Persona 5 was the biggest JRPG release around that time, so it is good for Tales of Berseria and any others. We still don't know when Nier: Automata's actually releasing though.

HAHAHA, who would have thought? A big hyped game getting delayed.
Well, less competition for Nier Automata. ;)

Oh right, they didn't confirm the february release for the west yet.
Ultimately never take any release date for granted ever at this point till its only two weeks till the game is coming out from their last given date and they still haven't pushed it back again. xD

Yes, got my copy of the game today finally and got an hour into the game. Already enjoying it a lot and can't wait to put some major time into it. Non spoiler thoughts already, the art style is really great and the atmosphere and tone I love. Thoughts of what has happened so far.
! They are really quick to throw you into the action and make you wonder what the heck is actually going on. It reminds me a bit of the first Cold Steel game, show a section that takes place much later into the story, then go to the start of the story and continue on from there. Already feel for the main character, as he tried to do the right thing and it all came to bite him in the ass causing him lots of problems. I'm digging the idea of a more depressing atmosphere, one completely opposite of Persona 4. As of this time arrived for my first day of school and looking forward to see what happens here. Hopefully they have some quick travel stuff later, because I don't like the idea of having to get to each train every single time to go to school, but if it's something done here and there just to build up the mood then I can work with that.
-
I completely forgot about this game and didn't even preorder it. I think I might wait to buy it then.
-
Finished the 3rd dungeon, loving this game so far. the UI design, music, and monster designs are all fantastic. General presentation is really top-notch. The characters are engaging, too.
This is my first SMT/Persona game, so I was a little thrown when it asked me to fuse my starting persona, I assumed that one was special and would stick with you. Nope! He's utterly expendable and you need to drop him asap. (maybe he comes back later idk) But now I'm on that fusion train, it's cool to see all the different mythologies and folklore.
The battles themselves are neat, too - with Cyber Sleuth (the other jrpg I played recently) it was just a formality, nothing special, but I think it's cool how in P5 it basically revolves around orchestrating a one-turn-kill on the enemy squad. If you can do that, you're set. If not, then you need to dig in for the long haul.
-
This is my first SMT/Persona game, so I was a little thrown when it asked me to fuse my starting persona,
You actually don't have to fuse your Arsene…...but for some weird reason you have to fuse something seemingly as a way of the game showing off the rather screwed up fusion method.
(maybe he comes back later idk)
If the other games are any indication.

That's the one thing that bothers me of Persona, everyone's identities are very in their personas, but yours can be the damn penis charriot, or the mascot character, or the masochist angel, or whatever. Move on and accept your new self, the neko shogun.
-
I think that your ability to switch personas is a fitting thing, though. In each game, the thing that makes the main character special is their ability to change. They can change both themselves and their own fates. That's what gives them the power to meet the challenges thrown their way, and psychically that power manifests as the ability to switch personas.
By the way, this game has consumed my life. I'm done with the 5th dungeon by now, and I feel like it just keeps getting better. I'll echo what BBL said in terms of presentation. I also think that it's really made strides to improve on the formula from the previous games. P4 was good and addicting, but I was pretty mixed on it. I wasn't a fan of the dungeons, a lot of the arcana bonds felt like formalities, grinding was necessary and boring, and a bunch of other small things annoyed me and took away from the experience. Here, not only are the set dungeons a big improvement, but the extra mechanics within are really engaging. The characters are a lot better, and I'm enjoying each little side story and relationship, but they also went the extra mile of making each one you engage in contribute to your game, so there's a lot more incentive to pursue them. Mementos is a great solution for the grinding, too, with all the missions you can partake in there, which make the grinding a lot more directed. And even then, grinding for anything but money hasn't felt necessary on medium difficulty, so it hasn't bothered me.
There's a bunch more improvements, too, like the combat improvements and autoheal, and there's plenty of great touches, like the eyecatches at the end of each all out attack, that just make the game a blast to play. This is an easy contender for GOTY for me, and a top 10 RPG contender as well. Maybe even top 5.

I thought these tweets were worth sharing putting some context to the game. Especially iiotenki's are very interesting

Yesterday I finished me third dungeon, and I can easily agree with Wagomu that this surpasses Persona 4 in every regard. I loved Persona 4 and is one of my favorite games, but this one fixes some of the small problems I had with 4 and just improves the good stuff. Dungeons are so much fun to go to and I look forward to seeing what they are. Confidants/Social Links are better than before with the added incentive, and obtaining each one isn't as hard compared to before. Last but not least is the style and design of everything. Even now battles are fun just with how stylized it is, and each Persona design is so unique I love seeing them in battle. The flow of battle just seems so smooth and seamless that regular battles go by fast and boss battles feel just right. If things keep up at this pace it's only going to get better as time goes on.
One last thing is I think my favorite character has joined the party. I know there are others to join at some point, but this one's entrance was so great and everything leading up to the character joining hit the right notes for me it's going to be hard to top it. Of course I'm talking about…
! Makoto. When she first came on screen I already liked her character design, and then seeing all the stuff she was dealing with made me look forward more for her joining the group. Then that scene where she finally got fed up with being talked down to and kicked ass was just epic, and that Persona she had and outfit just added to that.
Hopefully I can get myself to the fourth dungeon later today, still have days left for what was the deadline for the third dungeon.
-
Just completed the 4th dungeon. Yeah, great game improving the base. Can't say much more besides that I like the confidant system (and recommend to max temperance asap) because the perks makes them more gameplay immersive. And the dungeons.
The music other than the final infiltration theme I feel is a little less memorable than in p4. And the game needs a Junes, or a stupid jingle for something.
-
I feel like the only person who just doesn't like p5's visuals sometimes
Like, I got eye strain from watching previews, imagining that stretched out over 60+ hours just makes me want to set my eyes on fire. -
That's crazy talk. The menus are not only beautiful but intuitive (except the damn persona fusion layout that is like this :. And I keep forgetting how to point to any of the non default ones.
The battle ui is very accessible. And using the r1 sometimes feel like cheating, but not having to memorize the attacks on your 6/8/10/12 personas and your party is a welcome addition. You are on your own with support, healing and physical attacks though.
The fusion menu is functional, but just like smtIV it is sometimes too much information and too little information at the same time. Like I want to fuse a lovers persona using a chariot persona to do a quest for the twins, and I had to look it up to do it. I was making a chart but I messed up twice , one by excluding the lovers completely, and other by assuming emperor and empress were wildcards (because the treasure persona) and that ruined my original chart.
Is there a way to delete all your personas? I kind of want to finish the chart (at least without the rare judge. Tower and (for some reason) sun arcanas. I have the money and the savescumming interest to do it.

There's two new options for dealing with excess personas in this game that will be unlocked eventually. Not much of a spoiler (just listing what they are), but:
! You gain the ability to sacrifice personas to strengthen others and, eventually, the ability to sacrifice them to give you items.
-
My main issue is that the main colors are red, black, and white, which results in a huge visual pop
Combining that with all the text being displayed in large sharp letter, with some random letter highlighted because I dunno
Offset it at a weird angle and repeat it times 100 and you have something that hurts my eyes to look atP3 had cool blue for it's interface and P4 managed to make bright ass yellow very appealing through it's clever use of color and smooth edges
P5 is just everything popping all the time because we're cool and edgy and it makes my eyes wanna pop
-
It isn't really overwhelming in the game. P5 is a lot more visually interesting than at least 4 was, and that's not just because of the art style. There's a lot more variety, too, so it never feels samey or tiring. For example, now that the dungeons have set structures, they're allowed to have more visually distinct sections, allowing for opportunities to shift the color palette. The hub is urban Japan, which houses many different kinds of places. Even the random dungeon is segmented, with each major segment changing up the visuals. I'm about at the 60 hour mark, and I haven't felt any fatigue related to the visual design.
-
I wasted a day in the mega dungeon because I thought that it opened up on the defeat of the boss and not the "final day".
-
I finally caught up with the present where the story begins. Major spoilers:
! I caught the plot twist coming miles away, though it didn't stop me from getting bad end once (I double extra reverse psychologied myself, the actual correct choice was obvious but I made the dumb choice). I think they were a bit heavy-handed with it since, besides the pancake thing, the way he gave some off-hand comment about having a troubled past was really suspicious. Plus, I had noticed that there was a rainbow color theme going on with each of your teammates on the message app, and Akechi showed up as white. Still, I did like that they let you fight with him for a while. I'm surprised that he got the Robin Hood persona and not Haru, considering the outfits, though.
I'll probably be finishing this up within the next few days. I'll be glad to have it over with so that I can actually get on with my life, but it's been a blast. I feel like they've really refined the Persona formula in this game. I hope Atlus will be able to top this one, but even if they couldn't, I'd still be satisfied. I'll try to have a detailed writeup done once I'm finished.
Regardless, I'm probably going to spend at least a month with the battle theme stuck in my head:
-
I loathe ryuji after the 4th palace. I feel the need to kick his ass.
-
I like Ryuji. It's true that he acts like an ass at times, but he wears his insecurities on his sleeves, which makes me sympathetic to him. He only really lashes out because he thinks so little of himself. I don't like him as much as Kanji, but he's miles ahead of Yosuke.
Honestly, I like the entire cast in this game. If I had to pick out a weak link, I'd say either Ann or Morgana, but there's still a lot of aspects I enjoy about each.
-
Been seeing this sentiment a lot with people either hating on Morgana or Ryuji weird to me.
(September spoilers and setup for dungeon 5)! If I remember correctly the whole thing was setup with Ryuji and Morgana's relationship being very quippy towards each other with Morgana generally winning out being the wittier person. Then we have the fact that Morgana builds up inner anxiety over months through the Mementos visions. Both of these lead to both kind of overstepping the line while falling into their usual routine and causing the fallout.
I remember it very much as both being at fault and it being depicted as a rather stupid fight between friends where both sides are wrong. So I'm kind of surprised how people would take sides build negative sentiments lol -
the most I heard about Ryuji is
he's loud
he's an assholethat's really it
-
I'm on the cusp of finishing the 2nd dungeon need to break out of my habit of grinding my Personas otherwise I'll never get anywhere.
-
Ryuji
! it is the whole "let me use my secret identity to get chicks" and the fact that he keeps loudly announcing the secret and getting it leaked. It is a joke at this point. I can't fault him for the futaba leak, but with makoto and haru, yeah that was reckless and stupid. And I could forgive him after I call him out on it, harshly.
! The Morgana fight bothered me but the game called him out on it, so I can move on. The leaks tho…
Also I missed the memento vision when Morgana starts to think he's something else, between the tomb and Hawaii, because I went to the bathroom do any have a screencap or video of it? -
Just finished the game. It's late for me, so the writeup will have to wait, but needless to say I loved the crap out of this game.
Just gonna get one thing off my chest for the moment. Major endgame spoiler:
! Holy crap, I thought Igor's voice was the worst element for a while and really unfitting, so imagine my surprise when that turned out to be a plot point!
-
Closed moon, chariot and temperance social links. I'm surprised that I came to like moon and temperance, chariot was OK though.
How much time do I have left to level them up?
! I'm at October 2th, and my average with the rest is at 5, with hierophant being a pain in the ass to increase for some reason, maybe they are expecting you to cook way more for it? If it is November I'll try to rush the party only using nights only to boost either hierophant, star or my social stats.
! I don't think that devil is useful, fortune and hanged are too expensive, tower uses the day slot is useful but seems boring, death's last skill doesn't seem impressive and uses the day slot but its interesting, sun is kind of boring. And haven't even started empress.
! The party are all above 5 already at least. With chariot done, priestess behind a charisma lock, emperor and lovers at 7, hermit at 4 and empress at 0. -
Regarding the deadline for social links:
! December 19th is the last available day for them. Be warned that if you get to the end of the 7th palace and are ready to send the calling card, you won't be able to work on your teammates' confidants until you steal the treasure.
! In the end, I only completed the story ones (Fool, Justice, Judgment, Magician), and the Sun, Moon, Hierophant, Chariot, Hermit, and Priestess ones. I wish I had managed my time more efficiently, but some of the confidants are gated behind absurd requirements. You need to have max stats to finish them all (I didn't run into anything that needed more than level 4 Guts, but I assume it's somewhere). I'll definitely be using a guide whenever I decide to new game+ this. -

Haha! It's so good I was worried about how it would play out for you guys but it seems the team managed to replicate that moment well from what I've seen/heard. Took me by immense surprise when I played it back then.
! Given that I went in kind of accepting oh they did need to get a new guy given that the person that did the old JP voice died.
And the new voice direction irked the heck out of me for almost the whole game. And just when I was getting used to it the reveal and I was only like "fuck yes we're home bebeh". It actually affects me emotionally cause the old JP igor voice is just perfect to me. -
I loathe ryuji after the 4th palace. I feel the need to kick his ass.
! lol why? I'm at the end of August myself, but I don't remember Ryuji being particularly offensive during the tomb dungeon. I can understand not liking his character at all, but what did he do that really ticked you off in that palace?
-
After the tomb, and until the end of October. Open the spoilers after October.

I've been wanting to do a writeup since beating the game, but I really don't know what to say. I've already made it clear that I loved the thing, and my attempts at something just ended up sounding like a generic review. I think the game really speaks for itself. There's not much I could add that wouldn't just be spoiling things for whoever's still playing it, or obvious to those who have finished it.
That said, I did want to comment on the ending, so major spoilers ahoy:
! I really loved the climax of the game. Despite the last two dungeons bordering on frustrating, they build up into something really neat. I particularly loved the idea of the will of the people being your final enemy, since it just feels right. The poll on the Phan-site stares you in the face through the entire game, so the way it integrates into the plot as it does just feels natural. The end of the Yalbadaoth battle was also a great moment. Everything about it was satisfying: the poll hitting 100%, your huge fucking persona, the symbolism of gnostic Satan taking down gnostic God, and the way you just use your giant spirit robot to headshot him to death. The stuff with you going to juvie afterwards felt more necessary than satisfying, but I loved the conclusion, with the Phantom Thieves running off together like the goddamn Mystery Gang. I was worried that, once they took down mementos, they'd lose their drive to repair society, so it was great to see that they kept going to deliver their brand of vigilante justice to those who deserve it.
! Another thing I wanted to touch on was Akechi, since I have mixed feelings on him overall. I really did enjoy his character and the way you interact with him, and the idea that he used his power to drive people insane on himself was really cool, but it's unfortunate that he's basically done with after you beat him. Yaldabaoth built Akechi up to be the ultimate rival to the MC, so I think that his plot should have been extended a bit. It's not like he should have been forgiven, since he did atrocious things, and he had a great moment with his death, but he had more potential that I think went unrealized. Like how we only see his psychotic break ability used twice in sequence, which I assume was just to set up the latter of the two instances. Also, as cheesy as it is, I would have liked to see Akechi get to redeem himself in the face of Yaldaboath, spitting in the face of his game by sacrificing himself for the Phantom Thieves or something. I'm getting into fanfic territory here, but all I'm saying is that I liked him as a character and think that there was more we could have gotten from him.
! Still, though, it's a minor gripe in the face of things.Overall, I'm left feeling very
-
I've already made it clear that I loved the thing,
How;s it compare to 3 and 4?
I enjoyed 3, though I wish I had played it on handheld where it fixed a lot of my issues with the gameplay…. and 4 has been sitting on my PS3 harddrive waiting to be played for years along with Suikoden 2, and both are heralded as super great games that I need to get to at some point.
Basically, when that time comes that I have free time to indulge in one of these games, can I just skip 4 or should I make sure to do that first and hold off on buying 5 for a while?

I didn't pay 3, but I did play 4. I've said it a few times in this thread, but I think it blows 4 out of the water. Granted I liked 4, but it has a lot of issues that prevented me from loving it. The dungeons are no longer random, allowing them to actually be designed, the social links are handled better (the game lets you know who's links are available to upgrade for the day, and they each unlock various helpful abilities, instead of just adding exp to fusions), you're allowed to fast forward through most text, the hub is a lot more interesting (urban Japan, lots of things to do), the main cast is great, and I think the storytelling's improved as well. On top of that, there's an extra layer of style present here that adds to the experience (even the loading screens are well-designed).
The game still has a slowish entry, taking several hours before you really get into the game's rhythm, but I was hooked from the beginning. I loved the opening sequence and was intrigued by the plot.
As for jumping into this before 4: the game's plot is its own separate thing, so 4 isn't necessary to play. P4 does have some good things going for it, like one of my fave characters, a bunch of great music, and a plot reminiscent of part 4 Jojo, but if you could only do one, I'd go for 5, easily. All I could say in favor of choosing P4 first is that it'll feel much worse going backwards from P5 if you're interested in it. Since the games are such large time investments, though, I'd recommend the better one.
-
Yeah…. thats one of the reasons I've been so hesitant to backtrack to Suikoden 2... given I've played all the ones that came after it already... someday.
-
Been playing it up to Palace 3 so far and without a doubt it's the best looking Persona game as of so far.
However, I still feel Persona 4 is "better" (SO FAR) in terms of boss designs. I'm PRETTY bummed out by Palace 1 and 2's bosses. There has been some crazy fun early bosses with 4 in terms of shadows bosses but…wow Palace 1/2's boss designs have been underwhelming IN SPITE of all that buildup and development they have had (which is a major plus as I love all this time that is given to flesh out some of these guys). Heck, Palace 2's boss design felt downright lazy. Hopefully their designs will get better because I'm not really feeling it.
-
Geez, Palace 5 boss is no joke.
! I died a few times because I couldn't beat the minions quick enough, and one blast is almost enough to kill everyone. My last attempt the main robot came out but all three of my team mates were down, and after trying to revive one of them the boss attacked my character which killed me, so that ended that run. I'll have to reattempt later, and before going I need to make sure I have the best equipment on me since I rushed in before buying stuff at the shop.
! I do like how this fight takes advantage of the need to switch partners out with minions having different weaknesses, and taking advantage of the baton pass system as well. I just need to keep my stats up and debuff more, because hard mode is unforgiving with that. -
The dungeons are no longer random, allowing them to actually be designed,
Which leads to some weirdness like safe rooms being a bit too close to each other or doors needing to be unlocked from the other side which makes them redundant.

While I'm inclined to agree at least with the 2nd boss I thought the first's boss's design was fine. I mean they're definitely a step up from some of the Shadow bosses in 4 who like in the case of Shadow Yukiko for example was basically Yukiko with the body of a bird.
-
Which leads to some weirdness like safe rooms being a bit too close to each other or doors needing to be unlocked from the other side which makes them redundant.
Which is lightyears better than maybe sometimes having safe rooms and floors having no flow whatsoever.
There's really only a few places with redundant safe rooms that I can think of, though, and they're all in the 6th palace, where I can still see the reason for them. And I don't get the complaint about the doors. The locked doors exist to make backtracking through some sections for treasure and stuff easier. One palace even uses them for its puzzles.
I'm not gonna say that every palace is 100% best designed ever, but compared to having no design they might as well be.
-
One of the nice and simple messages in Persona 5 story wise that still very much resonates with me (lots of confidant spoilers)
! Is that for the unreasonable parts in live that cripple us and leave us helpless it is reaching out to others that can bring about change.
And more importantly though is that one of the most prevalent chains keeping us trapped are very much of our own making/psychology and that it's on us to break those.
! It's kind of the overall thematic structure of almost all the Confidant story lines where the unreasonableness of life pretty much gets displayed in the form of problems that Joker has to solve inside the Mementos. They're things and issues that are simply unfair and the Confidants overcome them through the bond they forge accepting and receiving help. Of course that side of it is very idealized but you know to me it still kind of rings true even if of course I also know that not everyone in real life is lucky like that.
! After that the thing that is less idealized and that really resonated despite it not being a very pretty message is the side where it's implicated that much of what pulled most the Confidants down are psychological chains of their own making and it is on them to overcome those.
This shows in guilt and regret being very prevalent in most story lines and how most story lines actually don't end with the core problem resolving itself but they end in Confidants rechallenging whatever it is that bound them in the first place. Fortune still has to deal with the after math of the cult. Star has to start from 0 in their carrier. Sun still has to walk the long walk of public redemption before he gets to a position of power where he can make the positive change he aspires to. And so on… -
In late may right now, and feeling like I'm so behind on confidant progress…starting to doubt it'll be possible for me to max them all out in my first run.
-
It might just be impossible, since maxing all confidants requires you to max all stats. Granted that some confidants do help you in boosting stats, you'd have to fall into the optimal cycle, and even then I'm not sure about the logistics of it.
-
Not impossible at all as I said earlier I did it blind when no guides were available for anything anywhere.
Which should be taken as it's far faaaaaaaar easier to do than in previous titles.
I made like countless mistakes and was able to finish the 100% run on pretty much the last free day.
But I've read about people that optimized far better having up to like 2 weeks of total free time at the end where there wasn't really anything left to engage in beyond stuff like fishing, baseball, etc.All it takes is some proper save game managment and a little bit of forethought and you can pretty much wing it(what I mean by this is you don't need to note down a schedule, I had certain rules of priority for my run but I pretty much never knew exactly when who was available and just chose whoever came up based on the priorities I decided).
I feel like in previous titles the deadlines were much harsher often requiring you to do things in certain sequences unlike in P5 where you can kind of switch around and adapt as other priorities come up.In my initital run my biggest two mistakes were kind of discovering the fortune and temperance Slinks and their amazing perks 1-2 ingame weeks later than I could. And that kind of spirals down affected efficiency on other things and it still was enough time.
Also I'm pretty confident I could pull it of effortlessly for P5 100% of the time on a new fresh save.
I feel like I might not be able to do that for P4G and P3 like I definitely feel like there's quitea good chance I'm going to fuck up in there some where especiall P4G if you want to do all the bonus quest as well -
I figured the big thing that would throw people off was how one of the confidants comes really late game and requires max proficiency to start. If you didn't train for that, then there's a lot of potential wasted time. At about that time in the game, I was trying to go through the Hierophant, which needed max kindness, and my kindness and proficiency were both underleveled.
-
Should definitely clarify if this is your first P5 game it's probably waaaaaay too hard. But things like the proficiency requirements I was familiar with from the prior games so I did kind of fully expect it. Lot's of the difficulty in 100% persona runs is more tied to not knowing things.
Like the very first time I played P4 I never learned about the rainy day ramen which is so vital in that game for the full Slink run.
So one of the first things I did when the game opened up I tried everything out once to understand what the benefits are that were available to me. That's how I discovered several free ability rank options like the plant in your room and Sunday drink stand etc… Some things I kind of knew based of on P3/4 games like checking the TV for possible free ability points, books being incredibly good and that there would likely be another speed reading book.Maybe I got a bit lucky cause another priority based on earlier games is that I always prioritized non party member Slinks given that in other Persona games those had sometimes stricter schedules of availability than others. This made me rank up Death super quickly which solved any problems of needing to finish dungeons in the minimum amount of time possible.
-

At least from where I'm at I've never felt that to the be case especially as the safe rooms serve that same purpose. I don't know maybe they'll be much more useful later on instead of where their whole existence feels mostly useless.
I'm not gonna say that every palace is 100% best designed ever, but compared to having no design they might as well be.
Oh I don't disagree on that part.
I feel like I might not be able to do that for P4G and P3 like I definitely feel like there's quitea good chance I'm going to fuck up in there some where especiall P4G if you want to do all the bonus quest as well
And get the trophies…....some day I'll knock off those last two trophies in Golden.....some day.
-
And get the trophies…....some day I'll knock off those last two trophies in Golden.....some day.
Really do it whenever you feel like it. According to psnprofiles it took me over 2 years until I was motivated enough to do my last P4G trophy :P
-
Alright, temperance and fortune are amazing for this. The burger, the plant and the smoothie should be added to the tarot as well. If I knew this I might had been able to manage it, I'm just like 30 timeslots down to end, give or take, but already on December's countdown.

Really do it whenever you feel like it. According to psnprofiles it took me over 2 years until I was motivated enough to do my last P4G trophy :P
Yeah I already figured that trying to go for both Trophies is part of the reason for why the struggle existed…...should get around to it after I finish Persona 5, SMT: Final, Yakuza 0, Nioh (which I still have to get) and that's provided I don't get distracted by anything else this year like Yakuza Kiwami.
