Well I think it's meant to make it make more sense for dub viewers, I guess. I don't think there's a big motive behind it. Also I don't think it's necessarily being ignored, it's just that these changes are for NEW terms to Jaya & Skypiea.

Though they might be edited for the tv dub. I think Boobs are a big no no when it comes to the FCC.
Oh yeah, was it mentioned that the FCC allows cigars? So for smoker it should be ok, so said the guy at ACEN.
-
Bare breasts maybe, but I can't see them editing cleavage. But who knows. If it DOES get edited (I really doubt it) then it'd probably only be at CN's request.
-
Still Eneru. There doesn't seem to be definitive proof it should go one way or the other. As far as I can tell it comes from エネルギー (Enerugii), which I think comes from the German word Energie, but if anyone can tell me if Oda's ever written his name in English or something like that, I'll see about having it looked into. I'm fine with Eneru myself though. Like someone said, Enel could wind up being pronounced wrong, like having the accent on the wrong syllable or maybe sounding like "anal"
In the Japanese One Piece Grand Battle Rush game for GameCube/PS2, when you play on the Davy Back Fight level and it has wanted posters in the background of the two characters that are fighting, it's spelt as Enel, and that's the name I thought was generally accepted for the anime. The posters also spell Zoro's name as Roronoa Zoro and Mr. 2's as Bon Clay (as opposed to Bon Kurei or however it was spelled). When they ported the level over to the Grand Adventure videogame, they changed the name from Enel to Eneru on the poster.
So, take that for what it's worth, I guess.

I've got a question, Mato. Do you know what you'll be translating Gedatsu's response to his acts of stupidity are? Y'know, where he forgets to breath or he ends up talking in his mind instead of another person?
Will you be translating that to what the fansubs used ("How careless!") or something else?
-
I didn't know the fansubs used that, but I do believe that's what we have him say in the subs. It might have t be changed for the dub to match lip flaps.
EDIT: Oh wait, it might be "How careless of me!" I think it's one or the other.
-
Oh, here's another show:
http://pics.livejournal.com/transmato/pic/00005ef1/s640x480Those boobs are very big! what anime is that from?
-
Heso!
HEATXZ: The picture is from Burst Angel. That is Sei.
Mato: Your post about the cleavage was funny. You are working on Witchblade it seems. Also did you work on Burst Angel. Are you working on the OVA. I knew the image of the lady because that is Sei. It is kind of hard to forget that bathing suit. I am glad that on the sub at least Sanji will get to say Mellorine. I hope it will be for the dub in a few places too. Anyway I have a question. Robin hardly ever calls the Strawhats by their name. She calls Nami Ms Navigator in the Japanese. I wanted to know if she will be calling them these nicknames in the dub. Also will she be calling them these nicknames in the sub. I believe that the only one she calls by name is Luffy. Just wondering.
-
I thought she called Luffy "senchou-san." She might have used "Luffy" though in Enies Lobby.
-
Aww, I was just starting to warm up to G. Zass…
But congratulations on getting the names back to where they should be
-
Yeah, that's from Burst Angel, the infamous water park episode. (BTW if you have a DVD of that, there's a secret commentary track to it, see if you can find it, it's hilarious )
Yeah, I've worked on WB and BA too. More crazy BA pics here: http://transmato.livejournal.com/2005/11/09/ Not sure if I'm allowed to talk about the OVA so I won't say anything about it for now.
Robin still calls people by their jobs, I even made a note to the dub writers about it a few times.
-
Yeah, that's from Burst Angel, the infamous water park episode. (BTW if you have a DVD of that, there's a secret commentary track to it, see if you can find it, it's hilarious )
I am going to FIND that hidden commentary, JUST YOU WAIT!
EDIT: HAHA! Found it, watching now…
EDIT2: 3! 2! 1! BOOBIES!!!
-
How are characters talking in the background going to be handled on the subs? Will there just be two seperate sub lines?
-
How I understand it, the translators are sent scripts for the original recordings, so they just translate what's on the page, which would include background characters I believe.
-
Yay for Mato!
Yay for Boobs!
Yay for Fixing One Piece!
Yay for More Boobs!

@Skull:
How are characters talking in the background going to be handled on the subs? Will there just be two seperate sub lines?
Depends on the situation. If something's really far in the background and it's really inconsequential then it doesn't need to be subbed (and in most cases the script just says something like "random talking noise").
In other cases, the script will say exactly what's being said or it'll say "ad-lib", in which case you translate that from the audio. Every once in a while you'll get the rare case where an actor is supposed to say something but instead decided to improvise it instead. Those are kind of annoying
We tend to do the professional movie way where if two people are talking at once, you'll get something like:
- Hi, I eat tacos.
- You smell like tacos.
at the same time.
-
So usually if you guys can tell whats being said in the background you sub it?
-
Yes, if it's important and clear in the audio/written in the script.
-
This is great, all our worries are slowing disappearing.
Now hopefully the dub crew are looking at Mato's notes too. -
Just got back from work, so I must've missed out on a few things. But it looks like all the screwy names are revised? Awesome!
Thanks Mato!
-
Wow, this is some great stuff to see. Awesome, everything seems to be going our way. Also, those breasts make me feel like buying some fine Funimation merchandise….for some reason.
Hey, if the priests are going to be called...priests in the DVD, then will Enel/Eneru be called God?
-

That's already been established as a yes. I think Eneru was allowed to be called "God" before "Vassals" were changed back to "Priests".
-

Ah, I missed that. I thought it would be covered at the same time as the priest info. Well, good to know.
-
Just wanted to throw in a quick note here. Viz uses Zoro both on the Vol. 2 DVD, and the Vol. 3 DVD.
I love Viz for pretty much openly challenging Paramount, and in effect, Viacom, but in a very stealthy, ninja like way.
-
Ha, cool. Ninja defiance!
Gerchak, whenever you get the chance (no big rush) could you update the FAQ? It'll be refreshing to have lots of that weird name stuff gone now
-
Going Merry is definitely going to be Merry/Going Merry. No more Go at the end, hurray!
That sucks really hard. One of Oda's trade-marks are word puns and that was actually a clever bit of translating to layer so many entenders on it. As far as I'm concerned, that's almost as tragic as the whole Aeris/Aerith hullaballoo.
-
Mato, thanks so much for your hard work and dedication! It's great to log onto the forums and read about all the changes that have come to pass because of the persistence of the crew working on the OP project.

Why does it suck that we are getting Going Merry, which is what the ship is supposed to be called, instead of Merry Go, which is a retarded translation? And word pun or no word pun, the Japanese version uses Going Merry so thats what it should be called.
Oh and thanks for everything you and FUNi are doing Mato. I really appreciate it. Hopefully we can get the last few name errors so far fixed to start the new dub with (Climatact, Log Pose, Den Den Mushi, Points, etc), and that they can manage to get a good voice actor for Luffy that isn't corny and lame sounding and can display seriousness and emotions.
You know that trailer for the Death Note dub that came out a while ago? Well Lights voice doesn't fit his character at all and I'm hoping the same kind of situation doesn't happen with this and Luffy.
-
@Skull:

Man, almost lost my temper. Almost.
…
First of all, for the technical, the ship isn't Going Merry, it's Goingu Meri, which, like mantra/mantora, is just as correct taken from ゴーイングメリ. Going beyond the direct transliteration would be localization of some sort. People who know better are free to correct me.
Look, Ivotas isn't here so I'll have to regurgitate our old maxim = go with what sounds nice. Oda would approve of anything if it could be interpreted in some creative way, [tangent] so why some people insist on promoting "Engrish" as 100% canon even with we have contradictions IN ENGLISH when the author wouldn't approve if we explain the confusion is beyond me. [/tangent]
Look, which is right, Lucci, Lucchi, or Rucchi? Technically the first is most correct but the second and third were written in English so what do we go with? This kind of problem can exist for everything, so that being said, why should we trust the English at all over our own hearts/heads?
Yes, Merry is "Going Merry" but that doesn't stop it from sounding weird.
-
Heso!
I am glad that it is going to be Going Merry. I am not aware of the different spelling for Merry. I have watched all the fansubs of One Piece and read much of the Scanlations of the manga. I have not seen Going Merry called anything but that name except in the VIZ manga and the 4Kids dub. So since Going Merry is the name that Merry has been by most I am glad that this is the name that Merry will have in the sub and the dub on the DVDs. Anyway I am happy that so many names have been fixed.
-
Well, I agree that the ship isn't really called the Going Merry Go much on these boards, and I've gotten used to it, but I get where Malinex is getting at, since the manga translation(?) seems to call it that as well as its pronunciation in the anime.
-
Look, Ivotas isn't here so I'll have to regurgitate our old maxim = go with what sounds nice.
Which is a matter of opinion. Going Merry is the most accurate English translation and Merry Go isn't any more grammatically correct. It's still an awkward name, might as well go with the one that's actually correct.
-

Yes, Merry is "Going Merry" but that doesn't stop it from sounding weird.
I don't really get the name problem through. What is it supposed to be if its not Going Merry? What would you use? Merry Go is an incomplete translation as far as I can tell. I think Going Merry sounds better than Merry Go as well. And where does the "Go" part even come from?
As for the Lucci, Lucchi, or Rucchi thing, what did Oda base the character on? Did he ever say anything regarding the name or how its supposed to be? I use Lucci because it sounds better than the others and seems to fit more.
-
…might as well go with the one that's actually correct.
Since Oda can't speak English he can't give us proper directions, so I'd say it's better to respect the spirit of his show rather than the written word explicitly.
On an off-note, I like Going Merry as a name but I like the idea of a direct pun more, especially given the original name is much more accessible to most people. If a creative pun can be made from the name, I'd say go for it - some puns are totally lost in translation (Supa) so we might as well make up for it whenever the creation is intellectually clever.
@Skull:

There's a chasm you have yet to cross.
…
"Merry Go" is an incorrect translation as far as reading what the Japanese says, but is it inferior to Going Merry? For the reason I said above, I'd say no, and given Oda's intent with the manga which we clearly understand and can observe, it's not something unusual - it's a good use of the English language to sweeten a rather silly term.
That's what 4Kids (or TAJ?) used to be good at in the ol' days of Pokemon - Jesse/James, B_rock_ and Misty for instance. No one complains when "Naruhoudo" became "[I'm] Wright" in Phoenix Wright, do they?
@Skull:

Lucci is an original character, though he likely borrows from the pop-culture CIA mythos. Regarding the name, we have two English romantizations, one Arlong Park preferred one (though I don't remember why we went with it) and a SBS reference that points out "rob lucci", or "luce", is "to steal the light" in French, which Oda didn't intend but he liked and goes to show how people interpret the names.

What was the pun with "Supa"?
-
@Skull:
What was the pun with "Supa"?
All of Mr. 1's attacks had "supa" in their name, (Sparkling Disy, which is Supakuringu Deiji in Romanji)
I also have a suggestion. Instead of starting at Episode 1 or 144, you have them both together. I know it would take a lot longer but it would be worth it. Release 1-13 and 144-157 together andkeep doing it like (14-26 and 157-170) until the box-sets covering the earlier episodes reach 130-143 and from then on, release all the later episodes as single boxsets.
-
Holy shit, there's a God.
Boobies.
I am very glad everything is going our way. Oh damn am I happy.
-
Malintex_Terek, sorry if I missed it, but what do YOU want the ship to be called exactly?
Im estatic we're getting Going Merry because Merry Go would just make me think of 4Kids. I kept waiting for a "Merry Go round" pun but as far as I know they never used it XD
-
Holy shit, there's a God.
Boobies.

We've been doing good at getting things changed so far, but "everything" will be going our way when all names are 100% identical to the original and Sanji and co are allowed to smoke and say shit on CN, along with no edits. Were off to a good start, but we still have a ways to go.
…......Hey I can dream right?
By the way that reminds me. If dialog is used on the TV version that wouldn't fit on the uncut DVDs (for whatever reason) would that be changed? Like characters talking about alcohol and such would be different on the TV version since it doesn't allow it. But when its back on the DVDs some stuff would need new dialog. I know people in Water 7 comment on Kokoros drinking...
-
"Oh dear, I must be loyal to Oda and his work.. I must've use Marry Go for it would be an insult to Oda and I won't be a true fan!"
No mean to flame, just why does it matter if it's Marry Go? I really don't care about that.
-
Cause it is just nice to have names back to the original.
-
Malintex_Terek, you do realize that the "go" part of the Going Merry's name is just to signify that it is the name of a ship, right? I honestly wouldn't look much deeper into it than that.
-

I'm not native english speaking person, so maybe I just don't understand.. What is the pun in Merry go?
Doesn't it mean the same as Go merry! (as order) or does it mean anything at all?
I feel really dumb.. Would somebody explain, please?I'm definitely going to by the dvds. Especially with these name changes. Altought I would really prefer finish subs, but i dont know if that could ever happen.. atleast not soon.
-

Yeah, that's what FUNi usually does. Say, like, with the Yu Yu Hakusho dvds. In the uncut track, Yusuke would say "Send me to heaven or hell or wherever you're gonna stick me at". Whereas in the edited version he says "Send me to oblivion or whereever I'm sopposed to go".
-
I'm curious Terek, what are your thoughts on Lougetown/Rougetown?
-
I'm curious Terek, what are your thoughts on Lougetown/Rougetown?
I'm not sure about him, but I think its obvious Oda indended it to be Loguetown. I mean, the town of the beginning and end? What the heck does that have to do with rogues? Hopefully Funi can keep the name how its supposed to be and not change that sign on the DVDs they promised would be unedited to say Roguetown or I'm going to be mad.
-

Like we've said, even if they have to say "Rougetown", the sign will still say "Lougetown" and therefore, would be uncut anyways.
Yeah, it'd be weird. But it wouldn't be the first time something like that happened.
-
I'm curious Terek, what are your thoughts on Lougetown/Rougetown?
please don't start that again >_<

yeah it's kinda like "san" and "sama" right?
I'm not native english speaking person, so maybe I just don't understand.. What is the pun in Merry go?
I AM a native english speaking person, and I don't know what the pun is either.
-
I assume the pun he means is sounding like part of "Merry Go Round"…which is barely a pun and is lame. Or maybe he means it sounds like a a 2 year old saying "Merry Go!" If he means something else, I have no idea.
