The thing is by summer they'll be right up with Japan. Either simultaneous release WEEKLY publication release or internet release.
New official Viz media topic V2.

Hmmm… Would they even try to release the 4 Naruto chapters that just came out each month? I could see them doing it, but they'll probably choose the internet. Question is, what will happen to Monthly Jump then? Will they increase One Piece and Bleach's chapters? Will they add in a new series? Or will Viz ultimately say "fuck it" and cancel Jump?
The last one probably wont happen, but I wouldn't be surprised.
@Viz:Well, Naruto is out of the magazine. Let's not even try keeping it and ignore the years before Naruto, it's screwed.
-
They're JUST bringing Letter Bee over in the March issue (which I am SO buying if I can). If they're bringing in two new series' in this year (Waq Waq is coming too), then I doubt that Viz intends to cancel the magazine and move Naruto to an Internet release. Which is arguably bad, because bimonthly volume releases sound very nice, but there's the popularity issue… Either way, Naruto will probably still get 3 chapters a month once it catches up, maybe 4 once in a while to avoid having more then a 5 or so chapter gap between America and Japan. Viz seems to care a bit for the magazine beyond Naruto. A bit. Now if only One Piece volumes were at least trimonthly...
-
They prbly will be. With Naruto and Bleach almost caught up. And YYH being almost over. And They can't speed up Yu-Gi-Oh GX. And Box7 not being popular. One piece will prbly be going by monthly. Since its there only popular series that can actually be bimonthly and in the magazine at the same time. Since its 300 chapters behind.
-
Got the issue today. Good to see Sanji vs. Mr. 2 is over. Also there's a contest "What would you do if you had Goku's tail?" If you win it or something you get the new Dragon Ball DS game. Also there's a Naruto Shippuden game coming out for the PS2. The back of the magazine with the One Piece Funi Dub Season 3 thing is surprisingly… cool. It has Arlong with two sets of teeth in his hands. Might actually start collecting the seasons. They seem to be going on at a fairly decent pace. I'm just worried they'll get canceled.
-

Is it just an announcement or does it include pictures too?

They're actually upping the pace now. After the Third Voyage comes out, Fourth Voyage is coming out about two months after it - as opposed waiting four months.
Me thinks this is a good sign.
-
sigh Well, I can't say Viz isn't losing profit screwing the One Piece fans because of Naruto's popularity, and the 4kids disaster didn't help One Piece at all…
Still, I can't help but think that we can at least do SOMETHING about it...
-
Is it just an announcement or does it include pictures too?
Yes it has pictures of a few fight scenes and of Deidara, Sasori and Chiyo.
-
I'm seriously considering buying the volumes of One Piece as they come out. This is a big thing for me, as I have never bought manga before. I actually bought some manga volumes for the first time ever yesterday, but didn't get OP cause Borders didn't have Volume 1, and to just have a random volume in the middle of the series would drive me nuts.
I'm just worried that they edit the art and take out the cover stories. The volumes keep those, right? I can deal with name changes, strange dialogue once in a while, and the 4kids terms, no matter how lame they are. I'm good at reading stuff as I want. I just don't want them to dumb down the art and images for a younger audience, cause that's not getting the One Piece I want…

Hmmm Accel stateside almost feel stupid but eh.

I own all 19 volumes of Viz's One Piece releases. And they're good buys for the price. To my recollection, there is no art edited or cut. (I believe that Ace's tattoo may have been changed to it's current version though, can someone clarify)… there's nothing toned down violence/sexuality-wise in the art. And the cover stories are intact. Even Oda's interviews and questionnaires are left intact.
... there are a few 4Kids terms and names in there, There isn't any cursing, I think the harshest word they've used is "crap", but the actual translation itself is fine. It's the best way to get the manga in English without resorting to scans. Or you could buy the OP DVDs from FUNimation. Those are also good treatments of the source material.
Hope this helps!
-
Sounds good, I think it'll be nice to actually own the volumes, I just had doubts based on different opinions I read. But that helps a lot, thanks!
-
I hear their are a few art edits in the volumes, but they're are inconsistent. Like Smoker's jacket. But they do edit Loguetown to Roguetown. I heard that Ace's manji tattoo was actually in tact in the volumes with an explanation about it? I'm curious if that's really true, considering Oda even had to change it in the later manga volumes. (something that still ticks me right the fuck off, especially cause manji's are very common in Japan)

Yup, the Loguetown-sign was edited, Smoker's jacket was edited ONCE, but left in japanese after that, and Ace's manji was strangely enough left intact. I was totally expecting them to edit that into the tattoo he has later in the manga and in the anime.
Apart from that, there are no art-edits, though there are a few cases where their translations make me scratch my head a bit, like Sanji stating that "I heard you have to be half-dead to enter it" (referring to the Grand Line, right before they cross Reverse Mountain.) I'm pretty sure what he was supposed to say was "I heard that half the people who try to enter it die", but I suppose it's not that big a deal. -
So with Naruto going out of the magazine. Bleach will be there new cash cow. Thats means one piece will move into Bleaches spot while Bleach moves into Naruto's spot. Im hoping Reborn and D-Grayman and HxH will ever be in the magazine. Since they are popular shounen.
-
Here's the top 25 manga for Fall 2008 with One Piece at 15.
http://www.icv2.com/articles/news/13994.html
That's about two slots up from the Summer.
-
Naruto will be back after a two issue break, though!
-
Im hoping Reborn and D-Grayman and HxH will ever be in the magazine. Since they are popular shounen.
As it is now, I'm having a slightly hard time understanding that line. Do you mean that you hope they'll be put in the magazine, or did you intend to write "I'm hoping Reborn and D-Grayman and HxH will never be in the magazine"?
At least in my case, I hope they won't be put in there, seeing how putting them in SJ would most likely mean a slower release-schedule. At least for DGM, I don't know how the schedule for Reborn and HxH is right now, seeing how I don't read them.
-
Oh shit… SHIT!
Hunter X Hunter is on volume 26 and won't have volume 27 published until March.
Right now Viz has it on a bi-monthly release and it's on volume 24. Holy shit it's gonna catch up VERY soon!
What's going to happen? It's my favorite manga and I'm afraid it's going to get this horrendous shitty release schedule by Viz. I DO know that Volume 25 is out in March though. It's already been translated... I doubt it will go to the magazine though... it's so unpopular here in the states... not to mention the release schedule would suck...
-
I read this over that the Jump website
We’re planning on bringing you more manga way faster. We’ve got a bold plan — SHONEN JUMP Accelerated, and it all starts with your favorite ninja!
Well they seem to be giving this speed up release a name and not something as exclusive as Naruto Nation.
-
So maybe there's the chance it's not exclusive to only Naruto? The way they say it makes me think that they're going to do it to other series … like maybe a manga over thirty volumes behind those released in Japan?
-
If they DO plan to do this, and even assuming it encompasses manga not included in the magazine, what other titles could they be talking about other than ONE PIECE? Sure, it would be kickass to get all of BoBoBo-Bo Bo-BoBo out, and then start up Shinsetsu BoBoBo, but that couldn't possibly happen.
If they do get ONE PIECE an accelerated release schedual, I also hope they can get better editors, or at least ones who can do the series justice (i.e. no 4KIDS terms, pseudo swearing, Zolo, etc.)
-
Slam Dunk is already gone from the magizine, too.
-
Is Slam Dunk popular in America?
-
No, but they'll be giving it a bi-monthly release instead of one volume every five months.
-
Yeah, in April onward. Which means I'll have to probably buy 'em. Dang. Ah well…
-
Accelerated? And of course they're starting with the friggin ninja…what, wasn't Naruto Nation enough? (on the other hand, OP is currently in Alabasta...)
-
Because Naruto makes them money and people like so they want to give them more Naruto.
-
But at the same time, they're burning through their most valuable asset. What do they sell when they can't hit kids for 30 bucks worth of Naruto a month? They really need to line up something that hits demographically very close to Naruto– or maybe "complimentary". I'm sure a fair number of people have a limit on their appetite for shonen, and would tune into something else too.
Viz must feel hugely confident about itself, considering the industry as a whole is scaling back it seems (judging by the huge mess at Tokyopop)
-
They probably aren't expecting huge gains right away with the pace they're using. Who knows though, maybe One Piece will finally speed up.
-
I don't know why they release them so quickly. I guess you can buy them over time, but honestly… who can afford that much manga for one series alone? Ehh... maybe we'll get lucky and Viz will do the same thing for One Piece but with Skypeia/Jaya? I don't know... I guess they could do the Acceleration thing but with Bleach.
-
They couldn't do it with Bleach. Believe it or not, were only about 5 volumes short from Japan. Which is why it's in the magazine now.
-

Well it's not like a situation with DragonBall Z,Pokemon ,& Yu-Gi-Oh.

Viz release of Volume 21 comes out on June 2nd.
-
So it's another 4 month wait, huh? I REALLY hope this doesn't continue after Alabasta. 3 volumes a year for two years in a row…
-
We'll just have to wait and see if they elaborate any further on this "Shonen Jump Accelerated" plan in the coming months. I'm keeping my expectations fairly low, anyone remember SJ Evolution, but I'm beginning to think they just might be planning something for One Piece.
-
Bu-BUMP
Latest issue has 4 chapters of OP.Going up to the beginning of the Mr. 1 fight.
-
Then there should be absolutely no excuse for Vol. 21 coming out in June if they only have two chapters left to publish in the magazine. Friggin' cockteases…
-
That's pretty unexpected of Viz. I thought they were going the two chapters schedule again but four? Maybe this was some last minute decision and they're releasing Vol. 21 sooner then planned.
edit: Saw the cover and it's Bleach. Also for some odd reason they've got a special preview of Black Cat.
Oh I see, they're pretty much finished with Black Cat so that might be why they're featuring it.
-

I wish we could. Im tired of seeing that we are 31 vol. behind now:getlost:
-
So basically they are out of Naruto illustrations (Feb's issue is major lawls with the copypasta job) and are now mostly gonna be using Bleach. Do you think they'll use more OP once Bleach is used up? I highly doubt it. They'll probably just start reusing Naruto ones. XD
-
Hmm…still haven't gotten my issue. >____<
Ah well, I suppose once they finish with Naruto One Piece might get more attention. Then again, maybe Shueisha is holding up due to TOEI wanting the anime to catch up.
-
BTW, more translator fail.
"Ponegliff"
-
In their defense, it's never been spelled in Roman letter before.
But damn, has that spelling always looked ugly.
-
But they should still know what a glyph is. I call editor fail.
Maybe they'll fix it for the volume though. They did fix Luffy's line about Hiriluk's flag, so who knows. -
According to O-chan on Tz, volume 36 of Naruto got edited.
3 guesses as to which scene…. -
BTW, more translator fail.
"Ponegliff"
Because poor literacy is cool!
We all know the average JUMP reader doesn't even flinch at the sight of blood, but can't establish that "ph" makes an F sound.
-
@The:
According to O-chan on Tz, volume 36 of Naruto got edited.
3 guesses as to which scene….Wait, that's the volume, not the magazine? Oh, this is NOT good. Viz has usually kept edits on things like manji and cigarettes out of the volumes. If they're keeping them in for Naruto, then I can only imagine what they're doing to some of their other series'. I hope they don't suddenly get more strict with censorship in the volumes. The magazine I don't care about so much, since it's even more of a niche market than the volumes, but if the volumes start to have edits like this, it will be EXTREMELY bad, because the whole standard of what should be allowed will probably shift.
-
They probably just don't want to be chewed out for having an underage character smoking.
