I never truly picked up on it until Funimation showed that the series made sense. Afterwards, I started the manga at Davy Back and later on backtracked. I soon learned that One Piece was truly a treasure I'll keep with me forever.
How did you first start liking One Piece?

Volume 6! <3
It was the first volume of One Piece that I read. And even though I had no idea what was going on in the story, I still thought it was pretty funny and awesome. I wasn't able to continue reading though because there were no other volumes available in the library at that time (didn't feel like reading it on the internet). Nevertheless, my interest never faded.
A few months later, the first volume was finally on shelf in the library. I wasted no time and started reading. By the end of chapter one, I knew, I just knew, that I'm going to follow this series through until it ends. After finishing it, I went home and decided to search the internet for scanlations (which is what I should've done earlier). I became an obsessed fan when Nami asked Luffy for help in the Arlong Arc. That scene still remains as my favourite scene. T.T
So yay, I thank all the gods known to mankind for that day in the library, around 2 years ago, when the 6th volume of One Piece was on the shelf waiting for me to pick it up. lol :D I haven't enjoyed reading a manga this much before.
-
I just stumbled across Sogeking's theme thingy on youtube by accident and decided it looked fun so I started to watch the anime from the beginning, which hooked me, after which I began following the manga, too.
The 4kids dub was just never broadcasted in my country, so I didn't have any biased opinions to begin with. :D I'm sure that if I had seen that one first, I would have dropped it straight away and never would've picked it up again
-
When I first got into One Piece, I read it in a volume of SJ that I bought at a book fair in 7th grade. I read Chapter 25: Lies( I believe) and when I was done reading the excerpt that SJ had in that volume…I was like "Oh, my God. I need to keep reading this!" and so I did and then I watched that damn'd 4kids version of the anime...and didn't really care what was going on...it was One Piece...and I wanted to watch it even though it was kind of embarassing when that rap came on... ._.; (Then I turned 13 and fell in love with Zoro) xD
I didn't know anything about scanlations...and my internet connection sucked back then, but then I ran across a very nice and cute One Piece forum that got me into reading the scans and watching the episodes online. :3 (too bad that forum shut down...) By this time I was completely in "love" with Zoro.
Now everything's great. i <3 1 peace XD

It was some years ago when I first came in contact with One Piece and Naruto. It was the issue that was in the Kuro arc for One Piece and Kuro was just about to start his plan(by carving up Merry pretty nicely). I thought that was pretty awesome but didn't hear about it again for some time until it came on the Fox Box.
-
i believe it was from watching a dubbed episode
-
I was bored in college, I had been reading it in Shonen Jump so I decided to continue it online. I read everything in two days.
-
As always I was watching afternoon program of RTL 2, a german TV station that airs some animes in the afternoon, while doing my homework. Usually I did rearly notice it as stuff like Pokemon or Kamikaze Kaito Janne was on :P
But then suddenly there was a preview for a new series. This was this trailer.
I was done. I had to watch it!
Half an hour later when i first heard this -
I started off liking the 4Kids dub, then skipped to the Enies Lobby around the time 4Kids got stuck in the Alabasta filler. Then I realized why it was so bad…
-
I knew One Piece from the 4Kids dub. I saw one episode, and hated it. (Ironically, I was trying to watch Sonic X. I don't know why I ever bothered.)
During the time, I was only a Digimon fan in terms of Anime.
Eventually, I saw my first full anime series besides Digimon: Azumanga Daioh. Loving it, I went onto others (Hellsing, Rozen Maiden, Elfen Lied, Chobits, etc).
I eventually discovered AMV Hell. When part 3 came out, I saw a clip that introduced Kaku for the first time ever (it had him and the song "Hip to be Square" by Huey Lewis and the News). I was befuddled, yet interested. I thought he looked awesome.
So, I did some research (didn't know he was from One Piece). Learned as much as I could. I often debated whether to actually watch the series or not (since most of the series that I had watched were about 15-30 episodes). So, I agreed. It was my first series with more than 100 episodes.
I don't regret it. I remember having ZERO interest in Nami, and now Nami is my second favorite character. I remember thinking that Buggy was going to be a stupid villian that I won't see ever again after he is defeated (I like Buggy though). I remember thinking that Zoro and Nami were the OBVIOUS relationship (I'm now LuNa).
I'm so glad I watched this series.
-
Picked up the first volume when it came out in America. Fell in love with it first chapter…er page maybe? I can't be sure. I just got the feeling that it the kind of thing I would want to write. I'm also a huge fan of Toriyama so Oda's unconventional style really drew me in, very expressive and comical.
Progress was slow for a while since I was buying the volumes as they came out in the US and watching the dub on television but finally I got fed up and watched the whole thing online in about a week. Geez.
-
I watched 12 episodes and thought: "Ehh, not much to it, weird art style, what's new on Naruto"
I read the manga because I was bored. Had my first fangasm when I saw Hawkeyes.
Now I think: "One Piece spoilers? No, sorry. Awww. Next day repeat until 'OMGOPSPOILERPIC SO EPIC!' even when the pic is just the cover" as for Naruto, er, I mean Sasuke, it's like watching a screensaver for half an hour. I'm serious.
-
I was bored because Trigun Maximum was taking a summer break, so I wanted to find a new series to keep me occupied. I kept hearing about One Piece and Naruto so I borrowed the first two volumes of each from a kid on the soccer team I coach. Didn't really take to Naruto but fell in love with One Piece because of Chou Chou part of the Buggy story.
-
i bought the volumes 1-2 and just liked it when i got bored of naruto in america cause then it was at that boring training part.
-
I was in 9th grade, I think. My friend had just gotten the first issue of Shonen Jump released here in america. He was letting me read it, and I noticed the series. I still wasn't hooked yet until my friend bought the third movie and let me watch it (because of the bad subtitles though, I thought for the longest that Sanji's name was 'Sunkist' because the manga hadn't got to him in SJ yet for me XD)
Then later on, he bought a bootleg DVD set with eps 1-52. He ended up selling it to me for 1/2 price. I spazzed and loved One Piece more and more. That's when I grew to love it beyond a reason of a doubt. -
I didn't actually get into it until about 6-8 months ago.
Since I don't have cable or satellite TV (only have local), I didn't get much exposure to anime other than the mainstream ones that got onto local broadcasting.
I've had a few incidences of exposure to One Piece before this, several times, but none of them resulted in anything. I just always thought of it as a sort of childish show; it seemed a bit unrefined to me. I think the first thing I saw of it was at a friend's house, who had their TV on Cartoon Network in the background. I noticed that One Piece came on, and it played the intro–I was kind of interested by the narrative intro by the Pirate King. It then started a sort of rap song, and I remember thinking it wasn't too bad, and was kind of catchy (<< HEY, I'm allowed to think what I want). The episode started, and they were on a ship, and some lady with a Texas-sounding accent was sitting on a rail talking down to a bunch of people, and I wasn't really sure what was going on. The lady was talking about things I had no idea about, and all the people on the ship didn't seem to like her, so I assumed she must be a bad guy. I remember the light-green-blue haired girl reminded me of someone (Terra from FFVI...?). We later moved out of the room, though, so I decided to turn off the TV at commercial break and left.A second time that I remember was a shonen jump magazine that was laying open on a living room table at a friend's house. It was open to a page where there were a few people standing with their feet half-submerged in something (which looked like sand). I saw that the guy holding swords couldn't move because his feet were stuck, and someone yelling "Are you crazy?! Cutting your feet--what's that gonna accomplish?" or something like that. Then, I saw the guy say "Well, don't know til we try, right?" and raise his swords, about to cut his feet. I was kind of surprised, and was all like "whoa, that guy is hardcore", and then I looked and saw that it was One Piece. I was kind of interested, and I wanted to turn the page, but it wasn't my house, and I didn't think it would be polite (and...ahh...hmm....I was kind of embarrassed to mention that I was interested in One Piece), so I didn't. I ended up being called over somewhere else, and I didn't follow up from there.
A few months later, AMV Hell 4 comes out, and I see a couple One Piece clips in there that were among the better AMVs. I wasn't really directly interested by that, though. It was a sort of combination of going around and finding out that One Piece is one of the most popular anime in Japan, and my brother coming up to me and asking, "Hey, you know...One Piece? I kind of want to watch that," and I was like, "Ah!! I was thinking of the same thing! I'll go find it, then,".
So! I go to search for One Piece subtitled (since I read that the dub is horrible and ruined the show), and I find Kaizoku-Fansubs. I see that they have 10-episode batches, and I felt, "Hrrmmmff, I was hoping they'd have larger batches", since I'm used to downloading all episodes of an anime at once. (I'm usually not the 'keep-up-to-date' type) I ended up downloading the first three 10-batches. I watched the first one, and thought the opening was a bit too settled compared to the rap (Hey! I can have my own taste! Besides, I like We Are! much more now), but I thought the first episode gave a very welcoming, simple intro that wasn't trying to overwhelm you or anything. I later re-watched the first episode with my brothers, and they wanted to keep watching; we watched til the third episode before we needed to go to dinner.
Bwahahah! But we were already hooked by then!
I later found a way to get my computer to play them on our large HD TV, and the rest is history. This anime's the first one that I've been willing to constantly keep up to date on (Naruto and Bleach I've watched up to the point where I caught up, and then stopped).
Hm. That was kind of long, huh...?
-
I've known about One Piece for a very long time,
but never gave it a chance partly because of
what seemed to be at the time, and I quote my friends,
a "lame pirate story appealing only towards 5 year olds".But it wasn't until late 2004 or early 2005
I decided to give One Piece a chance.
Searched up the OP manga online and HUZZA~!
I fell in love. It wasn't until Chopper's background
was revealed that I was fully addicted.
-
Damn am i the only one with a lame ass story? I saw a comercial, thats it. God is op taht horribly talked about that u all had to have inner debates about watching it?
-
Saw 4kids dub. Did'nt like it. Tracked down original. Liked it. History.
-
went on a holiday trip to forget about a freshly-broken-up relationship. knew one piece from before, but bought my first manga far far away from my hometown in northern germany.
p.s. the one ex-gf and i are back to the state of friends and i thanked her, for forcing me into something that great as OP is. she likes it as well, as she told me recently.before that incident, i did not trust OP too much, because we had a freak in our class, who was not the sympathic outsider-not-football-player-type-freak, but the take-a-pencil-and-push-it-into-your-neighbors-legs-type-freak and he likes OP as well… i was worried about my state of mind xD
thank gothness i found my way to OP later on.
-
Well, I finished some history test in 6th grade and I noticed this kid next to me had volume 1 in his binder. Having nothing to read, I asked to borrow it for the day. He agreed. Thusly I started reading. I was blown over! I thought Shanks was cool and hot. I thought the Luffy & Devil's Fruit thing was awesome along with the Zoro & Luffy vs Capt Morgan & The Marines. So I was hooked right off the bat
-
I got bored at Books A Million. Walked in the manga area (which was close to the comics, which I read for a few months), and saw One Piece. I knew I seen the tv show a few times and liked it okay. I picked up Vol. 1 and read it. Loved it sense.

Hmm, if I recall correctly, it was in the early 2006. Back then I… blushes ... didn't know what the heck was anime and manga. Well, don't blame me, where I live, nobody cares about this stuff, and if I was to ask everyone around me, around 75% wouldn't know that it exists... -_-'
So, continuing on the topic, I was searching for animated pictures for MSN (in french, it's "image animée", so it kinda looks like "anime"), and google image sent me a bunch of anime pics. I was like: "WTF is this? It's cute!" So I lurked in some sites. It said that a lot of anime were coming from manga storylines. So I went to Google and typed: "manga". (Google is mah friend =P) And so I discovered on Wikipédia some mangas. At that time I couldn't find animes, I wasn't really clever -_-' (didn't know about Youtube either... LOL, ah I love countryside...) and I found a french site about OP. To be frank, I though the art was horrible... Sanji and Chopper were cute, though. By that time it was like 2006' summer. And after I found a site with like 350 animes on it! O_O. I was in heaven <3. I began to watch Bleach because of the art, but it became boring after the Rukia rescuing arc. I was searching for other anime, but I never found any which was filing my hole. And I reminded myself of the cuteness of Chopper and Sanji, and started watching OP! ^^
Took me half a year watching the whole 270 episodes or so, and after I was like: NOO I want some more! And this is why I began reading the manga online =)

I think it was in March, possibly April, I was really bored. I dropped out of CEGEP a week after the 2nd semester started and I was looking for a job but couldnt really find one. My french isn't to great and I live in Quebec, so I find it kinda difficult. Anways, I was looking for something to do,and I knew about anime since I used to watch bastardized versions of it on FOX on saturday mornings. Back then I had no idea it was bastardized and I thought it was kinda cool. I rememebered some show about pirates very vaguely, I believe I'd seen parts of the Baratie Arc and the Zoro backround story ep. So I went on anime6.org , a site my friend suggested and checked it out. I watched the first ep and I was hooked. In just a little under a month I watched all 353 episodes. Now I anxiously wait each week for a new one to be released. I read a scanlation of the first chapter of the manga, but I decided I prefer reading with something solid in my hands, so I'll probably be picking up the Viz manga, unless someone suggests otherwise.

It happened when I was young. Whenever I was at a store and I had some cash in my wallet, I had this feeling that I just had to buy something, 'cause it felt good coming home with something new to do. I had $8.50, and I saw the manga section at a Hastings, and the only volume they had there that I was slightly fimiliar with (from reading Shonen Jump for the first time a few weeks before) was One Piece. So I just grabbed Vol. 2 (they only one in the series they had), and felt some regret after I bought it.
As I finished reading it on the way home, I just wanted to know more, such as who this Zoro guy was.
-
I had been pretty stressed from the day's work and had decided to randomly "google" things to take my mind of it. Coincidentally I came across One Piece images during my trawling. I was instantly confused yet mesmerized by this strange art style. Therefore, upon further research I found out it was a Japanese manga and anime. I instantly started watching the episodes via (regrettably) online episodes and (despite all my work) I had managed to catch up in three months. Then I moved on to the manga which took me five months lol
I believe what inspired me to manage to finish so quickly (considering my busy lifestyle) was Luffy. I just love his character and am obsessed in knowing his latest hilariously stupid antics.
-
I first watched One Piece 5 years ago when it premiered here in the Philippines (broadcast, not cable). I didn't like it at all. At the beginning, the story seems to be very boring. I hated adventure types in the first place. Also, the designs are not that good. So I quit watching it. I only watched for a month (about 20 episodes).
And last April, a friend of mine "forced" me to watch the whole series. I'm an otaku myself. I've already watched 100+ anime series (Naruto, Bleach, Death Note, Gundams, Code Geass, etc.) in just 2 years. My friend was puzzled on why One Piece is not included in that 100+. He's an otaku as well and he promised me that if I got bored watching it, he'll give me all anime DVDs he currently had. So I watched it because I want his collection. However, after I finished the Arlong Arc, I can't stop watching the next episodes.
One Piece is the only anime which deals with friendship (nakama-ship actually) in a different perspective. I liked what Luffy did just to convince Nami to join his crew. I liked what all of them had done so far.
-
I first seen One Piece when it was on 4kids, disgusted on how it sounded I ignored it and changed the channel. About a week later I was browsing for Trigun episodes and came across the Japanese version of One Piece when Luffy was going Gear 2nd, I had no idea what I was watching but I liked it D: And that's pretty much it.
-
I got into it via the 4kids dub in 2005. It was different from what I've seen before, I wasn't consistently watching it, just catching an episode every so often. (It was back in it's Saturday morning days, when I was usually asleep.) I knew at that time there was anime and manga and that One Piece was one of them, and of course there was an original.
I googled One Piece and one of the first sites (at the time) which came up was the original ArlongPark.com fansite. I went there a few times (I was always confused by the image in the latest episode section of a guy laying down on the floor; this I now know is Iceburg after getting his ass shot) and one time I went there and saw "Forums" so I decided to click it.
Found myself here, after several months on the forum of defending the 4kids dub (being the dumb 14-year-old I was) the intense hatred of the 4kids dub by the members got me to watch the original… I never turned back. Since that faithful day One Piece has became my favorite series of all time and has inspired me more than Dragonball Z (which at the time, I deemed an impossible task).
I am grateful to all the members of Arlong Park who pushed me into seeing the original, you guys also flamed me over and over about my awful spelling/grammar/punctuation and got me to actually sit down and type up a decent reply before hitting "reply", which ultimately resulted in my 100x better typing skills. Thanks.
-
well, i first got into it by 4kids:blink: later found out that their versoin sucked, stopped watching for a few years. i got back into it when Funi's episode premired and i haven't looked back since =3
-
I read a chapter of it on Shonen Jump from a cousin of mine, he later told me the series sucked..then few monthes later a friend made me watch the 4Kids version of it and by some dumb luck i happened to like it, i started watchin it every saturday until 4Kids just suddenly stopped airing it…the weeks went by and i finally decided to watch it online...i saw the horrors that 4Kids had done and i temporilary turned green...
I eventually found K-F Subs and got the 250ish episodes and movies that were avalible at the time...and i've been hooked ever since
-
i read a chapter out of a jump magazine i found at Randall's, it was the chapter where klahadore made fun of usopp's dad, and didn't think much of it at the time, then i saw the 4kids dub, and thought it was ok, so i searched it on youtube, and i found an anime episode subbed, started watching that, got waaaaaayyyyyy into it (i started at the arabasta arc, for reasons i can't remeber ) and the obsession began.
-
Nami crying @ AP and Sanji vs Kurobi
-
People always compared/contrasted OP to Naruto on the Narutoforums when I frequented it over a year ago (before those forums went to complete hell). I decided, like many other anime, I'd check it out after also hearing my friend that isn't even in to anime watched fansubbed episodes with his brother who also wasn't even all that into anime. Best.decision.ever.
Like some of you, I never had to watch the 4kids dub.
-
I began liking 'One Piece' when I read Vol.1 of the Viz manga, and then moved to the Japanese Anime… And i was hooked - I like it more than the Dragon Ball series now! :D
-
It started back in 1998 it was January or February and I was looking online for a new Japanese series to read, and "One Piece" had a neat looking cover. There was a guy with green hair drinking, a girl with orange hair, and some guy with sandals jumping. I figured "Why not give it a try". I ordered the only volume that was out from Sasuga Books. When I finally got it in the mail I was pretty excited to read it. In the first few pages a little kid stabbed himself in the face! Right in the FACE! The little kid was awesome! All the adults around picked on him and joked with him. It was great! From that moment I was in love. "One Piece" continues to be a regular read (and watch) for me.
-
I was channel flipping when I saw the 4kids version on Toonami. I stayed on the channel because I thought Nami was hot.
Then I looked it up on the web after a few months of watching, saw that 4kids' version sucked, and soon enough One Piece became my favorite anime/manga of all time.
-
I read an article about OP in a manga/anime magazine and I liked the general idea (pirates and DF and everything) plus it was kinda recommended, so I gave it a try and that's how it started, sth like 4 years ago :)
-
Before i was a Narutard
(No fucking lie, and know i regret it >.<) . And then i saw the infamous luffy vs lucci fight and then i got hooked. -
I can't really remember when I went from thinking that One Piece was a dull run of the mill manga to a notch above (and kept rising), but it was pretty damned far into the story.
I think I'll have to re-read the manga soonish grins
-
A year or so ago, I saw an episode on Cartoon Network, when they still had the Toonami block. It was when everyone first arrived on Arlong Park seeking Nami. I thought it was interesting, but a bit stupid, due to the insane voices and whatnot. Then, on a Dragonball podcast I listen to, I heard that one of the members loved One Piece and compared it to Dragonball a few times. So I started to not skip over it in my American Shonen Jump, and then I finally bought the first volume. Today, my family and friends think I am crazy for liking it and I make references to One Piece in day-to-day conversation no matter what the context. :D
-
My first encounter with One Piece was sort of negative. I had the TV on as background noise and the Luffy vs. Mohji episode came on. I wasn't really watching, but when Boodle started screaming about the Beast Breaker I turned it off.
I think a few days later I had CN on as white noise again, and it was the Shanks-Buggy flashback. I liked Shanks, so I started watching the show whenever I could catch it even though he usually wasn't on it. Then I bought the first couple volumes of the manga, started watching fansubs, and turned away from 4Kids forever. :D
-
Um, well, I have to thank 4kids for this one, no matter how much I hate them. xD; I started liking OP by watching it in the morning on Saturdays and stuff. Funny thing was, that OP was the only show that made my heart race but I never paid any attention to it the rest of the week. Then one day I was watching it on Toonami, and for no paritcular reason, decieded to search One Piece on the internet.
I don't really remember what had happened after that, but I know I started to watch the ending of the Arabasta arc. And then the entire Skypia, DBF, Water 7 and Enies Lobby and so on.
After that I became obsessed with OP so much so that some of my friends get annoyed with me. xD; But yeah, that's
stupidmy story. C: -
i started liking one piece when i was reading my shonen jump subscriptio (reading naruto) and then i got bored cuz i wanted to read something but i finished naruto so i was flipping through the magazine and then i saw a pretty funny scene and started to read one piece. after i started to get interested then i looked online and started to watch the anime. ahhhhh… good ol' times
-
I bought the first issue of American SJ when it came out, completely by chance. I actually got it for the Yugioh manga (hey, I was 13!) but needless to say One Piece totally drew me in. I stopped reading as soon as they started calling Zoro 'Zolo', and too afraid of the TV dub of the anime, having heard bad things about it from a friend and unwilling to wake up early enough to see it, I didn't read or watch One Piece again for a very long time.
When I was about 15, I got bored one day and downloaded every song on an anime music website with "Hikari" in the name just for kicks, and got hooked on Hikari E. I looked it up to see what it was from, and lo and behold, it was from One Piece, which I had almost forgotten. I figured what the hey, it would be nice to see some more of that, so I googled fansubs and found K-F and watched from episode 1 to the end of Arabasta in about two weeks. I kept watching the anime as it was released until the end of Enies Lobby, and since then I've read the manga.
Around the middle of the Arlong arc One Piece quickly began to cement itself as my favorite series, and it hasn't budged from that spot since. <3
-
well, I was wathing anime for a while like Dragon ball and Rurouni Kenshin and Samurai Champloo and that was all I knew so I started to look around for anime a bit more and that is when I realized I liked the Shounengenre the most and after some research it seemed that there was a shounen I never heard of that had tons of episodes and was really good according to some so I started watching and I liked it from the first episodes, namely because I love pirates. . .
now I am a real anime/manga freak and I read and watch really too much :D most of the time I can't keep up with at which ep I am in what series :D or what chapterPS: I am also Buying the manga in Dutch (my native language) because I am a comic book kind of guy and I love to actually own these type of things. . .
-
ok wow.
it all started with anime, i was going to my cousins house when he showed me like epi 3 of naruto, i was liek, wdfs with that drawing… then i got addicted to naruto for like, 2 years. and became a HUGE anime fan, i didnt read manga though
when i first saw the commercial for a new anime on tv, i was SO hyp! saw the first 5 seconds of the shitty 4 kids opening for one piece, decided it was the worest show ever =____= (i've changed my ways now! T0T)
a year later, still addicted to naruto, started watching subbed online, wanted more! >:O went to read manga, found itachi died.
bored one day, decided to read one piece so i could make fun of it later, after reading the first chapter i was like: holy.SHIT. O_Oi decided on 2 more chapters...
by the time i went bed that night, i had finished the skypiea arc xP
*thank god it was a long weekend
now i go back ever so often to read the awesome parts, in otehr words, rereading the whole manga =___= watch episodes ever so often, search up fanfics...fanart...
