I can understand that. A lot of artists actually release quality stuff as mixtapes these days

I'm looking forward to this.
6aRdM3JrPhwI agree with Kaze, I loved the J-live song on that thread.
-
Buggy702, the 1st one ya posted was really good I'm feeling that one! I gotta take a look at his other ones.
As for Recovery. Bleh. Love the way you lie is being overplayed. Not Afraid also.
The only song that was good "No Love", save for wayne. Fuck that "young money" bullshit. I never knew "What is Love" could be sampled so good.
btw Nikki Minaj? wtf is that all about?
-
Relapse was meh.
Recovery is better, tho. Not "great". But it's "good", I soppose.
Kanye's pretty good musically. It's just that he's such a total bitch, it makes some of his lyrics hard to take seriously. I usually just like his beats more. Power is aight, tho.
Anybody listen to Kid Cudi? And I mean more than just "Day and Night"? I think he's one of the more honest rappers out there.
I did hear Wale's "More About Nothing" mixtape. It's… ok. But I don't get the concept. I mean, I guess he's just a Sienfield fan.
Personally, I can't wait for T.I's new cd.
Also, "Pretty Boy Swag" by Souja Boy is pretty much the worst song of 2010. Sorry if anyone likes it, but... it's just horrible.
-
More about Nothing isn't really a concept album. It's more like he's a fan of Seinfeld, like I am, and finds nice little sound bites to incorporate into his songs and lyrics. The names of the songs can be considered a part of the 'concept' but I think it ends there. Look at The Soup for example, in that episode there was a new soup shop with this chef aka the 'Soup Nazi' that served amazing soup. The only thing was you had to follow really strict rules and be of his liking to get the soup. That song isn't exactly about that or has anything to do with it. He just found a creative way to spin off that and put it in the song.
I listen to Cudi, not much recently, but I still listen. Man On The moon was definitely a highlight in hip hop music last year and I played it to death. I actually don't even have it uploaded on this computer, or any of his other songs.
As for that Lupe Fiasco snippet, I love Lupe, but I'm trying to lay off leaks and snippets until I get a album
-
Kanye West raps mostly terribly, lyrics are all over the place, his beats can be masterpieces.
-
lol @ Kayne being a bitch btw. I don't think Kanye is terrible, hes getting better at rapping and you can tell he has started getting better at writing and spitting his raps.
I know everyone that likes hip hop has been noticing how many good albums that have been dropped this year, right. Top 5?
-
Yhea, I've racked up a bunch of 4 scored albums already.
So far my top 5 is5. Damu the Fudgemunk - How It Should Sound Vols 1 & 2
4. Cold Legistics - Northern Star
3. Madlib - Madlib Medicin Show #3: Beat Konducta in Africa
2. Guilty Simpson - OJ Simpson
1. Dessa - A Badly Broken Code -
Any recommendations on some non-mainstream rap? So far I got shit like (This might be mainstream, I'm not sure) Gang Starr, Army of the Pharaohs, CunninLynguists, Slug of Atmosphere, UNKLE, and Shoda Ish.
-
Jungle Brothers
Digable Planets
Divine Styler -
I'm going to assume that you use rateyourmusic.com. If you do, can I see it? I have been slipping on hip hop this year because I decided to get into some metal. So the only hip hop albums I've heard has been the mainstream stuff so far
-
Cyne is cool. There's too many to name.

Who? Zephos/Jerk does, I believe. I don't, I just find random shit on YT.

That post was directed to Jerk Disease.

My 2010 list isn't public, and I won't make it public until I reach a quota.
I also recommend these so far though, apart from the other 5.
G&D - Someothaship
Freeway - Stimulus Package
Nas & Damian Marley - Distant Relatives
Shad - TSOL
Curren$y - Pilot Talk
Slum Village - Villa Manifesto
Paul White - Paul White and the Purple Brain -
I've heard Nas before, good stuff
-
@ZeArmyOfHalen:
I've heard Nas before, good stuff
That's kind of like saying "I've heard Led Zeppelin before, good stuff."
Just saying lol.So then here's something to blow your mind I guess.
-
Freeway is my dude so I listened to that immediately. That was actually the first album that let me know this was going to be a great year for hip hop.
Distant Relatives has been sitting in my library for about a month and a half now, I don't know why, but I just can't bring myself to put it on.
I've been meaning to download TSOL for a while now but I'm running out of HD space. I'll just wait until my external HD and download a long with the other things on my list. I've been hearing nothing but good from it so I'm looking forward to it.
Just listened to Pilot talk for the second time yesterday. On the first listen I found it to be boring and his subject matter to be redundant. It's still redundant but I found myself enjoying it a lot more than through the first listen. It had some nice guest features and nice production. Curren$y himself has never been anything special to me. I guess I'm just not apart of the crowd he appeals to.
Villa Manifesto is sitting in the library with no spins as well
EDIT: I would not listen to Illmatic if you're not familiar with other hip hop first. You need to understand why it's a masterpiece by being able to compare it to other albums you've heard. The first time I heard it I was just blown a way and had it on repeat for 3 hours. Now, every time I hear it I appreciate it even more because I've heard other things and see how it reigns superior to almost everything

Except you can say it with a straight face, haha.

I listened to it early in my hip-hop listenings and I loved it nonetheless. Something truly great can speak for itself.

Don't hate on Zepp
-
They bore me. A few great songs and I'll admit that they did compel me to listen to heavier music, but it's hard through listen to an album of theirs nowadays.
-
I can agree with that. Listening to Zepp made me want to listen to Black Sabbath which got me into metal lol. There are some songs from them that are just amazing but they could never really get them all on the same album. I can listen to House of the Holy a million times and never get tired of it though. There is just something about that album
-
I forgot Nas was big, lol
I was trying to remember this one guy, something about necro-rap.. -
I don't think I've heard that term flung around… It sounds too close to 'horror rap' for comfort, though...

Horror-Core?
It can be really good.
Esham, Gravediggaz, Brotha Lynch Hung… -
I might have to check those guys out. At the moment, I can really only associate it with ICP and ICP-level groups, who I wouldn't get near, even wearing noise canceling headphones blasting Sonic Youth…
-
@JERK:
Curren$y - Pilot Talk
This is all I saw.
Daniel-San, Crane kick.
-
This post is deleted!
-
Horrorcore isn't something I can just put on and enjoy at any time. I only listen to it when I trying to hear some unique lyrics and different rhyme schemes
-
Been listening to these groups recently, I like it.
A nice japanese production with Mos def.
-
A joint off the SLUMIAN record.
SLUMSON on the words. TIMIAN on the instruments.
Get it.

B.o.B. has potental .

The on campus venue at my college gave away some random promo records from the radio station, and I managed to find k-os's "Crabbuckit" single in promo form.

That's actually what put him at the top of my mind, haha.

That guy is really one of the most versatile hip hop artists out there. Versatile as in that he technically is a rapper but his music branches out into so many genres from rock to soul that it really is hard to put a label on him. His history is pretty cool too. Getting raised by Jehova's Witnesses.
-
I haven't really listened to enough of his material, yet, but I can safely chalk him up as another great artist you've introduced me to and finding a vinyl promo copy of a single of his already is exciting. Now I really need to download a full album of his.

Pandora really does wonders for finding new artists.
-
hahahahahah god i fucking love Lil B
-
K-os is great, wonderful artist.
-
I just listened to Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty . It's a good album.
-
So for my birthday (which was a couple of weeks ago,) I got the album De La Soul is Dead. Shit's so fucking amazing.
My favorite song on that album would probably be Afro Connections, since the intro is amazing and hilarious. "Not over 'till the Fat Lady Plays the Demo" is also pretty funny. It's hard to pick a favorite with the album though, because there are so many good songs on it.I really need to get more DLS CDs.
-
De La Soul is the best hip-hop act period.
First four albums are all 5 star classics.
-
What do you guys think is the best starting place for Zion I? I was shadowing my radio station's hip-hop show a week ago and really loved what I heard from them.
-

I dont get why all the hate on relapse I thought it was pretty good (Ex Beautiful, Deja Vu, and Old Times Sake) and Smore I do listen to Cudi, some of his stuff is fantastic.

Better than Wu? Tribe?
-
De La>Tribe>Wu in my mind. Still fairly close.
-
Better than Wu? Tribe?
Yes and yes.
Outkast is the second best hip hop act. Also better then Tribe and Wu. -
My friend persuaded me to check out The Cold Vein by Cannibal Ox.
And I've been listening to it for the past three or four hours, really awesome stuff.
