if you were to rival the best axe fighter in the world, i'd say your competance with axes are indeed incredible, but that doesn't mean that axe would be your best way of fighting, and thus making you and definite axe fighter, you could be even better with hand-to-hand combat, which atleast in my eyes would make you a great martial artist.

Anyway, back on topic, like many people mentioned, Mihawk may be better than Shanks in terms of swordplay, but we can't really say who is stronger because it has yet to be proven that Shanks only has swordplay under his belt. I think FFA and many others were trying to point this out but for some reason, this just never gets across to some.
I say they were EQUAL in terms fighting abilities; otherwise they wouldn't really be "rivals". And it may be that Shanks won their latest duel because when Mihawk visited him, he asked if the latter had "come to challenge" him, as if he had been expecting him to come some time or another. But this is speculation.
Mihawk may be "the Swordsman above all the world's swordsmen" and the "Greatest Swordsman in the World", but it doesn't mean he is the one "Invincible Swordsman". If he were indeed that, the WB wouldn't have his current title anymore.
What I'm saying that, sure you may be the best at sword-fighting, but in a real contest, your swords are not the only determining factor in a fight. Heck, even Mihawk could have other things under his sleeves when fighting. There's really no room for argument as to who is above the other.
And, there's nothing that suggests that Mihawk had the "greatest swordsman" title 10 years ago. It could be that both of them (Shanks and Mihawk) had been competing for it, but the title automatically went to Mihawk when Shanks lost his arm. It's not an impossible scenario. Afterall, word DID spread really quickly, seen in the infamous chapt 434, that Shanks lost his arm in East Blue. Mihawk himself didn't even seem interested in fighting Shanks anymore. The thing is, we don't know if Shanks would still lose now after 10 years.
Oh and just for trivias (i think i mentioned this somewhere, but oh well):
Shanks is very similar to another character named Yang Guo in another series called "Return of the Condor Heroes". Both lost their good arm. Both had world-class skills (Yang Guo had learnt skills from a number of prominent teachers that made him a sort of pugilist with different fighting forms) before losing that arm. Both are aged 37 (this sounds like pure coincidence). And Yang Guo became the Strongest Fighter in the land after having trained for 10 years(number seem familiar again?) after losing that arm, by creating his own set of skills (that weren't any form of swordplay). Another character, Zhou Botong, was above the world in terms of skill, but would still lose to Yang Guo because of strength. I'm not saying that Shanks would become the most powerful too, but i'm trying to point out that it isn't impossible for a character to become even more powerful after being "handicapped".

Shanks attacked the strongest man in the world with a sword now if he was more confident with another weapon or style why didn't he use it? Is the strongest man in the world not a challenge to shanks, can he afford to use a weaker style?
No because shanks strongest style cannot beat whitebeard, so if your strongest style cannot beat him why would you use a weaker style? From this scene it has been made painfully obvious that shanks main and strongest style is swordsmanship.
Now I couldn't care less if he has 6,432 different styles the fact of the matter is to battle a person who you cannot defeat you use your best style because your other styles will be ineffective against him.

I think that if any of the big figures that have been so discussed on this thread were to get into a battle they would be so close in strength that after a while it would end up coming into a draw, either both so injured that they cant go on or both so tired that they cant go on.. Being stronger doesnt always mean that you will win…
With Shanks WB and Mihawk, they are all probably so close in terms of power that you really cant say that one would pwn the other becasue the fight would be so intense and so close, that either sides would carry many damages..

No argument here. The Shichibukai are doing exactly what the WG wants them to do: Attacking lands in the New World and "liberating" them, as Doflamingo puts it. Keeping them under survelliance ensures that the Yonkou don't gain control of them.

You should know by now it doesn't matter what weapon you use it's your skill with the weapon that counts. So you don't need a particular weapon to counter another, like I said earlier if this were true zoro would kill luffy in seconds because he doesn't have a weapon.
I can't be bothered providing all the facts in the manga showing that shanks is a swordsman just look back maybe 8-10 pages and it'll explain it all for you

If you are the best swordsman, you are the best swordsman I'd assume. As in better than anyone else who primarily uses a sword. Kaku is considered CP9's best swordsman and he relies heavily on Rankyakus and other things, not just swords. I already pointed out how Zoro even without a sword is skilled. Though I'm merely repeated what I said before, but Shanks could be good at other things, but so can Mihawk. And as long as Shanks uses a sword primarily, he'd be better than him, unless you would also disagree with Whitebeard's title.
indeed you are right. sorry for my earlier statements. i spoke only from the point where WB and Shanks actually clashed, i did not research properly and went along with even less facts than what i was accusing the ones stating that shanks is a swordsman to have.
still, i could argue on your first part of your post, but that would be a waste of either of our time, and has nothing to do with this topic.

hmmm… this is kinda hard, i still speculate on the outcome of a battle between the two, since as archtyrant says (atleast my idea of it :P), the quotation from your post oip, could be interperated otherwise. i do now agree that shanks seems to be a swordsman, but if i read the sentence you quoted again it allso seems that, when shanks had both his arm, his fighting skills could rival with mihawks swordplay.
now if this is just me reaching for an excuse to determine that shanks is the strongest of the two, or if there's some certainty in it, i can not be sure :D

The point was that Kaku was considered a swordsman, best in CP9, yet he didn't fight only with his swords, he relied a lot on other things. To be the best swordsman wouldn't be to only be the best with swords, but above anyone else who also uses swords often enough. He clearly was skilled in another areas aside from swinging his sword, some people consider Shanks not a swordsman because he might be great in other areas, yet Mihawk can be the same.

Shicihbukai are 7 individuals as far as we know. (We know that Mihawk seems to travel alone, Crocodile supposably didn't have a crew, BW was a secret, Jinbei disbanded his crew, DoFlamingo left Bellamy to run his own crew, 4/5, the last one that's been mentioned we don't know much about). The Yonkou have crews of their own. They're not a threat just because of one person, or does Shanks completely outclass everyone in his crew? Whitebeard same with him? Why would Shanks' first action be to ask Marco to join him if he'd be useless?
And the Yonkou don't fight with each other, at least often. Just as the Shicihbukai or Marine HQ don't fight with each other. Whitebeard and Shank's crew considered it not likely for Shanks to try to declare war on Whitebeard, and them meeting was considered such a big thing by the WG. Who knows, if a few Shicihbukai were to join up in a close group, it might cause an uproar.

(We know that Mihawk seems to travel alone, Crocodile supposably didn't have a crew, BW was a secret, Jinbei disbanded his crew, DoFlamingo left Bellamy to run his own crew, 4/5, the last one that's been mentioned we don't know much about). The Yonkou have crews of their own. They're not a threat just because of one person, or does Shanks completely outclass everyone in his crew? Whitebeard same with him? Why would Shanks' first action be to ask Marco to join him if he'd be useless?
Bellamy ran one of many crews, actually. Properly interpreted, Jinbei split his crew into subcrews, and my theory on Crocodile is he lost his crew in a Davy Back fight.
As for Shanks asking Marco to join, Shanks was being an ass. He wasn't serious. But it's pretty obvious Marco's a damn powerful man, especially if he can brush off a 98 million pirate like it's nothing.
And the Yonkou don't fight with each other, at least often. Just as the Shicihbukai or Marine HQ don't fight with each other. Whitebeard and Shank's crew considered it not likely for Shanks to try to declare war on Whitebeard, and them meeting was considered such a big thing by the WG. Who knows, if a few Shicihbukai were to join up in a close group, it might cause an uproar.
They don't fight amongst each other, but they don't work together. For day to day activities, the Shichibukai work alone. But when shit goes down, they all have the same employer, who they receive orders from collectively.
And OIP, we don't need to be spoon fed. You CANNOT, absolutely CANNOT prove that ALL SHANKS DOES is Swordplay. He's a Yonkou and Mihawk isn't. He's got a larger crew, more respect… he has everything BUT the best swordsmanship in the world. You ignore the plurality of SKILLS because it suits you, but the fact remains that Shanks is more than just a swordsman, he's a top pirate, and in that sense, he's stronger than Mihawk. Period.

i would have thought that by now both sides would have done the old tried and true method of agreeing that i cant convince you and you cant convince me so lets just wait til Oda clears it out.
Even if Mihawk is stronger than Shanks, that doesn't mean Shanks would lose every time. There is more to fights than who is stronger, see Crocodile fights 1 and 2.
No I'm telling you the winner would be unknown since this situation has happened before. I never judge characters anymore unless I have clear facts because speculation always backfires.
Well, here are some clear facts.
1: Luffy has a bounty of 300 million and Zoro 120 million. Altough Luffy is the captain, still there shouldn't be that much of an interval between the two. But you can argue taht with me.
2. Luffy always fights the strongest and main villain.
3. Zoro said himself that Lucci would kill them instantly if the would interfere the fight between luffy and lucci.

Did it ever occur to you that Mihawk isn't interested in being a yonkou? I've stated my theory of him joining the shichibukai so that he would be left alone. So if he wanted to be a yonkou that would clash with my theory since the yonkou are wanted by the WG
I haven't ignored anything I know that in the english language you may say the word skills if it is in the same sentence as the the thing you are refering to. Instead of saying this person is extremely skilled with a sword or he has alot of skill with a sword.
Like I've said before I have no problem with you believing he has more than one style but you've yet to convince me that these other styles surpass his swordsmanship. I am only going by what Oda has said and shown
Oh my gosh people, listen to yourselves (or at least read what you are posting). What happened to civil debates? I have just read through last 8 pages of this thread and concluded that we are squabbling like 5 year olds, instead of being mature about this.
Anyway, about this argument. Mihawk, according to Oda, is the strongest swordsman, rendering all the other swordsmen below him. So far, the only information on Shanks' combat ability shows that he is a swordsman, the proof being that he clashed with WB using a sword, in a flashback he was seen about to unsheash a sword, and not to metion the quote from the databook. And whilst it might be cool for Shanks to possess some other form of combat, we have absolutely no proof that he does (which does not mean that he doesn't, or will acquire any in the future). But to say at this point in time that he definitely has other abilities (Jack-of-all-trades) without solid evidence and defending that opinion by saying there is no proof in the manga to disprove this view, is totally pointless and downright stupid. Using this form of logic I could theorize that Roger has kids with over 80 women from all 4 blues and the GL in his attempt to spread the Will of D, and I am willing to bet that no part of the manga to date disproves my statement. IMO the only reason people are so adamant about their belief that Shanks is more than a just a swordsman, is because they can not accept that he could be weaker than Mihawk.

Shanks is a swordsman not a fighter if you show me some proof that he is not a swordsman then I will consider it. The world class skills part is just another way of saying he has world class skill in the usage of a sword. I just presume Oda doesn't believe he has to spoon feed feed people information, but boy was he wrong some people on this site have no idea.

Kabaji and buggy were leagues apart, meow brothers (whatever their called) and kuro were leagues apart, hatchi and arlong were leagues apart, mr1 and crocodile were leagues apart (debatable though since their fruits are special) etc etc and then just when you think luffy is stronger you find out their equal.
Oh and lucci may have been stronger than kaku in the physical stregth department but kaku's a swordsman which doesn't require as much raw strength as a fighter would need. However I do agree lucci is stronger but zoro didn't really have any problems with kaku anyway, just tekkai was in his way, Lets not go off topic though
So if you want to assume luffy is stronger be my guest, as for me I think I'll pass until they fight again
