Pixar has some pretty stout competition this year though. Ponyo will probably get nominated while Fantastic Mr. Fox (which probably has the best shot of beating Up) and Coraline almost certainly will. The Princess and the Frog is a lock. Generally speaking, there's always an odd pick in there as well just to round up the category, but it's really not necessary this year though either Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Monsters vs. Aliens, or Ice Age: Age of the Dinosaurs will probably still be nominated anyway just to avoid pissing somebody off.
The Frog Princess (2D!!)

Shrek 4?
There was a Shrek 3?
-
@robbybedfart:
Shrek 4 is being advertised as the final Shrek movie, so there is that.
(Except for the fact Shrek 5 is already in development, as is the puss N' Boots spinoff film… Gosh, could the Shrek 4 advertisements be... LYING to us to drive up ticket sales?)
Seriously? Shrek 5 is in development? Ah, that is some bullshit right there (that they're advertising the 4th as the last).
Shrek 4?
There was a Shrek 3?
Regrettably, yes.

Huh, you just made me realized how many great (and not-so-great) animated movies there were this year. As for the Oscars, Up is a shoe-in for a nomination and PatF might be too. If there was any justice Ponyo would be nominated, but it may be overlooked due to its lack of popularity. Same goes for Fantastic Mr. Fox, but I haven't seen it. I don't think Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Ice Age, or Monsters vs. Aliens will make it though. After all, I think the Academy Awards only pick 3 nominations for best Animated Film (at least, they usually do)
-
I would be downright amazed if Fantastic Mr. Fox didn't get nominated since it's already won two major awards from critics and has appeared on quite a few Best of The Year lists. Of course, there have been somewhat baffling decisions made by the Academy before, but I don't see that fate befalling Mr. Fox.
Now, winning is a different matter as Pixar films have beat better films at the box office before.

Hmm, well like I said I haven't seen it and I haven't followed it's popularity/career, but we'll see.

Such as?
Anyway, after doing some research, I've discovered that there have always been 3 nominations for best Animated Feature since it was established in 2001, except for 2002 in which there were 5 five nominations. Incidentally, this was also the year that Lilo and Stitch was nominated, and it was up against Ice Age, Spirit, Treasure Planet (blah), and of course Spirited Away. Needless to say, it (and the rest of the movies for that matter) didn't stand a chance of a snowball in hell.
Anywho, barring another exception like we got in 2002, my ideal nomination list would be Ponyo, Up, and Princess and the Frog.
-
Ponyo better not get nominated. It's best we not stoke Miyazaki's already inflated ego.
-
kung fu panda is getting 5 sequels
madagascar is the worst though, because it was unfunny crap to begin with

Did Sony do Monsters versus Aliens too? The style seems similar.

Ponyo was great, dude. But what do you mean he's got a huge ego? I've never seen him in interviews or anything, but I have loved all of his movies that I've seen. Especially Castle In the Sky.
-

no, dreamworks (which is why it suuuuucked IM A MONSTER NOBODY UNDERSTANDS MY FEELINGS I CAN HAVE EMOTIONS TOO)
it'll probably get more confusing when Despicable Me and Ubermind come out
-
I still have yet to see The Fantastic Mr Fox, is it really that good?
It has a rat with a French accent played by Willem Defoe and has a scene set to "Street Fightin' Man" by the Rolling Stones. So really that good doesn't even begin to cover it.
Hmm, well like I said I haven't seen it and I haven't followed it's popularity/career, but we'll see.
It didn't do that well at the box office, but I don't think that hurts its chances really.
Such as?
Ratatouille.

I'm betting on at least five myself with those three, Fantastic Mr. Fox and/or Coraline and, again, one other random film.
-

Even if that were true, that's one ego that certainly deserves to be inflated.
kung fu panda is getting 5 sequels
Please tell me you're exaggerating.
It didn't do that well at the box office, but I don't think that hurts its chances really.
Too true. I don't think being successful at the box office has ever been a real requirement to be nominated or win an award (it doesn't hurt though).
Ratatouille.
Eh, I know a lot people don't like that movie, but personally I really liked it. And I never saw Persepolis (shame on me, I know).
I'm betting on at least five myself with those three, Fantastic Mr. Fox and/or Coraline and, again, one other random film.
I do think that would be awesome if we get another five film nomination list this year. There certainly are enough contenders.
no, dreamworks (which is why it suuuuucked IM A MONSTER NOBODY UNDERSTANDS MY FEELINGS I CAN HAVE EMOTIONS TOO)
Yeah, I know a lot of people despise DreamWorks, but, IMO, it's had a fairly decent career and has made some genuinely good movies. As far it's 3D animation career:
Antz, despite being a bit overlooked, was very good. Shrek was awesome and Shrek 2 was a worthy follow-up. Shark Tale was abyssmal. Madagascar was okay. I only saw the first half hour of Over the Hedge, but from what I saw it was pretty good. Shrek the Third was terrible. Bee Movie I didn't see, but I heard it was awful. Kung Fu Panda and Madagascar 2 were good. And I didn't see Monsters vs. Aliens, but I've heard it was anywhere from decent to bad.
So yeah, not exactly a stellar track record, but they do provide some worthy competition to Disney. And as for the new How to Train Your Dragon movie…...well, there's an old saying in Hollywood (and if there isn't, there should be) that you can make a movie about whatever you want, but whatever you do don't make it about dragons (see Dragonheart, Eragon, Reign of Fire, etc.). Now who knows, maybe Dreamworks will be able to break that vicious cycle...........but, I'm not holding my breath.

@Syan:

The entire purpose for creating Ponyo is because someone said he'll never create another character as iconic as Totoro, in the sense of "it's a character so perfect and timeless all generations can love him". Miyazaki took that as an insult, and Ponyo is his attempt at creating a new cultural icon.
His older movies tend to be the better ones…though I liked Spirited Away, Howl and Ponyo were easily steps down from the legend of Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa. Heck, some people say everything he's done has been derivative of Nausicaa…
-
Madagascar 2 was good.
how can you like that movie
And as for the new How to Train Your Dragon movie…...
any movie by chis sanders is a movie i'll probably enjoy
-
"Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" was hilarious. I was shocked how good that was.
I was shocked at how good that movie was. Madagascar 1 was okay, but 2 was uneventful and very much forgetable. I often forget that I saw it once.
Monsters vs Aliens was okay, I thought. The alien and Bob were the best things of the movie.
-
"Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" was hilarious. I was shocked how good that was.
Mr. T was such a badass
i love cartoons that are really goofy and don't take anything seriously
-
Oh god YES! Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was frickin HILLARIOUS! The best parts of the whole movie, I will say without ANY hestitation, were when the Dad would raise his eyebrows up to reveal his eyes. I laughed so hard i cried the first time
Also Flint's so nutty who can't help but love him?
-
I'd completley written off Cloudy with Meatballs as obvious garbage from the trailers but… the lot of you are saying its good?
Really?
Guess I may have to check it out then.
-
My bf was telling me how everone was telling him Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was really good and a must see. Totally caught me off guard,I was like, really? It really doesn't suck? I remember reading the storybook when I was a kid though, which seems very different.
I haven't seen Ponyo but that little creepy fish thing scares me.
-
Ponyo isn't Miyazaki's best, but dammit I got that "enchanted feeling" watching it, so he did something right.
The fish-girl I didn't care about as much, but I loved her parents, the sea wizard Fujimoto (played awesomely by Liam Neeson in the dub) and the sea goddess Gran Mamare. I think that the (yet another) awesome score by Joe Hisaishi helped too.

i think i'm going to buy it, because i rented it and watched it twice
it was the same way with Surf's Up, which was retardedly awesome (and made me want to learn how to surf) but i actually was able to see that multiple times in theaters (because i worked there when it came out)
it's like they've mastered the art of being Dreamworks, but making movies that are off the chain come from behind awesome
-
Surf's Up is one I've been meaning to see. Mostly because I thought it was awesome that they got Napoleon Dynamite to voice a surfing chicken.

I'm in the same boat as you, robby. I remember reading the book growing up, but dismissed the movie. Might have to hit the local Blockbuster sometime this week to check it out.
-
i like to give bad movies at least the honor of watching them
that's why i went and saw space chimps in theater :cwy:
because… i know that somewhere, an animator just like me worked really hard on it, and even if the story is unbearable, i can watch it because i know some poor guy who probably would have loved to be working on a pixar film instead, got to put bread on the table for his family because of crap movies like A SHARK'S TALE
-
I can sympathize with that, taboo. After all, it doesn't hurt to watch a bad movie now and then. But there are some things that are just…...unforgivable.

The animated Titanic movie, for instance.
Or this:

Don Bluth's career must be spinning in its grave.
-
They made a Secret of NIMH sequel? I can laugh at Titanic but I can't bear to click on that link.

No matter how bad you think it is, it's about half again as awful as that.
-

Don't, it's not worth it. watched it way back when as a stupid child Y_Y
-
Considering how much I love NIMH, the existence of a shitty direct-to-video sequel for it makes me literally angry with rage. Much different than the hilarious awfulness (in more ways than one) of Animated Titanic.
-
Wow, a NIMH sequel, I wish I didn't know that.
-
As long as we're talking about shitty direct-to-video sequels of Don Bluth's movies, did any of y'all know hear about this either?

for a second i thought that was Fievel Goes West

Worst crime of all? That movie backhanded retconned the second movie (and tv series!) into "just a dream" and de-aged the characters back into their first movie versions.
It did this in the first 30 seconds or so and I stopped watching it at that point. No telling what other horrors it may have brought about.
I assume they did this sheerly so they could use someone's fanfic that took place in manhattan.
Oh. and apparently there's a fourth one. But even Cartoon Network won't show it, so it must be REALLY bad.
-
Jeez, what's next?
An American Tail: The Great Depression or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Stock Market.
-
I like that, even though we have specific threads for Disney, Pixar, non-disney animated movies, and specific movies like Up and Frog Princess… somehow the threads always manage to float into the other topics.
I suppose its a result of comparing one thing to another, but still. wierd. Or interesting. Not sure which.

I wished I didn't watch that Titanic vid. Now my life is ruined.

Well, there's Nobodyman's suggestion about the Great Depression. Bankers and Wall Street almost killing this country are as American as apple pie, baseball, and poor taste in movies.
Far as those sequels go, it saddens me to think that Don Bluth has directed only eleven films total when the Land Before Time series alone has twelve sequels.
-
Obviously American Tale is on its way into becoming the new Land Before Time.

I actually have a pitch for the movie plot. Ahem…
Things finally start to seem to be getting back to normal for Fievel as he adjusts to his new life in America. However, things start to turn south for him and his family after the Great Depression hits. Nobody knows exactly what caused it, but Fievel is determined to find out as he embarks on a new quest to fix the national economy. On his journey he must face tellers, bankers, treasurers, and the evil Katty McGoldburg who has been hording all the money for himself and may be the true culprit behind the Great Depression. Also, replacing Dom Deluise as Tiger, is the hilarious (yet, horribly miscast) Brad Garrett. Join Fievel in his greatest adventure yet. It's chocked full of excitement, adventure, and anti-semitic undertones.
Also, in a hilarious subplot, Fievel's dad, having lost his job, contemplates whether or not to throw himself off a water fountain.
It's good clean family fun!
Far as those sequels go, it saddens me to think that Don Bluth has directed only eleven films total when the Land Before Time series alone has twelve sequels.
You know, with all this talk about crappy sequels to Don Bluth movies, I cannot believe I overlooked the LBT sequels. 12 stupid shitty-ass sequels, of which I am guilty of watching and enjoying four of as a kid.
Obviously American Tale is on its way into becoming the new Land Before Time.
Run while you still canWell, it's got its work cut out for it.
Oh, and let's not forget this.
Wait, scratch that, let's try with all our MIGHT to forget about it!

Obviously American Tale is on its way into becoming the new Land Before Time.
Run while you still canWhy, whatever do you mean? A brilliant piece like Land Before Time is a one of a kind; it's not like they butchered the characters by re-using them in 50 cheesy musicals for kids or something horrific like that LALALA I CAN'T HEEEEAR YOOOOU. >_<
And to get it back onto PatF, here's a funny little extra clip from the official Youtube channel:
iTtPzeRjhLA
They also have the Japanese and international movie trailers, clips from the movie (sigh I love 'Almost There''s animation…<3), and other lil' things.
