It only gets one chapter per month so it's already on the very low end of the spectrum for Viz.

Well, I can't see Bo-bo-bo being very popular here. Too many references to classic action/adventure Jump series' that just aren't well known in America, if they're known at all. Not to mention the random humor that typifies many gag manga. It doesn't seem like the sort of thing that Americans would like much. I mean, I think the anime was fairly popular on Toonami, but I don't know how long that lasted for, and the anime's script was massively altered so that it would appeal to Americans. The manga wasn't, so it probably never really caught on, and therefore Viz doesn't want to push it. I think they only put it in the magazine because it was on Toonami, and it ended on Toonami about six months after they put it in, so the anime bump probably didn't help it.
I'd say that they oughta take Bo-bo-bo and Yu-gi-oh! GX out. Yu-gi-oh's not too popular anymore, and Bo-bo-bo never really was. So they might as well get rid of those and put in series' that people might actually like. Plus, then at least Bo-bo-bo would get its volumes released at a decent pace. But that's not Viz's fault for not caring about anything but Naruto (which IS a problem, don't get me wrong), but in this case, it's because Bo-bo-bo isn't very popular. Now that I think about it, Viz is actually pretty good about release dates, except for unpopular series' or series' in the magazine. Most of their series do come out every two months, I've checked their website. Even Bo-bo-bo probably would too, if it got more chapters in the magazine, but that's when the lack of popularity becomes an issue. Unless it is popular, which would make this another instance of Viz delaying a series' releases for no apparent reason.
-
What about the actual card game? That's the only reason I see GX being in the magazine, its an Ad to go along with the free card and strategy tips in each issue. I've also seen it rank in ICv2's Top 20 Graphic Novels in the past.
I could see them removing Bobo-bo, what with Ultimo premiering in the July issue. Although it could end up like Yu Yu Hakusho and staying in the magazine for no real reason.

@Vegard:
Y'know… Neither of those are any more accurate than the other. The phrase "Buttobase" actually means "To send him flying", but nobody translates it like that because overly literal translations are lame.
I for one would actually prefer "send him flying". It just sounds like something that Luffy would say (and he has literally sent his enemies flying)
The Hell bit could be dealt with fairly easily, assuming they'd even have to change it, which I doubt. But the okama and Amazons would be REALLY pushing the limit. I wouldn't be surprised if proper undergarments ended up shopped onto Amazons, and as to the okama… I dunno how they can get around that. I guess they'll just do what they do for Bon Kurei now? It'll be forced, but it's forced now anyway.
People really need to get over the language, though. Actually being upset over Luffy saying he'd kick Crocodiles "butt" as opposed to his "ass" is simply infantile. Alright, so "Blast it" and "Darn you" can seem pretty glaringly out of place, but it shouldn't affect the overall tone of the series, which is for the most part pretty intense when it's supposed to be. Just because the characters swear alot doesn't make One Piece any more "adult", and just because they don't swear doesn't make the series kiddy, the tone is still the same.
I didn't read the Viz manga, so may I ask; what did they do to Bon Kurei? Did they avoid any mention of his Okamaness or translate it faithfully?
And I agree about the language part. As long as they don't put random puns into the dialogue, its fine if they try to avoid swearing. But in the case of harmless words such as 'ass' , 'shit' and 'hell' there is really no reason to omit them.

This month's shonen jump contains:
! 5 chapters of Naruto, pein's attack begins, kakashi vs. pein
! 1 chapter of Bobobo
! 4 chapters of One Piece, luffy vs. crocodile 2nd fight
! 2 chapters of Yu Yu Hakasho, hiei years part 1 and 2
! Part 1 of 2nd chapter of Tegami Bachi
! 3 chapters of Bleach, entering the hollow world hueco mundo, chad and uryu begin their 2 on 2 fight.
! 1 chapter of Yugioh GX, chazz vs. david raab begins. So I wasn't the only one who noticed that they have been doing 4-5 chapters of one piece lately, I guess they really are trying to speed up the process a little. Even if they they go back to the three chapters a month, Robin will be in the crew by the october-november issue, and we will be in the jaya arc. Wow, finally America would have offically moved on past Alabaster.

Okama Way = Oh Come My Way
Okama = SwanI think that's it. They keep in the lines about him being a ''man and woman'', as well as all of his lines about being ''iffy'', so it's not like they're really trying to bury him. You can still tell what's going on with him.

um….so how would they have translated this panel (bottom left corner):
http://www.onemanga.com/One_Piece/156/17/would they have just replaced okama with swan?
-
Alright, what Vivi says is: ''They say he wears makeup and talks like a girl and wears a swan coat that says 'Oh Come My Way' on the back.''

Alright, what Vivi says is: ''They say he wears makeup and talks like a girl and wears a swan coat that says 'Oh Come My Way' on the back.''
Ok, thanks for the info
I take it that they tried to keep the line's overall meaning in tact, but still avoided any mention of the word transvestite or cross-dresser. -
Whats wrong with mentioning cross dresser anyways?
-
What's wrong with showing a stone crucifix? But that didn't stop them from editing one out of Fullmetal Alchemist. People take issues of religion and homosexuality (which are themselves intertwined) very seriously in America. Therefore, to avoid controversy and allow their products to be sold in major bookstores, from which Viz gets more sales and exposure than from comic book stores, Viz censors out anything which people (read: parents) may find objectionable for their target market (read: teenagers and pre-teenagers). As long as there are enough mothers in America who think that cross-dressing is a subject that is inappropriate for 11 year olds, Viz will see a need to pussyfoot around the issue.
-
Got my jump today. Forgive me if this has already been mentioned, but next month is Bobobo-Bo Bo-bobo's last chapter in JUMP. I still clutch firmly to my dream that Bobobo is going to get speed releases in order to reach Shinsetsu Bobobo.
Also, they left "Ground Sekko" as that, instead of translating it "Ground Drying". Was Sekko not a japanese term?
Also also, Tashigi's men mentioned that Nico Robin sunk "Marine Ships". So I guess it's not a totally navy translation after all.
-

That does not sound bad at all, since he does send Croc flying as promised.

Chapters 425-429 + Shippuden Showdown: Naruto's Card Battle [By Katsuya Kazama].
What the hell this card battle thing is…I haven't a clue...
EDIT: One Piece: Alabasta Chapters 50-52 (three chapters)
-
Just 11 more chapters and Alabasta is over and done with.
-
Which can be anywhere from 3-4 issues.
-
Wow, so they dropped it back to three chapters? That's sooooo freakin' annoying especially since Naruto still gets 5 even being so close to Japan? What the heck Viz….OP was finally getting a little boost and they drop it back to 3? Come on, they could've finished Alabasta in 2 more months even if they put just 4 chapters, but dropping it to 3 means at least 3....stupid viz. They can't even give us a semi-decent pace for One Piece...it's really getting rediculous just how slowly it's coming out here.
-
Welp, it was nice while it lasted.
Though I knew once Naruto got back in the magazine it would eventually slow down to this horrible pacing again. =/
-
I can't wait until Naruto ends =P
-
Whats wrong with mentioning cross dresser anyways?
I'll take a stab. Sorry for the long-winded post.
According to many authority figures in this country, "children" are supposed to be "pure" and "innocent." They're not supposed to know about things like crossdressing, yet they probably see more socially "deviant" behavior, sex and violence on TV, print, internet, comics, etc by the age of 12 than they would during the entire length of their actual lives. (I mean socially "deviant" behavior from authority's point of view, not mine. If someone wants to crossdress, not my problem.)
It's just as a society, America cares little about graphic and at times, grotesque displays of violence in media. Yet, if it's sexual or just socially deviant, people get up in arms.
It's a weird double standard. Violence is good, but sexual or social "deviants" (like crossdressers) are bad.
So the American Shonen Jump editors, subconsciously wanting to protect "children" from what is commonly known as "Life," don't directly refer to him as a crossdresser.
My opinion's probably far off from reality, so you're free to ignore it!
-
…which is awful convienant when pretty much 98% of those of us who visit this forum simply aren't old, mature, or ready enough to have kids that they care to raise properly. America is a very religious country and while we don't care much to censore violence if it has something to do with sex, then yes typically we like for our kids to be in their teens before learning about those sorts of things. Then again, we begin to make the assumption that all kids are the same, but that's pretty false.
I was sheltered in my younger years, but at least now in my older age I'm free to choose my actions willingly.
-
Well, Arabasta will be finished by the end of summer, by the looks of it. We've still had 12 chapters over the last three issues, which is about as good a pace as you can hope for.
If they keep that pace up than we can be at Skypiea by the start of next year.
-
No, 3 chapters a month w/ 3 volumes a year is an absolutely terrible pace. Japan gets 4 volumes a year and are already 33 volumes ahead of us…that puts us 11 years behind Japan at the current release rate...and we're getting further and further behind. We fall behind another year every three years. Three years from now, we'll be 12 years behind the Japanese release...with a long-running series like One Piece we should be right up tot he Japanese release just like w/ Naruto...this is done in other countries like Germany...it's really terrible how long Viz is taking to release the manga...and from what I've read US Jump's average reader is 16 years old (median age), so the fact that they're worried about editing for 10 year olds is rediculous.
-
Well, if you want the release to speed up…you've gotta give Viz more money...
-
When was the last time One Piece was on a cover? Was it Early 08?
-
@LC:
Also, they left "Ground Sekko" as that, instead of translating it "Ground Drying". Was Sekko not a japanese term?
"Secco" is an Italian term, which is the language a lot of Crocodile's moves use.
Similar to how Sanji's are French and Robin's are Spanish. They follow a theme which is why generally they're left untranslated and with a little note on the sides saying what it means.
-
I can't give Viz any more money unless I buy manga I don't want or double up on volumes =P I already bought OP 1-20, plus Naruto, Bleach, FMA, Black Cat, Reborn!, DragonBall, RuroKen, ES21, Death Note a couple vizbig Vagabond volumes, D.Gray-Man, HxH, YuYu Hakusho, Yu-Gi-Oh! and some I'm forgetting…XD manga's about all I spend money on, so I've accumulated about 400 volumes over the past 6 years or so...only non-viz ones I think are Fairy Tail and 5 Rave Master volumes...I'll start buying Bakuman if it comes out here...but I can't think of any others right now...
-
It was on the cover of the Dec. 2008 issue. It's not like being on the cover amounts to anything though.
Edit: Viz just annouced another series that's getting an accelerated release, unfortunately it's just Inuyasha.
That's probably just because they want the damn thing finished already. Inuyasha's heyday in America was at least five years ago, wasn't it? And if they were publishing the manga flopped, that means that they've been publishing Inuyasha for about 7 or 8 years and STILL haven't finished it. And since it's not as popular as it was, they just wanna get it done. So they'll finish it as fast as possible and rerelease it, this time unflopped and maybe with a redone translation, so that there'll be a version out there that people may actually buy (many people take flopping very seriously), they'll get some old fans, and that'll be the end of it.
One Piece, on the other hand, Viz apparently wants to actually keep around. So ironically, it's stuck with a horrible release schedule, while Inuyasha, which Viz is desperate to finish, gets faster releases. Hey, at least Inuyasha only gets one volume a month and not three. Though it will STILL take a year and a half. That'd be three years at bimonthly releases like most decently popular Viz manga, which explains why they wanna get rid of it.
-
It's just Viz cleaning their cobwebs sadly. With Rin-Ne starting and wanting to get behind it, they probably finally remembered that they still have IY still running and want to be rid of it.
OP is just trapped: too popular to be removed from the magazine, but not popular enough to get more chapters per issue or "accelerated". That's how it's been for years…but meanwhile, Viz really should at least calm it down with their Naruto obsession already, regardless of where they are.
-
I give Naruto 100 - 150 chapters to end…so roughly 3 years. Since we're only 5 months behind in the US, that means we are almost done with Naruto! =D I mean, for it to be decent, I think Naruto needs a part III as Part II has really gone downhill from Part I, but the way kishi's writing, he's going to end it...he's just going to tie up all the loose ends, make Sasuke a villain and give him his arc at the end where Naruto will fight Sasuke, then have Sasuke die and make Naruto hokage! The END! Then it'll be time for some other series to shine in the US! Bleach isn't really their best choice logically...they could push it up, but we're still only 12 volumes behind japan (about 14 with the chapters from the magazine)....One Piece is their best option (as long as they don't put in crappy edits in the accelration like Naruto got with the Loopy Punch...Viz is good w/ non-magazine titles and generally accurate with others, though the artwork edits are terrible...they really have bad artists do the edits, which is why I can't stand the way they draw towels / more steam / etc....they're crappy artists so you spot the edit a mile away!)
-
@Vongola_Boss_XI:
I think Naruto needs a part III
Didn't anybody learn from Fist Of The North Star 2? or DragonBall GT?
-
Ah, but what if a Part III completely left everything behind and returned to a early Part I feel, minus the Naruto-bashing and Super Emo-Sasuke?
-
Maybe if Japanese writers were fully accepting towards retcons just maybe.
-
How Kishi's writing now? I wouldn't mind seeing it end in 2 years or so…if he could get Part III back to Part I quality, I'd like to see it continue. I mean, honestly I think it makes most sense to show a more adult Naruto in his 20's as a jounin become Hokage...I think it would fit nicely actually...Part I developed Naruto, the hero. Part II developed Sasuke, the villain. Part III could show their clash as Naruto is Hokage of Konoha and Sasuke tries to destroy Konoha....I would also have liked to see more of the outside Ninja world...but again, if it continues like how Part II has been...I'd prefer the quicker ending. I mean it's not bad now it's just....okay, unlike the epic One Piece!('o')/ OK, well I got this month's jump and I could sort of see why they'd leave OP at 3 this month. They could do 3 again next month, 5 the month Luffy beats Croc, and 3 the month after that to end Alabasta and Volume 23, then HOPEFULLY we'll get a 3 volumes / 1 month promo w/ One Piece out of the magazine for AT LEAST Skypiea, if not up to current volumes =D (soooo unlikely haha). Hmmm well Ultimo's replacing Bobobo next month....that makes two monthly Jump (Japan) series in the magazine with Tegami Bachi...I wonder if that's what they'll do from now on? The only Weekly Jump series left are Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, and YuYu Hakusho (ending in 6 months max). So I wonder what's going to replace YuYu in 2010? Could it be Bakuman? Might not be a bad choice, though I'd prefer it to be a SJ Advanced title. All SJ Advanced titles are out of the question (which is good...we don't want them out slower or edited)...unless they bring over another new series it may be the only option (I don't want to see it come out that slow...it should get 3 chapters a month minimum).
-
Screw a Part 3. Kishi needs to remake Part 2 and retcon the mess we have now.
-
i saw at barnes and noble..that one of the tableas had a bunch of vol.44 copies.
is that the recent vol?
and One piece is now scarce here..all I saw was 1,4,7,11,15,and 18and any other series announced for the Viz Big series?
-
Bah, bad phraseology on my part. I meant dropping the plot elements of Part II and starting over in Part III with…out a 20 volume long story arc. Have enough time pass that we can return to the table with a completely different set of cards as opposed to building off of Part II's material.
-
Akatsuki would absolutely HAVE to be gone.
-
is naruto even that popular in america? I remember asking a bunch of kids on different occasions in an anime shop if they watched naruto and they all said "no, that's shows kiddy". They're all into much COOLER things like Bleach and Death Note…..yeeeeeeah. @_@
-
Naruto used to be very popular, however I think it's popular has decreased a lot.
-
Naruto used to be very popular, however I think it's popular has decreased a lot.
It's still really popular, just not at its highest point, just like anything that's a big pop-culture hit. For a certain period of time, usually when something first starts, everyone knows about it and it's everywhere. Then after a while people get over it and move on, and if it's truly popular anymore it's just a fad. "Naruto" is still very popular, although I believe the fact Cartoon Network stopped caring about it and how Shippuden has no new T.V. deal in sight means its popularity has dwindled even moreso than usual.
-
June issue had three chapters of One Piece.
Naruto is still popular, but not as big of a fad as it used to be, thank god, but anime in general is going down in america, but as far as Naruto is concerned, Viz had gone Disney on it and whored it out way to much, so that what they get.
-
Ultimo is starting next issue too. I didn't care much for the preview, and I think SJ makes up this 'Fan-Favorite Preview' crap, however I base this nothing but my own suspicions.
I want Yugioh GX out of the magazine. It's passed it's prime.
YuYu Hakusho is going to finish it's run, and it doesn't have a lot.
Did you guys like that Naruto Card Battle? I could see them making more, it's only a few pages, and Kishi's art really isn't that hard to duplicate. Also, I think it would make the cards more popular.
-
I want Yugioh GX out of the magazine. It's passed it's prime.
I value you opinion but, no, GX stays.
-
Advertising the cards? Or do you actually enjoy it? I liked it in the beginning, it's just gone south to me.
-
I like the GX manga. Its fun to read.

More like the series is just at a stage where it's not as entirely good as it once was.

Thats good because the other Volumes are selling out. I think Volume 14 is getting a 2nd print.
