It looks more like an overall celebration of 90's sonic. I think we'll have one zone from each of the big five and the rest will be new. And I think the rest of the remixed zones will be radically different - I think the beginning of green hill was only the same because it will be the first level, and we already saw a sonic 2 style corkscrew and sonic 3 secret giant ring in it, as well as a new boss. We also saw sonic 3 elemental shields, and even a knuckles chaotix combi ring. I understand why they chose Green Hill as the sonic 1 level, but it is kind of a shame - means we probably won't get
in the game. :/Glad to hear that and I'm gunna get it for sure. I want lots and lots of zones and some original ideas though. I love the fact that you start out with the classic trio and the overall graphical feel. I just don't see why people think this game is going to suck. If Sonic Team/Dimps develops the game 9/10 its quality. And I can't remember the last time they really screwed up a 2D sonic other than maybe a couple of games. Granted Sonic 4 isn't the best but I dig it. Sonic Generations 2 is cool, but Sonic Mania seems like my bread and butter. I'm excited and I wish our fanbase would stop being so pessimistic. It takes effort to be Sonic '06 bad again lol.
-
I feel like Sega is leaning too much on "Classic Sonic". Everything they announced (aside from the Boom stuff) feature him in a blatant attempt at nostalgia. Which makes sense, it's the 25th and all, but it also shows somehow a lack of confidence in "modern sonic"?I also kinda hate that he's a separate distinct character now, if they've decided that they want to go back to that character design and that sort of gameplay, then just do it. Don't label it differently, just let this be what Sonic is. I can't think of another video game where the protagonist has to team up with a "classic" version of himself, because the core brand has gotten so far off-track and everyone knows it. Sure, a lot of franchises are radically different than how they started out, but they don't usually draw attention to it?
Not saying it counts but we do have Mario & Luigi Partners In Time and Mario & Luigi Paper Jam.
@The:
IMO, there are only six Sonic games I truly dislike:
Sonic Labyrinth
Sonic R
Shadow the Hedgehog
Sonic '06
Sonic Genesis
Sonic Boom - Rise of LyricEvery other game scales at an average, good, great, or awesome for me.
I hated Labyrinth too along with all the other Game Gear Sonic games.
-
But… bridge zone! :o
Seriously though, you should give the Master System versions of Sonic 1, 2, Chaos and Triple Trouble another chance. Tails Adventure is really cool too, as well as Coca Cola Kid (which I'm convinced was a scrapped Knuckles solo game with the graphics changed). -
I just don't see why people think this game is going to suck.
Because at this point their record is roughly 7-10 good games from the first 10 years, and about 70 mediocre-bad ones from the last 15. (There's been about 85 Sonic games, not counting compilations. THIRTEEN of those are racing games. And that's not counting games that varied a lot between systems like Unleashed or Colors, which were very different depending on the platform/)
GOOD
Sonic 1
Sonic 2
Sonic 3
Sonic and Knuckles
Sonic CD
Chaotix
Sonic Adventure
Sonic Adventure 2
Sonic Heroes (arguably. No one liked it at the time, but history has shown it to be the last decent one.)
Smash Brothers (not real ya Sonic game but the best thing he's been in lately)OKAY
Sonic 4 II (But not Sonic 4 I, which had awful physics)
Sonic Colors
Sonic Generations
Sonic Lost World
Mario and Sonic at the Olympics
Sonic Rush
Sonic Rivals (your mileage will vary on if you're willing to learn the tracks or if you're frustrated by having to sort of know them)MEDICORE-BAD
Everything else.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sonic_the_Hedgehog_video_gamesFAMOUSLY AWFUL
Shadow the Hedgehog
Sonic 06
Sonic Unleashed
Sonic Boom
Sonic Free Riders (It was worse than the first two Sonic Riders games due to motion controls… but all three were bad.)
Sonic Underground-the cartoon where Sonic is triplets all voiced by Jaleel White, including the sister, and they play magic instruments... when we COULD have had another 65 episodes of SatAM.)People have doubts because Sonic hasn't had a solid track record in a very, very long time and every really good game in the history is from a team that hasn't been responsible for decades.
Even Mario is starting to tarnish a bit after being flawless for decades because all the most recent games have been very routine and ordinary. None of them bad but none of them good, either.

The Game Gear version of
Sonic 1 is a tough sell though being that it's sub-par port of a somewhat much better game. -
Wait a second, Unleashed is considered awful? Most of the comments I see about Unleashed is that the game is fun and that the Werehog levels are a bit tedious sometimes, but not totally unfun. Add the fact that since Boom's release and its shallow combat gameplay, people now appreciate the Werehog's combat a whole lot more now.

Pretty much I'm one of the few people here on this board who actually liked it and don't consider it to be remotely as bad as
others have. Two knocks against the game though is the use of key stones and balancing segments for the Werehog portions the game needed those why? And why is Eggmanland so damn tedious. -
Unleashed is 1 minute stage of an okay 3D Sonic game, followed by a 15 minute wannabe Kingdom Hearts stage of Were-hog with awkward combat, really wonky ledge grab physics, stretchy arms that sometimes grab in mid jump and sometimes don't, and bad map design thats unbearably tedious. Without werehog it probably would have been overall considered decent game. Not great, but decent, a step in the right direction. But the nighttime sections are so lengthy and tedious and bad it ruins the whole experience.
Made marginally better on the PS3 which had longer daytime stages. But on the PS2 it was roughly 80% werehog, 20% Sonic.
Sonic's biggest problem is they reinvent the wheel every single game instead of just building on something that works, so they just keep mucking it up in new ways.

I don't know if this was posted here, but… I could not stop rewatching this video.

Game Gear games play far better on the rereleased Majesco Game Gear, which had a better screen with much less blur. It goes for 50-100 on ebay though, so just emulate them unless you really get into collecting for the GG. Game Gear games are also generally very short; You could probably beat all five Sonic games in a few hours total using save states.

I actually didn't know there was a rereleased game gear.
-
They even released a single new game! …Unfortunately it was crap.
-
Watching full video… yeah. I'm sold. It looks like they finally nailed it. It looks straight up like an actual Sonic game finally with the right physics and level design intact, in the way Sonic 4 and Generations didn't quite manage.
-
Could've did without the commentary though.
-
I don't know why but it bugs me so much that he used the Fire Shield's dash but did not test if Sonic has the Insta-shield.
-
Wait for the twist that absolutely fucks it all up.
-
I commend Sonic 4 and Generations for attempting to recreate the classic gameplay and for the most part it was almost accurate. But after fully seeing Sonic Mania in action, I can say that this game will definitely recreate Sonic's glory days from the Genesis/Mega Drive. As a Sonic fan who grew up with the Adventure games (on Dreamcast) and Heroes and the Mega Collection on PS2, this game will hit every point of nostalgia for me.
Plus, this is only half of the package for Sonic's 25th Anniversary!I can't wait for more news about Sonic '17!
(Don't worry y2kyle89, you're not the only one who misses Blaze.)

Looks great. Think they'll charge a full $60 for it though?
-
Alright Sega, you've got a return to Sonic's roots, a really talented person working on this, and a very promising gameplay trailer. You'd have to be the dumbest people in the world to mess this up.
So let's how you manage to do so.
-
I feel Sonic Mania would only be 60 bucks if they give us like 9 Zones consisting of 3 Acts with several regular bosses & one or two major bosses. Plus it could be cool if they are willing to do Zone DLC(chosen through worldwide polls) to extend longevity.

I don't see how'd they could mess this up besides pulling a Warner-Bros and putting out the game in a unfinished state for the
PC:ninja: -

Remember the Sonic Cycle; Sega's biggest talent is trailers. By the time 2017 rolls around the game could be Chao Pinball: Nuts & Bolts guest starring Sonic the Hedgehog.

Except this time there's actual trusted names involved as opposed to generic background sega employee, and they aren't trying to make it 3D.

Didn't something similar happen with Sonic Boom, and generic background Sega employees fucked it up?
-
Sonic Boom was random smucks no one knows, and in 3D. It has neither of the qualities I just listed.
-

The Sonic Cycle isn't even consistent anymore with Colors and Generations getting mainly positive reception. While I definitely don't fully trust them with making a "near-perfect" or even "great" game yet, they've actually been learning enough lessons as of late to have Project 2017 be mediocre at worst. Especially since it's probably going to be Generations 2 (claiming that it's not a sequel is an broadly vague statement that could mean anything. It probably just means that the only difference is a more serious story and that the levels are all new this time). They've been playing it too safe to make anything as much of a cringeworthy and gimmicky mess as Shadow or '06.
And Mania is going to most likely be spectacular, of course. Interestingly, it's been confirmed to have a story and will have a reason as to why Team Sonic is going through reimagined zones from 1, 2, 3, &K, and CD as well as completely new levels. I don't expect anything much more than the "cutscenes" in 3&K story wise, but the levels might actually sensibly lead into each other like in 3&K to feel like a more cohesive world rather than say, crossing from Casino Night to Hydrocity Zone.
-
this game look so beautiful
i think im going to enjoy playing a sonic game for the first time since sonic generations
time to erase sonic lost world and sonic boom from my memories -
Have you guys seen this?!
I am flipping out over the potential here! This is what I want 3D Sonic to become some day! I understand Sega's social media took notice and gave the developer internet thumbs up basically, I just hope they take some notes and give us a Sonic game like this some day. So much can be done with this gameplay!
-
Basically Sonic 3D Blast…..in actual 3D.

This blew me away. I noticed that the entire level is like a playground, which reminded me of the levels in the Tony Hawk Pro Skater games and how your big tricks are earned through your skill and knowledge of the level.
If you say SEGA saw this and liked it, maybe they're working some of the gameplay mechanics into Project Sonic 2017 or sooner or later they may hire these guys to help with a Sonic game in the future, like Christian Whitehead.
-
Yeah, that looks fantastic. The trick always was (and other games like Okami, and the already mentioned Tony Hawk) that to allow for Sonic's speed, you should have giant open levels with lots of room to play around in.
And instead they decided game after game to go with narrow linear hallways with platforms of death on all sides that punish you for turning at all or missing a hard to judge 3D jump or auto-trail.
I mean, Mario 64 basically had it right out the gate with the big open areas… its main problem was there were no enemies filling the space... but Sonic's speed would have covered that issue. Ah well.
Also cute that Sega is going opposite of Nintendo's shut down policy and encouraging it. But that's because Sega knows they can actually get these people involved later and sell what they're doing, as we're seeing with Sonic Mania.
Also this.
-
Why are they back making 2 d sonic with same graphic as sonic 1
-
Found this great video that perfectly summarizes Sonic's history just by reviewing the first levels from each game.
-
Game Informer has a piece in their November issue detailing the well documented quality issues that have plagued the games since Xtreme.
And couple of things stuck out, while I knew 06 was rushed to hell. What I didn't know was how Sega cut corners with the
production of Sonic Adventure 2 by significantly scaling cutting down on the development staff and did some weird shit with
Sonic Heroes by apparently splitting half the development team between America and Japan leaving the later levels of the
game to apparently be finished up by Iizuka alone. What the holy hell was Sega trying to do?

Is it online anywhere that isn't behind a paywall?

^ Apparently no.

I see free-roam 3D Sonic fan games are booming lately, and this one's no exception. I played this one myself and I love how big and explorable Green Hill Zone is in Sonic Utopia (with an awesome secret). Sonic's model kinda looks like a fusion of the CD, OVA and Saturn styles, which are my favorite and the hedgehog himself controls perfectly, even when reaching high speeds. And the Green Hill remix played gives me life.
To think, that all of this was made by four people is just mindblowing!

Man that looks incredible

You know… why do these games even need Sonic the Hedgehog?
With some original characters and minor changes to the art style that game could really sell on steam.

It's called "Freedom Planet."

Bada Bing, Bada Boom.
The new stage, Mirage Saloon, is inspired by a scrapped zone from Christian Whitehead's port of Sonic CD. I was hoping for Desert Dazzle to return in some form after Sonic Mania was announced.
!
-
My hype levels for Sonic Mania are going through the roof. Already pre-ordered the collector's for PC. Game is looking fantastic.
-
Desert Dazzle, reborn as Mirage Saloon. The pianos gave me flashbacks of Music Plant from Sonic Advance 2 and I like the gun cannons and the Team Hooligan (Fang, Bean and Bark) posters. I can't wait to play this zone!
Now to look for the music… -
Reminds me of Sonic Advance.
-
I wouldn't mind if Amy was playable in this game similar to Sonic Advance, although I'm sure it has no chance of happening.

I think it was near the beginning? She was talking about there being Classic levels from "Sonic 1, 2, 3 and even CD."
