does sea mammals like whales and dolphins fall under merman?
Don't think so cuz all of them have been fish so far. I don't know if dolphin fishman would be pulled off since it's an oxymoron. There could be a near extinct race of dolphin men(making fishmen the poor man's version of them lol).
Anyway fat fishman sounds good but it just sounds like some Tom clone. This fat lovable fishman will have to be distinct and can be differentiated from Tom.
I say a blind fishman that is a helmsman that uses a spear as his weapon. He uses his knowledge of the sea as a means to gracefully steer the ship unlike anyone else can and I really think a blind person would give something new to the ships crew :P.
Although blind guys in manga/anime can be cliche/typical they're still badass. I like this but instead of hitting on women change it to always having corny/lewd pick up lines that he happens to think are really romantic. Also the crew is suspicious about him really being blind lol since he makes comments that only a person who can see should make.

Fat, irascible, crooked-minded, but still somehow lovable lout that plays poker and steals anything not nailed down. "Nailed Down" being defined as "Doesn't come off of the floor when you pry it up with a crowbar." Non-DF, non-martial-artist: this guy will pick up anything and use it in a fight. Shows no apparent interest in sex, yet has women crawling all over him. In short, the undeserving, oversuccessful bastard most men wish they could be.
