I like Shinji.

Greg, you lucky bastard. You get to see it right away. The rest of us will have to wait for pirated crap from the theatre, and even more of us will have to wait for that crap to be subtitled. XD
(totally willing to suport company, but before that, I wanna see it NOW)
Oh yeah. Never considered that aspect of it. But hey, you guys got 300 and Lord of the Rings way the hell before me so win some lose some I suppose.
Oh…Incidently we're getting the newest Harry Potter flick first. ^_^;
-
ok, i guess that seems fair. ^_^
-
^_^ Rei…
Yes…I'm sad...
And I still need to see the last few episodes…
-
I do sort of like TV series, but didn't care for the film, mainly the second half. I did find some of the the character development interestingly handled, though Shinji came off as too pathetic for my liking, and found myself at a loss to really care what happened to him near the end of the series.
I found a lot of the mecha action very well animated and directed for the most part and may be by favorite aspect of the series and hope this remake lives up to that high bar and this "rebuild" turns out a lot more polished than the series and especially the movie.
-
Can anyone explain to me what exactly happened in the TV series. I watched till the 2nd last episode and never touched it again. What was that episode all about?
-
You know what? I may consider watching the newly done series. Seeing how I've boycotted this series away from myself I've found myself reading basically ever story point from wiki and crap.
If this series is suppose to be the way it was meant to be maybe it wont suck like I've heard it sucked in the original series. I just wonder how emo Shinji is gonna be.
But yeah, if it's just gonna be Mecha Fight! > Mecha Fight! > fanservice > Mecha Fight! > emo moment.. > emo momment.. > Mecha Fight! > Mecha Fight! > Emo Mecha Fight!! then yeah, I don't think I'll bother.
-
If this series is suppose to be the way it was meant to be maybe it wont suck like I've heard it sucked in the original series.
My head is unable to compute what you mean by "it" in this sentence. But my educated guess is that you meant "story", instead of "series". The trailers makes it look like the story is untouched. Perhaps it will be like a director's cut. Tone, art and direction were the best things about the original so I'm hoping that at least those things will remain the same.
-
@Advent`:
Trailer.
The new trailer looks awesome.
I like the song that is playing in the trailer.
Anyway, thanks for the info! -
I love Eva! I've been waiting for more news about this movie. It looks pretty good.
I think there's more info (and some great reviews) on Eva Monkey.
http://www.evamonkey.com/2006/09/evangelion-shin-gekijou-ban.php
I'm a member of their forums! ^^VI'm thinking of buying the thinpak boxset at the next con I go to, if I can get the money.
-
Evangelion was the first anime where I could really feel a human mind completely collapsing and I liked that.
EoE raped my brain better than a Wanderstiefel full of LSD!
Don't make Evangelion sane, it would make me sick!
-
Dang, I might not be an Eva fan but I might watch this when it comes out. Looks positively gorgeous.
-
Hawtness, tho the neon green midriff on the Eva will take some getting used to.
Love the new details on the Angels!
-
Anyone know where I can find that song in the trailer.
and while I never cared for the series, I'm willing to give this movie a try.
-
-
i just finished the anime tv series…wtf is with the last 2 eps???:wassat:
they changed from mecha>psychology of the human mindps. the characters really love staring at space for minutes XD
-
Goin' to see it tomorrow. So psyched. Eva on the big screen, never thought I'd experience that.

Awesome Greg. Give us some impressions after you've seen.
-
I hope at the peak of the climax Gurren Lagann runs Shinji's Jesus-mom-bot through and settles things the way a man does.
-
A gift from /m/
! > Came back from watching Rebuild. Will probably watch it again tomorrow
The mechanic key animation is a whole pretty much the same on the first two battles even if it does looks more organic in the subtle movement. The third angle is completely different, however. The scene composition during that battle was much more dynamic than the usual in Evangelion, more in line with even Diebuster or Gurren-Lagann.
The characterizations are pretty much in line with the show but perhaps with a more "marked" take on their interaction. Misato feels more motherly towards Shinji, Shinji feels more like just an average shy adolescent rather than the completely twisted lead in the series and they even lower the dramatist in his father-complex and Ayanami feels more casually quiet. They increased Gendo's sinister aura, nevertheless.
As for Kaworu, he only appears at the end talking to Seele's generic leader. He is told to keep an eye on NERV and just says "Fine, seems like fun. After all, I wonder what the third child is like".
There's a mini preview in the end, it shows Asuka and a new brown haired girl.
Oh God, I want to see it so badly now!

The guy who wrote that review sounds like a jackass.
Holy shit did this film rule.
I don't even think 'rule' can suffice to describe how amazingly good it is. If you're not a fan of Eva, it's not gonna do anything to make you instantly a fan but holy shit are the battles, which were already fantastic in the original, legendary. Remember how Lucas remastered The Trilogy and added new shitty details here and there that while nice, didn't really do anything to elevate the overall experience?
Yeah, this kicks the ever-loving out of that concept.
The first confrontation is amazing. There are several brutal Eva-rampage scenes I'm sure all fans love, and most of the top 1 or 2 tend to be Asuka's rampage against the Eva series or the original berserker rampage.
They have managed to elevate the berserker rampage to a level of chaos I never thought imagineable.
If we say 01 raped Sachiel in the series, here he defiled him in ways best left undescribed. The sound is remarkable. Eva's roar is redone and sounds even more psychotic and hell-bent on ravaging the angel. The new look with the neon is sick and Eva's recovery from the wrist damage is FANTASTIC! Which brings up one of the many great consistency changes they brought up, it shows the real form VERY clearly every time the Eva is severely damaged. Instead of magically 'beam healing' the arm pustulates and reforms just like when seen during the fight with Toilet Paper Angel (forget its name). Sachiel's explosion is also wicked into a giant bubbling mound of awful. the entire scene is nothing short of breathtaking.
The second Angel battle is equally updated. This time when Eva grabs the burning whips, we clearly see the human-like hands as the armor is burned off. Not to mention the angel has been beautifully rendered in 3D, Shinji's counter-attack is killer here.
Oh, the Nerv computers and shit, holy crap, they're beautiful. Almost everything has been done in 3D and not some slip-shod job like Japanese films tend to do, they look grand. Remember the huge red flashing emergency signs that light up when the umbilical cord is cut? They're all just slightly computer rendered and it gives them a great look. All the buzzing and beeping sensors all look FANTASTIC.
Shinji's training has also been updated to seem 'computer gamish'. I thought this was silly and the only negative update as since we're accepting they have the technology to make a moving city and giant human/diety human-controlled death cyborgs, they should be able to have realistic computer graphics as was done in the series. But to counter that the training chamber itself is incredibly cool, I don't believe there was anything like in in the series.
Tokyo 3 is fantastic. It's rising scene is like watching the lush backgrounds of Akira move around in 3D. The impossible system of locks and mechanisms involved, (things which are completely unrealistic but I love to see), look incredible and it's cool to see them working with the ideas of moving train cars, etc.
If you weren't a fan of Eva's cerebral side, there's nothing here to bring you on board. The famous scenes where Shinji questions his own/others' actions are all in tact. Some are slightly updated but nothing amazing. From what I can recall there's him recovering from the berserker attack, his running away section, the confrontation in Rei's apartment and his contemplating whether or not to pilot after getting the shit beat out of him by Diamond (forget the name). There are other little bits but those are the main ones with prolonged silence. I can't say they don't stand out….because they do. However....in the pace of the film...they feel almost just right. The film covers a fantastic amount of material in a grand way which took the series much longer and the little contemplative breaks don't feel as unnecessary when the story is moving along at a great pace and the battles are such an AMAZING pay-off.
Before getting the the last battle, as for "Fuck me, I can't believe they did that" moments there was Shinji being brought down to Central Dogma to see Lilith (WOOOOOOOOOOAH) BEFORE Operation Yashima. And then of course the end of the film, fucking Kaoru living and talking with Seele on the Moon. GAH
But yes, Diamond....Diamond was one of my favorite angels because it was just kind of this thing that was there and....while that's true for this version, in addition to that it's also a shape-shifting death machine!!!!! Fuck me! The thing pulls instant geometric transformations into anything from shields to beam cannons, it's KUUUUUH-RAZY! And it's blasts are animated with extreme care. Which brings me to Operation Yashima.
I was wondering how they could make this into the finale. I dunno, it was neat as the turning point in Rei and Shinji's relationship, but I never thought it was all that climatic a battle compared to some of the other more time-oriented battles. They were essentially fighting a giant surgeon's drill. I'll be damned if this battle wasn't Japanese animation perfection. Tension, drama, action and cool factor all play heavily and well in the final showdown. Rei's guarding of Shinji just.....you have to see it. And the blasts that Diamond sends out.....Don't you ever get pissed when you watch anime that smokes blocks the damage from all blasts? Well I think this is the first time I ever saw a realistically drawn beam actually shown burning through/down a fucking mountain. It's sick. The rifle and shield both look incredibly good (updated for the film) and 01 looks fucking badass holding the thing like a beam cannon. Just an amazing tense battle that I never believed they could pull off as something as big as a film finale. But they did and it's so worth it.
Every angel battle in the film is on the same level as Asuka VS the Eva series. They're that ferocious. It also helps that the music is updated as well. The 'Angel's Theme' (dunno real name) actually has Latin-ish lyrics now during the fight with Squidy (again with the name) and it just comes out beautiful.
The only bad thing I have to say about it is the update making the simulation game-like, that's about it. Other than that I can't think of anything made worse, they somehow managed to take Eva's BEST moments and make them even better. In the past 5 or so years I've been continually let down by mecha/battle Japanese animation for either doing things half-assed, or doing something cool, only to have it last for mere moments. The battles in this film are long and brutal and satisfying. You can't ask more than that.
I can't wait for the next film, it looks like there's an entirely new Eva unit (no not the one from America) and as the other reviewer mentioned, a new female character with brown hair and glasses.
Oh, and uh, they show Rei's nipples like twice.
edit:
Yeah, I just watched some Youtube of the original battle with Ramiel (Diamond) and it does not even come fucking close. No way. The film is amazing. If you didn't care for Eva's angst but thought the battles had promise, you NEED to see this movie.
-
What I didn't like about Eva wasn't that they had people being all depressed and contemplating their existence and shit, but that it was so overdone it wasn't even funny.
Well, actually it was, but not in the way the creators intended, certainly. I think the only characters I really liked in the series were Gendo and Kaji, and maybe Ed, because their pasts and dreams and all that were explained but didn't venture into total freaking overkill. I don't remember Shinji being as annoying in the events that are supposed to be covered in the first movie (it ends with him doing something relatively cool), so I'm looking forward to seeing it. The reviews I've read so far makes it sound like they focus on everything I loved about the series and downplay the stuff I hated.
Shinji wasn't my least favorite character in Eva, by the way. That distinction goes to Asuka without question.
-
Woah, first movie and they already show Kaoru? Guess Anno really knows what he's doing.
Not the biggest Eva fan nor do I hate it but I am suddenly interested in this revamp of the first arc of the series. People do seem to forget that there is some great "monster of the week" battles early on before everything goes nuts later. If the Sachiel and Ramiel battles are that good, I need to check this out when it comes out here. (oh, and I'm an Asuka fan..but an Asuka fan moreso of the earlier part of the series before she goes insane like nearly everyone else in this world)
-
So….when does the RAW leak to the internets? ^__^
Seriously, tho, Greg's enthusiastic review makes my blood pumping! I've been a fan of Eva for a while ( long before "it's not as good as people say waaahh waahh waahhh" backlash) so something new-ish is intriguing. And a new Eva and pilot (have we confirmed if it's Mana from that one videogame? That would be neat) looks to keep me hooked for the next coming years.

DAMN YOU GREG and your making me interested in Eva again
-
God damn I need to see this ASAP.
-
Greg's feedback on the movie is given me a sudden urge to re-watch Eva. I lent my brother the platinum edition boxed set, so I hope I get it back soon.
-
i kno it just came out but does anybody know if theres a fansub group thats going to sub this?

Err….has a RAW even emerged yet?
-
Whoops! Sorry for being absent. The day after I posted that review this thread sunk to the bottom so I didn't think there was much interest in it.
Greg's feedback on the movie is given me a sudden urge to re-watch Eva. I lent my brother the platinum edition boxed set, so I hope I get it back soon.
Actually me too, and when I went back to watch clips on Youtube, it's unwatchable. Last 1/3 aside, Eva was one of the most beautiful (artistically speaking) Japanese animation I'd ever seen and while it still looks great among its peers in its day and age without the assistance of Koreans and computers, after seeing the movie it's borderline unwatchable. insert bad EVA-hate joke
In their first encounter, Ramiel sends out this fuckin' wafer thin beam that hits 01 in the show and I couldn't help but laugh. In the movie Ramiel morphs into this geometric deathray that shoots out a massive burst of energy from its S2 Engine that consumes 01 and instead of pulling him back down instantly, they go through a process of releasing grid locks that hold the ground structure of Tokyo III in place, plumetting 01 below.
It was killer.
Seriously, the fights are incredible. If you enjoyed the original battles you can't help but sit there in awe of these.
-
I don't mind watching a good battle, but if all it is, is the fights, that doesn't interest me. Is there anything else good you can say about it?
-

Here's the thing.
It's Eva.
Nothing's changed in that respect. The story has (to this point) remained mostly the same. There was a HOLY SHIT moment when Shinji was taken directly to Central Dogma by Misato. And you get to see a lot more 'behind the scenes' operations at Nerv (like the creation of Operation Yashima).
However, it does carry the same ideas in the series and if you didn't like scenes of Shinji running away and wandering around listening to his tape player the first time around, this isn't gonna do anything for you.
For me? The meat and potatoes of Eva was the 'hidden' origins of the details in the world. I'm not talking about psychosexual awakening study etc. I'm talking about discussing who Lorenz REALLY is, what LCL is, why AT Fields give humans structure, etc. In other words the same nerdy stuff I go gaga over in OP.
Next to that were the battles.
And a distant third was the 'underlying' story.
If you're expecting Shinji to suddenly drop the 'abandoned hated son' act, nah, ain't gonna happen. It's there no doubt. IN SMALLER CONTROLLED DOSES to be sure but it's there.
As far as saying anything else, I suppose the only thing I can say is that I have very little bad to say about it. Changing the training into something from Tron was unecessary as were Rei's tits that no doubt sent the otaku of Japan into a fury. In fact…I don't think I imagined someone in the theater saying "chikubi!" in a subdued voice when it popped up in the corner of the screen.
That's about it. It's still Eva but the animation is sex, the story is concise and the battles are more brutal.
-
Ha ha, that's ok, I liked eva, so I won't be disapointed. It's like, you enjoyed the battles before, but now they're super cool awsome. I was just wondering if there were any other aspects like that.

YEAAAH, THAT'S what I'm talking about :3
-
Wow, that movie was awesome. I couldn't hear a bloody thing, but it looked great. To think within the first two minutes I was all, "hah, so this is what Gainax puts into their movies? Both Gurren-Lagann and Diebuster looked better than…oh". Haha!
Biggest surprise was the character designs were in-line with the original; from the previews, I thought they were "spruced" up. I'm glad they weren't. Movie looked less Madhouse-like than in the trailers, thankfully; quite a ride, thus far best anime movie of the year for me. At least until Phantom Blood finally gets the works.
-
If this gets dubbed they better not make Shinji sound like a whiny emo.
-

The cast or the Angels and Eva's? Because the Eva's and Angels have both been tweaked, most noticeably 01 and that diamond thing.

Shinji is a whiny emo. Shinji is every nerd with every complex in all of Japan wrapped into one pitiful pustule of wangst. Hence its popularity with that crowd. He's like their hero.
But if you can ignore that (which is near impossible in the series because of its length) and enjoy the badass designs, fights and little hidden details of the series, it's a helluva lot of fun. And this film basically took all the awesome parts for ALL fans, nerd or otherwise meaning yes that shit is in there too, and wrapped them into one awesome package.
Malintex, how did you see it? I'm dying to see it again.
-
There's a torrent of what appears to be a subbed camvideo of the film up at http://www.tokyotosho.com , it's the first result if you search for evangelion, but I can't vouch for it as I haven't finished downloading it yet.
-
Ah thank you.
Yeah, cam footage won't cut it for me. This baby needs to be seen in full HD glory. I wish they'd get off their goddamn laurels and release it.
-
Is there a release date for the japanese DVD/Blu-Ray disc?
-
NO >_< They must be anal-retentive because they love holding DVD releases back like it's a turd.
-
LOL, that sucks, well they gotta release it eventually.
-
The cast or the Angels and Eva's? Because the Eva's and Angels have both been tweaked, most noticeably 01 and that diamond thing.
Oh, I noticed some differences, but from the trailer I was expecting Eva in, say, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex kind of style. I wasn't expecting too much uniformity between the series and the movies because of what happened with Diebuster following an FLCL-like style when the original Gunbuster was much less "jazzed" so to say.
And the "camera quality" torrent was what I watched. It resembles the TV series HD rips, so that should say a lot about how high quality the movie is.
-
A friend told me the DVD will be released on the 21st of May.
To be honest, I'm pretty psyched. I didn't adore but I certainly enjoyed the hell out of the original series, and considering I've only seen it once (and forgotten a whole shitload) this movie should be a fresh experience in multiple ways.
And hey, even if everything else turns out to suck I'm pretty sure I'll at least get to enjoy the film on a technical level.
-
The cam-quality video doesn't look so bad, it's a little pixelated and the audio is kinda tinny and thin, also the blue subtitles are weird, but fuck it, i'm not waiting until may.
-
decent quality + sub =
