this movie really sucks! it ignores the storyline for the most part, goku doesnt have a tail….. it was never meant to be i think if a seris starts out animated then it should stay animated but overall the movie is terrible
Dragonball: Evolution (Live-Action Movie)

So it opened at number 8, huh? Thought it'd at least get 4. Guess they can't sucker everyone in to it.

I feel violated, why would a movie like this even exist.

Wow… usually when someone draws a real life person, they are really generous. But that picture above....OUCH! Granted, he's fugly, but he's not an alien (you know what I mean, Goku is an alien and Chatwin is not).
The other day I watch Phantom of the Opera (2004 movie).

What crack were you smoking when you thought, "Oh! Five years ago I was Christine in Phantom of the Opera! I'm now going to star in a piece of shit anime movie that's gonna bomb hard!"
You have raw talent and beauty! What the hell is wrong with you!!!
Chris Rock once said that you should never hit a woman…."but you sure can shake the shit out of her".

Now that's a surprise. Worldwide or just US? I can't believe that the movie would actually gross so little, bad reviews were a given…
Just the US.
Worldwide is $29.9 million. With luck, it'll probably end around the $50 mark.
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=dragonball.htmNot likely at all. $29 million is factoring in everyone. The movie's been out everywhere else for a while now. This is the first week for the US. If it only made $4 million in the US on opening day, that only means it'll drop like a rock from theaters in a week or two.
-
Granted, he's fugly, but he's not an alien (you know what I mean, Goku is an alien and Chatwin is not).
If Chatwin is fugly, a guy like that, then I might as well be off to kill myself right now.
I'm kinda surprised it isn't doing well. I guess Dragonball isn't so relavent there anymore.
-

Dragonball is still relevant. Dragonball:evolution is not.
People called "turd" on this one a year ago when we got the first completley uninspiring screenshots. There's been absolutley no anticipation for this movie, its been the subject of derision for a year, and that fact that it well and truly does suck and is beyond terrible only make the case worse.
Due to how NON-Dragonball this was, it wasn't even going to garner the loyal fanbase it had. If the movie had paid any respect at all to the source material, it would have done better. Still probably a flop, but it would have done better.
-

Actually no, it was out in Asia only. It's the first week in here, and it seems to be the same for the entire South America and Europe too.
I think $50 million worldwide sounds reasonable at the end, since the opening around the world isn't included in the box office yet.@robbybevard:

You nailed it. You see, Dragonball Kai started with strong ratings in Japan, while the movie fluked.
-

Actually, the movie grossed $23 million in Asian territory. It went to $25 million upon hitting Europe and South America ($2 million gained). Upon hitting the US, it only gained $4 million (thus making it $29 million).
$29 million is the WORLDWIDE gross, as shown on Box Office Mojo.

You act like they knew this movie was gonna be awful before they signed on and they it was gonna bombed. If anyone knew that prior I doubt the movie would have even been made. Also, there's the fact of contracts. Even if it came to the point "Okay, I don't want to do this." guess what? They can't do a damn thing about it cause they are forced by law to finish their duties. And don't think Fox couldn't sue them for every dime they own if they ultimately refused.
That's also why most likely all the actors will be in sequels despite knowing how bad the first one was. They have no choice. They also can't speak their true mind about the film, they have to speak positively about it. So God knows why they really think.
-

There's no conceivable way anybody working on this movie could've not known this movie was going to be a flop.

There's also the fact these guys are getting paid to make or star in these movies so even if they may screw up their careers making terrible as hell films they're still getting paid at the end of the day.
-
Barely, anyways.
Though to be honest, Chow Yun Fat and James Marsters were really the only ones with careers. Everyone else are mostly small fries in the acting industry; especially Justin Chatwin. I can't help but think that every time I see his Goku, I see Chatwin playing his character from The Invisible.
-
Chow Yun-Fat had a career, yeah. But I most I know James was ever in was Buffy, which I didn't watch. In that regard, Justin and Emmy are about the same. Justin was in two films that I know of prior, and Emmy was in a big one (which I haven't seen; Phantom of the Opera) in which I believe she won awards for, or so I hear. In that regard, Chow and Emmy may be the top of the food chain in the film.
-
James was also Fabulous in Torchwood (he's set for a hopeful return!)
-
Meh Im not gonna bother go seeing it. What I seen of it like the trailers etc… Its nothing like the Dragonball we the fans all know and love.
-
Since its release, Dragonball: Evolution has recieved mixed critical reception. Zac Bertschy of Anime News Network, originally disgusted at otaku who decried the film via leaked set shots and trailers before the movie's release, gave the movie an overall failing grade and stated "the fans were right." He criticized the film's lack of explaining plot elements, its hackneyed storyline and lackluster effort by the actors. Variety's Russell Edwards found the film "passable", noting it "doesn't take itself too seriously, but avoids campiness." Luke Thompson of E! Online referred to the film as a "surreal mess" that would only make sense to fans of the original series. He questioned the use of a Caucasian in the main role and felt Chow Yun-Fat was "overacting like never before", but did consider it "fun in a train-wreck kind of way" and that while it was never "logical, coherent, rational" it was also boring.
Christoper Monfette of IGN gave the film a favorable review, stating that it "is perhaps the most successful live-action film to date to utilize costume, production and audio design – not to mention some inspired fight choreography – to provide the flavor of anime without becoming overly cartoonish." He praised the main cast for "creating characters the audience can actually care about" and felt Chatwin was particularly likeable as Goku. Slant Magazine's Rob Humanick considered the film "uninspired" and implausible with an "aimlessly hyperactive construction and complete lack of substance" and "cobbled-together FX fakery". Reviewing the film for Australia's ABC Radio National, Jason Di Rosso stated the film was "lacking the visual panache of recent graphic novel adaptations". He agreed the film was uninspired and also felt it had dull "high school movie banter" dialog and was "cliché-ridden".
So, IGN giving a good review is what's keeping this film from being "critically panned"? Yeah, okay.
I was flipping through at 5am this morning and came across Starz Inside on the Starz network, there was a segment on Dragonball: Evolution. The ones most optimistic about it in the interviews was… believe it or not... Chow Yun-Fat and James Marsters. Marsters was all cool and laid back talking about how they took everything that made the series great and "grounded it", while Chow Yun-Fat acted as giddy as a school-girl. They were boasting it like it was a masterpiece or something. There was one scene in it that was great tho which I believe was an outtake which I wish I had a gif of. It was Justin, Emmy, Ray and Chow Yun dancing hip hop style all in their costumes. It was hilarious.

Actually…no.
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=dragonball.htm
See, NOW it's including the opening in South America and Europe last weekend, thus jumping to $42 million. There's a good chance it'll surpass the 50 mark, that will surprise me though. -
Here ya go.
You know….I actually enjoyed that.
I think Emmy's random singing added to the song perfectly. XD I now forgive her for this movie series.
I know this sounds dumb, but maybe that should have been in the movie.
EDIT: From what people are saying...I might have to give it chance. sigh I hate being nice... Why can't I live my life being non-chivalrous and say "Fuck you" to everyone I see. Less people bother me that way.

Also, it's kinda refreshing to know that the movie's not really a failure because FOX's expectations from it were low to begin with. Looks like we'll probably get a sequel, presumably not written by Ben Ramsey (as cool a guy as he seems), and thus probably a good deal better.
-

Yep.
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was a massive box-office flop, but the DVD sales managed to make back the money Columbia Pictures lost because of that flop.

God - That Video actually made me properly LOL & I haven't done that in a long time !!!
Ma, Ma, Mafuba !!!

MAFUBA !!

(Bulma however is not ... (But that's not nesscescarily a bad thing!) -

See, NOW it's including the opening in South America and Europe last weekend, thus jumping to $42 million. There's a good chance it'll surpass the 50 mark, that will surprise me though.Uh, it's $42 million now because they updated on how much the movie's grossed so far globally (as of April 12th).
Before it was sitting on $29 million due to the last recording only took in the first day and a half of the US premiere.
Regardless if it passes $45 million, the movie is considered a financial flop. In order to break the budget, they would have had to make double what they spent, which is certainly not going to happen. What's worse is that STREET FIGHTER did better than DBE on its opening day (not taking inflation into consideration).
-
Went to see the Film today … There were only 8 other people in the whole Cinema, 4 of which were Parents, 3 of which were under 10 ...
Anyway ... The film, I thought was good, it really gets underappreciated over in the U.K.
Loads of People aren't into it that mucha anymore 'cus they think it's 'Gay' or 'Japanese Stuff' but, If it was actually on the screens in the UK, maybe people would get intrested in it again ...The Acting, i thought, at times, could be bad but the majority of the bad acting was from Joon Park as Yamcha. He basically delievered all his lines as if he was a Power Ranger, shouting & struggling to force the cheesiest of American Accents on.
I initially didn't like Emmy as Bulma from the Online trailers I saw
(Not Emmy as Bulma, but the cheesy scripting she had to read - I love Emmy!)However, other than Roshi, I thought She was the best Actor(ress) there in that cast.
Roshi was in at close second, I loved the little quirks he added to Roshi, like the little Stretching after Goku attacks him. Also a real LOL scene was when Goku Cheesily (& Stereotypically Americanly..) said
" I Ham Gohing to. End. This." - but not these awfully scripted words, the fact that he thought he was finally coming to terms with his inner latent power, before elevating a couple of metres & Striking Bulma down ...I thought Piccolo was perfect, I could not have imagined a better Piccolo myself, although antennae that stood up would have been a great bonus. James Marsters acted wonderfully
& I thought he got the Piccolo voice down pat, better, in my opinion to Chris Sabat
(Though Scott MC'Neil kicks both their asses!)Also - A Point about Roshi, is they have actually been somewhat faithful.
While they aged up Goku, they aged down Roshi. There was once a time
when Roshi looked like the Roshi in the film. :Also I loved the look of Ki in this film, they couldn't have made it look better & the final Piccolo battle wasn't cheesy or gayly written at all, it WAS DBZ in itself. Piccolo wasn't written to be gayly saying how he'd destroy Goku, who'd been such a big dumbhead to wreck his plens f'r World DOMination by scattering the Dragonballs.
Piccolo was portrayed as a calm, cool, collected Villain - And that's what a villain really is, Villains aren't the crazy guys running around setting fire to things, stabbing people & dumping bodies in rivers in daylight …
VILLAINS, are ALWAYS. the quiet ones, and that's what makes them most scary, because they'll strike when your back is turned :
Napppa & Vegeta [Vegeta is the quiet one & the strongest]
Freeza & The Ginyu Force [Freeza's the quiet one & the dealiest]
Cell & the Androids [Cell's the 'weak little Embryio nobody expects & also the deadliest]
Boo & Babadi [Fat Boo is quiet, childlike & 'innocent' - Hard to expect him to be a killer]And so on …
I really wanted to see Bruce Willis as Tien though, maybe in the Sequel ...
With Krillin too .... Also I had to laugh as Roshi performed the Mafuba after seeing
that hilarious off-movie "Ma, Ma, Mafuba" dance that Goku, Bulma, Roshi & Yamcha performed. -
Piccolo was portrayed as a calm, cool, collected Villain - And that's what a villain really is, Villains aren't the crazy guys running around setting fire to things, stabbing people & dumping bodies in rivers in daylight
Clearly you have no idea just how villainous Piccolo Daimao was.
Not to mention, Lord Piccolo barely did anything in the movie.
-
Uhhh No - I wasn't dissing Piccolo Daimao actually,
And how is it that I 'have no idea' how villainous he was ?D'you think I bought the manga to prop up tables or somethin' ?
-
-_- .
-
LOL Greg - Was already posted, but Man I love that, so don't matter !
Also I noticed another Plot-Hole almost
They shouldn't have made the first Shen Long Wish a revival,
because many people were sat there thinkin''Wait, if he can bring back people, Why didn't he bring back his Grandad ?"
Although this was never actually stated in the Manga, why Goku didn't just bring back his Grandfather Gohan. Although I assume it was for the same reasons that Goku stayed in the Afterlife after the Cell Battle - Simply beacuse he accepted that his time had come …
-
…actually, Gohan was having too much fun being a pervert and watching women exercise, if I recall correctly.
-
LOL Greg - Was already posted
Yes I know. I was collectively replying to it and the reactions that suggest that qualifies as something even remotely humorous or entertaining.
Those are the minds that intended to bring DB to life. Fucking idiots.
-
I really wanted to see Bruce Willis as Tien though, maybe in the Sequel…
This voids your entire post.
-
What - Bruce Willis as Tien would work :
-
Worth every penny.
-
Did you pay for it?
If not then, yeah.
-
So atleast you enjoyed the film then ?
There's a lotta hate in this thread … -
What is there to love?
-
Emmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmy Gray Rossum !
Also - on another note :
The Film-Roshi lives in Paozu
Goku originally lived with Gohan in Mt. Paozu,
So Roshi now lives in Paozu under the Mountain where Goku lives. Also, Wonder how they'll start off the next film,
I take it they'll have to have Goku staying with Roshi,Since his shack's destroyed, makes sense, if they did that
they could also possibly have a Launch cameo in there,Like, maybe Goku knocks on the door & a Girl (Launch)
walks out giggling, or something like that … -
-
They will.
-
@robbybevard:
They won't.
You tell 'im ZKaiser !
And Robby, According to James Marsters & Justin Chatwin they will ..
The Scripts are already written & J. Marsters is signed for 3 Definate Sequels,But he's optimistic about doing a further 3, also despite the fact that
Dragonball Evolution has apparently flopped The Sequel (Reborn?) Has been Greenlit
(This means that starting production's been given the go-ahead) ..James Marsters hopes you enjoy …
Because he certainly has . . . (Evil-ish Laugh) ... -
Did you pay for it?
If not then, yeah.
I did, and it was worth every penny. It was so fucking terrible, just as bad as everyone said it was and it turned out exactly like the spoilers, and I loved it. They don't make movies like this anymore. At least we didn't get a so-so "Dragonball" movie.
-
lol so bad it's good???
-
I loved it.
it sucked ass but i loved it.
If you keep thinking that it has to be like the show then go f* yourself because that would be too difficult.
no seriously, go die now, people who know how film works are talking.
Just enjoy it for every corny second. Its like a cheesy 1980s kung fu movie starring some b actor trying to be the next bruce lee.
sure, they could have done better and more serious adaptation, but that would have sucked even worse, because then it would just be bad, and not corny.
-
If you keep thinking that it has to be like the show then go f* yourself because that would be too difficult.
Why so serious ?
-
If you keep thinking that it has to be like the show then go f* yourself because that would be too difficult.
no seriously, go die now, people who know how film works are talking.
This is the worst excuse for this movie ever. People wouldn't be saying crap like this if other popular comics were horribly portrayed in film. I don't get what was so hard to adapt from the original manga And if you think I'm referring to the spiky hair and crap then you're terribly mistaken.
-
If you keep thinking that it has to be like the show then go f* yourself because that would be too difficult.
It's was too difficult to get a 12 year old kid to play Goku?
-
DB- Evolution = HOT HOT BULMA + POWER RANGER/GAY DBZ
-
If you keep thinking that it has to be like the show then go f* yourself because that would be too difficult.
Wow, I think you need to learn how movies work. It was completly possible for this movie to be more faithful to the manga/anime.
@Sandai:
It's was too difficult to get a 12 year old kid to play Goku?
I know you're trolling, but Goku wouldn't even need to be 12 he would need to be about 16-17.
Even with that you could cast a 18-20 year old. But not Chatwin.
