Why do I get the feeling everyone's standards were lowered by 4kids?
This was not nearly the fantastic dub people make it out to be. Do you not see how similar and terrible Luffy was to 4kids? Masira was just…annoyingly harsh. Usopp and nami and chopper are just meh.
And please, Hikari E was disgraced with that singer. It was worse than I expected it to be.
Can we kinda stop acting like Funimation's cheerleading squad?

The dub was good. We're cheering because that's obviously the case. :getlost:

Heso!
I watched the dub tonight. I really loved it. I think that everything is going to be great now.
I really like the voices. I am looking forward to more lines for Sanji because Sanji does not get to do much in this one. I loved Robin's voice. I was so happy to hear her call everyone by their jobs. It was so great to have everyone get to have a wide range of emotion. So I am looking forward to hearing this cast get to mature into their parts. I can not wait to hear the other new voices next week.
It was such a joy to have the English script be so close to the original. It was also great to have the BGM. I also loved the new versions of the OP and ED. I would love to have full versions of these. I also liked to get to have the preview for the next episode.
So thanks so much Funimation for a really great start. I can not wait for the rest of the episodes and the DVDs.

It's not like the dub was bad. I enjoyed watching it, but this dub does not soar over other average dubs in any way.
And seriously, the opening was a dissapointment.
You think that guy sang well? -
Some guy started this, I'm just continuing it.
(standing ovation)

You think that guy sang well?It goes without saying – yeah. I mean, its pretty awesome for an opening to a cartoon.

@ RomanGod: Some people Are so Subbie Elitest that nothing will satisfy them.
It sill pisses me off when a Naruto Subbie gets in my Face Because I Don't call Sasuke "Sa-Soo-kay" instead of "Sas-kay". Same Basic principle here.and AWESOME!!! I mean Seriously AMAZING!!! I was Wowed, ESPECIALLY by Sonny's Usopp. Sanji was Awesome, but he talked too little to be sure, however I loved everyone else.
My only Gripe, I attribute to the Actor not being accustomed to her role, but Chopper Sounds a bit too Girly SOMETIMES, but not all the time, so after Brina's Been chopper for a little while, I have faith it will sound good.EDIT: so many people are posting to this thread so fast, that I didn't see Pkbasis' 2nd post when I posted this, My bad

Dude, I'm just criticizing the dub here.
I am so on those dvds. The quality of the dvds alone makes it worth it.
I am thankful for the increase in quality of the series in America, so don't get me wrong. -
All right, watched it again, and I'm happier about Roger's voice now.
It's so weird not really minding/noticing the disappearance of Sanji's death sticks. I'm glad it's not a lollipop though.

I apoligized and removed the part where I directly said you were a Subbie Elitest
If you notice, Roman God was looking upset at you too before you made your second one.
although the stuff I said about Subbie Elitest still stands, even if you aren't one -
Coincidentally, I was reading a book about wisdom and proverbs just now, and I came across the saying: It is impossible to please everybody with one thing.
Hmmmm…
On topic: Just saw Hikari E. dub on Youtube. Though it wasn't my favorite in the original, I have to say that it is indeed great and perfect.

@dirtmonkeyAL:

That's probably because part way through the editing process they realized that simply removing the cig was a LOT easier than editing it out completely then drawing a lolly in, which is essentially what 4kids did.
-
It's just annoying to hear people love it so much, and I think it's because there existed a version so bad this one is a godsend.
If this is the fans' reaction to this level of quality, then I fear anime dubbing will never improve. -
And if they do love it, so what? It's not like it's a bad dub. And it's certainly not a dub worse than what they've been dished out in the past. So, why would there be any major complaints?
Of course everyone isn't going to like everything about all of this, but even so, it's a lot better than 4Kids by leaps and fucking bounds. (Even though, personally, I think this dub captures One Piece how it should be.)
And at the very least, we don't get two separate continuities to deal with like in certain other 4Kids properties. So in a few years, I can hear people talk about Luffy going into Gear 2nd against Lucci at Enies Lobby and not Luffy going into 2nd Gear against Lucious at Enies Stronghold.
-
Heso!
I may be a very different anime fan. I normally watch dubs. I like to be able to lose myself in the visual of the story. For with One Piece when I watched one episode in the Japanese and I really loved it. I had heard some of the 4Kids dub and thought that it was just awful.
Now to the Funimation dub of One Piece I felt that it was faithful to the original Japanese. As a dub fan I thought that the VA work was great. I know the characters from their Japanese versions and I felt that this cast has a lot of promise and will be able to handle the future and the past storylines.
For me it will be fun to listen to them. Do I like them because the other was so bad? No I do not. I like them because I think that they fit their characters.
I am so glad that I have a new version of One Piece that I will be able to watch. I look forward to seeing more episodes and getting the DVDs. I have and still love the Japanese VA cast but now I feel that I have an English cast that I can now watch and like as well.

Very VERY restrained post
Okok I'll make this brief before I go all fanboy screaming and running around the room again….LOVE FOR FUNIPIECE!
And what's wrong with people liking it? Booyou if you don't like seeing happy people! Go be depressed somewhere else! THIS IS HAPPY ZONE!!
WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
…Sorry, I lost myself and refuse to delete that sudden line of fanboy outburst.

well, Pkbasis, if you think it sucks, then you think it sucks, but I'd rate it at FMA or Cowboy Bebop Level, that's My opinion on it, so don't go around stating your opinion like it's fact.
and this is Coming from Someone who has seen quality dubbing (Hellsing, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist) and knows FUNi can screw up dubs (DBZ) AND, I usually watch OP Raw (when I can find it that way, I also DL K-F's Version for my brother who needs the subs) so don't talk as though We're gushing over it because it's Better than 4kids, granted it's GREAT that it's better than 4kids, but I'm not biased because of it, I just really like the dub so far -
And please, Hikari E was disgraced with that singer. It was worse than I expected it to be.
Can we kinda stop acting like Funimation's cheerleading squad?Your last line is insulting and illogical. I genuinely liked the opening, not because I'm trying to suck up or be a cheerleader. People will give negative criticisms wherever they deem it necessary; your overall negative opinion isn't supposed to be forced upon everyone as if everyone is somehow secretly hating the dub. You want it to be improved? Not going to happen if everyone genuinely feels that a fantastic job as been done with the opening. Sucks for you? Yeah. Sorry.
-
yeah, it's not that big a deal that he hates the dub, what's upsetting is that he feels his opinion on it to be undeniable fact and is pretty much bashing us for liking it.
We're talking about something that is relative to everybody watching, and he's acting like we're all saying the world is Flat or something.
short answer pkbasis: If you Hated The Dub, Fine. But that does NOT mean it was poor quality, it just means that YOU felt it to be poor quality. Stop acting like it's a Crime against Anime to like this dub -
I love One Piece from the bottom of my heart, and I think the dub has potential, I have my complaints and what i liked. But Im going to keep in mind that usually when an anime starts it needs a few more episodes to find itself and a style that works.
Besides I enjoyed it alot, especially the ending that was my favorite part. ^_^

Re: The ED
I don't think the problem is that they shortened the song, it's that they put the first 1:10 of the full version to the animation for the TV version.
Could this mean we'll get a CD of openings and endings (or, dare I say it, image songs) at some point?
-
no, on the original Japanese version, it was the full version that just faded out at the end too.
I thought that was strange myself when I first saw it in Japanese -
Beautiful. This episode was absolutely, without a doubt beautiful.
Like many others, I was smiling throughout the entire episode. The voices are amazing, the music is unchanged, Cartoon Network even left in the next episode preview (which I had expected them not to.) Yesterday was a day that marks the beginning of the great age of Funpiece! May it never die!
I am so excited for next weeks episode, judging from the pure awesomeness of this weeks episode, next weeks will be a riot.
-
I think it can be safely said that we can only expect good things from now on. We went through the torture of 4kids dub and in the end we finally get some justice done to the series.
FUNi definitely gives us nice things.
I stopped watching the anime due to the manga somewhere around mid skypiea… around the Ohm fight I believe. So I'll be watching every week. Now I can actually watch and enjoy the dubbed version of One Piece and to me that is a good thing.
-
no, on the original Japanese version, it was the full version that just faded out at the end too.
No, he meant that the english version was edited in a different way from the original, making it seem completely off-sync. For starters, the instrumental part was twice as long here than it was in the original, and they faded it out a lot earlier in the song than they did in japanese.
Though I still say that we're lucky that the actual episodes were done so well, and that we're getting the endings at all. I mean, not even Naruto got to keep it's original ending-themes in the TV-broadcast! So yeah, FUNi's OP-dub, just after one episode, has instantly become my favourite anime-dub. (Funny, the show goes from the worst dub ever to the best dub ever in just 4 months…)
-
The dub is WIN! The look my little sister gave me this look that was like "WTF" and it was priceless. My two youngers brothers were like "This is One Piece?!?!?" but in a good way. All of us were so surprised at how intelligent it was with Robin and the skull. ^_^
-
Wow. So great. Usopp's voice is so damn good. It doesn't even sound like Krillin like I thought it would. Sanji's voice is also full of greatness. Zoro is the only one I'm not incredibly "OMG"ing about. Sometimes he sounds like an original voice, but others it sounds like Vegeta, especially when he was yelling.
And why was the title "CAUGHT LOG" if they still call it compass?
Robin's voice = the smex btw. I couldn't imagine a weird voice with a southern drawl talking the way the new VA is.
-
Well, I was afraid to post last night because the topic was so busy that my computer was slowing down, but I will now.
The dub is awesome. It's everything I wanted. The voices sound great, and they can actually act! To be honest, at first, I thought FUNi would try to make the voices sound a little more similar to the 4Kids voices to appease to dub fans, but it seems like apart from using dub names in the broadcast version, they're basically flipping 4Kids off!
The dialogue also sounded pretty much translated, and I thought they handled that "Saru" joke well. This dub is actually genuinely funny when it's supposed to be!
Oh, and the music. THANK GOD the original music is back! It was awesome hearing good English voices playing over the original BGM. Hikari E and Free Will in English sounded FANTASTIC! And the episode preview! For the first time ever, an arrangement of We Are played across American airwaves!
And most importantly, I want to see MORE. I was actually sad when the episode was over! You've done a great job, FUNimation, you've got my support.
-
It's…so...beautiful!!!
-
Awesome dub. I am caught up with the dub. Still gonna watch the sub though. Since the sub was already on my comp I made comparisons.
-
allmost 40 pages in one night allsome.
i enjoy the anime style too feels more mangish. -
Man, I'm loved last night. We got like 3 Commercial breaks which was awesome cause it seemed like for Bobobo that we had like 5, or at least 4. Now for my Thoughts:
AS SOON AS BOBOBO'S ENDING WENT OFF: Ahhhhhhhhh Ahhhhhhhhh ahhhhhhhhh;
It's the
Openning: Towards the Light: The Gold Roger part, is really awesome; the voice FEELS like what Gold Roger should be. The song itself. It's really awesome! But I have to get used to it being in English; and I'm used to the Japanese. Also some parts seems like they were trying to rush the lyrics to fit in it; but I loved it!Voice Actors:
Luffy: As soon as the Opening Title came up; he filled in the spot. Some people keep saying "Its the same as 4kids…" But it so much different, he sounds so much like a boy. It works for him.
Zoro: When he was yelling his voice fitted, but cause of his lack of lines, it'll probably take me longer to get used to it. But he'll do fine.
Nami: They did a pretty good voice job on one of the most talkative StrawHats. I really like this one.
Usopp: It's grown on me, I really really love it.
Sanji: Not the best, but does a really good job. He's above Zoro for sure; but isn't one of the top new ones. But I'm glad he fits and is definitely a improvement on "Romp Roast Wrecker!"
Chopper: I'm happy with this voice. I was hoping for a more gruff voice for Heavy Chopper, but at least he sounds more like a boy in that form. I bet some people are gonna complain for it not being either of the old voices, but Liza started to get lazy as the series drawn closer to its end.
Robin: One of the better ones, and the whole skull thing sold me with her.
Masira: His voice actor made me really like this character. Though the only thing I have to pick with this is how his name is pronounced. I don't really like it; feels too Japanese sounding.
Ending: I really liked that ending, and the English version is just as good.
Just when I thought it was over...
Preview: Strangely enough I got the most excited when I say this, and actually jumped up to stand. It really makes you pumped up to see the next episode. Nami and Usopp's conversation with the combined effects of Luffy naming off the next episode really makes it feel worth waiting the week for the next one.
It truely feels like a new show from both the 4kids and the Japanese.
-
Just downloaded the episode (I'm not one of you lucky americans T_T) and watched it. I thought it was pretty good but not as awesome as everyone is making it out to be. I agree with all the comments I read about Robin's voice being awesome - suits her perfectly. Zoro's voice is pretty plain but it fits the bill, thought the real test will be when he's in super serious fight mode. Sanji's voice is very good too, and is a huge step up from the 4Kids one. Chopper and Usopp were almost perfect, but to be honest their voices in the japanese One Piece is so perfect nothing could really compare. Luffy and Nami were probably the worst but they weren't bad and were far more tolerable than the old ones. Also Masira was pretty bad - sounded like they got the guy who did Arlong for 4Kids.
-
HOLY SHIT O_O (just saw the episode)
HOLY SHIT!!!! That was incredible. I'm sorry. I'm not gonna even comment on it for now. I need some time to digest it. Let me just say, I love you FUNi. I really love you!!!
-
i guess it took sanji 103 licks to get to the center of his lollipop.
-
HOLY SHIT O_O (just saw the episode)
Where did you see it, can someone post a link, please??
I'm from Switzerland so I coudn't see it.Edit:Just found it, nevermind ( I should really read the first page…)
-
I don't care if the dub SOARS in popularity, but I want it to at least be popular enough that it retains a solid spot on Toonami, the DVDs continue to be released, and maybe even a little bit of nice merchandise.
I don't think that will be a problem at all, I mean, the entire 4kids debacle was aired in its entirety, I don't think that theres gonna be any motivation to bump it off the schedule now.
'Sides we've always got DVDs.
-
i was really happy with robin, i was worried i wouldn't like the new voice, i've never heard the 4kids robin, and from what i can gather i don't want to. the japanese voice actor for robin is just so cool, i didn't think they'd be able to get someone with the same character, but they did!
ussop looks like he's really gonna shine, i can't wait to see him screaming about (spoiler alert…....) knock up stream, in fact that whole scene (whole episode) is going to be soooo cool!!!!!!!!
i'm still getting used to zoro, i think i prefer the 4kids zoro, but i do love Sabat's voice. I think we need to see zoro doing some hardcore fighting before judging his new voice. can't wait to see him do (spoiler alert.......) 108 pound canon!! will it still be called that though?
-
i guess it took sanji 103 licks to get to the center of his lollipop.
hahhahaha I guess you're right. That's very funny XD
Let's hope it stays that way as well -
was marisa's VA the guy that did pilof? sounded like it
-
I'm not saying that new dub Zoro is perfect, but it sounds nothing like Piccolo. At all. Sure, he gets gruffer at some points, but Piccolo is on a completely different level of gruff.
But yeah, I watched it twice and enjoyed it twice. Can't wait for the next episode.
-
was marisa's VA the guy that did pilof? sounded like it
I thought he sounded like Arlong from the 4Kids dub. He probably had the worst voice in this episode.
-
Never thought I would look forward to watching a One piece dub.
-
Nice. It only took 144 episodes. With entire scenes and episodes cut. But we have the dub we've been waiting for.
Hey, I want to see what 4Kids dub fans… their reaction. It'll be great.
Some fans actually miss the old voices, puns, crappy episode titles, etc. Meh, it's their loss for not noticing the great effort it took for Funimation to clean up the shitty mess 4Kids left behind for them. And in the end, it all payed off. I mean, just look at how much we enjoyed this over the joke that doesn't deserve to even be called a dub.
-
I actually liked the old Zoro, specially because he was actually a fan and tried.
David Moo could have been good if he would have worked harder, and it somehow fit him, but it did not match the original Sanji.
Robin was okay, but without the accent also.
The new voices are incredible though.
Sanji has his manly serious voice now.
Does chopper change voice when he transforms?
-
Does chopper change voice when he transforms?
No! Thank God for that! I definitely claim the big chopper voice on 4Kids as one of the worst they had…
-
No, even when he's in Heavy Point, Chopper still has the sqeaky voice. And Marc Diraison was the only 4Kids actor I liked from the old dub. But, it sounds like Sabat is puting in some great effort as Zoro, too.
-
What's everbody's impression of Sanji's new VA, some of my friend are a bit confused over their own opinion on it?
-
I don't know if this has been done, but here are links to the opening and ending themes.
=
Opening =Ending
They used the full version of Free Will for the english, two guitar solos. The original had one.
