An asshole. Say it's a pirate or a Gyojin Mob Boss or something that's already rich. Possibly even Jimbei. Perhaps this person pissed him off so much, he held them down and forced a devil fruit down their throat.
Roger and Whitebeard don't obviously care about devil fruits (They let whoever found them eat them), so there's gotta be other people who don't give a rats about them either.

OK, just relooked over the section: Roger just said "if you want it, eat it" regarding the Bara Bara Fruit. Buggy took it, tricked everyone into thinking he was eating it, then kept it to be sold for 100 Million Bellis…before his encounter with Shanks made him accidentally eat it.
Roger must be really uber if he didn't need that...or he already had one himself and didn't want to explode.

Well, the rest of the crew didn't want it either, or they would've taken it themselves. And I'm not sure if the guy in my sig had a DF either. If he didn't and cared, he would've taken the fruit for himself.
That said, there's a lot of people that wouldn't care about devil fruits or money, and could force-feed someone to ruin them.

I should rephrase that. I'm saying, what if they had so much money already that the sale of a devil fruit would be insignificant? Roger was, at his peak, the richest man in the world. In the One Piece World, 100,000,000 can be burned up easily.

Think of the irony. A mermaid that can't swim isn't that quite the funny prospect? I can envision a number of hilarious situations which it might result in.
And let's face it the SH wouldn't need a mermaid because of how good she can swim. The SH have already filled all the essential positions anyone who joins up now doesn't need any special skills necessary for the running of the ship.As for how she ate one, well that problem is easily solved. Luffy at one by accident as did Chopper, if I remember correctly. No one ever said the new member had to be smart or perhaps she's just completely insane. The SH is a crazy group a mermaid freaky enough to eat a DF would fit perfectly.

The potential hidden fighting style theory is bullshit, too. If she had one, she damn well would have used it to escape from being eaten or captured.
Bringing in Usopp and Nami and saying they couldn't fight before is bullshit, too. Nami was a strong and competent thief that stole from pirates, meaning she had skill before and we knew it. She was also strong enough to hold her own in battles with non-immortal people before the clima-tact. Usopp we knew was a 100/100 shot sniper from his intro arc and even though he didn't fight much there, he was competent enough to be able to set up traps and distractions for Kuro's pirates. What has Camie done? Get captured or eaten over 30 times.

I thought one of the main requirements for joining Luffy's crew was the whole personal dream thing. They all have it, and so far we haven't seen anyone that fits that bill in this arc. Though Camie did mention that she wanted to be a designer someday during her introduction but it doesn't seem to qualify for the whole dream thing.

You should reread chapters before posting. If you had, the answer was in Buggy's flashback. He basically was having a convo with Shanks before battle about such a thing as riches. Buggy basically said that wealth is what pirates are after, but Shanks a counter argument to that. Buggy then accused the other pirates on the ship of going soft/forgetting what it is meant to be a pirate. In other words, but the time Buggy ate his DF, the crew didn't care that it was worth a lot of money. Why else would they offer someone a chance to eat it.
The other thing, the other pirates stated that "youngsters (they were talking about Buggy eating a DF) these days are so reckless". In other words, the other crew men were much older then Shanks and Buggy and wouldn't have tried a stunt like eating a DF to see what happens.
Pity we don't know when the flashback took place, things might have been different by he end of their journey on the GL.

Buggy was excessively greedy and cared ONLY for money. I think the difference between him and the others does not mean that they don't care for money at all.
For all we know the laid back policy could be there to prevent a possible mutiny when they were about to sell a DF fruit someone really REALLY wanted, or whatever.There is imo a big difference between allowing a comrade to eat a DF you found and forcing 100 million beli down the throat of someone else (that may in the end cause you to get your butt kicked by that person). I wasn't really thinking of Luffy (or GDR as he seems according to witnesses very similar in the personality to Luffy) when I said that as I don't think he could ever force someone to eat a DF.
Anyone with an inclination to punish someone like that would have more negative personality traits, and most likely care about the 100 million lost by that course of action.

Taken from a crew standpoint, all profits were taken and shared by the crew with the equivalent pretty much being very little outside the necessities. 100 Million Bellis would mean nothing with a huge crew. But to a greedy kid like Buggy, 100 Million Bellis is a lot of money. While in terms of a massive crew it probably meant very little, to have so much meant that he could hoard it all either for himself or for his own dreams.
I think the situation is that most of the pirates didn't even know you could sell a DF for so much outside Shanks and maybe Roger. To most, a DF was just something someone eats, gets a power, and that's that. Roger probably knew it had huge worth but was so rich or didn't care so much about money in his journey that he just didn't care about selling it. Thus when Buggy found out about the fruit's worth, that's what lead to him making that huge performance of eating the Bara Bara Fruit as a means to make everyone think it was gone, then sell the real DF for profit. But of course we all know what happened.

I really doubt this the case. Even a stupid pirate would realize that something that grants someone magical powers would have hundreds of potential buyers, and thus mean money for the holder. It's like having a magic wish and auctioning it off, only you don't know what the wish is.
And someone force feeding a Gyojin or a Mermaid/man a Devil Fruit could be seen as the ultimate disgrace. I'm sure one of their race that can't swim is pretty much an outcast, and since it seems that many people on the surface are racist against them, it literally gives them no home. You'd have to be pretty fucking cruel to do that.
I called it wrong, so long ago. I guess this needs to be changed.

Then why didn't anyone other than Shanks realize the monetary value of the fruit? If everyone knew, then all the greedy ones would be fighting to get that thing, hoard it and then sell it on the next island. When the offer was made on the DF, no one even took a chance until Buggy enacted his plan.
As for what Buggy would do with that money at the time..the same exact thing he would have done with the treasure map he had: keep it for himself until he knew what to do with it. (mostly since it was probably years before he even started his own crew and I doubt he would need an uber cannon and Buggy Balls in a chore boy position for Gol D. Roger)

I believed Franky wouldn't join, but that was before I really even got to Enies Lobby. For a bit I didn't believe Brook would join, either. Tho I wanted him to. But I am saying right now, Caimie isn't joining. Three times the charm, I gotta be right this time.

I think that the way Franky was handled was possibly one of the best ways Oda tricked us all. Franky was introduced as a bad guy and pretty much dissapeared from the story after the three way battle with the SHs and Gallery La. Then, once several GL members were revealed to be CP9, Franky just started getting more and more interesting until his flashback and subsequent battles on the Sea Train until finally he was practically a SH himself by the time he fought Fukurou.

Sadly, that was before my time and I wasn't able to enjoy the ride with people. When I hoped on board CP9 was just revealed or about to be in the anime, so needless to say when I came around people were already considering Franky a Straw Hat.

He was planning to go after the treasure and sell fruit to start his crew. Thanks to Shanks, it got delayed 10 years (this is all written in the chapter).
Buggy failed though because of three things… The first was being unlucky. He couldn't change that.
The second was trying to play things. Buggy isn't smart enough for that. He is an idiot. He relied on things working smoothy, but didn't have a back-up plan if things went wrong.
The third was greed. He got greedy, he didn't want to share the valuable (possibly) treasure with everyone else. However, the trouble with treasure is it doesn't have a set value. That DF, however, has a hell of a set value. Ironically, he might have gotten away with things had he not wanted both. If he had shared the treasure, he would have gotten something as it would have belonged to the crew itself. Had the DF been sold, again the crew as a whole would have benfitted.
The thing is that Shanks, whom buggy occused of being too innocent is now one of the big Yonkou while Buggy is a nothing.
Also, another thing... On the issue of weath - Roger was just like Luffy. So when you try to picture Roger's crew, look at the SHs. You'll have a Nami who knows the value of treasure, you'll have the Chopper's who like seeing it but are naive on the issue, but you'll have others like Robin who value other things and its worthless to them outside of spending it for supplies, ship repairs, etc...

could the inclusion of a big aquarium have been a very subtle foreshadowing of a mermaid to join the crew? not necessarily caimie, they might meet someone more helpful later on, but still. suddenly they have a big ship, with a big aquarium and they're heading to fishman island. coincidence? maybe, but this is Oda we're talking about. -

There still is fishmen island.. I think we'll get to see the next and last nakama there.
We already have a nice set-up for a nakama flashback. With the fish people being looked down upon.And before entering the new world, i'll think we'll get to see all SH renewing their dream vows. Like what they did before entering the GL.

I'll say the chance for Camie joining is 35/100 right now - but I hope it so much :D She has a past, a dream and an unique personality - but no special abilities (except swimming fast in the water and it's not THAT good) and the usefulness she has to the crew can be filled by the already existing members
To you Camie haters - there's a big advantage in her joining here instead of e.g. Jewelry Bonney. Right now, we are at the place where Camie had a sad past, and the Straw Hats can resolve her problems right now. If Bonney joined, we would probably have a insanely long, time-wasting arc about her past, in the future -.-

bonnie is going to join it's already a given. her crew looked like a bunch of trash characters that can be disposed of easily and she doesn't really have a high bounty. we need a female equivalent of luffy on the crew and she is perfect. i can easily see her crew being destroyed in the upcoming pirate war.

Bonnie won't join, shes got her own crew and shes their captain. It would be a demotion if she were to join and be under Luffy. She'll be lower then that even after Zoro and maybe Sanji.
If Camie were to join I'm sure she'll be of some use, but obviously she doesn't strike us as a fighter, her only move is speed and thats only in the water…unless you starts darting people with her head while doing a jump out of water.
From Oda's view I think he'll pace himself with the crew and have the next nakama join after an arc or two since Brook and Franky recently joined. It would give them time to develope with the rest of the SHs and when thats all done, a new one will be introduced.
Right now, I'm starting to see Franky go under the radar because of Brook.
