I knew when I heard that line how out of character it was..but I couldn't remember what he said originally.
Hey Buuhan, In your sig did'nt tony-kun mean "That like saying I created aids so I am allowed to use my dick and spread it."?

You know now that i think about it 4kids did the whole Ketchup star thing, sure it was orange but they still did it
I haven't watched the bleach dub in a long time. Explain.
I didn't mean the dub. I mean the actual Ichigo character. Kind of lacking common sence at times, but really focused and insightful at other times. Like Luffy, but with more of a straightforward non extreme personality.
What I mean is that Luffy's Funi role is shifting towards the gray area, while Luffy generally gravitates to extremes at either the left or right wing. He's not seeming as unique anymore. More random lines would be appreciated. Such as the "land of meat" thing that they took out. It was a slash against some of Luffy's personality traits.
The voice is good, but the VA needs to loosen up a bit. IMO
Along with the people who write Luffy's dub script.
I'm not making a big deal over the Luffy line change, but I do consider it a mistake on their part and the first one I consider they really made.
You do understand that I'm talking about a script issue, not a VA issue… right? I mean, it's pretty apparent. The very last word in the text you quoted was even 'script'.
That would be the absolute best case scenario at this point. Sadly, it means the absolute best case scenario is that the script writers haven't watched enough of the show to know what is a normal line and what is a running joke.
It's not about a literal translation. It's about the fact that the joke isn't there at all.
::Long and detailed scientific explanation here::
Luffy: "Oh! So it's a mystery _____!"
The punchline of the joke comes when somebody goes into great detail about what they're talking about it and Luffy immediately disregards what they say and comes to the conclusion that whatever they were talking about is some unknown and mysterious thing.
Also, Luffy doesn't say "Can you help him?" He doesn't say "Can you anything". He doesn't ask questions like that. He makes statements, "Help him!" "You will help him." That's another core part of his character.
I'm not a writer, but I do know that these first 10-12 eps were tossed on top of everyone out of nowhere and had absolute super duper tight deadlines (I had to translate like 5 or 6 of those eps in 3 or 4 days, for example). And since they WERE probably some of the first eps the writers had seen, they might not have understood running gags and such yet. So I'd say give 'em time.
I'll also try to make sure things like that are more clearly documented for the writers too. I've been working on a more detailed character traits document lately, so if anything seems kinda out of character writing-wise, let me know (PM or email is best, too busy to check the boards constantly ) and I'll try to clarify things for the writers more. But most of all I think giving them time is best. Just like how actors need time to get into their roles, writers, directors, and even translators also need time to get accustomed to new surroundings.
Good to hear, Mato. As such..do you think there's a chance that these "lines" will be corrected in the uncut dvd's?
Oh, I don't know. Your guess is as good as mine. I have no idea how the writing/recording/dvd-producing process works at all. It's a mystery process.

If they aren't in the subs, then I suppose that we'd be getting "dubtitles".
They're in the subs. He was asking about the dub lines on the DVDs.

you… are... GOD!
Speak for yourself.
one of the things I do best here
And Lobster just makes it worse.
one of the things HE does best here

Yes that's very true, that IS a good point. I'll give you that… BUT as long as we don't hear "It's my dream to become King of the Pirates!" I won't get too pissed.
anyway Mato, thanks for telling us that. I do hope they get better within time but so far that's all they seem to be doing.
Can you mention things like the Mystery Line to anyone?
I'm getting giggly waiting for Skypiea. I really wanna see the scene of Luffy, Sanji, and Usopp in the boat traveling to the Ordeal of Balls…eer...Orbs...I wish they'd keep Balls due to the OoC is very humorous. XD
Out of curiosity, who was the writer for this particular episode?
As for the whole "improvement over time" issue, I think that is kind of unfair. That's like saying "these particular episodes don't matter as long as the later episodes are gonna be consistently better". Just because these particular episodes aren't properly written and acted out doesn't meant that FUNimation should think that the episodes themselves aren't as special to the overall One Piece storyline. Unfortunately, it appears to be just the case here. And it looks like FUNimation isn't gonna do anything about it because the episodes are "done and over with" and doing them again to regain consistency is a waste of time, money, and resources that are better spent dubbing other anime.

You've got a point.
Yeesh. I mention Luffy's mystery line being changed and there's two pages of complaining…
I really didn't expect them to realize it was a running joke, seeing as these are the first episodes they've worked on. I expect that the dub script writers will get more of a feel for the characters and running jokes the more they work on the series, so I don't think it'll be that big of a problem. Just felt like pointing out a few things I found odd.
Speaking of out of character, it may have been mentioned before, but Zoro saying "facade" sounded a bit too intelligent for him. The only person I could really see saying that is Robin.
Voice Opinions after 4 episodes
Zoro is sounding less like jigen now.
Sanji still sounds cool.
Luffy starting to sound like his 4Kids counterpart only quieter.(what? XD)
Robin not sure.havent heard her voice much to get a opinion
Nami-Ok voice.
Chopper..Very perfect
Ussop-Same.

Facade isn't that unusual of a word…And Zoro isn't an imbecile. We really don't know what kind of education he's had but I'd imagine he'd get something from his sensei who seemed like a fairly educated guy.
@Tommy:
You've got a point.
Are you saying that FUNi shouldn't have redubbed DBZ with the FUNi cast? Or that FUNI should not have redubbed the other eps because Vegeta's voice sucked? The most important thing is consistency.

Maybe.. it just sounded odd to me coming out of Zoro's mouth.
It's no less odd than English coming out of his mouth….
EXACTLY. CN really needs to bring back weekday Toonami.
yeah because CN of today is just…yawn. I barely watch it now. Back then in the 90s i would watch CN for 2 hours straight for toonami.
Sigh..CN needs to have a channel dedicated to new shows then put all the old shows on another channel..and Boomerang just doesnt help much
any edits expected for the 11/3 episode if anyone should know some by memory?

Not much off the top of my head except for Cricket's cigarette.
What kinds of edits do you think will be in the Bellamy vs. Saryuma Aliance episode? o.o
There are some pretty painful scenes in that… Like when Bellamy cracked Sojo's ribs, and Saquiss sliced open Marshira's back. Not to mention the gallons of blood, and Bellamy giving lots of face punches.
But I don't know if Funi will take away the rib cracking noise, because 4Kids didn't during the Sanji vs. Gin, and the Sanji vs. Bon Clay fights.

Oops, pardon my stupidity. I was thinking of a completely different episode.

Well, after Noland explains the dark clouds, Luffy calls it a mystery cloud. I'm not really sure what they're going to do about that. The only other thing I see being possibly edited is all the bee stings on Luffy and Chopper, but I have been surprised before coughcough ketchup coughcough

I'm sorry, I should've made that more clear.
He has a point in that we shouldn't be thinking that these earlier episodes don't matter in terms of acting and writing as long as future episodes are better and they should re-dub 144-however many episodes aired by now, or whatever he said.
It didn't have anything to do with DBZ.
I really should'a made that clear.

I can sorta see Big Chop in my head… Sarquiss goes "BIG CHOP!" and leaps at Marsira... then there's a flash and Marsira is on the ground =/
Maybe.. it just sounded odd to me coming out of Zoro's mouth.
Not really. The ONLY thing that would sound odd coming out of Zoro's mouth (aside from the childish jokes the 4Kids dub had him say, or clucking and barking like animals) would be pointing out directions that were CORRECT. :P
I just was in the 4Kids forums looking for a good laugh, and they actually have a One Piece thread. It's full of retards whining about how "bad" the new voices are. I was literally laughing my ass off.
Speaking of 4Kids, I noticed that Kirby, Shaman King, and Mew Mew were nowhere to be seen on their site, so lets hope they lost the rights to those shows.

I think with those shows they has finished airing so no point for to be on the Site,IMO.

I tried going to the site but I got tired of being assaulted by that yogo ad.

I just went there, yeah there was that stinking Yogo ad. I saw some of the comments. xD
Lol
That Yogo add was crazy. It wouldn't go away >.<
Anyway, even though they say the voices are "out of character", at least they aren't completely bashing the new dub.

Eh, they don't know any better. The fact that two companies are in seperate staes, and it's too late for the old VA's to redeem them selves (except for Marc).
Speaking of 4Kids, I noticed that Kirby, Shaman King, and Mew Mew were nowhere to be seen on their site, so lets hope they lost the rights to those shows.
Well, Kirby and Shaman King have ended, and they cancelled Mew Mew.
As to losing the rights… I honestly don't know.
I'm kinda hoping someone else picks up Shaman King, though. The Uncut English DVDs were really nice, but didn't last long at all. And yes, I already know why they didn't last.
Edit: Sorry to go off-topic.
If anybody has any complaints about the script just hound Eric Vale at the next con he is at, but do it respectfully, please.
I find myself hardly even watching TV anymore…
Anyways so what's people bitching about today?

See, now is exactly the right time to be making a big deal out of this stuff. If we can save even one "mystery" line, it's worth it.

It really isn't fair, but it's just one of those necessary evils. If you're thrown in the deep end you have to learn how to swim fast, not well. It would be nice if the scripts could get a bit of a rewrite for the DVD release. The TV version is completely inconsiquencial as far as I'm concerned. It's only purpose is to act as a preview for the eventual DVD releases.
Since as far as I know there's not even a release schedule yet, it's not out of the realm of possibility to fix some of the more obvious mistakes.
The only bright side of this is that at least they're getting this done during my least favorite of the four main storylines so far.
Facade isn't that unusual of a word…And Zoro isn't an imbecile. We really don't know what kind of education he's had but I'd imagine he'd get something from his sensei who seemed like a fairly educated guy.
Zoro is a blunt instrument. Very similar to Luffy in certain respects. He's the guy who, with a completely straight face, suggested that he and Usopp play janken to see who gets their hand cut off so they can fight freely.
Facade is not a word he uses.
Sham, fake, phony… all would have been more appropriate words.
Say they came across a body that had been choked to death.
Robin and Chopper would probably say he'd been asphyxiated.
Nami, Sanji, and Zoro would say he'd been strangled.
Luffy might say he drowned.
While all are pretty much saying the same thing, their various character traits determine exactly what words they use.
I ot 3 things to say.
1. The joke I had been waiting so long for was simply plain awfully handled.(Shut Up Chopper! What the hell are you doing?!)
2.I,ve been noticing a lot of stupid dialog changes like the Usopp and Luffy thing about GOING MERRY, Luffy said Going Merry!
3.Shojo's lack of pitter patter makes me very sad.
4. Fav qoute: It's a freakin palace!
5.I didnt even notice Cricket's cig missing!
6.A lot of things said still seems all outta character.
7. I think Shojo's VA should sound a little more snoody:that's what his face indicates to me anyway.
8.They shouldnt say Mombran so much: sounds wierd.
9.Great episode!!
10.STILL NO PREVIEW!!!
(^ not really seeing how that counts as three things to say…)
Eh, I really can't comment on the latest episode seeing as I still haven't even seen it. It kinda sucks about the mystery thing but I wasn't meaning to bitch about it, so apologies if it came off that way.
I'm positive that once the writers and actors become more settled into the story and more familiar with the characters, they'll understand the significance of the various speech patterns, and what kind of phrasing each character is more likely to use. Remember we probably know One Piece a lot more thoroughly than they do, so of course some things they consider to be translated accurately are going to seem out of place to us. However I firmly believe that as they learn more about One Piece these kinds of small errors will reduce in number and eventually vanish. :)
I also have a feeling Funi sees these topics and what we like and don't like and they'll improve over time.
^ I hope you're right Quexinos.
Though I am pretty happy with the dub right now, I would like to see a few improvements in the future.
I just saw this article http://movies.go.com/variety/feature?featureid=922712
I don't really like One Piece being labeled a "Kiddy toon" though. :/
Yes it's for kids, but that just sounds almost like an insult.
… "kiddy toon"? Is that actually a description? I've never heard anyone call something a "kiddy toon" before.
"Kiddy toon?" Ouch.
Even so, I have to say I'm enjoying the new dub. I almost fell out of my chair the first time I heard Sanji's new voice though; it sounds nothing like either of the voices I've heard him with before. But it's good, as are the other voices in the new dub. It's true the dub isn't the greatest, but I also believe that there will be improvements over time as the dub progresses. So far, it's a good dub. Just… good.
But I said it once, I'll say it again: I can't wait to see FUNimation take on Skypiea.
So I was rewatching the latest episode, and lo and behold, what do I stumble upon but this:
!
! What is that I see in Cricket's mouth? lolololol
! >! Now stop fucking whining about the edits.
I think I did notice that, but I didn't think much about it. I don't check for cigarettes really.
Actually it was a misinterpretation of of poor quality, and turned out to be nothing. I thought I noticed something, but I didn't.
Regarding the whole wondering about if lines will be re-recorded, I seem to recall several lines in Fullmetal Alchemist's DVDs being redubbed to either change lines that originally didn't work with a scene (such as Barry the Chopper missing his "AAGH! WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR BODY?!" line in the TV version, where as he regained the line on DVD to match his freaked out reaction) or simply just to use lines where the actor has gotten more into character (Envy's lines in early episodes didn't match the same quality as later ones on the TV broadcast, the DVDs had redubbed lines after his actress got more adjusted to her character).
Never know. Might happen with OP once they manage to slow their rush down and prepare work for the DVDs.
