as in the Viz manga, the pirates call Whitebeard Pops, from oyasan. Last week, however, the subs had them constantly calling out ''Old Buddy!!''. Now this was the episode where Whitebeard gets stabbed and is accused of selling out his allies, so there were quite a lot of ''Old Buddy!!''s being thrown around.

ah…...i always thought that his crew and 'sons' were the only ones to call him pops.

Stop right there, and shut it.

Pretty sure that was what they had the allies calling Whitey, not his "sons".
I actually just thought of that since I just remembered Ace screaming out ''Oyaji!'' a few times. I'm pretty sure everyone, Whitebeard or ally, just uses ''Pops'' in the Viz manga, though.
Now I'm confused.
I always thought the "old buddy" thing was the translator playing a joke. I like to think Funimation has more than one translator and maybe that week he felt like screwing with the audience.
I say this because the following episode the New World Allies called him Pops (which they've been doing the whole time).
Still, it's yet another sign that FUNi's subs badly need another round or two of QC. They don't look very professonal as-is.

There are a few grammar/spelling errors that I've seen as well. If it were fansubs I would almost expect it but, coming from FUNimation, its a bit unprofessional. Then again, they don't have much time to do this in.
I like that I complain, and suddenly I have it.
yays
Holy shit, besides the preview of that gawdawful Picaso thing, it's just four manga showing in SJ right now.
Ultimo is less gay this month, but is abruptly stupid confusing.
I know I should not be adding more fuel to the Viz editing fire, but I would like to voice my opinion.
The main thing that pisses me off is the name changes. Oh Come My Way and Kami (though this particular case is kind of annoying and takes away the effect of God Eneru) do not bother me that much. However, changing Zoro to Zolo is frankly degrading to Oda (and to a lesser extent: Lougetown to Rougetown). As a writer myself, I would be extremely angered if the names of my characters were changed. I put a decent amount of thought into what I want my characters to be named. I think it's insulting to Oda for them to change a characters name.
Now, I am aware that it is appropriate to translate certain terms, but names are different. We can romanticize names, but when Oda writes the name in English for all to see it really is inexcusable. Blackbeard's name is clearly spelled Teach and not Teech, which means Viz is going to have to edit art.
Hopefully, one day, we can get an edition of One Piece that is unedited. I know I can just read it as Zoro or God Eneru (which I do, by the way), but Zolo (and Teech) are a slap in the face to Oda for his hard work.
Thanks for reading.
please, apologize to me for making me read your drivel over what may or may not offend Oda
@dirt:
please, apologize to me for making me read your drivel over what may or may not offend Oda
jeez, you didn't have to read it if you didn't want to.
but you don't know if it's going to be bad unless you read it
still waiting for the apology
You could've stopped reading the moment it mentioned the complaining about name changes
I'm pretty sure Palocka made a similar post about why changing names was bad in this topic.
Except it was good and a great read.
when he first mentions name changes, he doesn't mention that it's degrading and insulting Oda, and that it's completely inexcusable because the poster with nothing published thinks super duper hard on what he names his own character, and gawdforbid that Oda's character's names be changed in VIZ's translations on account of those meddling 4kids
Sorry for making you read it (though you didn't have to).
I don't think Oda is offended by it, I'm just saying it's offensive to him. Although it seems like it, I'm not complaining about the names. I don't like it, but I know nothing is going to change after fifty-five volumes and I've accepted that. Just wanted to voice my opinion and a discussion that was going on (though I know everyone is tired of it, seeing as it crops up every other page it seems).
EDIT: Listen, you don't have to be an ass about it. I stated my opinion, and that's that. I'm passionate about my work, sorry, sue me.
(though you didn't have to).

I think you need to edit your post, did you mean it offends you?
Everyone here complains too much about stupid shit. Such is the fate of a anime/manga forum, eh?
It can't be stopped people. Don't even try. U_U
Good thing I tend to avoid this topic after dan2026 post.
I don't really care that much to be honest (though my post makes it seem that way). I'm only offended because I would not my characters being changed like that (but I'm not offended). If I had a character named Johnny or Bobby, but in the translations his name was John or Bob, while pretty much the same, is not the name of the character.

someone makes sense.

That just sounds like a fan interpreting the article as saying "Bleach" will be out when it doesn't really say. I can only see it being taken out for a speed-up.
