Good, good! Another quick question, about the logo. Are you keeping the original Japanese text at the top or are you replacing it with "Shonen Jump's" or just not using anything there all together?

Ninja post! :ninja:
I can't say much or give details, but many (not all, but many) of the changes/fixes we asked for a while back (including stuff I didn't tell you guys for fear of more crazy wacky posts, maybe I'll talk about them in my memoirs when I'm old ) got approved. Quick example is that mantra is back
Awesome! Nice to know some little nutty fans and a translator can make a small difference in the world of English One Piece.

Don't know, that's probably something only the businessmen/art dept might know.

To be fair, I wasn't the only one who was pushing for changes. I think just about everyone at FUNi working on OP wanted the dumb stuff like G. Zass changed. But I'm glad we're getting results!

I just read a post from an ANN reviewer on the topic thread for the the FUNimation ACEN panel, and from what Key said it sounds like the first releases will be episodes 144-205, and the earlier episodes will come out depending on how the first releases sell. It sounded like that if they get to the earlier episodes by fall we'll get a simultaneous release. I don't know, that's how I interpreted it.
-
Well the guy said that they are dubbing 144-205 first, but if they finish it before whenever the boxset comes out, they will start dubbing episode 1-13.
That and if I remember correctly the price for the boxset was 49.95, maybe it was .99. Anyway, it's pretty much 50 bucks.

They promised theyd do the early eps no matter what. They shouldn't of bothered with it if their only going to do a series this long on a "we dub and release as long as its popular" basis. Thats basically been my main fear since the beginning. That they'll get it, promote it, etc and then drop it probably before the end of Enies Lobby if it doesn't become DBZ 2 for them. And this is with none of the early episodes being rereleased. I really hope I'm wrong though.
Basically I don't see them making it until the end, no matter how optimistic I try to force myself to be.

Actually I was hoping they'd do that. I mean sure everyone wants to see Funi hurry up and make there way through the beginning of the series. But looking at the episodes 1-13 and 144-157, I'd actually want to see Jaya first. And I always thought, wouldn't it be easy to release Uncut Skypeia Episodes already mostly done AND do slowly Catch up while their Skypeia episodes are airing.
Essentially:
-Funimation gets 144-205 done, it starts airing in August once a week
-Funi releases the first set of 144-157
-Things go well and the DVDs sell (hopefully)
-Funi starts working on episodes 1-13 while Skypeia is still airing.
-Funi releases Skypeia 158-171 AND either simultaneously or within a short window of time release 1-13.
-A year or so goes by (airing 50 episodes once a week would take a good year or so) Funi starts making 206+ and the process repeats. That's how I hope they do things. Or something close.

Most people would only want to buy the DVDs in order, and I dont want to have to wait until I'm 40 to get all the episodes before Skypiea. >_>

I think there was a bit of confusion about what exactly was said. Here's Lance's response: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=422996#422996
Basically, looks like FUNi is still up in the air about where the DVDs will start.
-
A simultaneous release makes me wonder.
We're supposed to see like 2-3-ish box sets a year right?
Well, would a simultenous release mean 2-3 box sets of recent episodes + 2-3 box sets of older episodes? (basically 4-6 box sets a year?)
Or would it mean like 2 of the box sets are recent episodes, and then one is older episodes?
-
I, for one, see no problem with keeping "Sogeking" as "Sogeking".
Why?
For one, Sogeking isn't the first pun exclusive to One Piece in its original Japanese. "OniGiri" is also such a pun, and is also left alone in the english version. I believe that names, towns, and in some instances fighting techniques should be left un-americanized.
Two, it's in english. A couple of times. Not only does Sogeking
! have a bounty with his name in english, but there is also a Colorspread with everyone's name in english, including "Sogeking".
It may be a long while coming, but there is no good reason to have to change it. Unlike most of the names we've been bouncing back and forth here, "Sogeking" is one of the few to have direct proof of authenticity, and thereby requires no guessing as to how it's translated.
Back on the current subject: As a long time watcher of ONE PIECE, it doesn't matter where we start selling the DVDs; I'll already know about everything that's going on. However, for the people who haven't watched 4KIDS version (bless them) and STILL find the self-control to avoid resorting to the fansubs (again, bless them), there will be mass confusion as to what the eff is happening. Unless FUNi has some miraculous scheme to catch everybody up past 140+ episodes, there are going to be some major plot drops for a certain untapped fanbase.
-

That's even better, it makes me feel more confident in the production as a whole knowing that a LOT of people are fighting for the best translation possible.

When is Anime Expo exactly?
-
@Skull:
When is Anime Expo exactly?
Two seconds of Google = June 29 - July 2
- The guy mentioned that it's still Zolo. Paramount pictures own the rights to Zorro (wtf?) so they can't do anything. This is also the reason why they had to change dectective conan to case closed (Apperantely there is some conan character by Paramount)
And Paramount Pictures is owned by Guess who, so of course they probably couldn't get usage without some kind of huge payoff.
Fucking Viacom.

Reason for Zolo and why youtube lost it's true purpose.

I have two questions:
1. In the fan subs, if a joke is a play on Japanese works and thus won't be clear to someone who can't speak Japanese (i.e. the "little servent/flat chested" joke in the Arlong arc), the subbers include a few lines of text (usually at the top) to explain it in more detail. However I believe I read somewhere that you don't intend to put comments like that onto the DVD. Is this true?
2. If so, how are you going to handle jokes like that on the un-cut DVDs? Will you include an explination in the extras, in the booklet, or just leave it alone?
-
Actually releasing them over here would be quite nice

Also, all of you who think that the first(released)/12(correct number) volume has episodes 144-157 in , you're wrong. A even number times by a odd is not odd but even (It's 144-156, 157-169, 170-182, 183-195, etc)

I think this got asked before, but it's not common professional practice to include notes like that in subtitles. That's one thing I miss from my fansubbing stuff. Every once in a while for past shows, if allowed to and if space allows for it, I might put a very quick explanation in parentheses. Every case is unique though. Sometimes it's possible to write things in a way that gets the info across. It's not too common (especially with FUNi) to include notes like that in booklets.
This has led me to consider doing notes of my own on a personal site/blog or whatever, but usually in the past I haven't had the time. I think it'd be neat to examine translations and stuff, it'd also help teach people about Japanese culture. But such resources probably already exist anyway for OP I bet.

@ThegreatPirateKing:
(I Cumulus Tests WTF), I was actually wondering about name changes (Zoro to Zolo, Jesus to G.Zass, etc) because I personally find them more interesting. If you can give one, thank you in advance!
Like I mentioned before, I think we've fixed ALL Blackbeard pirates, so it looks like Jesus is back. But I gotta remember to let them know how it's pronounced. Never thought we'd manage Jesus though Also, not a big deal, but it looks like it's now Gedatsu.
I got some more possible good news but don't want to jump the gun yet.
-
That's awesome news and more awesome news soon is even more awesome! Did I mention how awesome that is?
I'm sorry but I must of pharsed my sentence wrong because I meant other name changes that we haven't heard of that have been hopefully fixed now. Thanks in advance!
Edit: Nvm, i'll wait while for the question. But no more G.ZASS!!! Whoot!
-
WOW! Thanks Mato, you rock something hardcore!
About Jesus, will it actually be pronounced like JEE-Zess or "Hey Zeus"? I mean I know you said earlier that Oda actually writes in Japanese with the "G" sound, makes me think even he was confused with the whole deal.
I'm cool with either one as long as the name is actually spelled "Jesus" when he's introduced in 151.
-

Give him a break man! He's probably shared more than he should have already! Yeesh!
-
HOLY CRAP.
I did not believe that the names would actually get changed! w00t!
Gedatsu!
Jesus!
Van Auge! (REALLY HAPPY ABOUT THIS ONE)
I also can't believe you guys got it changed back to Jesus. G. Zass is pretty much just asking for trouble, might as well just go with the original name to make sense.
-
Ha, yeah, I'm constantly, CONSTANTLY worried about saying stuff. A part of me says "BLOCK THE SITE BLOCK IT NOW" but so far I've been able to club that part of me into submission. That's why I keep saying that maybe in the future I'll talk about other stuff
Gerchak: I think it might be van Auger now. Ogre was definitely weird.
-
Wait, did you (mato) ever say which names were changed, or are you still waiting? I kinda looked back like 3 pages and didn't see a list, so I am guessing not.
-
What are you going to do about Mr. 2 Bon Clay and his crew when Funi goes back to dub previous episodes? i'm assuming naturally that they're not even going to mention 2 being a transvestite.
-
warp: Not exactly, because I don't remember what incorrect names everyone already knew about. Biggest stuff I can think of is the Blackbeard pirate stuff, mantra, Gan Fall, Gedatsu, Going Merry, oh I think they're gonna be priests now instead of vassals, at least in the uncut DVD version, shichibukai is now the same as viz's (Seven Warlords of the Sea I think, correct me if I'm wrong) and then there's other little things here and there involving hyphenation, spaces, etc. that aren't anything too important.
-

Why not? I've worked on shows that have plenty of transvestites. One show I did even had an entire crossdressing bar complete with crossdressing showmengirls dancing around. Anyway, I'm fairly confident that he'd still be okama in the uncut DVDs at least.
-
I was okay with the name changes but I will be one to say
FUCKING HELL YEAH! I love Funimation =D dances
EDIT:
now try and tell me fans don't have influence ;)sorry if it was said but what is Enel/Eneru's name going to be now?
-
@Gerchak:
#1: What will happen with the names, like Trace (Ace) and Zolo (Zoro)? What about the Going Merry?
Answer: FUNimation will be doing their best to be true to the manga being released by Viz. Fire Fist Trace will have his name reverted back to Ace, however, the current opinion of the higher-ups at FUNimation are thinking of keeping Zolo for Zoro's dubbed name. However, the translation team (including our friend Mato) is trying very hard to get the name changed back to Zoro for the subtitles on the Uncut DVD releases. Enel's name in the dub will be Eneru. Gan Fall and Wiper will be respectively called Gunfall and Wyper in the new dub. The 4 Priests of Skypiea (whom will be known as the Vassals of Skypiea) are: Gedatz, Ohm, Satori, and Shura. Miss Groundhog's Day will get her original name of Miss MerryChristmas when FUNi gets back to those episodes. Vivi's full name will be Nefeltari Vivi. The Going Merry will be referred to either as: "Going Merry", or "Merry", depending on the situation. Other names have not been identified yet.Still pushing for Zoro for subs, might be possible. Cross your fingers everyone! Gunfall is now Gan Fall. The vassals will be priests on the dvds, on the tv broadcast I dunno. Maybe they'll still be vassals there or something else. I think the case is similar with the Eneru as God thing. Gedatz is now Gedatsu, so they all have their correct names now. Might be able to fix Nefeltari whenever we get to the name, so you might want to not mention non Jaya & Skypiea stuff at all in your FAQ for now. Going Merry is definitely going to be Merry/Going Merry. No more Go at the end, hurray!
#10: Will words like "nakama" be used in the show? What about other terms like Shichibukai? What about Sanji referring to Nami as "Mellorine" and using terms like "-swan" and "-chwan"? What about terms like "Knock-Up Stream", "Log Pose", "Mantra", and the Priests of Skypiea?
Answer: There is reportedly some sort of "master list" that has been made that describe the romanizations of many One Piece words and names. As far as nakama goes, it is hard to say at this point. "Nakama" is being translated into a different word for the Uncut DVD subs and the dub. The term Shichibukai may be replaced with "Seven Great Pirates", or something along those lines. The ever-funny terms that Sanji uses with Nami's and Robin's names (-san/-swan and -chan/-chwan) will probably be dropped for the dub. It is not clearly known about the fate of "Mellorine". The Knock-Up Stream will retain its name, and also, the Log Pose (the Grand Compass as known in the 4kids version) will retain its name as the Log Pose. The Priests of Skypiea will be known as the Vassals of Skypiea. Currently, according to the reported "master list", Mantra will be replaced with "Mantora". The reason for this is that the Japanese pronounciation of Mantra goes as "man-to-ra", so the maker of the List probably went with it.Mellorine is in. Again, vassals will be priests for the dvds. Mantra is fixed Shichibukai I think is what Viz has. Blackbeard pirates are fixed.
#12: Who is this "Mato" guy, specifically?
Answer: Mato is a translator that works for FUNimation. He translates the original Japanese Audio into English for subtitles, scripts that will be modified for dubbing, etc.Just wanted to say that I'm not the only translator, this answer sorta makes it sound that way. I'm just sort of the brave one Luckily the AP folks are pretty nice
#15: What about the attacks/names of weapons in the dub?
Answer: The attack names are either remaining the same as they were in the original Japanese version, or changing slightly for translation. Chopper's Point forms will still be referred to as Boost forms, though. Nami's Clima Tact (known as the Weather Forcer in the 4kids dub) will be called the Climate Baton. All of Luffy's attacks will have the word "Gum-Gum" preceding them, as opposed to "Gomu Gomu No". All of his attacks, like Pistol, Bazooka, Gatling, Stamp, Whip, Rifle, and all his others will retain these names. No more "Gum Gum Double Barrel" crap, thankfully! No word on other characters' attack names yet, but the good news is that the made-up crap from 4Kids is just about gone. For the subtitles on the Uncut DVD's, the attack names for Sanji and Robin will remain in their native languages (French and Spanish).Might be able to fix some stuff here, I'm looking into it.
#19. How far along is FUNi in the dub? How many episodes have they translated?
Answer: No one from FUNi is permitted to say how far along they are. What is known is that their work isn't done in sequential order (i.e. 144, then 145, etc.)The DUB is probably done in sequential order. I wouldn't know though, but my gut says it's done in relatively sequential order.

EDIT:
now try and tell me fans don't have influence ;)sorry if it was said but what is Enel/Eneru's name going to be now?
Still Eneru. There doesn't seem to be definitive proof it should go one way or the other. As far as I can tell it comes from エネルギー (Enerugii), which I think comes from the German word Energie, but if anyone can tell me if Oda's ever written his name in English or something like that, I'll see about having it looked into. I'm fine with Eneru myself though. Like someone said, Enel could wind up being pronounced wrong, like having the accent on the wrong syllable or maybe sounding like "anal"
-
Praise G. Zass! (Or God Enel, whichever religion you are…) I'm looking forward to this (if even possible) even more than when I first heard the big news! Keep bringing us the good news, Mato!

Mato, thanks for everything! Without you, we'd still be on step 1! You are Super Special Awesome!

ahh okay, fine that's fine. Eneru was the one I had the least problem with I just wasn't sure if someone mentioned it or not…
so can I have your children?

Not sure, that's up to the dub guys. I've made sure to include tons of notes about it.

Hey Mato, I'm not sure about Oda himself, but Enel has been used in english a number of times (someone earlier in the thread posted a cover of Weekly Shounen Jump with "LUFFY VS. ENEL" on the front), in video games and a toy line.
Follow the link I'm about to give. It's a MASSIVE translation note on both the name "Enel", as well as the attacks he uses.

Also, those names you said you fixed; it IS for both the sub and dub, right? Before I experience a premature joygasm. I'd be really stoked if it was back to Gedatsu, Going Merry, and etcetera.
We all appreciate greatly what you do, and support you guys 100% of the way! You all probably deserve a font color change like the rest of the exclusive gang!

Enel ,I think, is a measuring unit for electricity like Watts.
I just thought up another question. In the arabasta arc, Satan ahem er, 4kids edited out Nami and Robin's cleavage. Will… Funi avoid doing that?

Yeah, these are for sub and dub so far. We already did tons of research on the attack names (most of those were messed up too :silly: ) and those have since been fixed as well

Are you kidding me? FUNimation is BOOBIES GALORE. Don't believe me? Here's another show I'm working on at the moment.
Oh, here's another show:
I swear, like 70% of the shows I've done are directly involved with/are about giant breasts. FUNi won't mess with that stuff, I'm almost certain of it
-
Boobs rule =D
BTW these name changes will be on the dub and the subs right?… or did I miss read that?...
-
One small question! Sanji's attack names were all "Shoot" in the original (i.e. "Collier Shoot" "Poitrine Shoot") Whereas VIZ changed the names slightly ("Collier Coup" "Poitrine Treader")) Will FUNimation be using the VIZ names, or putting "Shoot" on the end? Or Coup, since it's the French way of saying "Hit" or "Shot" …IMO, Coup would be the best thing to use, but it's up to you guys...
-
I don't know yet, Sanji's basically unconscious most of the time right now
-
Boobs rule =D

Yeah both so far. I'm hoping for subs we can change stuff even further to have Point, Zoro, etc.

I just want you to know that I am extremely grateful to you guys… I do have one last question though and I'm NOT ungrateful for what you guys have done at all but I am a little curious. Is there a reason they don't want to change Chopper's Points back to Points?... it just makes so much sence since that's what he's saying O_o it would just... make sence XD
either way all this news is great. Thanks so much for keeping us informed. It's great to know Funi really does listen to their fans.
