Out of Curiosity: Who Else Made This Mistake?

Recently, I watched a video featuring a guy narrating the One Piece characters that are in Jump! Ultimate Superstars for Nintendo DS. I don't think this guy was particularly familiar with One Piece, because he mispronounced Luffy's name (luff-ee instead of loo-fee). I'm not holding this against him, as it's an easy mistake to make and, in fact, one I myself made when I first got into One Piece. Which led me to thinking:

How many people here on this very forum made that identical mistake (calling Luffy "Luff-ee") and how/when did you learn what the name was intended to sound like?

As I said, I made it myself at first. It was an early issue of US Shonen Jump (I forget the exact one) that corrected me. It specifically pointed out the proper intended pronunciation of Luffy's name.

I've made this mistake, that and I pronounced Usopp YOU SOPP =_= The dub actually corrected me.

I also pronounced eiichiro (as in eiichiro oda =_=) wrong a lot. I pronounced it eee chi row. It's eh e chi row.

I always Pronounced Ussop as OO-Soppa and Luffy as Loo-fee or Luf-fee

I never made that mistake, as I've heard the name Luffy before.

I originally pronounced Usopp as oo-soap for some reason.

I didn't have the problem with Luffy. However, when I was starting watching One Piece, I pronounced Usopp as Usoppu since that what it sounded like when they said it (like Enel sounding like Eneru). I learned how to pronounce it properly watching the 4kids dub of all things.

My roommate thought it was Luff-ee until she heard me say his name while talking to someone else. On an unrelated note, she also thought that Chopper was a squirrel at first. And then recently, a guy in our computer group said that Chopper was a bear and that his human form was Papa Bear. :w00t:

Yep that's the one. I saw one for Naruto, too, and wanted to try and see Franky in-game (so far I'v eonly encountered him once but not unlocked him).

You need to get like… 8 points more than the other team. It's not that hard considering the retarded bots fly off the arena at fucking warp speed. Ice level ftw.

I only just got the game yesterday, so I'm not that far yet. I'm currently on the Prince of Tennis world (did the other two sets and now on the sports worlds) trying to do a stage where you fight as Goku [I'm trying to knock out four guys with Support characters])

Probably everyone who speaks English and hadn't heard it before hand made the mistake.

I was okay with Luffy cause I thought it sounded cuter than luff-ee, but I had nooooo idea how to say Usopp as my introduction to One Piece was the manga version. I just mentally didn't read it until I learned how it was pronounced.

I could pronounce luffy's name fine at first, but Usopp was a different story, I called him USS-OP

I never had this problem. The first time I ever saw Luffy's name was on a commercial that said it.

Usopp was in the same boat, I heard it pronounced before I saw it written.

Yes, I always pronounced is Loofy, even reading the comic before.

I started out watching the anime first, so I never mispronounced any of their names.

When I first picked up the comic, I always read it as "Luh-fee". After a while I thought, "Wait, do they pronounce it that way in Japanese?"

I read the manga before the anime was released, so I had no idea how to pronounce Lucci's name. I just pronounced it as "Lucy" (forgive me XD) for a while, but my dad kept on saying that it was "Loo-Chi" due to the "cci" in his name. I didn't believe that until I saw the anime. XD;

My first encounter with the names was from the raw Japanese episodes, and my second was with the raw Japanese manga. Because of that exposure, I never had a problem with the actual name pronunciations. I will admit, however, that had I seen the Romanisation of "Luffy" before actually hearing his name in the Japanese anime or reading it in katakana, I probably would have thought that it was pronounced "Luff-ee" as well.

And I think that Generic_Soda is right; I've seen some of the German dub, which I actually like some of the voices for, and I'm pretty sure that Luffy's name was Germanised as Ruffy. That's also what is written as the Germanisation in the SBS from volume 26.

In Brazil Luffy was romanized as Ruffy too.

I never had trouble by pronouncing Usopp's name. However, it can't say the same about guys like Shoujou, Helmeppo, Aisa and Jabura. I remember I called "Jay-Bura", "Asia" and "Hell-Meppo" :S

Never made the mistake, due to the fact the first time I was introduced to One Piece was the dub, before that I only saw Luffy a few times in Jump and stuff and went "Wtf...is this from some sort of "Gilligan Island" manga?".

I have never mis-pronounced an OP charecter's name, I am happy to say. Well, I was saying Blueno as BLEW-NO, but I changed to BURU-NO, since that's how the japanese pronouce it in the anime.

Except Japanese don't say "R", that consonant actually sounds a bit closer to an L than an English R. And the first U is supposed to be silent.

But by that logic, Impel Down, Edward Elric should be Edoaado Erurikku. And he's not. With One Piece, although a lot of it IS based on Japan and Japanese names, not ALL of it is. There's no way to write 'Blueno' directly in katakana, so it has to be written 'Buruno', so the voice actors say 'Buruno'… but it's still 'Blueno'.

I usually pronounce names according to the romanization, if one exists. 'Luffy' has a double consonant, which shortens the vowel before it - so Lufy would be 'loo-fee' but Luffy would be 'luh-fee'. Hurray for English, you beautiful completely sense-making language, you.

I don't recall ever making an mispronuciations of anyones name, since by the time I read Luffy vs Kuro in JUMP, I was in my 2nd year of japanese, and knew how to pronouce it correctly, though me and a friend (who was in the same class as me) would screw around and mispronounce the words on purpose, just for fun.

EXACTLY how it went with me. It seriously looks like it should rimeqith "Fluffy", not sound like "Rufi".

Exactly. My rule is, if there's no romanization, and it's not apparently a western name, pronounce it as you'd read Japanese or how they say it in the anime. But if it is romanized, or if it's clearly not a Japanese name (like Paulie or Rob Lucci) then I pronounce it the way the name is supposed to be pronounced from it's origin, not the way the Japanese say it with a Japanese accent. Like I am not going to pronounce Paulie "Powlie" like they do in the anime.

Luffy, I heard it first in the anime dub, but my brother insists on screaming "luffie luffie chopper" (evidently crossing the big displayed names in Grand Battle he saw me playing)

Hmm, I don't really remember. The first I knew of One Piece was the dub, and so I got most of the names' pronunciation off that. But I think it took me ages to figure out what Luffy's name actually was. Probably the first bounty poster cleared that up.

If I'm speaking English, I pronnounce names in the English way. If I'm speaking Japanese I say the names in the Japanese way. And after 4 years of Japanese, I avoid speaking the language at all unless I'm actually talking to a Japanese person.

I think I should write "Japanese" a few more times here just for good measure.

The u's after the o's aren't supposed to be pronounced, they just mean you hold the O sound longer. So Shoujou is just "Show-joe".
Aokiji is pronounced more like "Ow!" (Ah+oh)
And Fukurou is "Foo-koo-row" (oo representing long U sound)

I remember thinking "What kind of a name is Luffy? Is it supposed to sound like Fluffy?" then right after I heard it pronounced before I could decide how to pronounce it myself. Since I saw the dub first, Usopp was never a problem, but hearing "usoppu" was a surprise.

It's been surmized that it might refer to the "luff" of a ship, although that is pronounced like "fluff". I would kind of like to know how Oda decided upon that name. He probably just tried to think of something silly. Most of the other names have some kind of meaning to them though.
