Really? That's what I originally wrote down: that they all defected from their current organizations and became the "Curly Black Hair Pirates," with Captain Usopp leading them. But hey, Luffy's crew with Afros? Could be funny; I saw in the Mistakes/Oddities (I think) thread that there's a split second where Zoro was drawn with an Afro around Water 7/Enies Lobby XDD
But seriously, though, there are a LOT of characters in OP that have black curly hair. I was like, "Huh, there are so many they should all just form a club or something" XD

That's not really dumb at all and has actually been seriously suggested many times. I think I'd actually like that ending.

I'm afraid you got it backwards. Mihawk is Kuina's abusive father, and it was he who pushed her down the stairs because he was channelling his frustration due to all his pirate buddies laughing at his totally gay outfit.
