The series may be about American Football but that doesn't mean that they literally have to immediately take on America. Captain Tsubasa's original series didn't do any international tournaments until the second series and a lot of other sports series really never go to the international level. I'm not questioning it, I just wish they would maybe have hinted at a world tourney sooner.
Besides, if there was no tourney like this, Hiruma's dad would have been revealed this week most likely.

A whole lot of complaining going on for something you (mostly Tokoro) are definitely going to read, and probably even enjoy.
The All Star team was hinted at a few times, once on a color spread, I'm too lazy to find the other times (possibly the Dinosaurs game? Or maybe the Oujou game)
I didn't say I wasn't going to like it. I will, I admit. All I'm saying is that it wasn't foreshadowed and Inagaki should have done a better job stating that he had this planned from the beginning. If he did, fine. If not, then maybe he's just saying it to soften the blow that Jump is making the series continue.
Really all i can say is that i dont think they are being strong armed, it seems to be the logical continuation after dominating the japanese league.
And i might also add that im prepared to stake my honor on that Hirumas dad is going to be the coach, Probably a pretty obvious guess but meh whatever.
I think that it was right not to say too much about the World Tournament because then the Christmas Bowl would be overshadowed by the prospect of a bigger league plus the excitement with the all-star team would make readers just look out for players each week worthy of being an all-star instead of seeing them as a threat to end the Deimon's Christmas Bowl dream.
I would like to see Riku on this all star team. For some reason I just feel like he hasn't gotten the amount of show time he deserves…I mean for someone who taught Sena how to run and might be just as fast, he hasn't really been allowed to reach his highest limit like Sena..
Its actualy pretty big, in profesional leagues Japan is considered to be the center of american football outside of north america. And in terms of international tournament wins its second only to the US. Dunno how big it is with high school clubs tho.

I know there was some amateur World Cup of American Football, where Japan almost beat the US in real life. Apart from that, I never knew am football was popular there.
I suppose if the US and Japan ever had a full international match, (as in with NFL-players), we'd win easily though.

Theres not even need for that, your basicly sending second or even third string players to these competitions and still winning by a huge margin.
No country can compete with the dedication and money the US puts into american football.
I probably wouldn't have a problem with the extension if the Teikoku match wasn't so awful. I'm trying to remain optimistic, but this feels like far too much fan service. Besides Kid and some of the Oujo guys I don't have a reason to care about the other characters. I can just feel myself raging as the characters I've spent hundreds of chapters with like Yuki and Juumonji are going to get shafted just so we can see Akon throw a pass to Sakuraba.
I'm not going to judge too much at this point since we don't know how the team will play out, but I get the feeling that a lot of the growth that made Eyeshield great is going to be forgotten.

This week's chapter was…interesting. Morgan (that jerk who prevented Apollo from getting the NFL position) apparantly seems to be supporting Team USA (with Hiruma undercover as one of his maids), Shin facing Yamato and Agon...possibly recruited?
Hiruma in this chapter was awesome xD, colored page was cool too. Agon in team??…..maybe yes, but i don't like this idea, his teamwork and his respect for another players is bad.

And turns out that Clifford guy is apparently the QB not a RB. And i really dont mind having Agon on the team, Its not like he can push any of the guys on the all-star team around and so hes basicly a harmless braggart.
The NFL deal initiative just assured that Agon will join the Japanese team. I foresee him learning teamwork during the cup. Agon vs. Monta on the NFL deal is really interesting.
Nice chapter. I love seeing these seemingly one time characters return (i.e. Morgan). One thing about Clifford that bothers me… Why does he look so much like that unnamed player on Teikoku who never really got shown after the initial meeting? I have to wonder if Clifford was planned for that match instead.

Have to say that I loved seeing Eli Manning drawn in Eyeshield. Sure it's not a very descriptive drawing, but that last Superbowl couldn't have come at a better time. I'm really expecting a reference to the Desert Miracle in the future.
As for the players to be recruited I'm torn. I'd think Kid and Hiruma should share QB, and have Tetsuma, Monta, Sakuraba, and Taka play wideouts. The line is tough. I'd keep the o-line to big strong guys like Kurita (obviously center), Banba, the Shinryuu center (God that guy was ineffective), Hercules, and then maybe Toguno or Juumonji (Toguno is the strongest Ha-Ha, though I doubt that means much). I'd save Gaou, Otowara, Komosubi, and Juumonji (if he doesn't get o-line) for the d-line to make an absolute rape pass rush.

(reads script) I don't know who's more evil, Morgan or Agon. At least Panther remains the level-headed person of the team so far. Though somehow…considering that the Armadillos were the team that Sena & Taki tried out for way back on the Death March (and Sena actually passed the test of), why the heck would anyone fall for this "fame and fortune" ploy?
Meanwhile, I sort of imagine what sort of players exist in Kansai that don't go to Teikoku...considering no other team exists in that part of the country they haven't revealed yet. (and while we're at it, considering they're aiming for Agon & Shin first, the only other players from Kanto I can immediatley think of at their level that will probably make it are Akaba and Gaoh...who knows if the others could match at this time without a bit of training)

the fight between shin and yamato…I have to say Yamato won. Yamato's position as runningback is to gain yards, no matter how much. And he did gain yard...1 yard but its still a gain. While shin's position is to stop and take down the RB, which is sort of did. He was only able to stop yamato after he gained the yard... So I guess Yamato won by a small percentage..

I'd actually go with Musashi before Kotaro, but I just don't know how much of Deimon will get on outside the obvious duo. (and Hiruma whether it's at QB or coach based on him returning to his devilish ways between games) And meanwhile it's sort of hard to figure out who's at the "god level" and who's just barely below it. A lot of players have huge potential and could get up there even with training but there are just certain characters who are extremely obvious from what we've seen in the story. Aside from Sena, Monta and the Teikoku duo, we knew Shin was essentially the ultimate player and Agon literally evolves in-game. It gets a bit harder from there…

Isnt Ikkyu the ultimate CB? Hes got the whole fastest backwards runner thing going on.
And Kotaro is more of a genius than Musashi, not to down play the man but all hes got is his wicked range other than that hes a wildcard. Not that Musashi shouldnt be on the team but Kotaro is more along the lines of Shin, and Yamato i.e the best and most reliable at what he does.

Sakuraba prehaps for CB. It took a lot for monta to make a catch vs him.

Good thinking Sakuraba could be a good CB and Ikari could work at the defensive line tho he is a little on the unreliable side.

Those are all the known reserves that i could think of that showed any kind of above average skill. And like its been said there will probably be some new players from Kansai so maybe half the people ive listed wont be in there at all.
What, no love for the Ha-Ha Brothers?
Considering a chunk of the team will be made up of Kansai players (though considering Teikoku dominates Kansai who knows if they have any), it mostly just comes down to getting the best in Kantou and letting Yamato & Taka do the rest. I guess I don't have as much knowledge on who fits as what due to their interchangability in many manners (Ikkyu seemed more like a receiver than defense, I have a hard time with Riku on defense but both Sena and Yamato have RB locked up) but hopefully they get the players that matter.
My problem with QB is this: both Kid and Hiruma are the best in the series…Hiruma's doing his dirty work in the US so he's obviously the best at intelligence, but its hard for me to imagine him not being QB. Kid is perhaps the most accurate in the series, but Hiruma is just as much ES21 as Sena is so somehow he will probably end up getting it.
Hey! I have been rereading Eyeshield 21 lately. And I noticed something interesting. I don't know if anyone else has caught this or not, but Gaoh and the Hakushuu Dinosaurs were foreshadowed in chapter 52. http://www.onemanga.com/Eyeshield_21/52/21/ if you scroll to the bottom of the page, you'll see that they made a reference to him. As for the World Cup Team, I think that Gaoh and Akaba will be recruited next, another Hiruma spy scene in America, and maybe another person shown from the American team.
The Ha-ha brothers are great characters, but look at the huge ass linemen that represent the best of japan, and just imagine the size of the americans. Just dont think they can measure up, Maybe Juumonji could make it on the D-line.
And id imagine that the scene over in Kansai is just about the same as the Kanto tournament. The nagas dominated that scene and yet many of the best players were on other teams. so maybe the line up will be 50/50. There are plenty of holes to fill in both the line and the defense.
And Ikkyu has always been the CB hotshot, He was introduced as the best CB in the kanto region. And i figure Riku could work as a safety, hes fast and he can get pretty physical. As for QB Kid is physical the best, His speed is world class and he is accurate. But because of all Hiruma brings to the table i consider him atleast an equal. and they would compliment each other immensly.
There are going to be times where Kid and Hiruma are going to work better. For example Kid would be great to test out against good players since his quick thinking should often times give him the ability to make a play or avoid a loss. Plus his speed would make him great for clutch plays, and anytime that receiving is priority there's no one better.
As for the line and the Ha-Has I have trouble seeing Juumonji not make it. He's so improved from the beginning and he's been groomed to be one of the high lights of the series. Still, if the other Ha-Has don't make it in some fashion, and Yuki doesn't get at least a reserve spot then I'll cry foul. Their growth is what made this a much more appealing story.
I can see juumonji having a chance. Yuki, I see him ending up as a scout instead of a player. Hiruma, I would like him to spend more time on the bench. Maybe a reserve QB, but primary as a player-coach then a pure player.

Juumonji could make it as defensive line in my head but it would be weird without the other Ha-Ha Brothers unless there's some weird situation where three recruits get knocked down and they all play at the same time again. Someone like Ootawara (who has the speed to go with his strength now compared to the likes of Kurita or Gaoh) would probably fit a bit better in that line.
As for Ikkyu, I sort of never figured him as a corner before due to how much his battles with Monta were hyped compared to his real defensive position. I just started reading the Shinryuji game recently and most of his hype was between receiving and running backwards…let's just see how it plays out.

I think my problem with Shinryuji was that there were so many "multi-utility players" in Agon, Unsui and even Ikkyu that it was hard for me to figure out who was playing what, when. I mean, even with Deimon, it was easy to figure it out since they all had to play offense and defense but…the only one I figured easily was Yamabushi was defense :p

I think Juumonji getting in and the other Ha-Has not would create some real, interesting tension. Tension is good for characters, especially for characters who are depicted as a "set" like the Ha-Has. And let's face it, out of the three Juumonji is the only one who really is considered good. Yeah, he's not as huge as the rest of the Linemen elite, but he's agile and has great technique.
Plus, he's the only lineman in this entire series to score a goal. I say that counts for something.
That would be awkward to have only one of the Ha-Ha brothers, that would basically prove that Juumonji's father was correct that the other 2 are not worthy/strong enough to be at Juumonji's side at all times.
I can't see turning Hiruma into a spy. Much of the series has been his wizardry as a planner and playmaker, and if he can't be quarterback, the only viable role is him signaling plays on the sidelines by how many slaves he orders to bring him pretzel sticks.

I am sure that I'm not alone when I say that everyone wants to see what Hiruma can do with ridiculously awesome players at his disposal.
The thing is this: while the series is essentially about Sena, it's just as much about Hiruma. Even if the best QB in Kanto (which pretty much is Kid) or Kansai is selected, somehow Hiruma will still double-cross or manipulate him to be the QB himself. It's who he is and what he does…and even though he is in America currently trying to find chinks (which are obvious with Morgan helping them just like Apollo was NASA's main chink), he'll still find a way to control team Japan.
I'm not so sure. Everyone wants to say this team would be nothing without Hiruma, but what we're witnessing is a very dramatic depature from our norm to begin with. If this Dream Team removes players like Taki, Yuki, Toguno, Karoki, Komusubi, Juumonji, and possibly even Musashi in place of better players like Akaba, Taka, Banba, Mizumachi, Ootowara, Kakei, and Koutaro then we're no longer reading the same story.
We all know Sena and Monta are in this ultimate team; they've been confirmed and they're the focal points of the story. Now Hiruma is the control tower and his own personal feelings have been a slowly developing back story, so it's more than likely he'll play quarterback. However this Dream Team scenerio makes things a tad less interesting. Part of what made Hiruma so interesting is that he built a team from the bottom. I know that this All Star team will give Hiruma plenty of awesome play ideas, but a lot of the magic is going to disappear with this new story direction. It's not even the Deimon Devilbats anymore. The whole "demon" motif may just vanish completely. Hell Mamori may not even play manager. There's no dream now. The "Christmas Bowl" goal is gone and now it's just "beat USA". Without that goal the "original three" of Hiruma, Kurita, and Musashi are completely disposable. Of course Kurita proved to be the best Center against Gaou and Hercules so he's a shoe in, and most could argue that Mushashi's 60 yard kick could prove that he'd be an automatic choice for kicker (maybe have Kotarou play punter).
Hiruma… well it's been stated that he's only average when it comes to his physical abilities. His mind games were his strength, and he had a huge advantage with players like Yuki because people underestimated him. He's now going to be playing "full teams" (you'd think at this point they wouldn't need to run the same players on offense and defense) so he might not be able to get by on just trick plays. There might very well be times when the Japan team needs a better arm, and that's why we have back ups like Kid (most likely), Agon (possible), or Takami (uh... maybe? He's just Hiruma but... taller).
A team totaly devoid of Hiruma wouldnt be worth watching. And Hiruma is THE most popular character in the whole manga so hes not going any where. And i suppose Juumonji is a whole lot more likely to be choosen by Sena for D-line than Ikari.
And never fear, Mamori and Suzuna have a 100% chance of keeping their positions. The entire team make up is decided by Monta and Sena, And remember which players are into Mamori and Suzuna respectivly?
They'd probably keep Mamori as Manager, since she's practically as superhuman as Hiruma.
The more I think on it, the less I see Ikari joining. Yeah he's this big "delinquent", but he's really just a loose canon on field. They need more disciplined players on the national team.
Plus Juumonji held him off before kakai's training. And has a lot more experence. Correct me if I'm wrong but the devilbats was the only game he played in.
Yup it was and in addition to lack of experience he is both insane and below even Otawara in IQ, But in the mans defense tho his stats are better than Juumonjis and more close to the big guys (120 vs 85)
But yeah i suppose Ikari has about the same chance of joining as Onihei, Which sucks cause theyre awesome.

So why not let him coach atleast one of them. And you know hes not just a paper tiger since Kurita and every other beef cake lineman absolutivly swoon over the mention of the man.
But on the other hand i do realize he is a marginal character who most people except me never gave a crap about (atleast not for his line skills)

I don't mind Onihei but unfortunately Hashiratani is one of those teams that just got thrown in there to build the hype of Kyoushin. Personally I wouldn't mind a few lesser characters coming back (like that idiot on Sado who was obsessed with boobs) but it really is up to the authors now who is coming.
