One of the Bleach games(forgot which one) label the giant manta ray as Unohana's shikai. This is sort of similar to how Kaien's zanpakuto was shown in a game before it ever appeared in the manga so I think it's safe to assume it's her zanpakuto's shikai.
Bleach Discussion Part 2

-
My main fix against bleach is the world is too small. Its not expanded enough and I pray to god the flashbacks last longer , I don't want to bare a stretched out fight.
-
oh come on
Ichigo vs Ulquiorra is definitely gonna be the highlight of the series
especially with Orihime standing there again
! I'm being sarcastic

Seriously, If I prefer a flashback instead of the main storyline in a manga its sad …. . This manga fails to create a captivating world that reader can enrich themselves in. And, the characters are cliche as hell. Serously I hate flashbacks, but Bleach is the first manga I have ever read that I have ever wanted a flashback instead of the main story. Its sad really........ I want this series to be good and at least show more story which the flashback is doing for me and I'm great full but this series really needs a original plot and less cliche characters. I fail to articulate why this manga is so popular when it does not bring anything new to the table in terms of shounen its like the type of manga you can find anywhere its not original its not unique. I really wish Zombie Powder was not canceled as it had an original plot or at least a more original plot than his
current Bleach. Kubo is good managaka but he needs to create more interesting manga plots and be more unpredictable, And keep his readers guessing. -
The only way Kubo can redeem himself in the present time once the flashbacks end is if he finally gives some love to characters who he has yet to develop or use to the full of his capability. Yeah, we all know Ichigo/Ulquiorra is coming as is Aizen owning a good chunk of Soul Society just so he can get extremely close to winning before Ichigo gets back out, but with so many characters who seem like they're just there and a new round of fights starting (the three Espada in SS, Yammi and Wonderweiss still in HM and potential fights for anyone who isn't Ichigo), this is probably the last time they will have a chance at anything before the final battle when its "Ichigo and Friends vs. the World".

Agreed. I would prefer a little more development in other characters than a fight you know is going to drag out .

I like the flashbacks and I like the break from Ichigo. These Flashbacks highlight important events within Soul Society. With Aizen starting to invade Karakura Town, it's important to know the past behind it. I think Kubo did a good job implementing the Gaiden at this time. Especially since this sets up for the Viazards teaming up with Soul Society.
I am betting as soon as this flashback is finished (which it is) we will see the battles between Aizen and Soul Society. Cause Remember, Ichigo has to get to where Orihime and Ulqirrara is but as we speak Soul Society has a battle in front of them now.

The only reason these flashbacks have been decent is because the Vaizard were the main focus. If this most recent chapter is the last one of the flashbacks, then this whole thing just fell flat on its face.
Also, whatever Soul Society did to the Vaizards soon after their transformations likely lead to their exile so I doubt they'll "team up" on Soul Society's terms.
-
Last time I checked defensive is also part of a combat so my point still stands.
Yes, but you were stating that the full purpose of Bankai is a Melee boost. It's not always the case. For example, Yumichika's release has no actual offensive power; rather, it causes the opponent's weapon to get heavier and heavier until they are unable to lift it. I'd like to think that there's some people in soul Society, Urahara included, that don't have a final release (Bankai) as something that's pure, undulated raw offensive.
Sorry but I don't really get what you're trying to say. I fail to see why a Bankai would be needed to change transformed hollows back to Death Gods. With all that we've seen in Bleach Bankai have always been considered helpful in taking strong opponents down. It simply doesn't make sense to go "we need to change them back! Kisuke, learn Bankai to do so!" If they'd go "damn, we're losing to many Captains to quick! Kisuke, learn Bankai in order to surive!" then it would make sense with what Bleach represents.
Why I believe this will become true is because of the hints that Urahara has given. Urahara specifically stated that his Bankai is not for training people. Offensive tactics usually work for almost any type of training, so this would indicate that his Bankai is either a defensive tactic, or something unorthodox. I'm guessing the later, because if it was a defensive tactic, most of the time it can still be used to train someone. Scenarios like "Pierce this invincible shield to grow stronger!" and whatnot come to mind. So, with that said, his Bankai is likely something we haven't experienced in the Bleach world. He revolutionized the Soul Society with his inventions; why should his Bankai be any different?
Second, like I said in my last post, I refuse to believe his Bankai was accelerated sheerly because he could do it. There had to an emergency situation going on… and what better emergency situation than the one that's happening right now? Besides, we KNOW he's involved in changing them back in some way... why else would they, he, Tessai, and Yoruichi leave Soul Society at the exact same time?
Wow, you say that as if it was some sort of fact. If you assume that Aizen was there from the beginning that it could aswell have been him who stabbed everyone. At the same time it could have been Tosen who stabbed everyone. Don't say it as if it is set in stone that the minors where stabbed by Tosen, while the big players were stabbed by Kensei. It's a fair assumption but it's not a proven fact so far.
I know it's not proven, but yes, it's a fair assumption. Fact is, though, that the only use of gases and poisons we've seen so far is by Mayuri and Nemu, for obvious reasons. Aizen uses Kidou, his Shikai, and the Hogyokyu. For him to use some kind of chemical or pseudo-science method to do his experiments would be out of character for him.
Consider this: We have a person who cheated to get his Bankai and a Kidou master on their way to rendezvous with the future Vaizard. If Aizen is a Kidou master as well, that means Tessai's interference would be useless. But… we have a person with a Bankai that's "Not for training" coming to help. I see no other scenario except his Bankai in some way fixing this situation, and Aizen's, which also remains unseen, having started it.
Wait a second. Isn't a release a Shikai?
Yes, I should rewrite that. What I meant was, we don't know if that's simply the unsheathed state of the sword or if it's her Shikai, because we've never seen her give a release command. However, as Kidany pointed out, the games have it as her Shikai. While not canon, it's good enough for me. At least until we actually see her fight.
-

First, it's not Yumichikas Soul Slayer that does so, it's Kiras. Yumichikas Soul Slayer does something like stealing the entire spirit force of the opponent or something. And my point still stands, those are combat abilities. Yes, they are defensive but still they make you defeat your opponent that way. That's the element of a combat. I don't see what's so difficult to get about that.
Why I believe this will become true is because of the hints that Urahara has given. Urahara specifically stated that his Bankai is not for training people. That his Bankai is not for training also mean that it has a vastly to destructive power to confront someone with it who is not an opponent that needs to be killed. Lets not forget that this is a Shonen Manga so this is the likelier guess. Furthermore, I still place my bets on the Hogyoku having something to do with the change the hollows back thing.
Second, like I said in my last post, I refuse to believe his Bankai was accelerated sheerly because he could do it. Whoa again, don't state it as a fact. It was already said long ago, that it was because he invented the Hogyoku (aswell as it having something to do with those Faux bodies). Having these things be tied to Shinji and the like is also a fair assumption but nothing we KNOW per facts. Chose your words a little more careful please.

Ok, now who's the person who cheated to get his Bankai? I don't have any idea who you are talking about.

Well, if you consider that glitches can happen when you write a manga it is more likely that Kubo simply forgot about the release command. The pure definition of a Shikai is that a Soul Slayer releases his form.
-
Furthermore, I still place my bets on the Hogyoku having something to do with the change the hollows back thing.

That actually makes alot of sense, so simple yet could tie most of these things together. I could see Urahara attempting to find a way to reverse the transformation the Vaizards went through. That in conjuction with the gigai he invented that sucks away spirit energy and turns a shinigami into a regular soul led to his exile from Soul Society.
Ok, now who's the person who cheated to get his Bankai? I don't have any idea who you are talking about.
He means that Urahara used the same method of obtaining Bankai that Ichigo used with that doll thing that forcibly brings out the zanpakuto's spirit form into the physical world. Personally though I wouldn't call it cheating.
-
I wouldn't call using the doll cheating either. It's not some method where you automatically get your bankai, you have to work for it.
-
@Fire Fist:
No, that's her release. That's neither her Shikai nor her Bankai. And it's a Manta Ray… more or less.
That's her shikai, dumbfucker. "Release" can apply to shikai, but it generally refers to an Arrancar's zanpakuto, since it only has one stage. But when you "release" your zanpakuto, you reveal the actual sword's true form. Bankai simply takes it one step above that.
This topic is now about FIRE FIST ACE being an idiot.

Can't really remember how exactly that event went. Could you please fill me on or please let me know in which chapter it happened?
Furthermore if I understand that correct, this is something Ichigo went through not Urahara, right?
-
Here's the pages that mention the doll and how it's used.
!
!And Urahara was both the creator and first person to succeed in using the method I mentioned in the post of mine you quoted. Ichigo was the second.

You don't know what lead to the Vaizards exile or how it went down. How do you know the Vaizards don't want revenge on Aizen? Your already judging something that we don't even know the outcome of.
-
It doesn't matter if I don't know how it went down 100%, the fact of the matter is: the ones behind this are fellow shinigami. All of these guys ended up being exiled from Soul Society which means that the powers that be(Yamamoto/Central 46/whoever) likely didn't believe them, hence the punishment or persecution that resulted in them leaving. Besides, it doesn't change the fact that the end result of this flashback was a waste of storytelling.
Also, I didn't say the Vaizards wouldn't want revenge on Aizen. I said that they likely wouldn't abide by Soul Society's terms regarding this situation. They will like inadvertently help each other out since by the looks of this flashback they have the same enemy. Now please, read my posts better next time.

Again, your right back to saying something is a waste without a reason. When you don't even know the final conclusion of these flashbacks.

You said they wouldn't "team up" and last I checked fighting together is a team. It doesn't matter if they don't "abide" by Soul Society's terms. If they fight against Aizen the same time Soul Society does it's a team.
-
The end result of this flashback is that Aizen is the bad guy…which we've already known for a long time. Of course I call that a waste.
And no that isn't teaming up since if my guess is right both sides would only be doing their own thing, but by the end of it Soul Society and the Vaizards get each of their goals accomplished since it was the same person causing problems.
-

Goku and Piccolo teaming up against Radditz, yeah.
-
You're joking right…are you trying to say that Aizen isn't the bad guy even after this most recent chapter? If that's so then wow…
Also, Goku and Piccolo made a conscious effort to work together so your example holds no water.
-

That was made known in the first arc..Now prove to me it's the main reason of the flashback.
Also, Goku and Piccolo made a conscious effort to work together so your example holds no water.
team (tm) 1. Sports & Games A group on the same side, as in a game.
-
The main conflict during this flashback has been the disappearances of the soul of Rokoungai. Now who is behind said conflict, Aizen.
Again, if both sides are doing their own thing it's not teaming up. It just so happens they have the same goal. It's like how in Naruto Orochimaru encouraged the Leaf Village's attempt to take out Akatsuki members since it means less trouble for him. Now does that mean the village and Orochimaru are using teamwork? God no.
If both the Vaizards and Soul Society actually go out of their way to help each other then it can be considered teamwork. How are you not getting this?
-
Thanks for providing the pages in question Kidany. Yeah, wouldn't call that cheating either. It's simply a training method that the majority doesn't use.
-
Again, your right back to saying something is a waste without a reason. When you don't even know the final conclusion of these flashbacks.
Oh the irony….
@Kidany:
How are you not getting this?
He likely gets it… He is just being Miracles.
-
XD That irony thing is funny.
Word Gorlom, word.
-
Why did I quit my mod job. WHYMiracles, please quit stirring things up. :-/
That having been said, I'm still hoping for a reason as to how they're becoming hollowized. I love the theories everyone is getting, but I still want a definite reason; the suspense is killing me! :-p
-
New spoilers…very meh IMHO:
-Aizen's controlled Shinji all this time: he was hypnotized from the beginning with Kyoka Suigetsu and Shinji let him be his VC to "watch over him". Furthermore, the last month Shinji's VC has been some bald guy he believed was Aizen.
-Urahara and Tessai finally arrive to face Aizen at the end.
-There will be a third Bleach movie. -
Haha, I knew the Aizen everyone was seeing was an illusion. But an entire month? God, Aizen's Shikai is so broken. His bankai (assuming it's not what changed the Vaizards, which I think it is) is probably beyond broken.
Let's face it folks: once Aizen's defeated, this series is done. Kubo probably wants to go back to Zombie Powder.
-

All that remains regarding Aizen is "why". Why is he so obsessed with this uber power? What made him turn into this megalomaniac who uses everyone to be the most powerful (non-Ichigo) thing in this series? If he's behind everything then, now and in the future, then it would have been better if Aizen at least reveals a bit of his real motivation (not everything) instead of just saying "I want to surpass my limits".
-
It's because he wants to fight whatever's on the other end of the big fuckin' arm with a knife in hell.
Pretty please?

I don't know if we really need a reason for that. It's human nature (or in this case Death God nature) that people grow in many different aspects. And once you've reached a limit there's a bitter taste to it, since it's as if you've reached a dead point in your development, which often leads to the unsatisfactory question "is this ALL what I am?" And somebody who is not satisfied with the status quo seeks new hights for himself in order to avoid being in this situation. I guess for Aizen this is the way to get there.
-

I understand that Aizen wants to get even more powerful…but why? There are many Shinigami who reach their limit and they're satisfied with where they stand. There are probably tons of underachieving Shinigami too who rather not do anything more than they have to and rather stay in the background. (like Ikkaku) Why is Aizen the only one who wants to question and go beyond his limits?
-
And why do it this twisted way? why not become the top in the organization, acknowledged as the strongest?
Has he even tried to go face to face with the old man?

I'd say it's because of his ego. All the different motivations of villains are powered their ego.

I guess I'm just looking too deeply on someone who's actually a one-dimensional manipulator. (maybe two-dimensional) The sad thing is since the latest revelations, I've wanted the flashbacks to end and go back to current time so we can get somewhere in stopping Aizen once and for all.
-
Understandable, since that flashback wasn't that mindblowing in terms of revelations, as it could be. True we found out what the former relations between the Vizard and Soul Society were. But if instead the revelation would have happened in the present story with the following dialog:
Aizen: Hello Hirako Shinji, former Captain of 5th Squad.
Shinji: Hello, my former Vice-Captain.Information-wise the revelation is the same. The chapters that focused on that part didn't contain more interesting information of that sort. It was just mindless small-talk between two dimensional characters. And that Urahara became Captain isn't that interesting either since we knew that this happened at some point. I mean every of the captains once got promoted to it, but showing how it happen isn't that interesting if not something important happens. And it did not in said chapter.
More interesting it was to show that he formed 12th Squad what it is today and how he aquired the help of Mayuri. But even that could have been done in less panels.
And then the big three antagonists were all together back then already. No signs of why Tosen who apparently only sees the way of the least bloodshed follows Aizen.
And last but not least the hollowfication of Death Gods. This I hope will at least contain a bit of intformation but even if it does, the flashback really could have covered all what it did in half the amount of chapters it took. What is important was held short and what stretched it was totally unimportant and whats more, it was not entertaining in the least.
-
Someone on another board said that all Kubo's flashbacks have been is "see, this is what such-and-such" was doing 100 years ago. I sort of was originally hoping that the flashback arc was going to be more indepth character analysis, including the Vizard and maybe Urahara and such, perhaps giving more depth. But most of the depth is filling in little blanks in the timeline and, as you've said, small talk and relationships back then.
-
@Tokoro:
Someone on another board said that all Kubo's flashbacks have been is "see, this is what such-and-such" was doing 100 years ago.
Kubo himself said that before the flashbacks even started in chapter 108.
Anyways does anyone else find Aizen's hypnosis boring? I do.
-

Kubo only said "this will be a glimpse at crucial points in history", which mostly seems to be concentrating on Urahara establishing the science division and Aizen making his move on the future Vaizard. He didn't say "here's where such and such was back then", which a lot of characters who really didn't need to be shown (Byakuya, Soi Fon, Shuuhei, Nanao) merely were.
-
@Fire Fist:
I said I misstated that. I rephrased it to say that it's her shikai, probably, but we don't know the release command. Quit being a Troll.

Actually, you were just totally wrong and tried to think of some stupid excuse to save face. Which, in itself, was pathetic. "We've never seen her shikai." has absolutely nothing to do with "We don't know her release command." Hell, nobody was even talking about release commands.
-
The only thing this flashback really revealed that we couldn't already guess was the relationship between Hiyori and Urahara, and Shinji and Aizen. Ivotas is absolutely right, they could've just done that by two off-comments from the respective parties. It also explained a few other things, like why Nanao and Lisa look alike, why Shuhei has the 69, and how Mayuri came to inherit 12th Squad, but again those are things that could have been summed up in a panel flashback.
Did it accomplish something? Yeah, a little bit. But not enough.
-
Somehow I had this thought that maybe instead of the small glimpses we got, Kubo could have done a full one-shot maybe showing Mayuri's rise from incarceration in the Maggot's Nest to 12th Squad captain from his POV. Sure it probably wouldn't have been the same but if Hitsugaya can have a full chapter regarding his own discovery of his powers…
-

"The catalyst behind the bitterness among the fellow shinigami."
-
"The catalyst behind the bitterness among the fellow shinigami."
Which was exactly what I said: Urahara starts the science division, then a few years later Aizen creates the Vaizard. He didn't need to have close to ten chapters now with the approximation of 3 chapters of content and 7 of filler.
-
Can someone explain what the point of that Aizen inpersonator was? Couldn't Aizen just have hypnotized his captain to think he was there even though no one was? And why didn't any of the other captains notice it wasn't Aizen?
-

As far as the impersonation thing is concerned, it could be that there's a limit to it's powers. You know simply disguising somebody who still has a free will is not as tough as creating an illusional character who acts all by himself.
As to why other captains (and lets add vice-captains and Death Gods in general to that) didn't notice, I'd say plothole (unless of course hopefully guys like Shunsui were suspicious).
About the chapter itself, I think it was rather better then most of the previous ones. However it also suffers from the same desease as the rest of the series, which would be that it is stretched where there's no need for it. I mean what's the point of explaining the functions of Aizens Soul Slayer exactly the same way it was done the first time we found out about it? Ok, Shinji learns of it for the same time, but the reader doesn't have to experience the same stuff twice.
-

I'm not sure, but I think from the way that his illusions work that the illusion itself is stationary, or at least needs a medium to be applied to (i.e. Another body/person). Wasn't the guy he used for his fake death stunt in Soul Society some random dude's corpse?
