Well I can agree to the tiny print being annoying… but still I never felt the big wihite boxes detracted too much from the presentation. Overall I liked reading the Yugioh graphic novels and only learned about these "flaws" it had through Janime.

Yeah but my point was that the big white boxes never really affected me, and well I'd have had to read the Japanese raws or the scans or something to know that they edited Jounouchi flipping the bird at someone or editing out crosses.

I didn't even say anything about the art edits. I was merely talking about the stuff that just looks lazy. Like half edited lines, non-edited lines, huge white boxes with super small text, and dialogue mistakes (calling characters by the incorrect name and whatnot.) I couldn't care less about the art edits now, since I know that's bound to happen anyway.
I'm not saying Viz is 4Kids, or something, I'm just saying that there's definite room for improvement.

I'll have to agree with that. Besides the tankoban look so much better on your shelf than the magazine. Besides you can easily sort the tankoban. The magazine though would be a bigger problem.

Well, VIZ is literally retarded now in days… Their overall manga quality has dropped significantly in terms of translation, language and censorhip. (Not only is the censhorship poorly done and often makes no sense, it's the damn essence of it being there in the first place.)
Anyway, despite what I just said, I subscribe to the magazine.. -_-; I also collect the graphic novels, and really don't see why you can't just get both. I'll read the latest chapters of the manga and crap in the magazine, the graphic novels being my ultimate reading experience.

I'm so pissed with how aggravating it is to read this series.
If I read the Viz releases, I have to wait four months per volume, and also have to deal with the censorship of swears. They didn't used to censor swears like this, and now every time I see "butt" or "darn" I just roll my eyes.
If I read the online scanlations, I have to deal with piss poor quality (coming from the point of the story I am at, because I only have been reading Viz's releases, so I am at volume 16). The unedited language is still there, but the fansubbers aren't as good at making the conversations between characters flow naturally like Viz can, and it feels choppy.
I am very anti-censorship, so it really pisses me off to see Viz roll over to the prudent people. Honestly, I pay money to read the uncut volumes, and the fact that they pull this **** is ridiculous.

Oh, and they need to take Bleach out of the damn magazine. It's coming out so slow now. I was so hooked on the bi-monthly releases, but now I have to wait forever. I tried reading scanlations online, but they were terrible, too. The only good scanlation I have seen all the way through from the beginning was Naruto. And I was still a little disappointed with the Viz translations in the beginning, such as chuunin being called journeymen. Anyone know if they went back and changed those for re-releases in the stores? I may trade mine in for authenticity's sake.

Beet is a special case: the series literally stopped and Viz just released all they could before that point. (the same could be done with HxH if Togashi ends up taking another of his breaks) With Bleach, I think its a combination of the series "popularity" in Viz's eyes as well as being in this new arc they want to hook others watching the anime. (even if we're still stalled towards the end of the SS arc with the Bount coming once that's done)

I agree…I wish they added a "damn" "hell" or "ass" in their One Piece volumes.
I don't mind SOME level of censorship and translation changes. After all over censorship in Western means that there are things they can't say or show. I accept that. And I believe Stephen once said (and I apologise if I'm quoting the wrong person or phrasing this wrong) that different translators may translate something differently. Again, I accept this.
HOWEVER at times Viz go beyond what I find acceptable. I want to and enjoy collecting the series I enjoy in English. I love my collection of One piece graphic novels and hope to get the entire series in English. However at times Viz just act like anything will do, and as a fan and someone who wants to support them, its annoying. I feel like stopping because they're putting me off what I want - a well done (not necessarily perfect) English version of series I like.
I wrote them a letter about this once, but obviously didn't get anything back.

Cursing is pretty trivial, but I feel that it's more realistic if they put them in. I mean, if I just watched somebody get cut in half in front of me, I wouldn't say "darn you to heck, you jerk".
It's not about cursing though. Putting in tougher language in general doesn't equate to adding swears.
Who the fuck ever says 'clobber' anyway? That's a warrant for a beating, me thinks.
And when this manga closes out, and Luffy's arm stretches back to deliver that last punch, I wanna feel the crunch of the dream coming true.

I remember that occuring a lot in the Cromartie High School subs… Not sure about the manga though.
Still I don't mind hearing "darn," "heck," and "crap" over their more inappropriate equvalent, and I really don't mind the "darn you to heck" line, but that's just me.
I mean I'm not saying there shouldn't be cursing at all. I'm just saying that even with the more appropriate words there it still gets the point across.

Dude, what the hell? You're overthinking this. As has been said, it becomes annoying when you replace swearwords with not-so-swearwords like darn and crap. Its stupid, it feels out of place and unnatural. In fact, the realism he was referring to was most likely how natural the dialog started, and not the whole rubber pirate shit you introduced. I mean seriously, what the hell?

I feel it's a major turn off for people try to get into the series, too. I mean, as far as the magazine goes, it's appealing in the least. I normally read everything in the magazine, so I'd imagine most people would read One Piece as well, but the latest chapter, the best chapter we've had in a while, it practically opened with Luffy saying "I'm gonna beat you up!" and Wapol calling him an "insolent pup".
Conversing among the crew sounds good, but at the expense of almost every other character in the series. It's almost like Viz expects people who read the magazine to be 4Kids watchers (And who can blame them, looking at the fanart people send in) . It's absolutely ridiculous, you'd think they'd be able to take Luffy's formulaic dialog and correctly translate it consistently without making it sound like it's coming from the mouth of a 5 year old, but actually, they just fuck it up and turn every characters dialog into bread-and-butter screed.

cussing doesn't make a series seem more realistic at all. I'm sorry that Shounen Jump can't be full of "Kevin Smith" style cussing, but I prefer it that way. I personally don't think that cussing makes reading manga seem more "adult" or "realistic" so to speak.

Um, what are we supposed to do about it? I already said I wrote them a letter and that's pretty much the most I can do. It's not like I work at Viz.
We're hardly Viz's target audience, so why would they try to write the series to appeal to use or may changes that we'd agree with when they could probably make two or three times the sales with the uber kid friendly adoption they do now?
That's not necessarily true. The uncut version isn't that way, so that should give you an idea of who the real target audience is.
They don't need to make changes to appeal to us. It was originally intended to be for us, because that's how it is in Japan. They did, however, make changes to appeal to a younger audience, which they shouldn't have to.
Either way, I wouldn't go as far as to say it's uber kid friendly. I mean, there's a bit of blood and such, as well as a compelling story. Luckily, they kept that in, as far as I know.
Well VIZ used to release their manga completely uncensored with swearing, all original names, and better translation/dialouge. They made just as good sales as they did then with what they're selling now. Aside from some hate mail from some overprotective parents, the manga being completely left intact with would sell just as good if not better then what's being sold now. How they're treating their manga is bullshit, and I'm sick of them feeling a need to use the names used in butchered TV adaptions. From what I've seen, the GX manga looks decent. But they used every single name change from 4K!Ds anime dub, which makes it fairly hard to read. Not to mention them reverting to all of the English card names, but that may be more heavier ground, with more pressure from Konami then anyone else.
