! Yes, I'll admit I'm probably a bit bitter. But I feel like it's appropriate that since Zaus didn't get much development during the tournament he wouldn't be given much to do during the battle. If he did just end up kidnapped…from a storytelling perspective, it'd show that no chef would be safe at least if the #1 was taken.
! I wonder where the fight will go from here. Toriko showed off all of his moves. It'll be cool to see him bust out new moves like he normally does during his battles.
! More importantly though, I want more back and forth. Something that sticks with me is how fights (in manga in general not just Toriko) seem to be taking the pokemon battle route where one person shows an attack and then the other person does an attack. With Starjun getting "serious", I hope this becomes more of a brawl.
! And that last page. It's an intriguing tease, but it'd probably have much more of an impact to me if there was a scene showing that those GT Robos could be an actual threat have improved battle wise since the Mammoth arc (cutting off heads of a 90 beast creature doesn't count given (A) they were camouflaged and (B) the vitality of the giraffes weren't shown either). Otherwise, I'm hoping there'll be more than just Starjun vs Toriko and then popping in on the before/aftermath of everybody else. I know this is Toriko's story but having other characters fight on screen would be great to see too.
Oh…boy...someone is gonna go berserker mode next chapter. Nice..nice...very nice. XD
☆The newest, Jump Comics Volume 23 is now on sale with great popularity!!!
The phantasmal extra pages make a return?!
& the first display of a yet-unreleased manuscript, there's a heaping helping of special extras!!! I´m really excited about this. A raw of Volume 23 should be available around February 5-10, right?
I was watching the recent episode of Toriko and I heard Spandam calling the play-by-play action between Coco and Livebearer.
Question for Aohige: Do Zaus and Joa have similar speaking styles in the original script?
The style between the two seems similar enough that the "twist" of Zaus dying is that Zaus was just an alias all along.
!
!
Beyond the language similarity (which may or may not be there), I feel as though the boots both of them are wearing could be a tell. Unless I'm missing something, I don't think anyone else in the Toriko verse has been shown standing in that position/wearing those particular boots. Could just be a coincidence though.

Also just to add to the above
!
It was never confirmed if the mystery figure behind Mansam here was officially Joa or not. However, the clothing the shadow is wearing there looks more Zaus-like than Joa-like. Which could also potentially throw some support behind the idea that Zaus is simply a false identity which Joa assumes for his own reasons.
The mystery figure happened to be Uumen in the end.
I support the "Zaus is Joa" theory. Their bodies have the same basic shape, they both wear the same boots and sashes around their waists, and they both have the same posture in their introduction. Plus, the King of Jidar and Mokkai act sort of funny here:
http://www.mangahere.com/manga/toriko/c220/3.html
Since they're both in Joa's employ, their reactions toward Zaus' "disappearance" make me really suspicious.

Have to admit, that's a pretty good point about the two rich people.
There could be a connection there, but there's gotta be more to it though since Zaus seemed genuine about his "final bout", letting the future generation take over and glad he's able to face Komatsu for that last time.

They do not. Zaus speaks pretty standard expected of a wise powerful character, while Joa speaks in formal speech from what I recall.

Thing about Zaus is, you'd have to think there'd be something huge planned for him. Given all the #1 chef hype and the repeated references to him, it just doesn't make any sense that his role in the story would be to die/get crippled at the cooking fest and take a back seat.
That being said, things might not be cut and dry to the point of Zaus = Joa. Aohige clarifying (thanks btw :]) that the speaking styles are different probably complicates the theory. It could open the door to theories along the lines of Zaus being possessed by some entity, or perhaps just having some sort of split personality. Should be interesting to see where the story goes at any rate.
The mystery figure happened to be Uumen in the end.
We can't be sure of this. Uumen came out after that but the figure in that pic doesn't recall Uumen at all.
Even I start to think of Zaus being Joa. Now Kousairou must do something (and so Kuribou). But I don't think the Gourmet Hermit is a Bishokukai, maybe a Jidar Kingdom man, I don't know. I'm pretty sure he's not a Bishokukai. He's probably the strongest person there and Ichryuu "entrusted" the salvation of Human World (he's more trustworthy than Mansam and Shigematsu too), so if he come to be one of Jidar Kingdom and Zaus to be Joa, maybe the things will be on par between the three factions (IGO, Bishokukai, Jidar Kingdom).
P.S.: the chefs are such badasses!
P.S.2: the last phrase by Mansam recalls me of Uumen telling the Chief that if he went berserk against the Four Beast, Toriko and the others didn't have any chance to face the beast. How the hell strong is Mansam?
Not the Helmet, Toriko!
The last two chapters were in the best Toriko traditions. I'm glad, since that was just what I was hoping for - if the rapid pace is present, let it be speeding up to the juicy fights and Gourmet World overall.
I too support Zaus-Joa theory. Shimabukuro shows care with foreshadowing (the one coming in mind is Tommyrod's ordinary breath in Ice Hell and shivering comment), so what you all pointed is not simply coincidence. Despite both poses being 'formal and curt', fitting both of them, he could've chosen to change something a bit. Don't think that this is a red herring.

Completely agree. It's chapter like this that make is my second-favorite shonen. I understand that people are disappointed that there wasn't any food porn, but I enjoy fights in Toriko the most, I just love how Shima draws fights, the way he uses speed lines and other methods to illustrate strong impacts and effects is just gorgeous.
Also, lots of glorious face shots, another cornerstone of my Toriko enjoyment. The page after Star lost his mask, with his eyes and face being partially hidden in the shadows, and then switching to Toriko radiating bloodlust, great stuff.

Handsomely strong….sorry can't resist. XD
Sheep´s comment about Toriko being his/her second favorite shonen makes me wonder…
Is Toriko the favorite manga of anyone here? Because it´s mine. It´s basically the only manga I think of through the day (and I´ve read lots of manga in the past, now mostly shonen)
Even in it's height (Both the Ice Hell and Gourmet Pyramid) I mostly don't think about Toriko, it is fun and all, but It doesn't catch me beyond the reading.

Out of the currently running manga series that I follow on a regular basis (Dorohedoro, Toriko, Jojolion, Gintama, One Piece), Toriko is my second favorite. Gintama probably would be higher but I enjoy the anime a lot more than the manga and Jojolion being monthly and still so mysterious hasn't grabbed my full attention yet. XD
Good chapter… I'm not sure wether I should be surprised on how much Starjun can take (compared to the other Sous-Chefs, at least) or about how much Toriko can pack into his attacks.
The fun thing is that there are still so many people and creatures that can mop the floor with the kings ^^
If Zaus should be Joa, then only if he either has a split-personality or is possessed in some way, since they don't really seem similar besides the way their body is shaped.
I like this chapter but what i like the most was mansam and his comment about restraining himself does that means that he can loose control of himself and be a danger to others?
If livebear does fight i hope his not off-screen i kinda miss his rape faces.

I love adventures, and Toriko has more of them nowadays.
The stuff about Mansam was foreshadowed WAAAAAY back in chapter 20-something. How Mansam used Knocking on himself (Though he did that a couple other times). He mentions something to Bei that "Mine isn't there." And we don't really know all that much about what that meant. I think we're finally gonna find out, which is interesting. Remember, Mansam is the #3 man of the IGO.
Plus now whatever the hell Kousairou is doing. Whether or not he's really a traitor or whatever… Who the guy in the skirt is... What the Gourmet Billionaires have planned, and what the nature of their "Joa Faction" is... There's a lot going on here on top of the fights that all look interesting.
Guy in the skirt? You mean this guy? http://www.mangahere.com/manga/toriko/c220/4.html
That's Kuriboh.

I absolutely agree
I did like Stayjuun's indimidation but still don't care for the guy himself.
Mansam's showing off something firce though.

As a manga as a whole??
It doesn't even make my top ten favorite of currently running manga.
Slew of great seinen manga are hard nut to crack. Kingdom, Historie, Berserk, Suicide Island, etc, etc.

Suicide Island would be one of those series I overlook just judging by the name alone, is it really that good?

It's (unfortunately or fortunately) less to do with the psychological aspect of suicidal tendencies, and more of a wilderness survival manga. Basically group of people of less than stable mentality struggling to survive on a deserted island, while forming their own communities.
The author is the same as Holy Land, shares a lot of the similar traits.

Hope it's better than fucking Cage of Eden
There's no scifi element, bathing fanservice, or shounen manga style adventuring…. not even remotely comparable, dude.
It's completely opposite, with harsh and brutal realism as its primary obstacle.
Down to carving your own bow, and how to properly butcher a deer.

According to Shimaboo's notes in the TOC, Toriko's VA just got married.
Spoilers from Juin Jutsu Team on Mangahelpers:
! > The chapter start with Mansan Vs Gt Robots.
The other beast are slepping because of Rin's fragrances.
Buranchi Vs Elg, seems that buranchi hit him with an elecrtic punch… but i'm not sure.
Then Barrygamon, Jerry, Bogie Woods, Cedre, appear!!
There is also Limon.
Epic Zonge: "i will put an end to all of this!"
! Go, Zonge, go!
Shit just got real.

Spoiler pics!! Mansan is the man
! my baby cedre is here!!! I am going to cry from happiness!!! Look at him, more eyes than ever and full of scars, i am literally crying of joy on a cyber cafe because my friggin modem broke!!!!!!
! lol, looks like Shima brought back Bei, Zaiper and Dosa to fight Rin.
chinese scan and trans
! I'm glad Mansam did get a chance to shine.
! Hoping Rin's fight gets shown (those sais and that mask look cool)
! Yes to Yuda and his sword
! Thank goodness Livebearer still has some crazy in him.
! Forgot who mentioned it, but at least the manga does reference the fact that the Bishokukai are vastly outnumbered. It'll be cool to see the tides turn in favor of the bad guys.
! And yes, I actually doubted it, but the other branch chiefs make their appearance. Let's see if their appearances will become more than cameos.
! Like I said last week, I'm hoping for more back and forth between fights instead of just "I attack then you attack", but excited in the direction the story's going.
! Actually seeing Mansam show off his stuff has given me hope that maybe the fights will be handled well, or at least handled in a fashion similar to the earlier arcs.
! Ideally, there'll be a bit more set up for the rest of the battles before Shima really gets into them for awhile and just sticks with the craziness of the war for an extended period before moving the plot along.
! Not really getting the purpose of Mansam here. He's the strongest there after Setsuno, Who'd be his enemy? Obviously Setsuno vs Chiyo, Kings vs Sous Chefs, Limon, Yuu and others vs good guys. Mansam just doesn't fit there..unless Kousairoo turns out to be a traitor or Zaus pulls something unexpected.
! Also mandatory Livebearer rape face. Yuda was cool, cutting someone in 1mm pieces..who would've tought? Buranchi was cool aswell but really, Mansam takas the cake as the current king of rape faces in this chapter.
! Buranchi knocked out Elg with just one electrified punch
And probably Elg is comparable to the Sous Chef since he's the 1st Branch Chief (and Gourmet World elite long before Toriko and the other Kings).

! Ok, maybe he's not knocked out but he seems not to say anything (look at the translations). Still Buranchi has the upper hand.

! There's a bubble though on the end of the page where Elg was "taken down". The bubble is probably saying "Shura" and the trans just has a typo saying it's a SFX instead of Elg.

! For now I see Buranchi having the upper hand and Elg lying burnt on the ground. It's not like Starjun deliberately being hit by Toriko.
