The Tomato Soup Incident: During the battles at old Baba's in the original DB, Yamcha actually defeats the invisible man (his only really meaningful victory in the whole DB canon) after Roshi gets a bloody nose that exposes the idiot…from Bulma's breasts being exposed. However in the dub, they have this whole convoluted scene involving "a can of tomato soup" that ends up revealing the invisible man.
Funniest moments in dub censorship

I know this isn't a dub, or an anime for that matter, but the censorship done to Hunter X Hunter was so ridiculous, it was funny. In one chapter, Killua decapitated one of the chimera ants. In the tankoban, they painted over it with a black box and erased the blood. I was laughing so hard when I saw the comparison shots!
I've been noticing that alot with some of the recent chapters.
And I remember the whole "Tomato soup" thing from Dragonball. Didn't they mix in a clip from DBZ with Trunks? It was one of the sloppiest edits I've ever seen.
-
Anybody remember The Waltz For Venus episode in Cowboy Bebop, if you ever wanted to know why that scene looked so odd try tracking down the Unedited version of the episode.
Most Of DragonBall Z Old & New
-
Pulling a Batman by putting up these weird objects like flashes & stars
and such whenever somebody was getting hit (at least they didn't pull
a 4Kids and remove every scene that involved somebody getting hit) -
When Buu killed Babadi they removed all the scenes involving Buu
decapitating Babadi & holding Babadi's headless but still moving body this is replaced with a closeup of Buu grinning ominously at the screen. -
Frieza's death scene being complety edited out so you only see
Trunks coming down on Frieza's with his sword & then blowing Frieza away.
And That Floating sword pic was funny as hell.

Know what's wrong with these scenes?
Screenshot #1) Gohan had his waterfall tears edited out.
Screenshot #2) Gohan's thought bubble about an apple tree was painted over. -
I remember one episode of Yu-Gi-Oh GX where 4Kids changed an alcoholic to "The owner of a tobasco sauce company" or something among those lines. Since when do people who drink tobasco sauce act like that? They didn't quite think that one through. Either that, or they think kids would buy into that ridiculous edit.
I'd say the latter.
-
I liked the scene on Yugioh GX when some secret agent guy was holding a yellow and red rifle (sorry about how vague that sounded, but that's all I could remember). Those colored guns look retarded. Even my stepdad laughed when I showed him that.
-
Anybody mention the cigarette thing with Montblanc Cricket yet?
oh, and the drunken fist thing with Rock Lee
-
Dont remind me.Hate naruto,but stil…......
yeah,Yu-Gi-Oh caught alot of shit from that. Not only do the dubers acidentaly make the Paharoh 2000 years older then he shouldve been, but the entiere shadow realm thing-the original was realy good, this made it into a kiddy show.
and sadly,RTL II used the english dub.

Sailor Moon and CCS dubs got hit bad. Removal of yuri relationships and Americanized names.
BTW both of those series need redubs.

CCS was redubbed. It was even uncut. Pioneer released all 70 episodes on 18 DVDs.
-
Erm, what happened to drunken fist? I heard it's loopy fist or something now, but did it explain why?
-
Same thing was done in DragonBall during the Jackie Chun/Son Goku fight though I don't remember what Jackie's Drunken Fist was called in the dub.

They were sub-only DVDs though.

I think it was Mad Cow fist, or something like that.
-
I think it was Mad Cow fist, or something like that.
Yeah, Mad Cow Fist.
Regarding the "Loopy Fist" it was to avoid references of underage drinking. The sake was called elixir, which screws with Lee and makes him go crazy.
-
It'll be changed back in the uncut DVDs.
I guarantee it.
-
Obviously.
16 Drunken Fighters

moo moo
im a mad cow

Carter,we know that already.

Carter,we know that already.
Tenchi Muyo: Seriyo's dubbed voice for Toonami. They had an entirely new VA for him, since his original voice was a gay stereotype.
Dragonball: When Blue tries to woo that little boy in Penguin Village, it got changed into him thinking it was his long lost brother. Pedophile.
Oh in that same episode, all references to shit was changed to candy. Yes shit is candy. Try some, it's good.

It makes me wonder why they had to re-dub his voice. Fred from Outlaw Star had a stereotypical gay voice, and that was kept when it was aired on Toonami.
The "Mad Cow" thing from Dragonball still gets me everytime. They even added crappily drawn cows in the background.
I remember the Sailor Moon dub once refered to Japanese text as "Funny little symbols." Reminds me of the "Digicode" lines from Digimon Carter mentioned early in the thread.

Dumpling/dango head -> Meatball head

The funny thing was that they tried so hard to make the setting look like America. One edit in paricular was changing the driver's seat from right to left everytime a car was shown. At least 4Kids didn't do that as much in Yugioh. Though they still tried to convince everyone that Domino city was in America.

Ah yes, I remember that. When the group is actually finally traveling to America, they had it changed to them just being psyched about going to another state.
-
How did they try to "convince" everyone that Domino City was in America?
God, sometimes I think that someone actually HATED One Piece over here to not get rid of most 4kid's edits like with the other dubs…..

I love it whenever localization tries to make it seem like some series take place out of Japan
the funny thing is, the actual producers of the Gyakuten Saiban games say that the Phoenix Wright (aka the American version) does, canonically, take place in LA. Lol.
-
Also Trauma Center supposedly takes place in LA.
Fucking game localizers.
-
I've got a show in particular

is that true? THE MORE YOU KNOW

That-is-shit .

Eh, as odd as it may be, I don't have much of a problem with the changes made to the Gyakuten Saiban games. It's just about the only case I can think of where things were changed heavily without me minding.
Of course, with one minor exception, none of the changes made to those games were due to censorship issues. With so much of the humor being related to puns and wordplay, there were kind of stuck in a hard position anyways.
-
Yeah. In the case of Gyakuten Saiban, I didn't mind. Mainly because mostly everything in the original had a ton of Japanese puns and culture surrounding them, so it would've been hard to try passing them off as is into non-Japanese speaking locations.
Unless you knew Japanese, you wouldn't get the puns behind "Naruhodou" or "Yahari" or even "Mukui Satoko."
Considering the producers were involved in it and the whole setting itself wasn't jammed down our throats (they never really did tell us where the location of the games take place until the third title), I'm fine with it.
-
Megaman NT Warrior.
They BLURRED THE FUCKING SWORDS.
Not to mention every shot of Megaman pointing his buster at the screen was cut, plus kanji erased, etc.
-
That is cartoon standards. Not even Batman TAS could point a gun at the screen. They mentioned that in commentaries.
-
About the Yu-Gi-Oh! thing I think the only instance of the America thing was when those guards said "Welcome to America!" when Ishizu got off the plane at the beginning of the second arc. I found it funny that they kept in the part where the sun rises in front of the airplane when they're flying to San Francisco later on, which wouldn't have happened unless they were traveling from across the Pacific.
-
Wasn't there one scene in the original series where Batman was having halluciations about his parents death and this big-ass revolver comes out of the ground pointed at him and then the trigger gets pulled I think they was another instance when a gun was pointed at the screen but I'm not sure.
More moments in Dub Censorship
I believe there was a scene in Blue Gender when these two characters where having sex but it was edited I think to show the characters not moving and instead edited to show them just looking into one another's eyes.
Yu-Gi-Oh has a number of censored scenes some of which involved english and japanese writing being altered one good example involved a sign reading Do Not Enter having the letters removed.

-
The fact that the pic isn't showing up properly, at least for me, is kind of ironic given the topic, isn't it?
-
Wasn't there a scene in Ultimate Muscle where Kid Muscle wet himself and 4Kids ended up turning it white?
white?
white?

lol he came instead
Also, Sonic X. The wine bottle edit. If you saw it you'd know that was just fucking hilarious.

Haha, silly German ninjas.
-
Uh….............WHAT THE HELL?
I thought after headles naruto bastard, nothing would surprise me.
Guess I was wrong.
-
Funny how that's happening with Naruto in Germany when they had Cell say "OH SHIT!" in Dragon Ball Z a few years back. Same station, if I'm not mistaken.
Xb9JUEo2vWs
Around the 5:16 mark. -
Prays that if Naruto ever gets a norwegian dub, it won't be based on the german version
That dub seems retardedly over-censored. Kinda like what it would have looked like if 4Kids dubbed it. -
Yeah, but the american dub at least says something normal. The german DBZ dub replaces the majority of sentences with "cool" sentences such as "jetz demmerts" , that try to be "real cool" for the sake of corectnes and continuity, plus, unlike speaking about regenerative cells,Cell says in the german dub "In me runs also Picolos blood, and what THTA means, you can surely guess."Sounds retarded I know.
-
My point was that the German dub had Cell say "OH SHIT" yet remove most of the violence in Naruto. >:O
-
yeah. But considering EVERYTHING he and actualy ALL OTHER people said in the whole of the german dbz dub were things like the thing I say-trying to sound "cooooool" and apeal to the younger audience,to the point of making just listening to it anoying.
