I speculate it is merely a party trick that only the extremely powerful pirates in the One Piece world can reproduce.

I think that's given but since we've already seen hints at a "rookie" like Luffy performing it, it's going to take a rather important role.

And while yes, it is a useful means of crowd control, like many mysterious plot points in OP, Oda seems to have a 'big picture' use for it. Now, if this means Luffy and the final villain clashing with an enormous battle brewing in the background only to have the two of them knock out basically every pirate and Marine present, so be it. However, although I think Oda will utilize it to that end at least once, I think he has more important plans for it.

Who exactly did Rayleigh take down with it? A few nameless retard guards? For all we know they have wills of cotton. We do know that the 'ambition' can have different levels and is completely controlled by the will of the user if we're to believe WB. This means Rayleigh could just have cranked his ambition level to Stun and took out small-fry.

i mean shanks used sure a stronger aura cause he was on a pirate ship with a lot of "good" fighters,while rayleigh just had to take down some auctio house guards.....also he can control his aura so that he can bunch his aura-power like a laser to knock out certain persons...
their we see that training this ability could lead to much more attacks with this move as just knocking off the sourrounding "weak canon fodder"..

I thought it was obvious all the Strawhats could take it since they were all still conscious after Rayleigh used his "ambition." Seems like Rayleigh used it in a wide area in front of him which explains why Camie wasn't knocked out by it and why the Strawhats all felt it.

in my opinion every SH had to take this aura of rayleigh…but he used some lower aura to knock out meaningless guards...so we could sure assume that all SH have a stronger will-power than these guards and that they didnt have to bear the whole aura-power of rayleigh but sure ALL SH are that strong that they could at least "face" their opponent as long as he didnt use his full power on this aura-move...

Are we assuming that the aura/spirit/ambition/haki isn't felt if you are able to resist it? Because as far as I can see none of the strawhat's react to the aura, instead they are reacting to this wierd man that showed up and cleaned the house somehow.

If Oda wanted to show the strawhats reaction to the aura hitting them he would imo have done so differently then blank/confused/defensive faces. He would atleast have had Usopp down on his knees or gasping for air or something. He wouldn't be asking what just happened.

We aren't gonna have a slow revelation or big deal about Sanji breaking steel. It will just happen. Its not gonna be like, I can feel the breath of my foot and the breath of his armor ect. Thats just stupid. Plus Zoro could cut steel since way back in Arabasta. (yes I know time of One Piece is slow) Is it too strange that finally Sanji can break steel this many arcs later.

If you ask me its a pretty big panel for just Sanji kicking and breaking his iron/copper/bronze or whatever he is wearing. There were plenty of smaller panels of the other SH's just beating em up. Like Robin for example. Whom you would think would need bigger panel to show who she is all attacking.

It mounts you up as one of the higher pirates that no one except those of similar or higher strength would want to entangle with.

We know that Sanji is insanely powerful. We've seen him take on Odz's Gomu-Gomu Bazooka with ease. However that doesn't mean he can break steel yet. The fact that Moria feels they're not ready for the New World says a lot to me. I have little doubt that Sanji will get his next major power up as he learns the reasons why Zeff returned from the Grand Line and Oda'll make a huge thing of him surpassing Zeff in the same way a huge thing was made of Zoro being able to cut steel. And to be fair, not even all of Zoro's attacks seem to be able to cut steel, hence why he's so reliant on The Lion Song. I'm sure he'll improve to the point that all his attacks are capable of cutting steel but for some reason, Oda has decided to keep steel as a bench mark for the monster trio of which they're yet to surpass.

What I'm hoping is that Oda doesn't fall into the aura trap again like he did here. When Shanks used it way back when in chapter 1, it made sense. An animal can be expected to have a will that is much more brittle than that of a person, and he was actually glaring at the Sea King.

And now Raleigh just sort of beams and an entire roomful of people collapse. This was just a cheap way of getting out of the immediate mess. To be honest, I could do without the concept altogether.

I like Sanji a lot and would love it if he could break steel with his everyday kicks but it ain't gonna happen. You only need to look at the big deal that was made of Zeff's steel breaking/moulding abilities to see what i mean with that. It's a benchmark in One Piece, it will not be an event that will go un-emphasized.

EDIT: Also, i think it's important to note that Sanji hasn't even had a moment of great personal accolade yet. He hasn't come close for a little while actually. He sat out the major one on one battles on Skypiea. No one will ever talk of his victories on TB or EL. And for all of his worth, Mister Two wasn't exactly a world famous pirate. Sanji's moment for steel will come as he does a world famous style feat. Something that'll get in the papers, not before then, i believe Oda's holding him back/building him up for very good reason. The fact that he's a main fighter of the Mugiwara and isn't considered a supernova, only makes me that much more excited in anticipation.

See, and this is not based on any solid proof, it seems that people without solid dreams, ambition or drive can succumb to it. This automatically makes most of our crew safe from something relatively subdued. But if you're just some asshole fighting for nothing, BAM! you're done. Doubt it has anything to do with physical strength and is entirely based on your drive. Kinda like the Force n' shit.

I'm not saying that definitely won't use that move but I'd be disappointed if he does. I'd find it a lot better if it remains what it appears to be know, which is a skill with a personal flavour to it. Shanks and Rayleigh are connected as ar Luffy and Shanks. It could be the "he comes just after me" touch to it, which could fit with the passing down from one generation to the other thing.

And if somebody like Whitebeard uses it then this would ruin this flavour. It would be boring if everyone could use it. Sure, he's the worlds strongest man, but does it mean that he must have mastered every battle skill? I hope not.

marco had to explain this to the other pirates on WB-ship..(which should know that ability cause sailing with WB should mean you will see a lot of strong guys...and this was the first time for a lot of rookies to see such a aura....marco already met shanks before..)

Well only partly. I don't think that Rayleigh has it from Roger. If he has it from someone else, then I'd prefer someone from the previous generation. It doesn't have to be Roger. I mean, the Strawhats themselves show how cool the supporting cast can be so Right Hand of the Pirate King works well for my liking.

That's why I spoke of "Luffy's potential" on the previous page. While I consider it something that can be sharpened (=trained) as with all skills it works best if you have potential for it. And Luffy taking down Motobaro without knowing how would actually be the foreshadowing of his potential here. But some little explenation of Rayleigh could actually change Luffy's view on what he thought to be an accident and makes him start trying to figure out how he can fully use that skill.

But it was actually stated that he broke the steel door. Just as it's been noted when Zoro does his steel cutting. With Sanji, you're right, Zoro normally gets the second strongest opponent. However, in a recent SBS question, the question of who would win between Sanji and Zoro was raised once more and Oda dodged the question. Given that he selects the questions that are printed, i feel he's done this on purpose. Which i'm hoping means that just as Sanji had to sit out a big fight in one of the arcs, Zoro will do the same, allowing Sanji to fight a more infamous fighter. Hopefully a famous fishman karate user.

BTW, Oda recently also revealed that fishman are the off spring of mermaid and human mating. Whether this will be a big thing or not, i have no idea but i found it interesting that he said that.

O: Cocoro-san came here from Fishman Island out of her respect for Tom-san, when she was a young mermaid. She married a young human man from Water Seven, their half-fishman son married another human, and THEIR daughter was Chimney. Chimney is therefore 1/4 mermaid, so she's a very good swimmer. It was only her mermaid blood that helped such a little kid save Luffy in Chapter 403, Volume 42, as he drowned.

So using this as a basis, i surmise the gyojin (3/4 mermaids) are descendants of humans and what are now considered fishman are in fact the offspring of half fishman (according to the above) and mermaids mating.

What mess? The Strawhats were demolishing all the guards. Rayleigh just decreased the time for the inevitable. Not by much either.

Also, as to human will being stronger, this is why Luffy's will so far has only affected Bisons. Because he isn't as strong as Rayleigh or Shanks yet.

If he gets stronger, his aura will be enough to take out humans.

Strong Guys=Strong Aura=Knocked out Bisons

Super-Strong Guys=Super-Strong Auras=Knocked out people.

i think were gonna see great future double spreads where the top 3 crew members knock out entire weak ass's leaving the strong or the weakened scared to death.

I'm looking forward to seeing theses kind of double spreads but i realise that oda won't be trying to use auras in battle

Zoro is the only one i see doing this and hes done it so far. But it hasn't been like overpowering the enemy then he beats them with a simple slash. But its used to amplify the power and change in Zoro's abilities which i like.

Maybe luffy will use aura with his battle style ditching gears, i don't want luffy dieing as he finds one piece and with these gears thats whats gonna happen

Basically, the spirit burst thing suits the mugiwara because they don't like to kill and as they get stronger and get into deeper waters it will become harder not to kill the weaklings. If they could do spirit bursts on EL, they'd have saved themselves A LOT of bother.

I really wonder what you thought it was exactly. I mean when shanks first showed it way back then, I was like sweet he intimidated the shit out that seaking. Then later when he was on the ship I was like holy crap he can send out the vibe and make others faint and even crack the wood a bit on the ship. And I'm sure many of you also thought that was pimp of him.

Now when Rayleigh does it, you all go beserk about it, when still we don't have a full explanation and seems to be the exact same as way back when, when we first saw it. I sort of understand what Crossword is trying to say. In both of the cases that Shanks used the aura ability, his victims were focusing on him and realized how dangerous he was. When Rayleigh just did it, almost noone knew he was in the room and, if they did they didn't know who he was. This gave his spirt burst a sort of Professor Xavier psychic burst type of quality rather than an intimidation quality like Shanks' was shown to be.

I suggest you take another look at page 16 of chapter 503.
They did notice that they were prisoners, that somehow got free on their own, and was pretty intimidated by the idea of taking them on (at least the giant).

It is not even about that.

People are basing their conjectures on superficial results.

People are getting the wrong impression of what the aura is.

Used to all that generic telekinetic crap from a million other series, they are wrongfully thinking that this power is some sort of mind power which is similar to abilities like moving things with your mind or remote viewing.

This couldn't be further from the truth.

The Aura is not even remotely connected to the Psychic world.

It is about the pure will of a person being so powerful that it overwhelms other people with weak resolve.

When you are being stalked by a rapist, do you not feel a murderous intent?

When you are watching a dramatic film, do you not feel emotional from the actor's actions?

It is the exact same thing here but merely amplified by typical "shonenity"

The pure feelings of a person are so strong that other people can actually feel them. Naturally, one does not have to be aware of the other person.

After all, when one is suddenly being stalked, does he not feel something is off all of a sudden.

It is simply a case of this feeling being so strong that the person cannot handle all that will power. It makes pure sense from a neutral point of view (considering Shonen Law) and is not even remotely connected to psychics.

Buildup and the background music helps amplify that considerably. Without it… that would need a REALLY good actor.
